Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I just dont know how an organization that has so much money tied up in one position would be justified in using high draft picks, and then throw another 10-20 million at an unproven player. Moss if healthy can play a #1. He has shown the last few weeks he can get open, I think he is limited by the coaching staff in some degree. Now, I do agree we would benefit from a true #2 guy. also, who is to say another year in Als offense these guys wouldn't flourish (randel el, caldwell, trash ect)
We all have an opinion, I guess we'll find out in April. I dont see how any pick would be wrong since we really haven't done crap with the current roster. Only thing that we should NOT draft is a QB. so, if they go WR.. so be it. He better be a complete stud.
I would normally agree with you, but then I looked at Moss' stats. Outside of the Pro Bowl year in '05 there's nothing there that speaks to his ability to be a #1. Last year I thought it was because of Brunell's lack of arm, but then what's the excuse this year? And it can't be because of safeties playing over the top, because all year I've seen us line up in a Cover 2 shell and consistently give up big plays, well aside from when we had Meast patrolling back there. I don't think another year in the offense has anything to do with it, because Lloyd was here for two years and he actually regressed. And supposedly this offense is pretty simple, it has to be if Caldwell and McCardell can come in mid-season and contribute right away. So we have money tied up in the position, but we're not getting our money's worth, how do we fix that one? |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I think Crabtree from Texas Tech will be the surprise of the draft. I think he could be had in the late first and lower second rounds and will be a huge success.
|
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
It's hard to say whether I am pleased with our receivers. Sometimes they play great sometimes you have to wonder. I really think that Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell were great pickups. If McCardell wants I think he has another 1-2 years left in the tank. As for Reche, when he is thrown to he catches it, which is what we need here obviously. He probably won't ask for a big contract so I would try to lock him up for another couple years. I also believe that that Mix kid could be a factor. He is just too big not to be.

I agree that Crabtree will be a beast. But he's only a freshman (which makes his #'s even more unbelievable). Unfortunately he has to play 2 more years before he's eligible for the NFL Draft.... |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
How about some consistent playcalling and a decent gameplan first? With a healthy O-line, I think our offensive weapons are fine. We need depth at O-line, and you can never have too much help on the defensive side of the ball (especially at safety :( ). Let's try that before proclaiming a WR as a cureall.

Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
Well, if we're ultimately evaluating where we need to improve, what's the thinking of the potential of our young D-guys? Between Montgomery, Blades, Rocky Mac, Golston and Wilson, does anyone think--or read about any so-called experts that think--one of these guys could be a stud? Montgomery is of course seeing more action, and RM has been a starter all year, but what's the long-term potential of all of these guys?
|
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I hope that we can find the answer either through the draft or on our own team, because year after year we look for the answer in free agency and our hit/miss ratio has to be 1:4 at best. So the chances of us actually identifying and landing that free agent are slim at best, probably because we hold things like "character" above "talent." Because while we were trying to move up to get Calvin Johnson there was no thought about us going to get Randy Moss.
I'm not saying character shouldn't play a role, but if the Sean Taylor media coverage proves anything its that we don't really know these guys as well as we may think. |

I didn't know that until I looked him up yesterday and I was like DAMN. He's going to be the next can't miss WR prospect. |

I was thinking about Randy Moss too, and I'll bet there are lots of teams wondering why they didn't pursue him. Problem is, he came to the Pats for way less because he wants a ring. He wouldn't have gone anywhere else unless the offer was out of this world. Not only that, knowing our season, he probably would have gotten injured. |
According to a lot of the draft sites, we could get the best OG available in the middle to late second round.
thats true a lot of years, and i'm always up for taking an OL guy in the 2nd or 3rd every year forever. It's just a good idea cause of the value (high chance of being a good starter, low pay, low risk). as for WRs, I do like DJ Hall. I have a huge Alabama fan as a friend, so i've seen him a bit. i REALLY like slaton and mcfadden, but those guys would be a waste for us right now :/. as for mccardell and caldwell... as long as those guys are our #3/#4/#5, they're good depth and worth keeping as long as they're cheap. |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I've read that Chad Johnson will be available (and that he's unhappy in Cincy). A malcontent, to be sure, but talk about a big talent. I'd still be inclined against, because character counts.
|
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I'd like to see bigger WRs. The Redkins don't have the prototypical big-body like TO, Plaxico, or Moss. I was at the game on Sunday and saw Mix. He's huge! Curious to see if he produces at all.

Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
How many times has Moss been open deep and Jason has just missed him? We'd be doing much better if JC could put some air under the ball. The way he throws it, if it's not exactly on target (which his long ball isn't) the receiver can't get to it.

We can't afford him, Cincy would likely ask for a 1st rounder plus something else, and he's not the kind of player I want on my team. |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
85 would be a great addition, but with the money and what not, i don't really see it happening, which is too bad.

Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
And look what Brady is doing now with quality WRs around him.
Moss was great in 2005 but that's ancient history. Since then he's been injured and inconsistent. It's time to find a true #1 WR. You can't count on a guy like Mix who we picked up off a practice squad.
None of that works for Brady if his line is not giving him the time to pass. As much as I would like a big time WR, I think we have to start building in the trenches. |
Just to get away from the game a little bit, and to think about our WR situation for the future. Does anyone else think that McCardell might have one more year and that maybe we should extend Caldwell a couple years?
If ARE returns healthy and we cut Lloyd, we'll still have a pretty good stable of receivers. A lot of people are talking about taking a receiver in the draft, but this looks pretty good to me. McCardell has been a great possession receiver and Caldwell has caught almost everything throw his way so far.
I would say they are all going to come back. As much as we need a stud wr there are other needs that are more pressing. |

Maybe our own 85 will come back and play up to his potential. I mean he can't do much if they don't put him in the game and throw him the ball. I know I'm grasping. |

Pipe dream. Lloyd is as good as gone. |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
I am strongly AGAINST drafting a WR with our 1st or 2nd pick...maybe if we see some talent there in the later rounds for a big target. The reason is that WR's in this class are high risk-high reward whereas D-linemen and O-linemen (who we need more) are much safer picks. Our philosophy for this draft should be to build around the talented core we already have b/c we are young team on the cusp of the playoffs. We should reinforce the positions that are getting older and that need some talent upgrade (D-line, O-line, CB). The WR core we have is fine, minus 1 big target guy. If we can get an Andre Johnson or someone that'd be great but i don't think thats gonna be the case given our current cap status. Plus these late pick WR's tend to pan out b/c they are talented players with an injury or some question mark that teams didn't want to gamble on with an early pick.

Lloyd is as good as gone.
I would say he is as good as gone if Gibbs stays on another year. I'm not a cap geek but I know if he cut it's a pretty big cap hit. Does the team want to eat that? I don't know. |

They ate it for Arch, I don't see why they won't for Lloyd. The Lloyd experiment is over and it was a giant failure. No sense in trying to make it work any longer. Looks like we'll eat about $4M, that's really not too bad. |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
Here are a couple of big WR's in the 2008 draft that may be available with the Skins pick. Please note I advicate using the 1st round pick on a DE, but if we have to go WR than here is a list I think of WR's that may fit the bill:
Adarius Bowman, Oklahoma State Height: 6-4. Weight: 215. 40 Time: 4.48. Projected Round: 1. In his first year at Oklahoma State, Adarius Bowman had 1,181 yards and 12 touchdowns. Caught 13 passes for 300 yards and four scores against Kansas. If Bowman runs a 4.4, he's definitely going in the top 20. D.J. Hall, Alabama Height: 6-3. Weight: 190. 40 Time: 4.44. Projected Round: 1-2. Caught 62 passes for 1,056 yards with an inexperienced quarterback throwing to him. If John Parker Wilson improves, Hall's stock will soar. James Hardy, Indiana Height: 6-6. Weight: 215. 40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round: Top 20 Pick. Caught at least five passes in all but one game starting in October 2006. Had nine receptions for 151 yards and a TD at Purdue. Jaison Williams, Oregon Height: 6-4. Weight: 243. 40 Time: 4.57. Projected Round: 1-2. An intriguing prospect. Look at his weight. How can anyone defend him inside the end zone? If Jaison Williams can run a 4.5, he'll go in the first round. Caught 68 passes for 984 yards and six touchdowns in 2006. Limas Sweed, Texas Height: 6-5. Weight: 218. 40 Time: 4.54. Projected Round: 2. I've dropped Sweed a bit because it's quite apparent that his 40 time will really hurt him. I have a feeling Limas Sweed's stock may slip come Combine time (see 40 time), but the fact remains that he's the top possession receiver in this class. Check out NFL Draft Dog's Scouting Report. I got this from an nfl draft site for what it is worth (I know there are countless of them out there - here is the link.... WalterFootball.com: 2008 Wide Receiver Rankings
I would prefer the Redskins not go after an overpriced free agent and concentrate on the draft. I've seen Hardy, Hall and Williams play a few times and I'm impressed with all of them. Especially James Hardy. The guy has speed, size and great hands. The Redskins need a big receiver. All their receivers are small and that's why they have a hard time scoring in the red zone. I like Santana Moss and Randle El but Brandon Lloyd can go. Keenan McCardell will probably retire but if he returns for league minimum, I would keep him. Reece Caldwell is an serviceable backup. James Thrash value is his versatility. |
Re: Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell: 2008 Plans?
The Redskin draft needs, as I see it:
1) Defensive end - This has been a problem for a few years. Montgomery and Golston were good finds. Andre Carter is ok. Daniels is getting too old. They need a stud left defensive end. 2) Offensive line depth - When healthy, the offensive line is a strength. I really like Stephen Hester. Need more youthful depth. You never can have too many quality linemen. 3) Cornerback - Again, you can never have too many quality corners. This is a passing league and you need someone to stay with those receivers. |
