Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
This is a Bull Shit move if true. Marshall is a proven NFL LB. They do not grow on trees. I do not care if he is only good at WLB and not at SLB where we now have a need. There are several worthless back up LB on our roster that will never make it in the NFL. Dallas Sartz? Cut them before you cut a real player that will contribute and can back up all three positions.
The ironic part is I finally watched the Steelers game last night and Lemar played well. If true this is a bad move. Depth will be hurt by this move. A coaches ego might be playing into this if it is true. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
It wouldn't be so crazy if Godfrey wasn't 3 1/2 years OLDER than Marshall, but this tells me that there wasn't a spot for Lemar, not only from McIntosh taking his spot (he earned it) but maybe another young LB will take some of his work too. We wouldn't have cut him and signed Godfrey if he was going to have a significant role.

MAYBE that's why he needed to be cut, or have his pay cut. He's a proven LB that lost his job to a more talented and bigger young LB. He'd be making more than he'd really be earning as a backup, so maybe they didn't want to pay a backup player a starter's contract. Football IS a business. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Just heard it on Sports Talk 980 in DC. Not sure what the FO is doing cutting a guy who has experience and can play back-up roles at MLB and WLB. Just when I thought they knew what they were doing.
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
We couldn't have traded him to someone for a 6th or 7th rounder? I think he'd be worth at least that to a team in need of some veteran experience.

There's our confirmation. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I don't think we should assume egos got in the way. I think Marshall has/had a great relationship with our coaching staff.
It probably just came down to a numbers game and an injury that hasn't fully rehabilitated. It's entirely possible that Marshall could clear waivers and rejoin the team at a later date. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Maybe they decided for the money he was costing them Marshall wasn't significantly better than cheaper guys like Blades and Sartz (who also play teams, though I imagine Marshall did too right?)
Why not cut Marshall now, give him a chance elsewhere, give your own guys more playing time. And save some money to spend on Cooley and Taylor? I know, I'm grasping for a reason here. I mean I don't think signing Godfrey is a bad move at all but cutting Marshall is pretty confusing, to say the least. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I bet Marshall winds up in Chicago (replacing Hunter Hillenmeyer) and thrives.
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
For those of you that are saying it is a money thing, there are 5 non- starters that count more against the cap than Marshall's $1.1M
1) Mark Brunnell $3.5M cap hit this year 2) Brandon Lloyd $2.4M " " 3) Fred Smoot $2.1M" 4) Todd Collins $1.4M 5) Ladell Betts $1.3M We have $4M in cap space tied up in our two back up QB's and we can not afford $1.1M for a starting caliber LB and valuable back up. THIS IS A STUPID MOVE. There is something behind the scenes we do not yet know about. Coach Williams and Marshall must be fighting. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Godfrey is not really the focus. I think H.B. Blades has impressed the coaching staff enough and Lemar Marshall sealed his fate on the blown coverage against the Steelers. Can't recall if it was Holmes or Wilson who caught the ball, but Marshall was not in position to defend the pass. I hate to see him go, but the younger LBs have more upside than some of our veteran LB's.
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Wow this is pretty shocking.

One blown coverage and you are cut? Double standard much.?.? What about the solo tackle for a 4 yard loss by Marshall at the beggining of the 3rd quater? So what you are saying is Anthony Trucks and Dallas Sartz have shown more, are better and have more upside than Lemar Marshall? No. Why do we discard a useful player and keep guys like Reed Doughty who done and shown nothing? I call BS! Marshall said or did something to piss off Williams. Lemar Marshall will be picked up and be playing well for another team this year. |

Huh??? How is Marshall going to beat out Hilenmeyer? Unless he got hurt or something. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The success of this season did not hinge on Marshall. I'm sure Godfrey and/or the other backups can do just fine in that role. The move is a surprise, but it's not a move that will impact the overall success of the season.
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I knew that he had played for G. Williams before. Maybe that is another reason why Gregg would feel safer with him at that position. I don't think it's that bad of a move considering that he knows both players better and his system better than the fans do.
I'm for it if it enhances his defensive system. No hard feelings toward Marshall, but if his own coach doesn't feel like he will hack it than I support the transaction. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I too was shocked at first...then I started to think about all the plays made by our young LB's this preseason. I think Godfrey is going to be the current band- aid that will eventually, in the near future, allow our draft picks like Blades and Starz to work into the lineup.
The skins are always getting bashed about wasting draft picks as they have...but maybe they finally did the thing right and this is just the next step in changing the whole ship around. Marshall was a stand up guy! But let us get real he is a back-up. When he played he is one sided. Not good against the run! As a starter the defense as a whole was not good! He will catch on somewhere and I wish him well...as long as he does not end up in the NFC East! |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The eagles also released Trotter today. Wouldn't surprise me to see Marshall in an Eagles uniform...
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
IF they are creating cap room, hopefully it is for Cooley.
I really hope/think that this is a thumbs up for our younger LB's |

Only by cutting Lemar Marshall and Todd Collins would the Redskins not take a cap hit. According to your list of players the Redskins were to cut here are the real cap hits Brandon Lloyd it would be a $7 million cap hit. If they cut Fred Smoot it would be a $5 million cap hit. If they cut Ladell Betts it would be a $1.4 million cap hit and if the Redskins released Mark Brunell it would cost them $1 million. You have to account for the release fees that is why your numbers are wrong. Where as if they cut Todd Collins it would save the team $1.25 million and by cutting Lemar Marshall it is saving them about $1 million. So that narrows down your list to Todd Collins and Lemar Marshall. And being that the Redskins just drafted two LB's makes Marshall the sensible cost cutter... |

Either there or uhh..umm..the Giants. I wouldn't be suprised to see him end up in NY. They're thin at LB anyway. This division loves to play musical chairs with its linebackers. |

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
It's moves like this which are why we are in the position we've been in latley...I dont get this in the slightest....without this guy, we wouldnt have made the playoffs in 2005...he made some HUGE plays for us that year while STILL playing out of position......JLC's blog said that he had not requested a trade and was "totally suprised by it", and while the success of our season didnt depend on it...if any of our LB's go down (and hey look at that MW is already hurt)...this guy can jump in at any role.....

I agree, I just think most people are shocked by it. Why release a decent vet for someone who is unproven in GW's system? He must have rubbed someone the wrong way, or the coaching staff sees something in our rookies. |

I think this guy played for GW in Tennessee, if I'm not mistaken. But I just can't see Marshall rubbing someone the wrong way. He seems like a stand up guy. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
This reminds me of the Ryan Clark situation. A decent, young and inexpensive Ryan Clark for an old Archuleta. Bad move.
An out of work and old Randall Godfrey is the next brilliant move by our front office? Come on. If our drafted rookies have so much upside, why is Dallas Sartz not ready to play? We have to cut a great backup (Marshall) so Sartz can ride the pine, not contribute this year and hope he will develop? We will live to regret releasing Lemar, just like we did regret cutting Ryan Clark. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I think we are overanalyzing this. The simplest answer to why he got cut is that he was outplayed in camp.
This offseason, we've made a significant effort to find LBs who are good vs. the pass. Fletcher, we made a run at Briggs, drafting Sartz and Blades, two very underrated cover LBs, who dropped due to size. For two straight years now, Marshall has been awful against the pass. While his prowess against the run could have justified the 4th LB spot, its possible he didn't "fit" our new defense. |
This reminds me of the Ryan Clark situation.
Randall Godfrey? Come on.
Godfrey is another guy coming off a good year against the pass. He is two years older than Marshall, but they could certainly do worse. Not sure if this is an upgrade, but since Lemar wasn't going to be around next year, it makes some sense. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The only explanation that makes sense is that Marshall was grumbling about the prospect of being a backup. Ife he was okay with that role and was willing to be a team guy, then I believe this is a mistake.

He was probaboly our biggest defensive playmaker in 2005, however. I mean the entire defense did a great job and he was in good position alot of times...but if you go back to 2005, he made some HUGE plays for us.... |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
The timing of it is curious.. Why cut him now rather than after the next game unless it was just so obvious he was not going to make the team?
|
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Marshall was released in part to help clear cap room for a contract extension to Chris Cooley.
It seems like we'd hear something about a Cooley contract extension if talks were getting close. So there's no reason to believe an extension is imminent. Nonetheless, Marshall's release does clear $1 million in cap space, and assuming Godfrey is making the vet minimum, this move would represent a net increase in our cap space. I don't want to read much into it at this point, other than to say it's unlike the Skins to leave cap room on the table. |

My friends who follow the Bears have told me that the Bears have been talking about replacing him. Last season he registered a whopping 36 tackles and no INTs. He's never had more than 55 tackles in ANY season in his career. |

I agree that he played well in 2005. My favorite "Marshall Moment" was in the penultimate game of 2005 against the G-men when Lemar intercepted a pass intended for Shockey, who in typical Shockey fashion, turned and bitched at the refs while Marshall was taking the ball back 20 yards the other way. I had a bunch of Giants fans wearing #80 jerseys sitting near me that day, and I got right in their faces pointing out how their boy quit on what was one of the biggest plays of the game. Priceless. |

MLB). |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
ESPN is now reporting the story. Clearly Lamar lost his staying power when he was demoted in favour of London Fletcher. I wouldn't be surprised if he was disgruntled and asked to be released. I mean, I would. I don't think personal pride would allow you to be demoted.
In last weeks game Marshall didn't play with any enthusiasm. He was winging it. |
Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
C'mon you guys, Marshall wasn't bitching about riding the pine or being a back-up. He's been a team guy from day one, and I highly doubt he was released because he was bitching and moaning. Could be wrong, but it's just not consistent with how they've portrayed him in the past.
We all know in GWs system people are in different packages all the time, and with Marcus now playing DE in certain situations Marshall would have almost been guaranteed significant playing time. GWs defense didn't get more complex. In fact, he's scaled it back some and simplified some things, so it had nothing if anything to do with the system. It had to be one or two things: Either that damn shoulder injury is still bothering him to the point it's affecting his performance or they are just going in another direction with the young guys. |

I thought the play against the Eagles when he tipped the interception to himself was one of the great defensive plays in Redskins history. That game was not going our way at the time. (This was the game where ST returned the fumble and Mrs. Portis threw down and repesented.) |
