What's going to be great is to see us play Chicago this season. It will be interesting to see if (a) he plays with fire and Lovie Smith can utilize him properly or (b) he gets burnt like toast by Campbell.

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

so just hope that leaves us with room for the draft picks. if not then no draft this yr and just trade all pick for future picks.. i know we were close to having that much in cap space. which espn link states in the first sentence of the 4th paragraph "To complete this complicated deal, the Bears had to rework his contract." so we have to see what the deal was but they did rework it. because by that statement the redskins wouldnt have went through with it until his contract was reworked to help out cap a little bit.
I highly doubt that we would have dumped him unless we got some cap relief through a restructure. I can't see us taking a $7M cap hit this season.
Schneed thinks that we have enough cap room to get all of our picks in even after eating Arch's full contract.

After looking at the numbers, I agree with him. It's going to be by the Skins of our teeth though.

No pun intended.
I think we have about 3 million free right now.

We can sign the No. 6 pick and 4 others with that.
Yeah, but teams usually keep about $1-$2M in reserve and we will likely sign a few more players right after the draft or June 1.

It seems, at least, like we have a plan to get out of this cap situation. It seems like every move made this offseason has been carefully calculated.

I would be shocked if we don't get Cooley locked up before he hits the market next year.

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

I saw at NFL.com - NFL News that it said a conditional 6th round pick, and on ESPN.com - NFL - Skins agree to trade S Archuleta to Bears for pick in 2007 so how is he gonna perform between now and draft day to determine if that pick gets better?

or am i wrong thinking that the pick could become a better pick for us?
Patten is getting cut,
Yeah, Patten and Wynn also from what I heard. That will bump that $3M in current space up to a figure perfect to sign our draft picks and maybe 1 more FA after June 1st. Anybody have any word on whether or not we're bringing in Ian Scott and/or Ed Mulitalo for a visit?

SantanaMan 03-20-2007 07:48 PM

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

I would guess if its conditional then if he plays well next year we get an additional pick in next years draft.

I'm also seeing all over extreme skins that we have resigned Omar Stoutmire to a 1 year deal. Has anyone seen this with a actual source?

Darrell_Green_28 03-20-2007 07:50 PM

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

so would that mean 2 picks then?? this yr a 6th round pick and possibly an extra pick next year if he performs well enough? and if so how well does he have to perform for us to get that extra pick. 500 tackles and 200 ints?

JWsleep 03-20-2007 07:50 PM

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

I doubt they make the trade without some cap help.

But why does Chicago make this deal? Wasn't it clear that we were going to release AA? Were they SO worried that someone else was going to snatch him up? I don't get that, and so I applaud the FO for getting anything here. (Of course, that just highlights what a terrible move this was in the first place...)

(Patten is a 2 million cap charge)

So we wouldn't be able to do too much more, but it would still be a good decision based on freeing up future cap room.

Sign Ken Hamlin to replace AA before the cowboys do.

They probably would have gotten him anyway, but would have had to bid for him.

I guess... it's just hard to imagine a bidding war on AA from a skins fan's perspective. ;)

Good question. Why did the Redskins trade for Brunell when the Jags were clearly going to cut him? Why did the Dolphins trade for Harrington? Why did the Jets trade for Ramsey? Why did the Bears trade for Arch? Obstensibly the reason is to get the player on the team and learning the plays long before training camp rolls around. But there must be more to it than just that.

Only problem with Hamlin is that he's a hard hitting run stopper kinda like Taylor, and not that great in coverage. I like him though. I think the Cowboys are hoping they can draft my boy Reggie Nelson from Florida...

Yeah that's true. It's at the end of the Arch story. Don't know what to make of that move really.

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

I'd like to know exactly how the contract parameters work out. Does his bonus not apply now and just the already bonus money or what? I guess we'll need clarifcation on how this deal was executed. Bravo for getting something here. I tend to agree with Tripp that'd it'd have been nice to keep him around use him better but I think his BS attitude and probable media leaking meant it couldn't work.

On that note I agree he probably had reason to be perturbed but he also acted entirely unprofessional from what it sounds like. I think the only thing I'll remember about him is that he seemed to be a big baby. Oh and he couldn't cover a bed with a sheet.

I guess just to sure up some depth behind PP while getting somebody with some knowledge of the system since the latter seems to be top priority. It's a damn shame they couldnt bring back Clark instead. But hell with all the homecomings I guess clark isnt out of the picture.
Yeah that's true. It's at the end of the Arch story. It was coaching, Steve Jackson is an awful coach and i cant believe he is still on this staff. Remember when the article came out and it said that all the safetys couldnt stand him. I miss coach Walker, why did we let him leave for UCLA, he turned there D around real quick. "sigh"

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

whoever thought we could get a 3rd for arch is out of their mind. we're lucky we got a 6th and possibly more for him.

if the bears didn't take him, we might have just kept him, but the bears aren't going to give a 3rd for what's in reality a 2year/vet-min deal on a SS that's played poorly.

It takes two to tango....so what incentive other than loyalty does Cooley have to sign before he becomes a FA? After the crazy contract offer Dockery got, I think Cooley will want to become a FA and see what his over inflated value will be in the FA market. If were in Cooley's shoes, you would do the same.

I am glad we got rid of Archuleta. I am surprised we got something in return.

Re: Archuleta traded to Bears for 6th round pick

at least now clearing all that cap room seems to make sense, not that we didn't see sometime like this coming. re-signing stoutmire was a good move for depth, and we still have wynn/patten that could clear a bit of space if needed.

now it's time to wait around till the draft and see what offers the skins get for the #6 pick or who's there if they just have to use it. there's no room left for a mulitalo, scott, etc... not that there ever seemed to be any real interest from the team in the first place.

Couldn't agree more. He'll be tough in the Bear's system and could have been better used here, which everyone in the league knows. A six round pick is nothing. We've been suckered again.

We got Doughty and Golston in the 6th round last year. I think they're both going to be more than solid for the Redskins in the years to come.
