This seems quite amateurish. I wouldn't exactly call the guy a stud talent evaluator. We don't have to go that far back to see some of his "exceptional" decision making. B Lloyd at $30 mil and Archuletta. In addition, I don't think anybody could really argue against the fact that we severely overpaid for ARE (as much as I love the guy). Cerrato's track record isn't exactly Patriot-like.

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

Well now hang on folks.

Vinny was director of college scouting with the 49ers when they won a SB. He was Lou Holtz's top scouting guy when ND won a national championship. And if Gibbs is saying that Vinny and his crew had a major hand in developing our roster, then he had a hand in at least some of the following:

Anthony Montgomery
Kedric Golston
Reed Doughty
Chris Cooley
Rocky McIntosh
Chris Wilson
Stephon Heyer
Jason Campbell
Carlos Rogers
Sean Taylor
Laron Landry

Then the free agents, like Griffin, Washington, Springs, etcetera.

Vinny may have had a hand in Duckett, Lloyd, and Archuleta, which were crippling moves. But if Vinny's getting credit here, then you gotta give some love.

The tough thing is, I don't think any of us really know how much of the roster-building was Gibbs, and how much was Vinny.

Either way, the coaching decision is really the critical move. Vinny as Exec VP doesn't change much in my eyes. The new coach will work with Vinny to determine personnel needs. But it's the new coach that will have to deal with the players, and all the players want GW.

Just heard on 980 that there was some rift between GW and Cerrato.
WTF? Impressive resume?

I have not been a Cerrato basher but only because I think I properly understood his role as being less than affective towards the onfield product. If this bump entails more onfield influence, and more importantly leads to rebuilding then I am very concerned about this.
National Championship with Lou Holtz at Notre Dame, SuperBowl ring with San Francisco, Skins. Without Vinny we don't have the depth that helped us make the playoffs this year.

I guess Washington fans need a scapegoat.

"Williams does not have a close relationship with Cerrato, which is seen by some around the league as a potential factor, and Snyder met with him on four occasions, gauging their ability to coexist as well as going over football issues.

What is going on in the world? Since when did the coach have to co-exist with the front-office? Coaches and front-office guys are supposed to bump heads so that all ideas are brought to the table. And who gives a s**t what Cerrato thinks. Is he more important to this organization than a coach who has consistently lead the defense? Hope not.

Well with Joe stepping down, I don't think this should be a shocker to anyone. This is Dannys little boy.

Dan just doesn't get it! Don't think he ever will at this point!

There is absolutely NO telling which direction the organization will go!

My point exactly. As I posted earlier, we don't know Vinny's real influence in decisions. Vinny does have a solid resume & in recent years we have picked up some good players in the late rounds of the draft. Plus, it's been fashionable to bash Snyder for meddling, but at the same time do we just bash Vinny because he continues to get paid while coaches come & go?

I distinctly remember this. I hope you are right on all the way, kudos so far. Now we'll see if GW is announced as HC and Campbell moves up. If so, then all that's needed is the $ 1B+ to buy out Snyder and the "World is Ours !" :goodjob:

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

I'm no math wiz, but I can put two and two together. Let's recap:

-Snyder loves Cerrato.
-Cerrato doesn't get along with Gregg Williams.
-Fassel was Vinny and Danny's #1 choice in '04 before Gibbs expressed interest in returning.
-Williams has had 4 meetings with Vinny/Danny and not been offered the job.
-Fassel has now been interviewed twice.
-Vinny just got promoted to head of all things football related for the Skins.

I smell an imminent head coaching hire, and it ain't GW.

The pieces should fall into place rather quickly now.. Cerrato's role is specifically defined, he's going to select Fassel or Mooch as the new head coach (probably Fassel), try to retain GW but will likely have to bring in another defensive coordinator (Ron Rivera, who is a LB coach for SD perhaps?) and go from there..

I'm going to remain optimistic.. If it goes Cerrato/Fassel, that's a Super Bowl front office guy + a Super Bowl coach which is an improvement (on paper) over anything we had pre-Gibbs.

Maybe GW couldn't take a back seat to VC.

I don't see what the big deal is, he is basically doing what he did before and a bit more. Practically our GM now. As someone said before now if shit goes bad we can hold him accountable. Good move.

Don't forget that JG was the team president the last four years so picks from '04 to last year need to be looked upon in that light. Prior to '04, who knows who was really making the calls but Cerrato was here and Taylor Jacobs and Rod Gardner are names you might remember ;)

One of the great things about Gibbs was is near god like status with Snyder. hence Gibbs could over rule Snyder and he would shut up. He would never keep his mouth shut for anyone else. Snyder thinks he's a football guy and Vinny's his mouth piece.

Thats how I see it. I am not convinced that Vinny is the genius he is being made out to be, nor do I buy that he is the reason for all our woes. Now he will show his true mettle. As far as moving forward without Gibbs, this may be the best scenario, a guy that knows how to build a team, and a guy that knows how to coach. I would be a little disappointed that GW wouldn't get a chance, and I am a little wary that Danny chose Vinny over him, but if this move works I'm all for it. I don't mind the idea of Fassel being HC, but if we start seeing the bullshit we saw from this front office pre-Gibbs then we'll know whats what.

But if Gibbs is really a "consultant" and has been around Redskins Park since season's end, don't you think he has given some input on this? I don't think Gibbs wants to see all his work the past 4 seasons go straight down the shitter. What was Danny's point of hiring Gibbs in the first place if he's just gonna blow up the foundation he laid the second he leaves?

What if GW has met with Vinny/Danny 4 times because they are in extensive discussions on who all the assistants will be? What if GW is already de-facto head coach and it just hasn't been announced yet? Maybe they are just waiting until they have the entire coaching staff assembled. What if Fassel is set to be the OC? Sigh.... This is all wishful thinking...

Jacobs was a Spurrier pick (as we all remember) and if you recall, Snyder/Cerrato wanted another receiver but gave in to Schottenheimer on Gardner. That other WR? Santana Moss.

Yup, and with confirmation from Gibbs too. So, now we know, and now we can give him due credit (Good or Bad) for his decisions, and not have to hold ourselves back with questions about what he truly does.

I am still wary, as I said before, but if Gibbs endorses this then Im game to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Before Gibbs got here the record showed that the Snyder/Cerrato team had no clue how to build a winning franchise. I really hope they learned enough from Gibbs to not make those same mistakes again.

This move also pinpoints one other than Snyder to critic. I always say proof of one's ability can be seen through the results they produce, or lack thereof.

BDBohnzie 01-22-2008 05:08 PM

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

All this means is that Vinny got himself an official title, and is basically taking Team President duties left by Gibbs...which was inevitable anyways, since Snyder said he wasn't going to change the structure...

Furthermore, it also means that the new head coach will be working with Vinny to build the roster. Hey, wait a sec...I believe Gibbs did the same thing when he was here. And, it's been the status quo for years that Vinny works with Dan on personnel matters.

Why are the naysayers and the doom patrol all in a tizzy? This was going to happen no matter what. . .

But what you are overlooking is that now Vinny can be held responsible if the Skins tank. Before, he could hide under Dan's cloak, but now, in the limelight that he held at Notre Dame and San Fran, he can take the fall if things go haywire. Which, to a good many of you think will happen nonetheless.

I know there isn't much going on...but take a step back and relax and remember this was bound to happen.

WillH 01-22-2008 05:17 PM

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

Since he was named VICE President, does that suggest that there will be a president, perhaps the next coach, or am I reading into the title too much?

ChillWill 01-22-2008 05:21 PM

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

Is it too late to start a campaign to beg Coach Gibbs to re-consider one more year?

This team was only a few injuries, a few poor coaching decisions away from being
in the same position the Giants are in now. I can't believe we are going to blow
all of that up. What's more important, VC's relationship with GW or the players relationship and understanding of the philosophies of GW and AS?

I have said alot of negative things about Vinny in the past, but the truthe is, he has done an astonding job of getting talent, aside from high priced free agents. When they let him draft, he does great.

Defensewins 01-22-2008 06:20 PM

Re: Vinny Cerrato promoted to Executive Vice President

We are all entitled to our own opinions. I will respect Snyder's decision, but I will respectfully disagree with it and move on.
However, if we are back to crappy drafts and player personnel moves, if we fail to make the playoffs, I will be blaming SNYDER AND CERATTO. Nobody else!
Regardless of who they get to coach the Redskins, it will not be the coaches fault.
Snyder thinks he and Cerrato are qualified and experienced enough to run a billion dollar franchise? More power to them. The Buck now stops at Cerrato and Snyder. I don't want to hear the Cerrato apologists in a year or two giving excuses or saying he has no control. He has it now. I hope he does well. He better do well.

Good post.

Just for the sake of throwing it out there, what if Vinny played a bigger role than Gibbs in the recent personnel success stories?

And I do agree with your final point. He's already been working in a similar capacity. This is mostly a change in title.

Do you guys think that Snyder promoted Cerrato so he can take the fall if lot of fans get upset with the selection of the new head coach.

You think that Snyder would defer the selection reasoning to the new GM Vinny when he's asked about it at the press conference?

He doesn't have the title but his promotion essentially makes him similar to one.

He's like the executive vice president, something like that. Anyway, still enough of a responsibility change to have Snyder make him the bad guy if there is a lot of fan dissention.
