Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Mooch looks like the front runner, not just on the wp, but in reality a lot of signs point to him as JLC has noted.
AT this point the biggest surprise would be Meeks IMO. I wouldn't be unhappy w/him or Mooch. Like most, for some reason I don't want Fassel here, but objectively I think he was a decent coach w/the g men & could be here. |
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
My vote goes to Meeks, not because I actually thought Snyder would hire him, but because I feel he has the potential to be a good HC.
Considering the way this coaching staff has been put together, it would be difficult for me accept any concept other than it was Snyder's every intention to hire Jim Fassel from the very beginning. I believe Fassel was on board with Zorn, and Blache after the deal for Ryan fell through. After witnessing the backlash to Fassel from the Redskin nation because of the overwhelming support for Williams, somewhere, it was leaked that Williams had made some derogatory coments about Gibbs, in an atempt to subdue the support for Williams. Snyder then proceeded to expand his search to other prospective candidates while public opinion chilled. I believe it is his intention to use this [so called, expanded search] to interview other candidates so in the end he'll be able to say, we've exhausted our search, interviewed numerous candidates extensively, and have come to the conclusion that Jim Fassel is the best candidate to lead the Redskins into the future. I hope I'm wrong, but I honestly believe that Fassel was Snyder's man all along. I believe this simply because of where Fassel was in the interview process when the remainder of the staff was agreed upon.
You raise some valid points here. It certainly is interesting to take a step back and evaluate this whole process so far. From most accounts it seems that Snyder was very close to hiring Fassel last week, and the extreme backlash may have been a factor in them pulling back and deciding to let things play out further. I'm not so sure I buy that though. I don't think that Mariucci came outta nowhere, I think he was there on the back burner all along. Ultimately I believe it's a 2 man race between Fassel and Mooch. Meeks is the long shot and while Spagnuolo will get an interview my feeling is we'll lean towards an offensive minded HC. |
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
The only ones that fit the current staff that's already in place are Mooch and fossil. I will take Mooch hands down.
|
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
At this point, it really doesn't matter who the head coach is, as long as that person is able to lead the team on the field and assure that both Zorn and Blache get the job done. Both Fassel and Mariucci are capable of leading teams, and it seems as though everyone involved is on board with the coaching staff as is.
While GW would have been nice, I'm looking forward to whomever becomes HC, whether it be a fan favorite (Mooch) or a fan villain (Fassel). |

The danny prefers the O minded coach, he wants his teams to light up the scoreboard & entertain. Marty fired for Spurrier says it all, and it was the O staff that was changed this offseason. I like Mooch & think he might have the hunger to come back & get to the super bowl, but I don't think he's likely to stay long. That & the opportunity to hire a young guy who wants to make a name for himself are the main downsides to him IMO. |
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Mooch is 52, he's got plenty of good years ahead of him.
I think this stuff about hiring a young guy is so played out. I guess it's the new trendy coaching pick these days. |

We may have other candidates we'd like to see in the discussion, [Russ Grimm] for example should have at least gotten an interview. Now, as this process is obviously winding down now, the remaining candidates scheduled for a possible interview are no more than window dressing to complete the process. Spagnuolo is defensive minded, McDaniels is too young in my opinion [I just don't think Snyder would hire him]. It would apear an offensive minded coach is dominating their thought process. |

I think this stuff about hiring a young guy is so played out. I guess it's the new trendy coaching pick these days.
No doubt that he's young enough to coach here for a long time. From what I've read his wife isn't keen on the east coast or at least cold(er) climates. He's from the midwest & spent a lot of time on the west coast. Just from the sound of things in his personal life, I got the impression that he might not want to stay in DC long term. If things go well & he's at home here & successful, that could obviously change. I'm not riding the young coach bandwagon because it's the latest trend in the nfl. Rather, I look back at the hiring of Gibbs e.g. in 81 and wish we could find a guy in that situation, one that will make his name here as a head coach. Whether the coach is young or old I want to see someone that's hungry, which often are younger coaches. I question whether a guy like Cowher would come here solely to win if a lot of $ were thrown at him. While Mooch is not young per se, he does have something to prove. |

The hot rumor a couple of weeks ago was that Mariucci was interested in the Seattle gig. With Holmgren back now and Mora Jr. the supposed successor that's probably out of the picture. |

Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Well my vehement reaction to hearing Fassel was going to get the job a couple weeks back was because I don't like him and I don't think he's a good coach. I just don't think he'd be a good coach in Washington and I remember when he was with the Giants I used to laugh at him and talk about what a horrible coach he was, when he was throwing temper tantrums on the sideline I used to think how lucky the Skins were not to have a coach like that. It basically stems because my earlier impressions of him back in the day weren't that good, and then what he did in Baltimore basically solidified that. Either way I've grown adjusted to the idea of having him as our head coach and if he does become our head coach I will wish him luck because I would certainly want him to succeed.
My thoughts exactly. My impressions of him were not good. I still relate him to the hated Giants too. |
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
I'll go w/ Mariucci. Meeks is not ready per some nfl execs. Spagnuola is impressive from what's out there. Fassel is a mediocre, x giants coach, so no for him.
|
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Coach Rusty.
|
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
I got no problem with Mooch, but I'm throwing my support behind Fassel
|
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
At this point I do not care so long as the new hire wins immediatly. If we lose off of the bat I will always question the hire.
|
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
We need an offensive coach due to Zorn's light experience.
I went with Mooch, only because I am not impressed with Fassel....his teams never really scared me offensively. |

Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Spags will now be the new coach of the washington redskins. he shut down and won against a up to that point a undefeated team. It will be the splash coach hire that Snyder likes.

Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
Mooch is far and away this forum's choice.
I don't think LDS and Vinnie want Spags, Meeks, or Mooch, but I do think they wanted to interview all potential prospects in order to quell the near revolt against Fassel when they almost hired him two weeks ago. The revolt is against the way GWilliams was treated, and a fan reinforcement of the post-HOF Coach Gibbs resignation presser when continuity and family were so highly stressed. Everyone thought it was Greggs job. Fassel may not be our coach of choice, but really, how do you replace a HOF Coach? When you look up the meaning of Smooth, the Redskins FO does not appear in the definition. |

Latest news...
Feb. 5 - 9:45 am et Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is expected to meet with Dan Snyder Tuesday evening regarding the Redskins' head coaching vacancy. Jim Fassel has been the favorite for the job since Gregg Williams' firing, but Spagnuolo's Super Bowl game plan may have vaulted him past the field. That doesn't mean he'll want the job, though. Spags was a coordinator for only one year and may not feel he's ready for a head coaching commitment. Source: Washington Post

Feb. 3 - 11:24 am et Jim Fassel is still the leading candidate to be the Redskins' next head coach, according to the Washington Post. Owner Dan Snyder is said to have met with Steve Mariucci Wednesday, but is still leaning towards tabbing Fassel to succeed Joe Gibbs. Other candidates are Ron Meeks and Steve Spagnuolo, who is expected to be interviewed on Tuesday. Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
I like that Spags is a younger guy and could come in with the same fire that upstart coaches typically have. However, he has no real experience and this troubles me...I don't think with the team that we have currently, we can afford a lot of on-the-job training. Every year wasted is an opportunity missed.

I hear you but think about it: He just game planned his way to the Wildcard and SuperBowl with defense a major factor in winning it all. His mind is fresh and he is a great coach on the rise. You want that risk or: Fassel or Mooch who are stale on the sidelines but have the HC experience. I want the new sucessful upstart with my staff in place, he can only add to our overall team schemes. |

I agree 100%. Of the coaches in the playoffs this year, 6 of them were on at least their 2nd team (including 3 of 4 on championship game weekend) and all of them had significant experience as a coordinator before becoming a head coach.. I don't think a veteran playoff team, one that should have won 11 or more games, one with a coaching staff already 98% complete, is a proper fit for a first time NFL head coach. |

Read this from Post regarding todays interview: Sessions with Snyder often last upward of 12 hours, with some candidates spending the night in his guest house before resuming talks the following morning. While the situation with the Redskins is highly unusual -- Snyder and Cerrato have hired coordinators and extended the contracts of virtually the entire staff before picking a head coach -- it is not entirely unprecedented. In February 2002 the Oakland Raiders agreed to in essence trade head coach Jon Gruden to Tampa Bay, where a staff was largely in place. Gruden won a Super Bowl his first year with the Buccaneers and has the same agent, Bob LaMonte, as Spagnuolo. |
Re: JLC: The HC Horserace
We'll I'd rather see Mariucci, but that is probably because I just plain like him better than Fassel since they both have a very similar record. Spagnuolo is really intriguing, but lets not forget that the Giant's D gave up 95 points in the first two games of the season. Nor should we forget that the Giants have far and away the best pass rushing D-line in football, and that any coach will look good with players making plays like that. Further, Blanche will not likely work well with a strong defensive head coach, especially since DS made so many concessions to him on staff and player acquisition...they can't both be in charge of the defense, and Blanche only agreed to come back and not retire if he was in charge.
Danny has painted himself into this corner...seems like only Mooch or Fassel fit the position we have created, and given that we heard basically NOTHING after the Mooch interview, I am guessing the meeting didn't go that well. I'd put 3:2 that Fassel has the job by tomorrow afternoon. |

I'm not sure how he is a "better" Williams, don't even know what that means (on a side note, suppose we did hire Spagnuolo, you'd think the Giants would be calling Williams right away to be their Defensive Coordinator) And, I'm sure I don't have to tell you that there have been plenty of great defensive coordinators that have not become great coaches. |
