Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
There seems to be this logic floating around of young coach = long term answer.
What is long term in this league anyways? Face it, no matter who takes over he will realistically have about 3 seasons to show that the team is moving forward and making progress. Whoever gets the job has to win regardless of age. |
Spags coached the defense that stopped the most high-powered offense in NFL history - I'd say that looks pretty good on a resume.
While thats true I think what he did over the year with NY D is a better telling story. They were giving up a ton of points in there first two games but made changes and got the ball rolling on D. This tells me he knows how to find answers to problems and get things fixed. |

Not only did they shut down NE but look at the other teams they stifled in the playoffs. Dallas and Green Bay, two of the best offenses in the league this year. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
In the interest of being right, Jim Fassel.
Spags needs to prove he can do his job in the New York Media market for longer than one season. Fassel did it for seven. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
Spags did good things in the league 3 days ago...Fassel has not done anything good in the league in 7 years.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I say let's go with Spags. Young guy, hungry to show what he has as a coach. We're a defensive minded team, so we might as well continue with that. If Spags doesn't work, then Snyder can go after Cowher. If Spags does work out, then he has a coach for the next 10 years (hopefully). Fassel already had his time with the Giants, but that was a long time ago. Also, someone mentioned how Spags would be a Redskins coach, unlike Fassel or even Mooch, coaches from other teams who are now with the Redskins. Mark my words, if DS picks Fassell, and if he doesn't work out, the same people in here that are "ok with Fassell" will be blasting DS for picking him.

Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I'm saying Spagnuolo is going to be the guy, but I think Fassel is the better choice.
Did anyone know that Spags first gig in the NFL was with Washington in 1983 as a player personal intern? Guess he will have come full circle should he get the job. I'm still routing for Fassel, but Spagnuolo is somewhat intriguing. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
Not sure i care anymore. Let's just hire a HC and get started w/ next season. I'm just ready to start being a fan again. I'm not really sure if our HC matters that much seeing we already have all coaches in place. Please hire somebody soon!!
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
Fassel.. Our offense needs more development than our defense and he's got a long history of developing young QB..
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I'm on the Spag wagon. I'm wondering what will be done with the current players we have on deck, but if he gets the job I'm sure he'll do fine by everyone. I'm not sure he's ready, but let's put him to the test.
Whoever we do sign, how long do you think we sign them for? |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
definitely spags i think we need a young HC who will be here for a long time. Only thing i have to say is that when you have strahan umenyiora and tuck on your d line your defense better be pretty good, so i think spag is getting a little too much credit there but i still think he is the best choice
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I dunno. Whatever. Whoever gets us to the Super Bowl. I can't be bothered trying to figure out which one is more qualified. But the West Coast offense is already set so its probably going to be Fassel.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
One thing to consider - I read that Blache was almost ready to retire so maybe getting Spags or Meeks would be the better option if Blache decides to hang it up sooner or later. Anyone know how old Blache is?
I am at the point of just hire a coach soon and hope whomever they hire can have great success. If it is Fassel than I'll support him. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
While I haven't been a fan favorite of second chance coaches, history has proven that second chance coaches can deliver first rate results. Someone once said
"If recycling can save the Earth, then recycling NFL head coaches can save a franchise.
There is no substitute for head coaching experience. The enormity of the job is such that an assistant coach can't possibly fully prepare for it. The ideal head coach candidate not only has NFL head coaching experience, but has at some point in time been successful in the NFL. Sometimes their shortcomings are exposed in the course of losing, but more often than not they emerge better prepared for another opportunity. The team that hires a coach on the rebound is at a better vantage point to identify the coach's weaknesses and structure the organization to minimize them, and the coach has a better idea of where to seek help. Spagnuolo is an assistant, what assistant coaches and cooordinators do is totally different from what a head coaches does. Coordinators call plays, put in game plans and work basically with one side of the ball where a HC has to have knowledge of every aspect of the program including special teams, weight program, media and so forth. Hiring an NFL coordinator with no HC experience at any level involves a lot of projection, and projection can be risky. The idea is to hire a coach who after careful study, you feel gives you the best chance to win. |

Does everyone know that Spags is 48 years old. Not old, but only 2 years younger than Gregg Williams. I didn't know that til i read it today. I thought he was a few years younger than 48. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I am for Spags, lets let a young gun get an oppertunity at this job and stay in town for a while. While many of you might rip me for this next comment, I feel that Spags most recent experience coaching in the NFC BEAST will be priceless in the years to come, and he can allow Zorn to work with #17. Fossil is old and you gotta say that his most recent job in BMORE as O.C was far from amazing, so out with the OLD and in with the New HOT FIRE!

Why are people saying he's young? Damn, he's almost 50. Mangini, the Jets HC? THATS a young guy, he's not even 40 yet. Stop throwing this "He's so young" thing around. Just because your young, doesn't mean your good. And before anyone says, "Oh well, she's probably all over Fassel's junk anyway". I'm not. In fact, I don't want the guy. But at least when you're making your assessment of who you want, don't make the uber weak comment, "He's a young guy." |

What's that saying? The only job more scrutinized in Washington, DC than President of the United States is Head Coach of the Washington Redskins. I'm all for giving coaches opportunities, such as Jim Zorn for QB Coach to Offensive Coordinator, but at the head coach level I'd rather these guys cut their teeth elsewhere (such as, oh I don't know, New York for seven years) before assuming the mantle of Redskins Head Coach. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
My question to all of you is why Spags?Your D was in the top 10 and you must admit the personel is different than the Giants so why bring him here why not a Offensive head coach who can help a team with a young QB?
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
If these are the only options, I gotta go Fassel. The scouting combine is in two weeks. Should we blow up the staff now? Spags would want to have some control over staffing and if his D is to be installed it must be with like minded coaches. Fassel would at least be a verifiable CEO of a veteran coaching staff. I'm not a fan of his, but he would do a good job given the backassward situation that's been created.

You just don't want to lose him to a rival in the same division, can't say I blame you. |

After looking at some numbers, the combined record in 2003 of coaches who previously had been dismissed (Belichick, Dom Capers, Tony Dungy, Dan Reeves, Marty Schottenheimer and Dave Wannstedt) was 58-53-1. Belichick and Shanahan have won Super Bowls after being fired, and Reeves has won an NFL championship. Marv Levy made it to the Hall Of Fame after being canned by the Chiefs. Now, valuing head coaching experience dosen't help minority candidates for coaches because not many of them have it. But the truth is as I've stated before, team owners must be most concerned about giving their teams the best chance to win. Considering all relevant factors, HC experience is of vital importance. |

I think DS and VC sales pitch to all the candidates has been, we want continuity from last years staff/team and in order not to disrupt the team chemistry created we have assembled a staff for you. Are you willing to come here and work with this staff? Do you have a problem with any of the coaches on the staff? If during the season you disagree or have a conflict with a member of the staff we will do the following.... Whoever answers the most "yes master" questions or sell his soul for a load of cash will get the job. Most likely, Fossil. |

LOL! FOSSIL....I like that. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
We all just want a coach even if it is Fassel, which may have been Snyder's plan all along just drag it on they'll take anyone. Fassel would be such a bad hire but consistent with the ownership and front office of this team. I am weary of this team taking steps backwards every few years. Snyder has yet to prove he can successfully run this team. I don't doubt he wants to win--but he makes bad choices and Fassel is right in line with this team;s history under Snyder.

Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
This Redskin team as presently constructed is designed to win, and to win quickly. In the current climate, nearly every NFL team owner feels the same urgency. Honeymoon periods have gone the way of leather helmets. No NFL team that wants to win now can afford to train a HC on the job, because the mistakes he makes could be fatal to the team.
Even College head coaches have less to learn than NFL coordinators with no HC experience. That's why it behooves up-and-coming NFL assistants to pursue college HC jobs, as Nick Saban [despite his embarassment in Miami] and Tyrone Willingham did. Each of them probably has a future as an NFL head coach. Then again, College head coaches don't come NFL ready any more than College QB's do. There still is a period of adjustment. Just ask Our former coach, Steve Spurrier who has admitted to struggling with the transition. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I don't see anything that would make fassel better than spags. Spags will make our defense fantastic.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
If it's down to those two can I suggest simply flipping a coin? If there is more then two can I suggest eeny meeny miney moe so we can get this over with and start placing our bets as to whether we get CJ or not and who we will draft? Of course that would be right after the "why did DS hire him?" thread.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I think we all should know by now. That Snyder is just going to coach the team himself.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
The only way Fassel is selected as head coach is probably because he will be easier to fire next year if Snyder wants to go after Bill Cower.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I get the feeling it will be Spags. Snyder was just waiting for him to be available.
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
If you do a YouTube search of Spagnuolo the first couple of clips have him mic'd up during practices with the Eagles and Giants
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I get the feeling it will be Spags. Snyder was just waiting for him to be available.
The only problem I've really had with Snyder through this whole ordeal is having him not taking responsibility for his actions. For example during his recent interview at the Super Bowl he said "we just want to complete the process" or something like that where I would have respected him a lot more if he had said "I want to take my time and make sure I get this right." I'm tired of him hiding behind set company policy and the word "we", where he should at least act like an owner and lay claim to what he has done both good (bringing back Gibbs) and bad (treating Williams like shit). The one example I'd like to bring up concerning how its done is the owner of the Memphis Grizzlies. In a recent press conference he took full responsiblity for the Pau Gasol trade, and at the same time explained why he did it. Though I don't agreee with the trade I still respect him because the guy fessed up and gave me valid and rational reasons for what he did. Of course this has been said a millon times before. Anyway thanks Smootsmack for pointing out the YouTube videos. Sounds like Spags has got a bit of an accent, though I can't really put my finger on what type. |
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
I hate these polls where it comes down to just two. It seems like it comes every four years or..................... so............................................................................................................................Politics anyone?
|
Re: Spagnuolo or Fassel?
Well he really shouldn't say much because the process is not complete, and secondly if he starts saying "I" then people will just start complaining about how VC is just his lapdog

You could also turn that statement around, and read it from right to left. We already have a defensive coordinator in place. While I understand the intrigue with Spagnuolo, and the SB win being his highlight of the moment, take a minute to look at the team defensive stats from the past season. The Giants, Redskins and Cowboys finished the season ranked 7th, 8th and 9th respectively, and the stats of all three teams are strikingly simular. There's not enough differential in numbers to suggest the Giants defense was that much better than the Redskins. If we were to hire Spagnuolo strictly on his defensive prowess [the exception being the SB] then it's understood why such a strong case was made for the coordinator we already had in place in the name of one Gregg Williams. |
Neither, I want Mooch.
JLC thinks Mooch, Meeks, Fassel, and Spags are all still in the running. Last weeks poll had Mooch in an overwhelming win. |

Because he was on our radar before the big game anyway. Now that he has that fresh ring he commands respect and confidence will be there. He'll take us to the superbowl this year! Mark my words!!!!!! |
