He definitely had help, but he makes some really bad decisions at times. He's kind of a gunslinger like Favre was in the 90s, but without as good of a supporting cast to make up for his bad choices.
To compare Romo to Brett Favre is a real slap in the face to knowledgable football people. He can't even carry Favre's jockstrap. Favre's a future HOF'er and Romo may end up being a flash in the pan.

Well, that's an intelligent post.

There's a difference between comparing styles of play and the actual play itself. "Knowledgable" sports fans know that.

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

I don't think he choked and I absolutely don't think the weekender in Cabo negatively affected the game. The problem is they had little to play for in the closing weeks and nothing to play for in week 17. The problem is they listened to the media talk about how good they were (especially Romo) and they coasted through December. Then, when it came time to flip the switch back into "all out effort" mode, they couldn't. For this reason if no other, Belicheck is a great coach and leader. Can you imagine the Pats ever feeling okay after a whooping like the one the Skins gave Dallas?

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

He DEFINITELY had help. The Cowboys were penalized 11 times for 84 yards. There were multiple drops. Gurode, who somehow is a probowler, couldn't snap the ball in the shotgun to save his life.

On a day where the Cowboys ran the ball 33 times for 154 yards and a TD, Romo had 201 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT. Not awesome, but not horrible. Those 201 yds could have easily been 301 if not for the dropped balls. And the pick wasn't necessarily a bad choice. He had no room to run, and it was 4th and 11. What was he supposed to do, throw it out of bounds? He had to try to make something happen.

I know, I know, it sounds like I'm a Romo apologist. Absolutely not. I just think the team as whole choked, from coaches all the way down. Not just Romo. I do fault him for getting pretty frazzled there at the end though.

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

Tony was forcing at the end of the game. On plays where he should've thrown the ball away, he held onto it and tried his best to make a play. And of course, over throwing his WRs and throwing into double (maybe triple) coverage on that last play. Maybe it was the playcalling, but Tony didn't have to go for all the marbles, he could've gotten the first down and maybe had time for one last play.

I think Romo had come unglued. Sure, he had help with some dropped passes (Crayton) but he certainly didn't help matters toward the end of the game.

I'd like to think we broke them in the last week of the season. I will say that Dallas fans stepped up huge when Sean was killed. They really showed so much class and I will never forget it.

I think they were out of timeouts at that point, so the call may have been to go end zone at all costs. Who knows. Game on the line, though, he certainly wasn't making great choices.

That's why when people say the last game is meaningless, that's a bunch of hog wash! Especially when the last game of the season is against your divisional rival AND your rival is playing to secure a spot in the playoffs. We beat up their starters and took it out on their backups in the fourth quarter. I don't care what state of mind they were in in that last game. I believe they went into the playoffs feeling a bit vulnerable.

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

I do not believe that Romo is a choke artist. He is just very unfortunate in his first 2 playoff appearances. He is going to get it done sooner or later. Maybe not a Superbowl, but he will get some playoff wins. It is the Playoffs and only one team can win. We would be having the same conversation about Eli, if he would have been on the losing side today. What I think is ironic is that no one has started bagging on Peyton yet. Didn't he have a reputation for blowing it in the "big game"? I guess that 1 Superbowl win changes all of that. The fact of the matter is that Peyton is one of the Best QB's of all time, but does not have the best track record in the Playoffs. To call Romo a choke artist after only 2 seasons is definately premature. In all honesty, Romo is one of the top 2 or 3 Quarterbacks in the NFC right now. Lets wait until he finishes his career before we put the choke artist label on his work. When it is all said and done and Romo turns out to never win a Playoff game, then I will lead the charge of Romo taunting. Until then, leave the guy alone.

Seriously though, I love this Dallas collapse. I think this team is only going to go down from here. TO is getting older as is T. Glenn and a good portion of their line. Wade Phillips' record in the playoffs is no longer a fluke, it's a trend.
Dallas Sucks.

1st nfc number 1 seed to lose in divisional round since te nfl made the playoffs 12 teams

but -: 0-1 coincendence
0-2 becoming a trend
0-3 hemlich manuever time
i say one more loss and then he can get that label because eli manning was 0-2 in the playoffs before this year

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

Last year, he lost a game on the road to a Seattle team when both the Cowboys and the Hawks were playing bad football. He threw pretty well, but didn't execute his duty as a holder. That of course has nothing to do with him being a good QB.

He didn't play well yesterday. But we have no trends to speak of. I can say that I'm:

99.9% sure that Romo played below his career playoff ability yesterday.
00.1% sure that this is a good example of Romo's playoff ability yesterday.

When it's 50-50, we can start talking choke artist. Until then, this is all worthless fan babble not worthy of the Warpath.

SmootSmack 01-14-2008 01:32 AM

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

How did you ascertain what his career playoff ability is to be able to say with over 99% certainty that he played below it yesterday?

GTripp0012 01-14-2008 01:42 AM

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?
How did you ascertain what his career playoff ability is to be able to say with over 99% certainty that he played below it yesterday?
Because as far as I can tell, there is not a measurable difference between a player's regular season numbers and his playoff numbers.

Historically, quarterback production tends to be down a bit in the playoffs, because the defense quality is so much better. However, there isn't a single case of a guy who consistently got his team to the playoffs and consistently delievered rough performances to the point where you could say it was a trend.

Peyton is the most famous example, but he has 3 playoff games with a QB rating over 135. He's got the same number of games under 60, but that's to be expected if you are playing great defenses every week.

The definition of a choke artist is a guy who lacks the ability to perform in the big game: that is to say that he will NEVER play well in a playoff game at any point in his career (because he lacked the ability to do so, not because he just happened not to), and that's a pretty tall claim.

I say 99.9% on Romo, because if a choke artist truly existed in football, he would be the very first.

GTripp0012 01-14-2008 01:43 AM

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

I assume his career playoff ability to be just a hair below his career regular season ability: pretty good.

For the record:

Tom Brady games under 60 QB rating in the playoffs: 1

Tom Brady games over 135 QB rating in the playoffs: 1

Before yesterday: 0

Lets see manning is 7-6 in the playoffs, counting the superbowl but the difference he has never bobbled the snap of a 10 yard FG for the game winner. Romo may not be a choke artist but flying down to mexico with your girlfriend the week before the big game is no way of increasing your chances of victory. Peyton, or Brady would never do that.

You took what I said a little out of context. The major discussion is whether or not it is too soon to call Romo a choke artist. My answer is yes it is premature. I used Peyton as an example of a guy who always got crap for not winning playoff games consistently. I am not saying that Romo is Peyton, but it is too early to tell who will have the better career when it is all over. The vacation issue that you brought up has no bearing on the thread question. Going on vacation does not earn you the label of "choker". It just means that you may have questionable work ethic or priorities. Either way it is not my place to decide. That is between him, his co-workers, and his boss; and has zero relevance to this conversation.

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

If romo had come out and blew this game, I'd say we'd have a case to call him a choker, but that's not what happened. Not even close. He played well. Definitely well enough to win. It's not his job to catch passes or pass block. Or call the plays. How Garrett got away from running the ball in the second half, I'll never know. I'm supremely happy they lost, but I don't lay this on Romo. THe int was with 10 seconds left when he had to force it. At that point, he was counting on a receiver to make a play and, just as they had all day, they failed.

Regarding Romo and Simpson:

If his girlfriend was any anonymous woman, no one would have even cared that he was in Cabo. If anyone did find out they probably would've been happy because he took Witten and some other teammate along with him after being told by coach to get away from the game for a week. This b.s. is all smoke, no fire.

He had a couple dropped passes, but still, 50% completion percentage? He didn't play that well at all. Most of those completions were for short gains too.

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

yeah, but how many of those incompletions were drops or throwing off his back foot because he had a Giant's Dlineman in his face. He was under duress the entire 2nd half after the giants wore down his o line. Don't get me wrong, he's still a douche but I don't think he choked.

Yeah but this isn't something you evaluate with numbers. Romo's career is so young, and he's played only two playoff games. So looking at stats obviously isn't going to tell you much. What we do know, though, is that Tony Romo has started off the last two seasons absolutely red hot, but then played like asscrack coming down the stretch. He's not a choke artist because of his playoff performances, he's a choke artist because:

1) His December performances have been awful.

2) Like Matty said, he was not acting one bit like a leader in the 4th quarter yesterday. He was bitching at his guys. He was panicking. He was playing frantically. There was no poise whatsoever, no confident calm to his demeanor. You can just tell by looking at the guy - he's a decent QB with decent talent - but he has no intangibles. He's got an unorthodox delivery and a gunslinger's mentality just like Brett Favre, but none of Favre's take-charge leadership. That doesn't reflect in the numbers, you can only see that by watching the game and paying attention to human behavior.

So far in his young career, he's definitely a choke artist. He's got plenty of time to turn that around, but I honestly don't like his chances in the NEXT heat of the moment - he's just not a leader.

Did you actually watch the game? If so how can you call Romo a choker? The guy was under serious pressure all game long. Give the Giants some credit cause they can rush the passer with their front 4. What about throwing some blame to Crayton for dropping a potential TD? What about Jason Garrett who IMO called a shitty game and seemed to go away from the running game? I'm with TO on this one. Because he was bitching at his offensive line, playing frantically when under pressure, was taking huge sacks (10-12 yard losses) instead of standing in, stepping up in the pocket, and taking the sack for just a 5 yard loss. He also got called for a key intentional grounding penalty helping to kill one of his drives. He was in the pocket and purposely heaved it practically into the stands. Then on another play, he had rolled out of the pocket but failed to throw the ball away (which would not have been intentional grounding) and instead took a huge sack. You could tell he was rattled and wasn't using his head.

If I'm a Cowboys fan this would drive me NUTS about him. People have figured out that he's going to run away from pressure and try to throw on the run rather than in the pocket. He keeps running back ten to twenty yards and either heaves it up, PRAYING someone comes down with it or takes a HUGE sack.

And no skinsfan69, it's not because they date hot chicks, most of us here date or are married to hot chicks. It's because they are total douches, and at least Brady unlike Romo takes some responsibility for his team.

I agree. He was rattled. But I don't see many QB's in the NFL that don't get rattled when they are under pressure. No question he screwed up. But what about Dallas getting beat on special teams? Allowing two big returns that set up NYG scores? All the blame gets thrown to Romo. He should get some blame but to call him a choker is just going too far.

Schneed10 01-14-2008 09:24 AM

Re: Can we now officially call Romo a choke artist?

One of the things that never gets measured in a QB's numbers, at least not the traditional ones we look at (18-36 for 201 yards, one TD, one INT), is the sacks and sack yards he takes. Romo's got a bad habit of retreating from the rush and taking huge sacks kind of like Eli has done. Romo put his team into several 2nd and 20s in the 4th quarter yesterday by failing to get rid of the ball or failing to minimize the sack yardage he lost on the play.

When you're in the heat of the moment, someone with toughness and courage stands in and says "If I'm getting sacked, I'm going to stare them in the face as they're hitting me. Bring it on." Someone without leadership, who plays anxiously and frantically (and possibly a little fearfully), will retreat from the rush at times, and make bad decisions at others.

Tom Brady is the former. Tony Romo is the latter.

Can anyone around here actually give the NYG some credit?? 9 straight road wins in the NFL is just ridiculous.
Yeah they were not keeping guys off Romo, true. But step up and take a 5 yard sack, don't run back and take a 10 yard one. And don't commit intentional grounding. And don't bitch at your offensive line in the middle of the game - exactly what does that accomplish?

I agree with this. The Giants won this game.

Romo's not a choke artist BECAUSE of this game. But he is a choke artist because he's so lousy coming down the stretch, and he's shown a tendency to get nervous and frantic in key moments of games (dropping the snap in Seattle - nerves), intentional grounding penalties against NYG (not thinking because he's not poised).
I think it's about time QB Romeo stops with the little shit-eating grin he's always sporting and gets serious. He had an awful second half.

I don't know if we can call him a choke artist. I mean, the botched FG hold last year was awful, but hats off to Giants DC Spagnolo for his halftime adjustments. The Cowpukes could only muster 3 second half points, and the Giants got tons of pressure of QB Romeo after he went untouched in the 1st half.
Yep, "Smiley Boy" Romo wasn't hasn't been all smiles for over a month now. Czaban called it best about a month back - Romo is a fine QB when the offense is humming - all smiles and fun. But when the offense is in crisis, we'll see whether Romo can provide true leadership. Smiley Boy showed his true colors yesterday.
