Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
Has it occurred to anyone that The Danny is too much fan and too emotionally invested to make a rational decision? This coaching search reminds me of so many times in the past where The Danny pined for everyone else's high profile free agents, yet allowed some of our homegrown talent to walk (B. Mitch, Smoot, Pierce, etc.). Leaving Williams and Fassel hanging is no way to conduct a search. If he was serious about McDaniel and Spagnuolo, he should have put off interviewing others until the week of the Super Bowl. The current coaching staff is being left in limbo for close to a month. I wouldn't blame Williams if he eventually got the offer then told Danny to take his job and shove it.
How else can he go about it? He couldn't put off interviewing other candidates in the meantime because until just recently there were other HC openings around the league. I see this as him conducting a thorough search of all possible candidates. Why hire someone now when someone like Spagnola or McDaniels are still possible candidates? I know everyone wants to view this as a disaster, but if you look at the other side of it maybe he just wants to make the best possible decision and he's in no rush to do so. Perhaps his downfall is he's being too patient. |
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
Who says they're hanging?
That's the thing that really bugs me about all of this. People come on here and talk like they *know* every detail about what Dan Snyder is doing. None of us do. Anything we *think* we know is nothing more than our assumptions based on the latest rumor-of-the-minute. I'm going to wait until a coach is named and the circumstances of the hire have been released until I form an opinion on all of this. |

Maybe those like myself that aren't assuming the worst are dead wrong. I'll be the first to admit it if I am, but the reality is nobody really knows much at all right now. I know some may see this as me saying that we can't have a negative opinion. I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying let's try to maintain a level head and see how this plays out. Some of these chicken little responses are just totally ridiculous. |
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
I think Snyder actually does care what the fans think, but he shouldn't. I think, having grown up a fan himself, he thinks "Oh the fans will love it if I make this big move and we bring home a Super Bowl this year." But sometimes, you just have to accept that things take time. It's sort of like that saying "Buy a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for life."
Snyder needs to remember he's more than just a fan now, and he needs to stop trying to make the impulsive moves to instantly gratifying his fan base. I believe that he is heading in that direction. Now, of course, a lot of the fans are up in arms over this. But f' them. If it gets you so worked up that you're going to cancel your season tickets, sell all your memorabilia, never watch another game and so on just because of speculation...then just do it already. Enough with the empty threats. Just leave. |
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
How much work really gets done during the month of January for a team not in the playoffs? Dont coachs and players usually get this time off anyways for a few weeks before draft prep (assuming you aretn teh scouting coach at the senior bowl). I dont think not having a coach for even a month translates to loses in September. Its not like its a QB holding out for money and not getting reps.
|
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
I get what you're saying SmootSmack about the fans, but on the other end, you can't completely ignore the fans. As I said before, one of the things I loved about Gibbs and that endeared him to us all, is that he acknowledged us all so much. Snyder does have to make the tough calls regardless of fan sentiment, but completely ignoring public opinion will lead to bad news.

While not a lot of work gets done right now I think it's mainly a review of the prior season and the start of prep for free agency and the draft. But yeah they do typically get some time off. |

Yea this is 1 of the 12 months that Spurrier would take off to play golf instead of coach. |

Did any college coachs get hired this year? I dont think so right? Saban and Petrino pretty much put a sour taste in the leagues mouth. When Pete Carroll interviewed in Atlanta I knew he wouldnt take it, hes like a god at his college and doesnt have to work near as hard.

I think the NFL has definitely soured on college coaches for now. |
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
Watch us hire Pete Carroll now...
Seriously though, some college coaches are getting picked for assistant positions such as Atlanta which just hired the Gamecocks LB coach (I think) to be their defensive coordinator. |

Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
LOL do the fans really know what they want?? I mean let's be serious. The fans change their opinions week to week, hell play to play sometimes. One week Jason Campbell is a hero, the next week people are saying Collins should be starting. One week Portis blows, the next week he's the man. If the fans got what they wanted, the team would be an absolute joke. Players would get cut on a weekly basis, and we would replace a kicker who was 29 of 35 this year because of one missed kick in the playoffs.
Fans are too emotionally wrapped up in the team to make rational, meaningful decisions. I guarantee this love for Williams would die pretty damn quick if the team opened up the season 0-4 and went on to have a miserable season.
Fans opinions go up and down all season, but the one big picture thing that nobody wants is for the Skins to operate like they did before Gibbs came back. This is a playoff team, we don't need to be gutted and overhauled. I agree 100% with Boswell's article this morning, and hope Danny reads it. |
Re: Gibbs says it can be weeks...
this is one of the reasons this franchise has been viewed as quite disfunctional. You have everyone, players, gibbs, retired players, analysts, experts all saying how much support they have for GW (analysts and experts are important) knowing we are/ where headed in the right direction. to finally get back to respectability in the NFL and the front office is trying its damnest to alienate its fan base, coaches and players. Its like Dan just can't sit back and let things go, he always has to have his hands into this team. He is the owner, i understand that, but the best decision to keep this team on the rise, keep players happy and playing hard is not to alienate them, make them feel like employees (which we formed a redskin Family this season) and make the right hire in GW.
its going to come down to no one wanting this job. GW is going to get pissed and feel disrespected,as is fassell (who cares) and just walk away from it. Plus, what coach in their right mind would take a job that they can't pick their assistant coaches. Isn't that part of being the head coach? This thing of looking for offensive coaches and defensive coaches is ridiculous. how can a head coach be successful when they can't even hire the guys they want and know how he likes to run things. makes no sense to me. |

Yeah, seriously. Picking assistant coaches is usually outside the bounds of a GM's duties, much less the owner for God's sake. Danny just wants to be like Jerry Jones, which makes me want to cry. |

From today's Washington Post
washingtonpost.com "Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, the team's executive vice president for football operations, spent Monday and Tuesday attempting to contact and interview assistant coaches Fassel wanted -- league sources said they included Baltimore's Rex Ryan, Seattle's Jim Zorn and San Diego's John Ramsdell -- but contractual stipulations precluded all but Zorn from interviewing." I hope this puts to rest the notion that they are going after assistant coaches without the potential head coach's consent. Although it's interesting to note that the other day the Post also indicated Zorn was wanted by Williams. I don't know why they even bothered talking to the Chargers. Norv isn't going to do the Redskins any favors. |

what is your opinion of this frachise? Do you think its making the right decision by dragging this one? Do you feel that this move is alienating the players, coaches, and Gibbs since he has been giving support for GW? To me, this is the most important hiring Snyder has ever had, and I think he is messing it up, which i dont think I am alone. |

Its hard to say that he's messed it up when he still hasn't even done anything. I think he's just covering all his bases and making sure he doesn't rush in to this decision. Like you said, it is his most important hire. Well, he hasn't made it yet, so we can't judge him on it. You can't mess something up before you even do it. in a lot of peoples eyes he has all ready messed things up. I know people say he is covering his bases, but seriously. According to some new sources, which I will find dont worry, Jim Mora Jr had the job if he wanted it, Fassell had the job if they could have gotten the assistance nailed down. Some people out here seem to think that the reporters who cover this team from inside the locker room and outside dont really know what they are talking about. That GW may not even take the job now, and Fassell may walk away too after what transpired the last couple of days. I for one will generally listen to the people who cover these guys for a living and know more than all of us here combined.
Plus, I have a friend who is a state trooper in louden county who does detail for the team and keeps in touch with some guys on the team, and he says they are none to happy about whats going on. saying the majority of the team is set on GW as the coach and think its incredibly stupid how this has dragged on. |

I thought Parcells leaving the Giants happen in April about 2 weeks after the Giants let B.B.(sp) go to Cleveland. |

How do we know if GW was or wasn't offered the job already? How do we know if GW is asking for more than what Snyder is offering him? Maybe Snyder offered him the HC job, but GW is asking for more? Look, in no way am I trying to defend Snyder. I wish we could just hire GW and get this all over with, but the fact is that we have NO CLUE whats going on behind those closed doors. |

Well put SS... Honestly, the only problem I have with this situation to be completely honest with you is the way the team has handled this from a PR standpoint... I'm sure you heard Bram Weinstein's interview on Riggo's show yesterday and he pretty much said it...the way this has been handled from a PR standpoint is a textbook example of how not to handle these things...now I understand there are certain things that cannot be divulged when dealing with new hires and contract negotiations...but there is not a team in the league that I can honestly think of that has mucked-up things as badly as the 'Skins have with thier secrecy...I mean Christ, you would think they are guarding the secrets to cold fusion or something with the way they have been acting. Then you have Dan Synder's reputation for being meddlesome and generally uncooperative with the rest of the league (perhaps one of the reasons why they are having trouble getting cooperation from other teams in getting coaches) combined with the fact that they have really burned up a ton of goodwill with the fans and other teams by overpaying for coaches and players. This whole thing is turning into a perfect storm of just plain bad press and ill will with the fanbase... |

I actually don't mind the hiring of Zorn as OC. Saunders system sounded great if you had the right personel for it but we obviously don't. I don't want to wait 3+ to find out whether it will work or not.
Something simple will do on offense and let the defense be the complex part our team. |
