Skip Bayless better not hope I ever see him on fire in the street, cuz I won't even PISS in his punk-ass direction. I don't mean to clog up the already burdened works, but what the?!?! The body isn't even cold and all these people want to talk about is all the negatives in a young man's life, not the positives. Makes me sick

Re: What is wrong with ESPN??
SS we've bantered about our media experience so I somewhat understand what you're feeling. ESPN is big dog and the big dog gets blamed for everyone elses bites sometimes.

One of the reasons I got out of the field is because of coverage like this. While a small part of his life, his past legal and on field troubles have (presumably) nothing to do with this tragedy and really shouldn't be mentioned in any stories related to this. If it were Pac Man Jones that this happened to, it would make more sense and a correlation could be made more readily but as it stands it's just another example of the media going to the negative in order to spice up a story.

I know it's probably not the right time for this but, I can't help to think there is a sterotypical undertone to some of the comments from the media, 'This is the circle he surrounded himself with. He hung in violent crowds so why should we be surprised this happened. He had gun incidents in the past so this can't be so unexpected.' One incident automatically lumps him in with the image of a 'thug' that the media perpetrates consistently. Sean wasn't Tank Johnson, he wasn't Pac Man Jones, he wasn't Chirs Henry..

This was a man who had one incident, had removed those people from his life, had moved on as a man and a father who died protecting his family. Let's see if ESPN, NFL-N or anyone else has the courage to honor him for being home, asleep at 1:30am, with his girlfriend and child in the room, not at a nightclub or a strip bar and he did what any real man would do if he had to, he died protecting his family.

I hope the Redskins PR staff is taking note of those (Bayless, Wilbon, etc) who have run to the negative so immediately and bar them from Redskin Park forever.
I just dont see how one can say that ST's off field troubles can not be mentioned when talking about his life. Those things were part of his life. So were the gun incidents, the violent crowds and his recent turn around. For better or worse it was all his life.

I dont think any of us really know what ST was because he wouldnt tell us.

I believe Scott Van Pelt is on with Tirico today...I caught part of it on my way back from lunch.

One has to remember that while this is tragic, it is more localized event than a national one. While it would be nice for complete 24 hour coverage, it's not a necessity.

For those not local and are interested in keeping up, I highly recommend going to Triple X ESPN Radio and SportsTalk 980, as they are the 2 DC Area sports radio stations, and both offer live streams of their programming. I'd imagine both stations are doing something for Sean Taylor...

Re: What is wrong with ESPN??
My feeling is that all of the negative stuff in his past is completely irrelevant to this. He wasn't shot in a night club or at some crack house. He was at home asleep with his fiancee and baby girl. Then some piece of crap cuts his phone lines breaks in and shoots him dead. Whether he had past legal trouble or not has no bearing here and the fact that he had become a better man, a man to look up to means he deserves to be remembered that way and ESPN seems to be doing a pretty shitty job of remembering him the way he should be remembered.
Unfortunately I think we will soon find out that some of the negative stuff in his past is directly related to this incident. IMO, this has all the earmarks of a revenge hit.

He had become a better man but I'm sure those that did this to him didnt care.

If this happened to Favre, would there be such a focus (or at all) about his past drug addiction or his hard partying ways when he was a younger man? I'd be shocked if it was made mention at all. Certain aspects of the media make their name and revel in negativity and exploit it when it's convenient to their story or overall agenda.. This is what I see in the national coverage.

Re: What is wrong with ESPN??

Let me say something in defense of ESPN here.

They have a story on their hands today that they are not accustomed to covering. Star athletes in the prime of their careers and in the middle of their seasons just don't get killed [maybe murdered with pre-meditation?] very often. In fact, I'm trying to think of a previous case with all of those factors in it. I can't come up with one that has all of the factors. ESPN is "feeling its way" in its coverage here...

There was more "info" to report in the T.O suicide nonsense and the Ben Roethlisberger accident stories because there were more "publicity folks" involved and fewer "police folks". When the police are investigating a homicide - particularly one that has all the earmarks of being a "really high profile case" - they tend to play their cards very close to their vest. So, ESPN - and the rest of the media - cannot come up with new info on any regular basis. And ESPN does have lots of time to fill on the air...

So, what does ESPN have at its disposal to talk about. It can show Sean Taylor playing football at Miami and in Washington. They can show his highlight plays. They can show his teammates/coaches saying what a wonderful person/player he was. [They even have to be careful there lest someone criticize them for "intruding on the grief" suffered by those players/coaches.] Then what? Remember, ESPN has lots of time to fill on the air...

What else is "background info" here? That's the sordid stuff that seems to get folks riled up here. But there isn't all that much more that ESPN has at the moment.

And if they just mentioned his killing and then ignored the story, people here would be angry at ESPN for snubbing Sean Taylor and/or the Redskins and/or ...

No one is really to blame for the coverage of this tragedy so far because there just isn't enough factual info yet to make it into anything meaningful.

And for those of you who are angry at ESPN's coverage, just wait until Nancy Grace and Larry King get on the story.

I think if BF died of a drug overdose or at a party the focus would be there. Favre's partying days were years ago now and the addiction to drugs he had a prescription for was even maybe 5 years ago. Most of the ST things were barely 2 years ago and most of those were negative. If ST had a past of singing in the church choir and helping little old ladies across the street then that's what the media would be talking about but for better or worse he didnt have that kind of past. The media is only showing his history, the good, bad & ugly.

In light of the circumstances I'll agree to disagree with you on this. My past personal experience in that field tells me the media tend to be selective historians on stories (whatever makes the story more salacious) and is generally less gracious to those who don't choose to be media friendly.

I'm sure they are selective but what I am saying is that ST was only 24, he didnt have much of a history to select from and what was there could be seen as negative.

Everything but HS has been on ESPN throughout the day, and probably online I imagine. But where is it on the official network of the NFL? Why no outrage over that?

Bottom line, if you don't like it don't watch. Parents just lost their child, a child just lost her father. And yet we all want to bitch about the media coverage. Fine, whatever.

I personally don't have a big problem with ESPN specifically as I do the media in general. When the story first broke yesterday, most media outlets led their coverage with the all the bad stuff. Certainly as the news of his death came out and the hours passed, the broadcasts have softened quite a bit. I understand they have an obligation to report the facts, but the emphasis on the bad over the good just irked the sh!t outta me. That was my issue. And you gotta admit, hearing Skip Bayless run his mouth about the negatives is maddening.

I don't buy it. Yes, this is unprecedented on some level, but ESPN like most of media outlets are reaching for the most convenient narrative here - "Yet another young star athlete caught in the cross-fire of violence."

I believe ESPN calls itself the "Worldwide Leader In Sports? Well then act like it! Don't re-hash what everyone is re-hashing. Dig deep and get beneath the surface. In other words, do some reporting not repeating. Get on the front end of this story and tell us something we don't already know. And because they are a national outlet, they have a much bigger responsibility.

As far as background info not available, if ESPN can routinely run footage of a guy running touchdowns in college, dunking a basketball in high school, swinging a golf club at the age of three, and other background facts that we aren't privy to, I'm sure they have the resources to talk about the good human being Sean Taylor is.

I hear ya SS. But, given the gravity of the situation and how emotions are running high, I hope you can realize that people are being overly critical and sensitive about anything that is said about the guy.

As I said above, I love ESPN and we'd all be worse off without it. Moreover, his previous run-ins with the law are newsworthy. However, it is pretty disgusting to hear some people talk about Sean as though he had it coming and to give a lot of air time to his past problems which, so far, are totally unrelated to the tragedy at hand. It's akin to talking about how a woman likes to dress just after she was raped. Totally insensitive and indicative of a lack of timing if you ask me. Such comments are not limited to people at ESPN, I've heard them from people working for various news outlets. Such comments have not changed my opinion of ESPN or those other organizations, but they have changed my opinion of the people expressing them.

Re: What is wrong with ESPN??

A couple of points about the press covering this story:

1. Reporters will often confuse press availability with the quality of a person's character. Someone that won't help them do their work must not be a good person. For those of us who are not in the media and are even a little skeptical of the press ourselves, this confusion is particularly irritating. Does anyone doubt that if Taylor had been source for Bayless or a guest on Cowterd's show that they would be singing a different tune today? A greater effort needs to be made to treat everyone fairly and not play favorites with sources. This is called objectivity.

2. Taylor lives in the same kind of affluent neighborhood that a lot of these reporters like Skip Bayless live in. It's much easier to believe that Taylor brought this on himself through his life choices than it is to think that it was merely a random occurrence that could happen to anyone - even those in million dollar homes. This is called denial.

3. In watching ESPN2 this morning Mike Golic and the other Mike's stand in were trying to be sensitive to the situation but it was obvious as the show dragged on that ESPN's connections to the Redskins are tenuous at best and they were not able to line up anyone (except for Mort and Clayton who were going to be on anyways) to talk with them about it in a meaningful way at least at that early hour. Perhaps this will compel them to repair the breach. I have been extremely critical of ESPN in the past but in fairness, they are at somewhat of a disadvantage when it comes to the Skins and all of that is not their fault.

It's denial to pretend that death doesn't come for each of us. When you suggest that Taylor brought this on himself you are trying to make yourself exempt somehow. As the man said,

"While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer's pride, security

Won't fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes

I think the ESPN coverage has been and continues to be a joke. Shapiro is right about this. ESPN is the self-proclaimed leader of sports news right? That means they have to be held to a higher standard. They screwed this up horribly and have still not found the appropriate tone for dealing with a story of this gravity, imo.

Re: What is wrong with ESPN??

This isn’t necessarily an indictment of ESPN, but this thread was the most logical place to post comments about what I’m listening to on ESPN Radio. Colin Cowturd is again spewing more trash about ST and basically warned listeners that if you couldn’t handle the ugly truth, turn the dial. I almost did, but wanted to listen anyway. He talked about Michael Wilbon coming on Tirico’s show later today to discuss ST and how he (Cowturd) essentially has a man-crush on Wilbon and his latest take on this tragedy. Cowturd further stated that ST was guilty of really bad judgment and even if ST had begun to turn things around in his life and distanced himself from his old followers, “just because you clean the rug it doesn’t mean you’ve cleaned the stains.”

But the thing that really got me was when Cowturd recanted a conversation he had w/ Stephen A. Smith in the elevator regarding ST’s death. Smith said that because ST was shot “down stairs,” that this was most certainly a “message.” What?! Are you kidding me? How does Smith know that as fact? Did that “message” mean that ST was having relations with another man’s women or something?? That’s what Smith seems to be implying. I would assume the altercation occurred in darkness, the perp was confronted by ST and took a shot, missed, and took another one possibly running from a man brandishing a machete! Did Smith ever consider that the perp was trying to get the hell out of there and didn’t take time to plant his feet and take more careful aim? Give me a break.

I fear we are just going to hear more uninformed speculation on this and it makes things even tougher when it comes from blowhards like Cowturd, Smith, and now maybe even Wilbon, who I once respected. The media just doesn’t get it. At least practice a little patience before opening your mouth, typing on your computer, or writing on paper. We will ultimately discover more details about this incident, but until then, these clowns need to shut the hell up.

The thing that's so unfortunate is that suppose this does turn out to be something scandalous. Does Cowherd think that he will have proven anything by assuming the worst in advance? Does he think a chorus of people will be singing his praises and congratulating him on his brilliant insight? He probably does. He's that awful. Cowherd has NCAA. And he's hideously untalented to boot.

Agreed...Let's face it, none of us is perfect. All of us has things in the past we wish we could forget. From what we can tell ST had a shady past, moved on, and perhaps it came back to haunt him. This is no reason to call a man out on his past after his death. You'd think being murdered was enough without having your name dragged through the dirt. I doubt anyone would be okay with people discussing their past transgressions and insinuating they deserved what they got, especially on the day of their death. Why is ST different? Because he is famous? Perhaps...

But if you want my opinion its this. The media has no other angle to take, it is as simple as that. ST gave them nothing to work worth while he was alive, but what they could witness was his legal troubles and what not. Now, to make the story interesting, they are using what they can so that people will watch. Personally, I think it is despicable, but I guess that is why I wont be a journalist. And to be fair, the news only reports what people want to hear, so if people didnt buy into this type of thing then they wouldnt report it.

All in all, its a shame that for the sake of ones family and friends the media cant take the gloves off for a day or two you know? But I guess thats the nature of the beast.
This is the problem with douchebag talking heads, regardless of their field (sports, politics, etc). They pollute what passes for journalism these days with borderline slander, wholly fabricated theories, and half-baked rumors, and if it turns out they're wrong, they never have to apologize, because there's usually some other scandal breaking or being manufactured that they turn their sights on.

If they're "right", though, even if it's in the most trivial or convoluted way, they'll bang that drum and continue to destroy whatever figure or institution they're savaging, until it's gone, because it's a "ratings fountain" for them.

The only way to beat these assclowns is to stop listening to them.
Cowturd further stated that ST was guilty of really bad judgment and even if ST had begun to turn things around in his life and distanced himself from his old followers, “just because you clean the rug it doesn’t mean you’ve cleaned the stains.”.
As I've said before in another thread, the big problem with this line of reasoning is that it suggests that it's okay to condemn an individual for youthful mistakes, as if growing up and being an adult human being is somehow a game of razor-thin margins where perfection is the only way to survive and win.

This is just utter crap, and I guarantee that nearly everyone on this board, as well as every one of those blowhards on the radio and TV, can probably think of some foolish incident in their youth that could have cost them their life in the form of accidental death or a jail sentence. If not, you led a pretty sheltered life as a teenager.

I'm not a huge fan of judging others, but there are obvious lines where it's appropriate and those where it's inappropriate. A guy like Pacman Jones, who doesn't seem to be learning his lessons in any way, or really making any effort to change? That's pretty obvious.

But to spew crap like, "cleaning the rug doesn't remove all the stains" is really hurtful, because it implies that a man who HAD realized the mistakes of his youth and WAS trying to be a better person, and by all accounts SUCCEEDING, somehow had it coming. And that's just completely counter to what most Americans believe.

This is ridiculous. There are some guys out there that are doing the right thing. the guys on Sirius NFL radio have said many positive things about Sean, and have made sure that people know that Sean was a changed man. that is what one of the very tragic things about this situation. The guy was doing the right thing.

Yep, after just now hearing Cowturd suggest we Redskin fans turn the dial if we didn't like what we were hearing, I believe I'll do just that. Goodbye Cowturd, I'll never return to this portion of ESPN Radio. I'll look into purchasing a subscription to Sirius NFL Radio instead. He even had the gall to tell us to return to our "message boards" where we think we have the greatest team on earth. :smashfrea

My biggest gripe about the media is - the nature of sports journalism encourages them to be egotistical, cynical, judgmental, disrespectful, and most of all self-righteous loud-mouths. And then on top of that - these opinions are taken as fact by viewers or listeners that also don't know shit.

Get the fuck off your high horse assholes. Don't you guys have respect for anything? Everything is free-game for them to attack.

What I have found out about them with all of this is - they base their opinions on assumptions and rumors.

It's hard to listen to this load of crap right now. I will stop listening to Colin Cowherd and stop watching Jamie Dukes and Deion Sanders.
