If I had to guess we would be trading down....more picks. Not the other way around.

You mean the way the Bears great defense showed up and won the superbowl for chicago? Oh wait.....

Re: RUMOR: Skins looking to trade up for C.J.

I say if he can rush the passer while playing defensive end. And, if he can get like 20 sacks. Oh, he would also have to be oustanding at stopping the run. Doing this while giving us the second coming of Jerry Rice at wide receiver. I say sure, sounds good to me.

Re: RUMOR: Skins looking to trade up for C.J.

Football is a team sport, last I checked. One, superstud WR is not all this team needs.

We can't keep relying on free agency being our main source of players to fill out our roster. With cap space more and more abundant around the league, fewer and fewer players are making it to the free agent market; they're all getting signed before then.

We can't afford to give up picks in a trade-up scenario, even for a "can't miss" (I don't buy that term about anybody, but it's used by people anyway) WR.

We need multiple players to build a good young core. Our existing core is getting older and needs to be replenished.

cj is going to be an amazing player, but we dont need to give up even more picks to move up to get him. if hes there at 6 then maybe consider him, but do not give up even more picks to get him

2007 - Calvin Johnson

2003 - Charles Rogers / Andre Johnson

And for every Larry Fitz, Andre Johnson or Roy Williams there are plenty players like Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Bryant Johnson, Ashlie Lelie, David Terrell, Koren Robinson, Rod Gardner, Peter Warrick, David Boston, Michael Westbrook or Desmond Howard who are high 1st round picks that have been busts or have had disappointing careers.

If you could go back to 1996 and have the Jets # 1 overall pick.. would you choose Keyshawn Johnson? Or would you rather have Simeon Rice at 3 Ogden at 4 or a better WR Marvin Harrison at 19... How about Ray Lewis at 26. If you went back in time and told the Jets that Harrison was going to be a better WR then Keyshawn they would have called you a fool.

Back in 2005 it seemed like 75% of Skins fans out there wanted us o draft Mike Williams... (Too bad we weren't talking Shawne Merriman or Demarcus Ware). I hope this year we aren't seduced by the sexy WR at the top of the draft and trade up to pick CJ... Although if he somehow lasts to 6 we HAVE to take him![/quote]

Bunch of well thought out posts on this thread so far. This is why I come here.

But even if we were to add Calvin Johnson to the roster, his biggest asset would be blocking for portis on outside runs. After all, BOTH Cooley and Moss are more dangerous than Johnson with the ball in their hands. Moss is lightning quick and Cooley runs with a bunch of power and balance.

What do we know about CJ after the catch? Not very much, that's what.

I would much rather see the ball in the hands of Moss and Cooley, and being run by Portis and Betts than going downfield with a 28% of completion to Calvin Johnson.

Because damn if it's unsucccessful and we have to punt...we are never going to catch the other team in score with our defense.

Some good points. In terms of busts it seem WRs are much more suscptible than others. On top of that even good WRs almost always take time to settle in. Very few come in and even make more than an average impact.

Any VA Tech fans want to comment on Calvin Johnson's ability after the catch? I seem to remember him making some memorable plays against the good ol' Hokies when the met GA Tech last season . . . and that was with Reggie (are you kidding me?) Ball at QB. Still think DLine is the way to go, but man I really can't see why anyone is calling Johnson 'overhyped'. He put up great numbers in college, that is he has done it on the football field, and his workout numbers are out of this world (4.35 40, 43 in vert., 11' 7" broad jump) those numbers equal tremendous explosion . . . this is no Mike Williams folks lets be clear on that.

CJ is a sweet player, and any team that lands him is going to immediately improve. I would love the skins to draft him, but we cant in our current situation. The only thing Im hoping for is that another NFC East team doesnt make the move to land him themselves...

btw, that was a VERY smooth 4.35, not one of those deals where a guy over runs and ends up falling at the end because he was leaning so far forward.

the thing would be, if you've got moss, CJ, an cooley (with portis), who's the #2 cover? 6'4" CJ with size and speed? portis would have soo much more room to run, and CJ would give you great blocking and have a chance to be as good as he could be (since there would be enough other players to keep defenses from double teaming).

DL is obviously a bigger need, but CJ would make any of the 32 NFL teams better offensively, and he'd probably put up good numbers his first year.

That guy is a beast. Maybe this is just more postering, sorta like how we were in love with J. Russell. This guy will be long gone before #6 so don't expect him to be a Skin. Still want to see a draft day trade were we can get one or two first day picks.

Finally a reasonable man! portis would have a probowl year, because JC would have his choice of weapons......cooley, moss, johnson, randle el, and portis, hell, we can pick up some decent FA to fill the DL,

Of course, the other question (apart from need) is what exactly the Redskins could possibly give up to move up from #6 to #2 (which is a huge jump). Lets not forget (as I know no one has) that the Skins don't have any other first day picks. So we have what? The #6 pick, a first rounder next year, an aging Shawn Springs . . . maybe throw in an autographed Joe Gibbs football, one of the three Vince Lombardi trophies on display at the Park (who needs three, come on, thats just decadent and the Lions haven't won a championship since 1956), a Sonny Jurgensen throw-back jersey, plus Redskins One and maybe we've got a deal . . .

Re: RUMOR: Skins looking to trade up for C.J.

its looking more and more like if C.J. is still on the board at #2 the skins will make a trade with Detroit. Detroit doesn't need a WR (nor do the Skins) and a 1st rounder this year and a 1st rounder next year plus a couple of players. C.J. will be a star in this league for years to come. The guy is naturally talented. If the Skins do find a way to get him i willing to bet he would push Moss to No. 2 right away.

Re: RUMOR: Skins looking to trade up for C.J.

on the value chart the #2 pick is 2600 points, and #6 is 1600 points. by that chart, if we gave up a future first, we would be getting ripped off if we had the 14th or higher pick next year, 15th would be even, and 16th and lower would be a steal for us.

If Gibbs believes that we will be good this year, he may be thinking that giving up next years number one pick to move up would be worth it. I do agree with ThatGuy in that you can't cover both CJ and Moss. Our offense would really be set for a long time.

Did you see this guy play??????????????????? The last thing I would worry about is CJ after the catch. Trust me. Guy played w/ a terrible college QB and still was a beast. Cooley is a nice TE but he can't run like this guy. Not even close. Just his size, jumping ability and physicality alone will cause all kinds of problems in the red zone where we seem to stuggle.

I would LOVE to see Moss and CJ as our starting WR's w/ ARE as a 3rd wideout and Cooley at TE. Plus Portis and Betts as RB's?? We would have an unstopable offense. I hope like hell we get this guy cause he is the best player in the draft.

The last thing we need to do is start giving next years picks away? Haven't we learned anything?
Move DOWN get more draft picks.......get the defensive help we NEED!

Just because "another" reporter like Michael Smith says the SKINS are the BEST fit.....it must be so?

These are just reporters like the ones at PFT, etc., just an opinion.
I'd like to see us get a great potential WR, but I think our NEEDS are very different. I quess we'll know more next month......after about 5 thousand different reporters give us 5 thousand different reports of who we will be drafting.

Part of me is considering CJ as well. I mean we made some moves on D. I'd love to see if GW could get this ship turned around just with Fletcher-Baker, THEN we go DT or DE next year if we suck so much ass we have to pick early again.

But again, I'm also of the opinion that as long as we DON'T take RB or QB, I'm fine.

Re: RUMOR: Skins looking to trade up for C.J.

For arguements sake...
If CJ is still available at 4, the 4th pick is valued at 1800 and the 6th is 1600. We could probably come up with something that wouldn't break the bank to trade with Tampa. They really don't need another WR, but will feel forced to take the obvious best player on the board unless they have a reason not to. That could be a senario that the skins would explore if they really are not happy with the defensive players available that high and they can't trade down for more picks.

If he fell to us at #6, I can see the logic in refusing to pass up on him. But trading up? Guys, this is a team sport. One player does not a team make.

We need multiple talented players.

CJ seems like an unbelievable prospect. But what if we traded down and acquired a 2nd and a 3rd rounder? People are getting all excited about CJ, but seem to be forgetting that a 2nd or 3rd round pick can turn into a Guard who ends up to be the next Steve Hutchinson.

Hell, Clinton Portis was a 2nd rounder.

CJ isn't the only stud out there this year. We just have to be shrewd, do our homework, and unearth the gems.

Why not? do you think we have a realistic shot at the superbowl next season? I think we could wait until 08' when we have a near handful of draft picks, or we could just trade springs for a 2nd or 3rd and draft quinton moses, he is dropping big time and i wouldnt be suprised if he ends up in the 4th-5th round.

Why would we ever trade up??? It makes no sense. Just let Detroit take him so he won't affect anything, he will be stuck in Detroit. If they do, Quinn or Peterson will slip down to six and our pick will become very valuable to trade down. We can still get a great player, maybe L. Landry at 8 and a DE at 40. Or Amobi at 8 and Grubbs at 40.

wow, yeah, trading up = bad. CJ (chad johnson) was a 2nd round pick, and steve smith went in the 3rd. it' really hard to have too many weapons, but breaking the bank for anyone that's not a franchise QB or a dire need would be silly. there's no julius peppers to trade up for, but there is a LOT of DL talent between picks 6 and 15 we could use.
