It's hard to argue against Cooley. Since he came into the league, only Antonio Gates has caught more TDs from the TE position. That's pretty impressive.

IMO it's Taylor and Cooley as 1A and 1B, and it's a pick 'em for which one is A or B.

Taylor is a game changing force, but think of where we'd be without Cooley's red zone hands.

They'll probably trade down, trade down again, end up with a late round first, 4 2nd round picks and some poor team's 1st again next year. Later that afternoon, Belichick will trade some kid some "magic beans" for his lunch.

Chris Cooley would be mine Taylor was a no brainer pick for me he is a special kid you could see that in him in college. Cooley was pretty much a no name pick that has blossom into a pro bowl cailber player.

Cooley
Taylor
Landry (even though he's only played 9 games)
Golston/Montgomery
Macintosh

Overwhelmingly, the picks that have worked out have been on defense, with the offensive picks (O-linemen, backs) being largely useless. Not sure whom to credit and whom to blame for that.

If he continues to perform like he has I would agree with you, especially when you consider that the entire world howled like a stuck pig when Gibbs made this pick instead of trading down. It was a gutsy call and so far it seems to be paying off.

1) Cooley
2) Campbell

Hard to blame anything for that except the lack of picks.

You might dispute a couple of those, but even if you take just the certifiables (Smith, Benson, Williamson, M. Williams) - that's a 40% failure rate in the TOP TEN. Number 1 picks are no gimmes - and while I agree that depth is built by finding serviceable players in later rounds, successful teams find successful number 1's.

In one of my preseason mags they broke down the league wide "success" rate of picks made after round 1 and it was pretty low. We are talking players still playing for the team that drafted them more than 3 years after the draft. It was less than 20%.[/quote]

pacman jones is no way a bust. he may have serious character issues, but the guy can play. so as long as when he comes back he stays out of trouble he will be a pro bowler easy

BleedBurgundy - this is exactly what I thought. I know that trading down is one of the hardest things to do because most teams don't want to pay the huge signing bonuses that a high draft pick requires. The great teams keep accumulating more picks and yes some of them will turn out to be busts, but just by sheer volume some of them will pan out at a low contract. So the Patriots will continue to stay under the cap and have room to sign the important free agent or two to fill out their roster and more importantly they will also have a lot more depth when the injuries inevitably come during the season.

What I think this thread really represents is that you can really build a team of core players (or "core Redskins" as coach Joe would say) and have a better chance at sustaining long term success through the draft if you got good scouting and more importantly if you keep your draft picks. Lets hope that the build through free agency first and let the draft be secondary philosphy is done at Redskin Park. Most Redskin fans don't care about signing big name players for the sake of "winning the free agent offseason acquisition award" - we want long term success on the field. We have not tried the philosphy of depending on building through the draft heavily - why not give it a shot and see what happens - at least you'll stop throwing away $10 million on busts like Brandon LLyod.
