This need to make a marketing splash is indicative of a very childish inabilty on the part of Dan Snyder to defer gratification. He can't even swallow the idea of a ho-hum announcement in the runup to the Super Bowl in order to achieve someting truly marketable down the road. If he doesn't do the right thing here, one can only conclude that he is really only interested in making money. My position heretofore has been that while he certainly is in it for the money, he understands that winning is the best way to do that. I'm starting to think that he feels that winning is more like a bonus that he may at some point slide ass-backwards into, but is not his primary strategy going forward. The first goal is to protect the bottom-line and if he can win as well then that would be great. It's a losing strategy.
I certainly hope that's not the case, but if it is then the only thing that will save us is for Snyder to sell the Redskins. Fat chance of that happening unless happened to offer a partnership to Joe Gibbs.

Re: Rumors: Big Name Coaches
This statement has been said and argued for and against a thousand time now this week.

Most appreciate that Snyder is taking his time to make sure that he picks the right guy, with the future of this franchise in mind. One (like yourself I assume) might argue that GW is the only "right guy," but none of us can say that for sure. What we know is that the players like GW and that if he were named HC this would presumably go a long way towards continuity.

However, I am sure that he and Snyder have discussed every detail of the franchise imaginable, beyond what you or I can even fathom. So there is a possibility that GW sees a future for the Redskins that doesn't jive well with Snyder's and perhaps Gibb's vision (like some have suggested he may want to do away with Saunders, and this would disrupt said continuity that he as a candidate is supposed to offer).

All and all I agree that this decision will be very telling about the maturity of Snyder. We will not be able to make that call immediately, however, and by no means can anyone claim that GW is the only decision that proves his maturity. In the end we will have to wait to see how this new coach performs to be able to make any statement about Snyder's success/failure in making this decision. And even if the coach doesn't do much, who is to say that given the circumstances he didnt make th right decision. Let me put it this way, since you are convinced that GW is the only sound decision, if GW is the next HC, but fails miserably, will Snyder have made the right choice? Who can tell?

Snyder has a difficult decision to make here. Give him credit for at least taking his time to weigh all possibilities. If he chooses Brian Billick then you can go ape shit if you want, but it may be more prudent to wait and see how things turn out. (Personally I would say to hell with prudence if Billick were hired, and would join you in going ape shit)
I agree that he has multiple plays here that allow him to look like a changed man but that seems to be because of the limited field of candidates. The thing I find disheartening is that if he could get Cowher or some other big name, it seems he would immediately do it. The only thing more disheartening is the fact that based on what one reads, the majority of Redskins fans would willingly fall for it yet again. If it's not Williams the thing I hope for is that the the general response of fans upon hearing the name of the new coach would be, "Never heard of him." I thought the Ravens owner expressed the right attitude when discussing his objective in making a new hire. He said, "There's a HOF coach out there somewhere, our job is to find him." Cowher, Marty, Vermeil are the past. We need to hitch our wagon to a rising star. I don't know that GW is that guy, but I'm pretty sure that Marty isn't.

I do get the feeling from Snyder that he just wants to put asses in the seats. If you take a look at his history it seems like he just wants the quick big flash and not the slow burning coals of a championship team.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but we're going to find out soon enough when he picks the next coach.

The only 2 surprising things are letting go of Jansen, and drafting a CB in the first. But those deserve a big WOW!!

Would it be cap-friendly to release Jansen? Could we trade him? Wouldn't we be penalized in the cap either way?

Also, Are there any interesting prospects at CB that may fall to us at the 21st pick?

I dont think it'd be a good idea to go CB in the first round, unless carlos really isn't in playing shape. We've picked 1st round picks in the secondary since like 03

Taylor
Landry

And don't forget about Champ before that.

If nothing else we have had incredible success drafting in the secondary early. I tend to think our biggest need is a pass-rushing DE, but far be it from me to questions GW on drafting.

His rumor mill is usually on target. The only thing I hope he's wrong on is Jansen. Give him an extension with a bonus tied to playing time. The hold up probably was Kiffen and also GW's desire to clean some of the offensive coaches. I'd like to see Buges stay but a more simplistic power running game would suit GW more. Give Portis 30 touches, Betts 10 and let JC sling it around a little more (i hate that ROMO is called the next Favre, it should be another small town Delta guy).

If GW does become the HC, try to package the 21st pick, the 4th rounder and Lloyd and Caldwell to move into top 5 for Chris Long.

Didn't we lose our fourth rounder with the whole Ducket trade?

Anyways, you must be joking. Noone would take Lloyd with his contract, much less consider him an incentive in trading a high draft pick. And I am sure that Caldwell wont add much to the offer either, and I don't think he is signed with us for next year just yet is he?

The thing that sounds off with this rumor is that Saunders hasn't been decided.

When a potential head coach is brought in, one of the first questions asked is "Who will your coordinators be?" According to this item, "Gregg was unhappy with the playcalling," which would lead me to believe he wants Saunders out. If his first request regarding his own staff isn't met, this will be an acrimonious relationship.

You know, Monte Kiffin's contract is up down in TB and he was basically insulted by their low-ball offer. Supposedly they tried to give him a REDUCTION in pay from what he made last year. There's no way in hell I could see him as our Head Coach, but with the variation of the Tampa Two that we ran last year, I could see him as our D Coordinator under G Will.

He already re-signed with TB.

Trading after June 1 cap hit 3,853 plus 09 dead cap of 5334
not the best idea?
