Re: trade with pats
I Googled "Asante Samuel trade Redskins," and the only thing I found that wasn't from a fan site/message board was this tiny write up in the Wash Times. And all it says is we might call the Pats to inquire about Samuel.

Re: trade with pats
IF the rumor is true about a possible trade scenario, i would love to see it happen. We get an extra pick while upgrading significantly at corner. U can't say that Samuel is a product of the system guy or that we wouldn't fit in GW's system. GW's blitz system could really benefit from a guy who can single cover and jam so that the safeties can blitz and thats what Samuel brings. In fact, his interceptions almost always came off of single coverage or the Cover 2 when he jammed the receiver. This to me says that he isn't getting "cheap" interceptions b/c of a QB misreading a coverage or sitting back with a lotta help in a zone and picking off easy passes. The guy will be a top 5 #1 CB no matter where he goes PERIOD
Moreover, unlike briggs, samuel is a CB and that position tends to have players that are products of their ability rather than being products of their system like LB's and D-linemen. The only knock on the alleged samuel trade is that it may not work financially b/c of his franchise tag...but if the numbers work out (with trading away springs) then I am ALL for it. |

Any discussion would have to start with Shawn Springs, the sixth overall pick and likely a mid-round pick. And then the Redskins could give Samuel a giant contract that would further complicate the Redskins' salary cap issues.
|
Re: trade with pats
I think it'd be best for the Skins to either trade the 6 for a package including a pick somewhere between 10-15, or to keep it and get a stud. They need help, and the draft is the way to do it.

Not exactly the type of article I would point people to if I were rvd420 and trying to lend credibility to this. |

Re: trade with pats
At this point, I doubt the Skins will trade at all. But we'll see.
If it was up to me, we would stay pat at #6 and draft Okoye. |
Re: trade with pats
Saw shawn Springs on the news this evening. said he would like to stay in Washington, but he has got to do what is best for his family. Sound familiar? Nothing is official yet, but its kinda like the calm before the storm.

My guess our CBs next season will be Rogers, Smoot, Macklin, and Jimoh. I don't view any of those CBs as more than decent #2s. Unfortunately, I simply don't see us holding on to Springs, even though I'd prefer to keep him unless we got a 3rd rounder (which isn't going to happen). |

I think that we should keep Springs at least one more season. As far as the rest, Smoot was pretty solid the last time he was in Washington, Rodgers breaks up alot of passes, he should hold on to more of them. I think that he will be solid given another season. Macklin should provide a pretty good safety net in the event of injury. Jimoh needs to stay on special teams or the practice squad. I can realistically see us drafting a CB next year. |

any reason you think he'll be cut or traded? as I understood it from reading here on the wp, the cap hit is the same if we keep him or not. That's why I'd expect him to be here. |
Re: trade with pats
hes old and starting to get hurt to much.samuel would be a damn good upgrade.imagine samuel, smooter, and rogers at corner, with macklin for depth.jimoh sucks.i also think the reason theres not much on the samuel rumor is cause its 2 weeks from draft day.

Re: trade with pats
I hope we think again and again. I don't want another overpaid player...

Re: trade with pats
Sounds good to me. We need to have three solid DBs. Right now we have 2, and Springs aint one of them! Trade away if it were to go down like that, but I would pass on the deal if they want more from us. HAIL

When healthy Springs is a shut down corner. One of the best in the league. INT's are nice but not everything. A healthy Springs doesn't get the ball thrown in his direction at all. And as far as i am concerned we have 4 quality corners that have starting experience. Nuff said. |
Re: trade with pats
springs is no longer a shut down corner and they do throw his direction.hes getting old and slower too.we only have 2 quality corners.macklin is depth, and ade jimoh blows.i dont see why we even resigned him.

We resigned Jimoh for depth at CB as well as his special teams contributions. He's one of our best special teamers. |

Jimoh is a solid re-sign, where have you been. He is great on teams and provides depth at corner. Well deserved. |
Re: trade with pats
Sean Springs is terrible and lost a FEW steps. Carlos Rogers still has NOT shown me that he is even in the same league with guys like Champ and Mr.Green! Macklin WHO? Thank god for the ruturn of Smoot!!! We need a shut down corner like Asante Samuels. Let Smoot and Samuels teach Rogers how to shut down the passing game!
P.S. Send Springs down the road before he is worth nothing.
Before you send Smoot to the HOF just remember he got benched in Minn. and they were the worst pass defense in the NFL. |

I think we can get by w/ Springs but he is not shut down corner. Problem last year is he gets hurt and can't run or train. So then he comes back and is not as effective. But it looks like he is not going to take a pay cut so he's outta here come June. |
Re: trade with pats
Springs is our best corner. He's a very physical cb who was dinged up last year. 2 years ago when we made the playoffs he was playing at a pro bowl level. If he can stay healty he's one of our best defenders.
Not interested in Samuel. Want picks for the 6th pick or Okoye/Landry. |
Re: trade with pats
Springs was our best corner. He really lost alot after all the injuries last year. He had something like 3 surgeries. We should move on as a team and definately don't need to pay him 7.5 mil this year. That is what is really absurde about the whole Springs situation, he won't take a pay cutt. Why does he think he deserve to eat up 8% of our for this year? He's not as good as he was when we signed him to his deal and if wants to help our team win give up some of that money. Stick around for another year and do it.
Just my opinion though. Oh and by the way I would rather have the Pats 2 first rounders than Asante Samuel. |
Re: trade with pats
we shouldn't risk giving up shawn springs in a trade because carlos rogers tends to get hurt and we will have much more depth by keeping springs, not to mention, springs has been one our best defensive players, and rogers is to unexperienced to be depended on.
|
Re: trade with pats
This trade possibility intrigues me, rogers and smoot are no better than 2 corners, macklin was a 3 or 4 in a bad d, and im basically assuming that springs will be hurt the entire season, and because of spring's brittle body, i think that we should get rid of him, and we might as well get something for him. Good defenses need good corners, so I think that Asante would be a good pickup (assuming we pay him for his value, not how much we normally overpay), and id take Asante and a 24 pick over the 6 pick, the 6 pick is unproven and gets a crapload of money while Asante is proven and the 24 pick doesnt get that much money.

You should watch what you are saying. Speaking about Ade that way won't win you many points around here. |
Re: trade with pats
Sounds like it's bvd420 vs. the world! ;-)
Springs usually plays in 12-15 games/year. Last year some idiot doctor couldn't figure out that his groin needed "fixing" until just before the season. So he needs to recover during the season and has to go in before he's gotten his body back up to full strength. Strangely, he got injured and missed more time. As we all know, the defense as a whole played terribly, but had a couple of very good games. And miraculously, they occurred when Springs, that terrible CB, was playing. In my view the scenario is as follows: Springs out: terrible defense Springs in (and the other players in sync with him): respectable defense. By my estimation, Springs is the player they can least afford to lose. Let's see what happens this year. |
