I am really surprised at how many of you are comfortable rooting for the Giants. Have you met their fans or watched NFC divisional games? If the Giants win I will cry.

While not entirely happy w/ my decision to do so, Matt, I have illustrated why it is a must to root for them on the 3rd and I feel my argument is pretty solid.

I rooted for NE when they played Philly, and I'll be rooting for NE this time around too.

I'm rooting for the Pats. No WAY I can support an NFC East rival. If the Giants were to win the superbowl, you could guarantee Coughlin's regime gets many more years at the helm. We all know in the NFL you build contenders through continuity and Coughlin is a good coach. But if they lose the superbowl and then have a bad season in the next couple years (as what happened to Fassell) then there's a good chance Coughlin would lose his job and they would have to start all over again.

That's what I was rooting for this year. That's what I was rooting for last year. That's how DIEHARD Skins fans think. It's called seeing the big picture.

Why you need to root for the Patriots.
 

I hadn't made this thread yet because I didn't want to be hypocritical (no way I would have rooted against the skins if they had made it to the superbowl against the pats), and then I kinda just got lazy and didn't post sooner :).

I started rooting for the Pats right after the Baltimore game. In addition to getting ever closer to the perfect mark, they were on pace to break numerous single season records. I found myself rooting for the Ravens during that game, but I sure am glad the Pats pulled it off at the end.

Why?

Because every time a team goes beyond 9-0 the Dolphins are brought up. For I don't know how many weeks they had a different member of that Dolphins team on TV asking them about the Patriots. They achieved their record in the 70's, yet every time a team starts sniffing the possibility of getting close to such a feat they're brought up (rightfully so).

So who am I to root against a team that's going for perfection? In a MUCH more dominant fashion that the Dolphins ever did. I forget the details, but was the Pats-Giants game not THE (or at least one of the) highest rated regular season games in history?

The NFL doesn't really need the help, but a team like the Patriots is GOOD for the sport. If you're a fan of footall you WILL root for the Pats. It doesn't matter if you don't like the players or the coach, because you're on this site reading this thread, so I assume you LOVE football.

Regardless of how you feel about the Patriots, you are about to witness history. Something that has NEVER been done before. We're not talking about a 14-2 or 15-1 team winning out.

You're in the position to be part of a historic moment for the NFL. A moment that will be talked about for decades to come. To root against history being made is an outright crime.


PS: This whole concept of rooting for perfection (and annoyance at people who eternally root for the underdog) first occured to me during the Mayweather - Hatton fight.

Cannot root for cheaters. Them making history is a farce. How do we know how long they were cheating before they were caught? It could have been years. I just don't think they deserve it, period. In my eyes, if they win they will always be known as the greatest team ever, that got caught cheating.... that will never be "perfect" in my book.

That's actually a good point and I hadn't quite thought about it. Unfortunately we don't have enough details about the extent of their cheating. The NFL chose not to reveal a lot. We DON'T know how long they were cheating, so we can't judge.

And is cheating cheating? If a player on your team is suspended for a certain amount of games for substance abuse/steroids, how should the games he participated in prior to the suspension be viewed as? What about previous seasons?

What about artificial stadium noise? Do the Seahawks deserve their home victories? Do the Redskins home wins for that matter still count? (it's been alleged that we too pump noise through the speakers...by our own fans).

How do we know what teams get away with what? Everyone tries to cheat in some way (from getting away with a hold to possibly having taped your opponents sidelines for the past decade.)

Again, it's a good points, but since we lack so much information (by it not being revealed by the NFL) and there is so much "potential" cheating, we must simply accept the punishments and penalties given by the league and consider teams/players having paid their "dues".

exactly what type of people are Belichick and Brady? successful? cocky? bad tempered? wouldn't you say Laron Landry has all those qualities on the field? would you want him any other way?

And as for rooting for dallas? I don't know how I would feel if it happened. Technically I should root for them, but I just don't know. Luckily only one team has done it before and only one other team is now in the position to achieve (and trump) that achievement. So chances are I'll never be presented that dilemma.

Yes, there is a lot of [I]potential[/I] cheating in the NFL and individual cheating is something to consider, but the Pats were caught red handed doing something that the NFL previously (only like a month or two before) said not to do. They weren't just accused, they were caught, and to me that's what makes it so bad.

Also, I'd rather add to our division's Super Bowl track record (a team from our division is there every other year, and win about every four years - what other division in the nfl can even say that? none, my friend. none) as opposed to giving it to the New England Al-Qaedas

I don't really care for the patriots but it's in my blood to never root for a rival team in the NFC East. just like I never draft anyone from those teams for fantasy football because I don't EVER want to have to hope for any of their players to do well.

I couldn't make up my mind until tonight. I figure I'll pull for the pats. I don't like either QB, though. Despite our game against the pats, I like belichick. If I were a player, I'd want to play for him more so than any other coach in the league. Cowher and Fisher are also high on my list of coaches I'd love to play for if i were a player.

All digression aside, when I compare the two teams, I dislike Rodney Harrison, Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and the overall arrogance of the Pats as a team. I do, however like the Tom Brady story as compared to the Eli story: Brady, being a sixth round pick and a backup people were wary of, becoming labeled the GOAT this early in his career. Eli, being the first overall pick that got his pro football family involved in his pouting session refusing to be drafted by the chargers, and he never lived up to the hype coming out of college, and is deficient in leadership qualities, which I like in a QB. He'll never be as good as his older brother, and I really don't want to hear about how great he is because he won a superbowl. Trent Dilfer (who i like a lot) won a superbowl, too.

I also can't stand Shockey, Plax, and Strahan. I'm completely indifferent toward coughlin, but wouldn't want to ever play for him. Then the giants also have the division rivalry thing going on in my head, so I gotta go with the pats.

I know I'm rambling and my opinion doesn't mean anything, but you asked for it, so there it is....

Well I just cant bring myself to cheer for the pats. I just cant stand that team, undefeated season means nothing to me because its the pats doing it. And I havent like the pats ever, so its not just because of this year. So Im convincing myself to root for the 'NFC' to win.

Who wants to root for a team with with a sourpuss QB? I've never seen Eli Manning come off the field with a smile on his face. I probably will watch the game and hope that both teams do poorly, and the quarterback gets blamed for all the mistakes. The Redskins are better than the Giants, and yes, I am a sore loser.

I don't know how anyone outside of Boston could root for the Patriots. They have a classless coach who is a total a$$ hole. I honestly believe he brainwashes that team into believing they are underdogs, when they are the New York Yankees of football. He totally ran up the score on the Redskins, and to the people who said that the Redskins needed to stop acting like little girls, well Belichik has been a pouting like a little b***h every since he GOT CAUGHT CHEATING. The league should have suspended him and they should have not allowed him to be up for coach of the year. I just hope karma catches up to them sometime, because they have been extremely lucky on a lot of things this year (crappy AFC east teams, getting Randy Moss for cheap, getting off easy for the cheating, and not having one of their players hurt while leaving them on to run up the score).

Well, I'll be rooting for the Giants...if I decide to watch the SB. I mean, I don't watch the World Series when the Yankees play, so why watch fate give the Patriots yet another Superbowl.

I must say, I think the Patriots should break the two biggest sports jinxs, the entire team should be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and Brady should be in the next Madden cover. I would bet money that nothing would happen to them.

Patriots have already won 3 of the last 5 Super Bowls. Going undefeated would only make their ego bigger. Not to mention Boston Celtics are currently the best team in the NBA and the Red Sox won the world series again. This city does not need anymore material to gloat about. I'm sorry but as much as I hate New York, New England/Boston is getting really obnoxious.

Pats haven't slaughtered anyone in their 3 wins, all by 3 points. IF I was betting I would of bet on the NYG with the 14 points. I think the Pats will win though.

I think the Giants are a rival, but let's be honest...the true rival for us is the Cowboys. Trust me, I will root against the Giants anytime during the regular season, and of course when they play us. But we're out of the playoffs and they are in the big game. I'd rather root for them, than root for the team that humiliated us in the regular season. Plus, I think the Giants winning the Superbowl will proof how tough our division is by having 3 teams in the playoffs, and having one team winning it all.

I'm rooting for the Giants because I would 1) like to see the trophy come back to the NFC. AFC has had it long enough and 2) it would be kinda cool to have two quarterback brothers win back to back Super Bowls since Peyton and the Colts won it last year.

The Miami guys didn't start out insufferable, they ended up insufferable. They weren't even the favorite in the Super Bowl, we were. These Patriots are already insufferable. They'll only get worse. The media will coddle them.

I also lived in Boston and Cambridge and I can't stand the fans (and people) there. The team is a reflection of the supercilious people I met there.

And if the Giants win it makes us look better.
