Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
I think there are one of two possibilities as to what exactly happened.
1.) Snyder knew if he let Williams go he'd be a hot commodity and probably snatched up by some other team looking for a head coach (Falcons maybe), and most-if not all-of his new contract would still be paid for by the Redskins. So Snyder left him hanging until all other jobs were taken. or 2.) Snyder and Williams have never had a strong relationship, made worse over the past couple of years. Yet Gibbs served as a buffer to the two of them. And once Gibbs left, the two of them (Williams and Snyder) knowing that Gibbs wish apparently was for Williams to assume the reigns tried desperately to make it work. Hence the three or four very lengthy interviews. But ultimately their differences were simply too much.
If you're right, I'm really hoping it was the latter. For it to just be about money would be pretty shitty after what Williams did for the team. But I certainly wouldn't put it past Danny. |

Having a fan favorite coach that the owner doesn't trust and therefore will be meddlesome, or bring in a new hire that the owner trusts and will stay out of the way of the coaching? I wanted to see Gregg Williams as HC and I'm upset with the way our organization handled this situation based on the info I've read, but GW will be given more opportunities elsewhere (Tenn.?/ St. L?) and my loyalties are with the Redskins not a particular player or coach. |

Upon further reflection, I think money isn't/wasn't an issue at all. When has he ever worried about guzzling money away |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Yes, if it Snyder knew he didn't want Williams from the beginning and wanted to save a few bucks, he would have released him earlier when there were more jobs available (and the probability of him getting one would have been greater).

Yeah, he's always kind of had the "money is no object" approach. I wonder if it bothers him that Six Flags is trading at $1.78/share. Eeesh. |

I wonder what the reaction would have been here had this happened last year after Williams' (and the defense's) dismal 2006 season

bye bye...i didnt want him as head coach anyway

....and I wonder what would happen if a solar flare hit the earth and burned all of life on earth. I mean cmon dude the guy is a damn good coach. If fans were pissed after 2006 for him having one bad year compared to his level of work as a coordinator in Tennessee, Buffalo, and Washington then they werent very knowledgeable fans. People love to knock Gregg Williams but at least he coached the team and called plays on defense. Last time I checked Joe Gibbs was a HOF head coach and gave up his playcalling duties after the 2005 season. When that happened I wondered why he was even still coaching because he was basically a figurehead. Yet everyone backed him even me because we knew he was a winner and he does what is best for the team. Thats the reason why Gregg Williams was here for those 4 years because Gibbs knew Gregg Williams is a damn good defensive coordinator. Too bad Dan Snyder dont realize how good of a coach Gregg is. |

Since you weren't here at this time last year and apparently not aware of how many here wanted to get rid of Williams I don't expect you to be able to give any reasoned answer. |

Well since you would not realize maybe im a member of other redskin message boards and not just this one and also know quite a few skins fans here in virginia beach maybe I know about last season in other peoples point of view. I know what some people have said and during a game I was upset at times in 2006 also. That said if anyone wanted Gregg Williams fired they might of not understood what Gregg Williams brought to the Washington Redskins. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Sorry to see Williams go......For Danny's sake I hope he is making the right moves. He may be the most hated man in Washington DC if this all gose south. He may be booed right out of the stadium come this fall!!!!!
|
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Really hate to see Gregg go. I hate to see Saunders go as well. If you think you've seen it all just wait. You'll probably see some of the players rolling out the doors of Redskins Park. We made the playoffs and everyone is gone. When will Cerrato's gravy train run out? Why hasn't it already? I wish the Williams and Saunders families the best and thank all of them for giving it a shot with Gibbs and us Redskins.

Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
For Williams' sake it would have been nice if this had happened sooner so he could have been a candidate for some head coaching jobs (Atlanta, Baltimore).
Blache taking over wouldn't be too surprising, though I think he'd prefer not to stay. Not for any reason other than he's "getting too old for this shit" I think Jerry Gray and Danny Smith are likely to try to follow Williams out the door.
Vinny was actually on Comcast and said that the reason they went ahead and fired him yesterday was because they wanted to give him a chance to catch on someplace. I hate it when people just say to hell with it and tell a big fat lie. Next time just get in you car and drive home, Vinny. |

I saw it too and almost laughed. What a crock. Why not tell the truth, i'd respect that more. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
As I predicted, the 4 interviews for GW were not because they were working out staffing issues but rather because Danny was trying to get past the fact that his gut told him GW was not the right guy for the job.
I guess everyone will have to wait until after the big game to find out who the next HC will be. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
So if this process comes to bringing a better team to the table and the Redskins make the playoffs again and make it even further, how do you ladies like your crow served? Well done, stir fried or al dente?
I think that is a pipe dream.. to think he can blow up this team and then make it into the playoffs again, but hey, I'll eat crow if we do... |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Everyone is bashing Snyder but it was Gibbs who quit on us with one more year on his contract. I think he made the decision because of his family and probably the best decision for him but he did have another year on his deal. Also everyone seems to hate Fossell and says that he is a crappy head coach. Well he has a winning record and williams record is no where close to his as a HC. Instead of bashing Snyder before we know what the results will be lets wait until the team takes the field and we can actually see the results. Lets face it this team has struggled under Gibbs and if it was not for 2 winning streaks this team would have benn a total failure. While I agree that they did have those winning streaks I also think they made this team look better than we really were.
|
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Im not gonna bash snyder yet...hire Fassel and I will be the first to start the bashing. Its ridiculous how all of this has panned out. Im not saying GW is or was the best man for the job i just hate to see all of this so called continuity get tossed out the window like yesterdays trash. And not to mention tossing the 700 page playbook out the window. There is a bit of a learning curve involved with Saunders' offense and I think the redskins braintrust gave up on it too soon. It appears as though the phrase "blow it up" is starting to fit.

Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Holy Crap.....I am out of touch for a couple of days, and Redskin land explodes! The Dan never lets it get to boring

Well I think we know that Gregg is a proven coach and he fixed mainly personal issues that we had and proved that he can adapt! :) |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
this is a stupid move
|
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Williams has an oft times brilliant career as a DC. He has had his trials and lack of success as well. If your going to be honest, and approach it unemotionally, what is his career as a HC? I am not prepared to post any empirical data to substantiate it........but does he have any outstanding success as an HC.
Not that I am aware of. He could be, but not a guarantee. Under those assumptions, I cannot condemn the Dan for his actions to date. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
espn's john clayton said that next monday, fassell will be named head coach!what a shitter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
While it's likely that Clayton is right about Fassel, I don't think it will be as early as Monday. And I think he was just giving his educated opinion.
Either way, Fassel really isn't a bad choice. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Right. I would think we were being total douches as a fan base if we didn't at least give him a chance.
Sure, this isn't his first rodeo, but we've been giving Campbell UNLIMITED slack for a few seasons now. Let's see how this all plays out before we start crucifying people. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
This whole off-season reminds me of watching my 13 year old play his fantasy football league swapping and trading players from week to week so he could maximize his points for upcoming games. As much as people would hate me for it, I think Vinny Cerrato is a managerial cancer and should be excised immediately.

Like I said in another thread: A lot of us pretty much want someone besides fassel, but the bottom line is he will be our next HC. Some of you have mentioned that DS is waiting for the dust to settle from the Williams debacle, I think you guys are correct. If Fassel becomes HC (which I don't want) I will give him 2 years to take us to the SB, if he doesn't then I say NEXT. Snyder doesn't want to bring in an unproven coach with the talent on this team especially being a few players away from the SB. Think about it? Whether you like it or not Fossil will be the next HC. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Fuck that no how bout we give fassel one year.....and give him the axe just like we did marty...Cause you know teams totally can be built in one year especially when its Mr.Snyders money....if it doesn't work totally tear it down and build a new one....
Im sorry you guys think im being a douche but am I the only Skins fan in here sick of this Dan Snyder rebuilding shit!? Come on am I the only guy it angers?...I don't wanna see the spurrier era all over again...and whoever this coach is will find that the fans aren't very forgiving about mistakes...We called for a legend to be crucified over a Time out issue.... |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
I think this is dumb, cuz williams would been a better head Couch for us anyways, then if we get Jim Fessel... we would need 2 built our team, around the new couches we getting over the off-season
|
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
We really do need a good head couch.

I'd like a nice leather one for my game room. |
I'd like a nice leather one for my game room.
But would that be your head couch? I dunno, maybe its just me, but my head couch has to be in the living room where we would get the most use out of it. But definitely agree that it has to be leather. |

True, I would be just getting an assistant head couch. Maybe I'll give it a fancy title to make it feel better. Assistant to the living room head couch - gaming. Something like that. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
You can't have a head couch without going through the process! If we keep on hiring leather head couches then the other fabrics will never have a chance to prove themselves. And might I remind you that 75% of the couches out there are made from the other fabrics.
I mean seriously how is that fairCherylShuman!?! Over 75% of the couches aren't leather but over 90% of the head couches are leather. It just doesn't add up. Then again if it wasn't for the head couch position the leather couches would have nothing to do. |
Re: Gregg Williams Is Gone
Y'all are crazy. Head Couches? Leather head couches? Have you people lost your mind???....clearly with today's spread offenses head couches don't matter if you don't have strong Quality Control Chaise Lounges ;)

Where do La-Z-Boys fit into this equation? Do they even get the courtesy of an interview? |
