I'm gonna vote for Spags here, I see what he's done in Philly and what he did with the Giants d this season and I'll admit I've been impressed. I think a young up and comer is the way to go in this league, I've taken notice of the trend around the league and I think we should go that way too instead of taking some retread from some other team. Schwartz could be a good candidate but I haven't been impressed with his D in Tennessee, I think it's been too inconsistent.
What did Spags do in Philly? He had a good season in NY this year, but IMO his resume is too short too qualify as a HC. This is his first season as a DC. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Spagnuolo... if you don't know why, you need to read this article. If Charlie Casserley and Bobby Beathard BOTH give him a vote, that's enough for me!!! But also... what a cool story about him being an intern for the Skins in the early '80s!
Giants' Spagnuolo is mentioned for opening*-*-*The Washington Times, America's Newspaper |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Spagnuolo is not a bad choice but is his style of defense similar to Blache's or are we going to have problems with styles and controls.

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Time to reason through this list and see who the next Redskins' head coach is.
Assumption #1: The Redskins already know who their Head Coach is. Assumption #2: The Redskins' next HC already knows he has the job. The reasoning for this, is that the coach has to have been a integral part of the naming of the staff. He had to be. Why would the Redskins hand pick a coordinator, and then promote from within on the other coordinator? Why has Gregg Williams withdrawn his name? And finally, what are the Redskins waiting for? First of all, I think we can eliminate Spagnuolo from the discussion. I mean, it's somewhat possible the Redskins could have a wink-nod deal in place for Spagnuolo, but that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Rather, the wait until post-super bowl is the perfect smokescreen for the Redskins to act like the coaching search is still going on. Don't buy it. Snyder already has his guy. It's not Spagnuolo, and it sure as hell ain't Cowher. That leaves Fassel, Meeks, and Schwartz. Meeks is the candidate that received the least amount of hype out of the three, but that doesn't mean he isn't the guy. However, I would gamble that he would be the least likely out of the three. Assuming I read this one correctly, the only logical candidates are Fassel and Schwartz. One of them has the job lined up already, and the other likely doesn't know he doesn't have it yet. There was a reason that Williams announced that he was out of the running over a week before the job will be given, and I believe it's a PR reason. The incoming coach will have far less animosity to deal with from the fans if they have time to digest the fact that Williams is going elsewhere. Look for Williams to sign somewhere as a coordinator before the Super Bowl. That's why the Redskins are waiting on the announcement (and it's probably going to leak at some point prior to the SB, it's hard to keep the wraps on this type of info for long). It's either Fassel or Schwartz. The only evidence we have for one over the other is the internal promotion of a defensive coordinator, and the external courting of the offensive guy. That tells me that the hire is probably a guy who's got his rep on the defensive side of the ball. The final piece of evidence is that Fassel didn't get the job when Danny had the chance to hand it to him. The businessman that he is, he likely saw his window of opportunity to name Fassel HC close. Official Prediction: Jim Schwartz is hired as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins on February 5th, 2008, two days after the super bowl. |

I'd love to see Schwartz here, have wanted him since like December. However, I can see the advantage in Fassel in that he's been there before and he can help guide Zorn on the offensive side while the more experienced Blache handles the defense. Meeks I honestly don't know enough about. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Definitely not Fassel and not Cowher. The others, maybe worth a shot, but options should be kept open.
|
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I agreed with everything you wrote up until the very last part.
I think Jim Fassel will be named if your logic is right. It has been said that the only reason Fassel hadn't been named yet is because of the outpouring of us fans puking and cursing the name Fassel... if letting GW now in order to let people forget about him is true, that sets up Fassel to be HC. Personally, I am pulling for Spags or McDaniels and hope that's what the wait is for. Spagnuolo from what I've read, has a reputation as a great leader who gets guys to respect him, play hard for him, and LIKE him/have fun (that REALLY takes some talent), can get a defense to get some SACKS and was Skins intern (i still say what great "true Redskin" story)! McDaniels is only 31 and you KNOW he had control over that rediculous offense this year (Belichick is a defensive guy)... meaning he could be our OWN Cowher (here for the next 15 years) and between him and Zorn (the QB guru) we would be grooming explosion on offense and stability on defense (with Blache).... The only problem with McDaniels is that he has come out and said that he doesn't think that he is ready to be a HC. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Josh Mcdaniels, a Belichek student who could also show the organization how to manage players without breaking the bank

His name kept being tied to Rex Ryan's, and now Blache has been named the defensive coordinator. It just doesn't make sense. If Fassel was simply the means to get to the end that was Ryan, and we couldn't get Ryan and to Danny, that meant no offer for Fassel, what is different now? No one in the media has any clue what the Redskins are doing here, and that's because they are trying to follow a lead that was never given. There's no reason at all to think that Snyder, as smart as he is, would decide that Spags is his lead candidate simply because he beat the Packers. The Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys, and during that week, the "mystery candidate" was Fassel. Obviously it isn't Spags or McDaniels. Total smokescreen. Plus, why would the Titans want to speak to Gregg Williams? They don't have an opening at defensive coordinator. Except, of course, unless they do. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I personally don't want to see a guy like Schwartz get the job. He's never even been a HC. Let him learn somewhere else. I'd much rather have Fassel than Schwartz. At least he has HC experience and has taken a team to the SB.
|
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
He couldn't talk to Spagnuolo after beating Dallas because the G-women were still playing.
Like I said, the only wait on Fassel has been documented by many reporters who are saying that Snyder has heard about the backlash from fans, then told Fassel to hold for a while, knowing that there are no other HC openings left to worry about him taking. |

I think you're points about the PR aspects of not naming a HC until Williams was gone and hopefully until he had a job makes a lot of sense. If that is how it works out, I'd be happy, though it would really put a crazy cloak-and-dagger ending on this thing. Schwartz, first one interviewed, Fassel brought in to stir outrage, Fassel tossed aside as pawn, Williams let go gets another job, Schwartz enters as hero. It's a little bit too Oliver Stone isn't it? I'd like Schwartz, I think it will be Fassel, but I have no clue what is actually going to happen. |

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I think without a doubt it's going to be Fassel. Remember, above all Snyder is a marketing and PR whiz.. Made his BILLIONS shaping the minds of the public.. Here's how this all points to Fassel..
Fassel was apparently set to get the job earlier this week as a package deal with Zorn and Rex Ryan.. The outcry bellowed from the fans and media alike about how GW was getting passed over for an outsider retread and what about continuity!?!?!?!?!? Ryan's contract status bought Snyder time to re-asses and re-package Fassel by next week.. By the time he is named the following would have occured: -Williams & team split amicably by "mutual" choice and allows him to land on his feet in Jax or Tenn. -A highly regarded defensive assistant (Blache) gets promoted to DC as well as a majority of the defensive coaches remain on the staff ensuring 'continuity' -Snyder gets his man in Zorn to replace Saunders who was going to be fired anyway -(Prediction) This week, at least Bugel & Byner (most of the rest, but not Breaux & Burns) get extensions/guarantees for 2008 ensuring some 'continuity' on offense -Spagnoulo is interviewed a few days after the Super Bowl primarily as a show -Fassel is hired as head coach, the presser with all 3 coaches present trumpets a majority of the staff is returning ensuring 'continuity', Campbell and Zorn already have a personal relationship (from Senior Bowl or combine when JC was drafted) which will be emphasized.. Much of the venom we saw mid week won't be there because the person who had the strongest emotional appeal (GW) is happily elsewhere, people are excited about the offensive possibilities with Zorn (he'll preach an aggressive passing game predicated on a strong running attack) and 'continuity' will be acheived with most of the assistant coaches still in place. No overhaul, no starting from scratch, no rebuilding.. It's really simple if you think about it. |

To be honest I'd be fine with it.. An experienced NFL coach, who coached in the division, 2 time coach of the year, took a team to the Super Bowl, has a career winning record, known for developing QB.. Bellichick was an idiot in Cleveland, Coughlin was a choke artist in Jacksonville.. Neither of them were as accomplished as Fassel (on paper) when they got their second opportunities and neither got a team as talented as the Redskins when they walked in the door.. I honestly think there's going to be a LOT of crow eaten around DC because I believe Fassel will be more successful than we've seen around here is a while. When you think about it, this roster or coaching staff as currently situated is not a fit for a young first time head coach.. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Ok, here's one I made up as a long long shot. Say Snyder and VC go to Arizona to the SB next week, then they can get permission from the Cardinals and interview Grimm while they're in Arizona. Yeah, right!!

fassell. would probably fit best with zorn, has been to a super bowl, knows the nfc east, head coaching experience...cowher just isnt likely for me, plus he likes a 3-4 while blache a 4-3. id rather have our coaching staff be on the same page as far as playing style

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Good post Paintrain. I agree that Fassel is the guy for sure at this point. Why they are waiting to interview Spagnuolo and McDaniels I have no idea. They can't talk to them prior to the SuperBowl, and they are clearly in the process of cementing all the assistants. So why the charade? What's the benefit to Fassel, the current coaches, or the front office? What if Spagnuolo totally blows away Danny/Vinny in his interview but doesn't like the assistants we've JUST hired/extended? This is silly. Just hire Fassel. I have no idea why we're waiting.
And I agree with your points about Fassel, the experience in the division, and Skins fans eating some crow. I just hope Danny/Vinny don't mishandle the upcoming draft and critical personnel decisions... |

He's always had a woody for him also and I'm pretty sure he also like Williams. Kiffin we'll get whacked next week and all hell is going to break loose. Maybe Fassel is waiting for this to occur and use as a negotiating point. |

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
its between spag and schwartz. i dont think we go with fassel now after the reports of him saying he feels betrayed by the redskins. also, if you think about it, greg blache i dont think will get the defense by himself while we hire a offensive minded head coach. i picked spag but also think schwartz could be the guy.

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I think it's pretty interesting, and I could see this happening, that the one and only team that Saunders and Williams have been given specific clearance to talk with is the St. Louis Rams.
Williams was mentioned to be the HC candidate when we hired him as DC and Al would be going back to where he first enjoyed success with Vermeil. I could see Williams taking this gig over Jax because it would represent more of a challenge and an opportunity to "show off" his talent at bringing together and fitting any guys into his system. They could end up in a weird scenario together again.... all St. Louis would need is Gibbs to come back! |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I wonder where Haslett ends up if Williams goes there. Rams have a lot of potential changes pending, since the passing of Georgia Frontiere

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
I don't understand. Continuity is family. Family doesn't change every 2 years. Snyder will never learn. Josh McDaniels should be on this list!!! That's who I want. I really hope I'm wrong but I don't see Jim Zorn as anywhere close to the OC that Saunders is. Blache will be fine. HC? Why isn't Vinny HC? Or Snyder? What difference would it make? Cowher won't be here. I think you might see Meeks. Amazing how Joe Gibbs stepping down let Snyder just go back to his pre-Gibbs antics. I'm truly afraid of the Deion, Bruce Smith, Spurrier days. My prediction is the team is tanked for 2 years and we rebuild again. Really hate to be negative about this new regime, but it reaks of the same old Snyder Redskins pre-Gibbs. Shiny object thing Snyder has. Can someone tell me how Jim Fassel and Jim Zorn are gonna blow up the NFC and take us to the Superbowl? Gotta be kidding me. And I'll be the first to beg for me to be wrong. I just think we're in for a few years of badtimes...
|
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Bill Cowher, hands down. a proven winner, and a higher profile. everyone said no way that Gibbs comes back, and look what happened
|
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
took Cowher 15 years to win a Superbowl. Remember Kordell Stewart? hmmmmm. And don't forget Cowher said he doesn't wanna come back this season.

|
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
You should have had as one of the possible responses:
"Does it really matter at this point?" Zorn will call the offensive plays. Blache will call the defensive plays. And Vinny Cerrato, in close, close consultation with Mr. S. will be in charge of all personnel decisions including who makes the final roster. What difference does it make who the HC is? His only real duty will be to appear on George Micheal's hideous television show. Maybe we could save time and just give the job to Sonny Jurgenson. |
Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
no one that wants to stand up to snyder is going to get hired. i think that's part of the deal, that you let him run around feeling important and making deals that may or may not be good for the team.
i'm mad with how it's gone down, and outside a surprise deal for cowher or fisher, i don't really understand how this whole episode is going to make the team better or provide stability... cause every year we've made a major change in staffing, we've had a terrible record to show for it.
There's no way Cowher or anyone else will come near this job now, save to secure his families future. I suspect that's why Grimm is not in the mix. He knows what the deal is with this job and wants no part of it. Any good will or rehabilitation to Snyder's image that had been generated by the return of Joe Gibbs has been pissed away in days. This "Saturday Morning Massacre" has undone in one fail swoop all the well intentioned efforts of four years. |

Re: So Now Who Do You Want?
Is there any way Daniel Snyder would have the balls to verbally agree to a deal with a coach on the giants or pats before the end of the season?
I do not believe for one second that the redskins head coach did not pick Zorn and Blache as coordinators. |
