Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Well as I've said here and here and probably other places my concern with the deal is a.) shouldn't we get more picks and b.) why did we trade up to get Rocky and then sign Fletch only to add another linebacker. Granted, we're talking Lance Briggs here but still
I don't have a problem with people opposing the trade. Like I said, I still lean against it. All I'm saying is, to Matty's question, I think a lot of people's reason for opposing the trade isn't "well what about Rocky" or "can we afford to pay Briggs, what does this mean for Coooley" or "is Briggs a system back" or anything like that, it's just "well, it's the Redskins so it must be a bad move."
Alright, I see what you're getting at. However, I after reading through the majority of the posts I think most people are pissed because of the reasons that you stated (Rocky, trading the 6th for more picks, money for the future, etc) and that this isn't one of those situations where people are bashing for the sake of bashing. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
This reminds me of Jeremiah Trotter back in the day.
I believe that as of this moment, Alan Branch is a more valuable player than Lance Briggs. However, we are willing to trade away alan branch and pay twice as much just cause Dan Snyder is bored. And don't give me this "Dan is successful all everything" crap. Six flags is falling off the map. This is typical BS, not happy at all about this offer as I'm sure you can tell. All the other moves have been good this offseason, but this one takes the cake (if it is true) |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
I don't think so. I've seen tons of posts in this thread and in the 200+ post one stating why this is a bad deal. There's tons of real reasons and tons of substantiation behind all of them.
In this case, this is no knee-jerk reaction. People are mainly bothered by the fact that we have glaring needs at D line, and this trade severely compromises our ability to satisfy that need.
Who said you could talk? Didn't The Ego ban you for 10 weeks? :) Seriously though, perhaps I should have replaced "a lot of people" with "there are people who" Bottom line, if the trade goes down as speculated (#6 for Briggs and #31)what's the next step for you as a fan, and the Redskins as a team |

I was explaining this deal to a coworker this morning and as I was telling him some of the details (he's not a Skins fan, that idiot) I realized that the linebacking corps is arguably the strongest part of our defense right now. Last year we all would have been mad if we had gone out and traded a bunch of draft picks to get Will Shields with our Oline being as strong as it was; I see this as the defensive equivalent. |

Bottom line, if the trade goes down as speculated (#6 for Briggs and #31)what's the next step for you as a fan, and the Redskins as a team
I'll probably be grumpy until training camp hits, and then I'll catch the fever, and I'll root for Briggs and Marcus to sandwich Eli and make him cry. Whatever the 'Skins do I'm along for the ride. And if they acquire Briggs, despite all my complaining, I'd never be so happy to see myself wrong on something. See, the offseason brain is logical, and thinks through the salary cap, and roots for solid scouting of college players to acquire cheap talent to build the team for the long term. The in-season brain is illogical, emotional, and just wants to see the team smash face. The two brains don't communicate well with one another. The offseason brain can be ready to jump off a bridge, but the in-season brain is always going to eat, sleep, and breathe the burgundy and gold. It's not unlike man's two "heads." Sometimes the brain tells you no no no, this makes no sense. But the "other" head always says "shut the eff up, Spock, we're going in." |

LOL! But seriously, after all the debating (which is good cause it's fun to go back and forth on the team's personnel needs) I'm leaning more towards your view that this trade rumor is bogus. You know how much of a stickler the 'Skins usually are for the whole points value of draft picks. They usually stick pretty tight to the chart to help them value trades. We're squandering quite a few points by getting Briggs. Our pick is worth 1600, their pick is worth 600 or so, so in the proposed deal Briggs would be worth 1000. That's the equivalent of a mid-first rounder. I mean to the 'Skins really value him that highly? I guess it's possible but I wouldn't. I'd be asking for a 3rd rounder in that deal. Plus then there's all the stuff that PFT threw out there, explaining why Briggs isn't the best fit. Plus then there's the possibility that Danny and Rosenhaus are conspiring, with Rosenhaus's motivation being to drive up interest in Briggs, and with Danny's motivation being to scare Denver into making the Bly deal that's on the table. Of course, I could be wrong, and all of this could be wishful thinking. But I can see this rumor fizzling. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Has anyone even determined whether that Briggs was a beneficiary of his scheme or surrounding. Maybe the fact that there were other Pro Bowlers on the Bears D was the reason he was playing at that Pro Bowl level?
Who knows, but it seems that the Skins FO has trouble assessing value to prospective free agents and Briggs situation doesn't seem to be any different. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Why? Because a defense has three linebackers on the field roughly half of the time.
In the nickel and dime defenses, linebackers are replaced by defensive backs. Teams use the nickel whenever the opponent brings in a third receiver. Typically, that happens in second and long or third and more than three or four yards.
This one has me scratching my head -- in a nickel formation, doesn't the middle linebacker typically head for the sideline, leaving in the two presumably speedier outside linebackers? In this situation, I could see Briggs and Washington in on these types of plays. |

I think for most teams. Actually I think most teams just keep their two best cover LBs in regardless of inside or outside. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Ohh, I see, we should get him to be our nickel LB! ;)
|
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
I think Snyder and Rosenhaus are having a good laugh over this whole deal. Neither of them are favorites of the media and vice versa so I'm sure they are getting a big kick over floating this rumor out there.

Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
I guess all I care about is not how these shenanigans started but how they end.

Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Think about it, how many rumors have we heard involving the Skins lately??
The Skins trading up to grab Russell, trading up to grab CJ, the whole Bly thing, etc. This Briggs thing is just the flavor of this week. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Man...if this thing goes through everyone involved on the Redskins side of the deal should be dragged into the street and shot unless we get at least a second rounder out of the deal...
|

..... Plus then there's the possibility that Danny and Rosenhaus are conspiring, with Rosenhaus's motivation being to drive up interest in Briggs, and with Danny's motivation being to scare Denver into making the Bly deal that's on the table......
Also, at least twice in the last week and a half Rosenhaus and/or Briggs have been spouting off on Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio. This has to be a coordinated smokescreen because it makes absolutely no sense for the Skins FO to pull the trigger on this. On Draft Day the value of the pick will be in the Saints/Ricky for Champ plus the rest of the Bears draft area if Adrain Peterson, Quinn or Joe Thomas fall to #6. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
sorry bout that comment guys, it was retarded. i just really hope this doesnt happen
|
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
If this deal goes through I would rank it as the dumbest thing this organization has ever done, and that says a lot. I just don't understand why we need Briggs with Marshall, and McIntosh, then we get screwed out of a premier D-Lineman because Okoye, Branch, Carriker, Adams, Anderson, will all be gone by the 31st pick.
|
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
I'll believe the Briggs deal when the ink has dried on the contract.
Fellow fanatics ... calm down. This is fun ...right??? We are name calling before the draft starts. It doesn't look like the most logical move the Redskins could make, but when is the bounce of a football ever logical in Redskins' land. We could make a soap opera with this script. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Most folks on this site agree that we need have multiple needs on this team--which can be obtained via trading for current players or getting more picks (or a combination).
The best thing the Skins can do right now is create a demand for their #6 pick. By creating a buzz that they are willing to trade down, they hopefully will create a supply of offers on draft day that will yield the best outcome for themselves. Two players in particular, if they are available at #6, will entice teams to do business with the Skins--either Quinn or Petersen. The Skins should continue to create a climate of demand for this pick while hoping that one of these two guys slips to #6. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Everybody here has great points and just like I am are against the deal.
All over NFL on Sirius on all the shows and every host said the Skins are getting the better end of this one. I don't know if we are all bias toward the FO and hate them. OR are we the only logical ones. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Briggs agent Drew R. is on ESPN saying it is up to the Bears to accept the deal. That the Redskins have made the offer.
Then Mort said immediately after saying the Bears have rejected it and they not happy about the way it happened. That they never gave permission for Redskins to arrange a deal. |

If we had the #6, had a hole at OLB, and hadent just used two 2nd round picks on another OLB, and had a full draft of picks....then my tune totally changes and I think we win in a steal. But we are looking at the entire picture...most other people see Briggs/31 for 6th....which looks good in that sense. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
I heard this interview on NFL radio too. It was Jay Glazer though, not Vic C.

Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
why get briggs just draft Willis in the draft if thats what they want
|
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Uh, because Briggs is a proven commodity whereas no one knows anything about Willis.
Edit: Not advocating the trade, just saying why we'd go for Briggs. |

At the end of the day we'd have our 1st rnd pick as would they. But we'd also have their pro bowl LB. I think the reaction here is totally a sign of how Skins fans are no longer wowed by these big moves & thought that the Danny et al had decided to make a change for the better this offseason. The reaction has been irrational in my opinion, but is understandable given our recent history. My only objection to the trade is its impact on team chemisty & as I think Sherrif pointed out - the opportunity cost of the trade. |
Re: How the Lance Briggs deal started.
Hopefully this will fizzle out just as quick as this thing flared up. Danny Boy if this was your great idea, chill at the castle, let the people that know football make these decisions.
I had no idea we where even in the market for a LB? Not to mention one that is disgruntled, I'm not playing in Chicago, yada, yada, yada........not taking anything away from his talent, his pro bowls speak for themselves. However, we HAVE got to stop throwing draft picks away, like trash. Let's TRADE DOWN and get more, not less. Also, fill our PRIMARY NEEDS first. At some point along the road you have to learn from your mistakes? |

If you compare this proposed deal to the Champ/Portis deal, this one is multitudes better. The mere fact that we're not giving up any additional picks says a lot about the team learning from its mistakes. A couple of years ago, we would've given up the #6 for Briggs & maybe thrown in a pick or 2 in later rounds. Now if you mean the team should stop making big, splashy deals to get players & just focus on making draft picks, point taken. However, even if criticize the team for this deal, the fact is we valued the #6 pick enough to use it as leverage to get an additional player, who happens to be a top LB in his prime. Again, I don't understand why people here think we'd be getting the wrong end of this, but I do understand that fans are tired of the big deals that don't help us win. |
