Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

Interestingly, JLC is reporting that Grimm was never contacted for an interview. Now, as much as we have been told that this search is about being thorough, don't you think they'd at least talk to the ex-Hog? And how bad is this search now that it's down to 2 re-treads and Meeks (who is probably the most promising). If Grimm never even gets a call, this has to be the least thorough "thorough" interview process.

SC Skins Fan,
Let this serve as your first official warning! Logic, and reason have no place here. If you would care to re-phrase your post to reflect the necessary level of unfounded panic, mindless chaos, and other.........falling sky, lemming-like behavior, perhaps an acceptable compromise can be obtained.
IF NOT.................it's question 3 for you sir!

Why?

If he wasn't considered to be a candidate why would they talk to him?

So far they've talked with Williams, Schwartz, Spags, Meeks, Mariucci, Carroll, and Fassel (am I missing anyone). So by not interviewing Grimm this wasn't a thorough process??
I guess I wish they would have a better list than what they brought to the table. I would guess there would be some list but there's got to be some "hidden gem" coaching talents out there. Maybe not hidden but some talented young coaching prospects out there to be interviewed. JS&Spags would be in that category. I guess i'm a little dissappointend in our "prospects."

BTW...i'm a vcu alum as well.
I think Snyder got a farily comprehensive list together & was able to interview all interested (& granted permission). He even talked to Carroll. Regardless of whether he would be good in the nfl a 2nd time around, it shows that Snyder is willing to explore all options. Regardless of who he'd like to talk to, only so many coaches are available.

Go Rams!

JLC reports that one of DS planes is headed to Phoenix. Why is JLC toying with the Grimm story, when we know the plane is headed to pick up Fassel for the HC announcement. I'm getting tired of JLC's speculations.

Well aren't they expecting an announcement today?

I know Danny wants Fassel, so perhaps he gave Spags and Mooch really bad offers knowing they would reject. Therefore it looks like those coaches left and gave Danny no option but Fassel, which in turn makes him look better amongst the fans.

Perhaps I mis-spoke. They thoroughly interviewed 2 re-treads, a college coach who would never leave SC for the Skins, 1 promising D-coordinator who never got another call (Schwartz), an in-house D-coordinator, a 1st year D-coordinator hot out of the SB who went back to being a #2 rather than coming here, and Meeks. I guess when I think about a thorough search, I talk to all potential viable candidates (especially those with some kind of connection to the organization). And how can he not even be considered but they seriously think about Mariucci?

Spagnoulo wasn't offered the job, the Giants locked him up before it go that far.

So why stop at Grimm then? I guess they should just interview anyone and everyone with that logic. If interviewing multiple candidates, some up to 12 hours per isn't thorough enough for you I guess there's not much left to say.

I just don't understand those that have a hard-on for Grimm. I can easily see why teams would be intersted in Mooch over him. Mooch has a proven track record in this league, Grimm doesn't have HC experience. What else is there to say?

I'm not sure about the announcement today part. Could very well be?

But I would doubt very seriously that if Dan wanted Spags or Mooch he would low ball them on the contract offer. If Dan wanted either one of them cash would not be the hold up. Nor have I heard from any source that ANYONE has been offered the job at this point.

Can we just stop with the 'retread' talk now?

After all, a retread just won the damn Super Bowl, and he beat another retread no less.

Talk about taking it out of context. Viable candidates are just that, candidates that have a viable shot of being a HC in the NFL. Grimm was up for the Pittsburgh job. You don't have to interview everyone, but how about a slightly better list than the one they came up with. Matty, you can't be that thrilled with this list of candidates, can you?

Well. All this probably means is that Fassel will be the new HC after all. Might as well just lay back, kick up our heels and wait for the announcement. No point in anymore speculation. (Though Meeks is still available...)

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!
Fassel is the only one that makes sense now. Probably the only one that made sense from the time that they installed the staff (the Mariucci connections notwithstanding). I'd say, if you wanted to be fair about the whole thing, a Fassel hiring actually reflects well on Dan Snyder.

Not the 'big splash' pick. Who knows what went down, but I'm going to say that if Snyder had really made the big push for Spagnuolo he probably could have gotten him here. Maybe it will be reported out differently, but as of this moment I'll give Snyder credit for avoiding the erge to jump on the hot assistant (an erge that the fan in me succumbed to) and - assuming that he wasn't just straight up spurred by Spagnuolo - actually shows a level of maturity that I have heretofore not given him credit for having.
It is basically Fassel's staff that is in place, to bring someone else in very well could have proven problematic. Hiring Fassel would also allow them to at least say that hiring the staff was part of a larger plan (to bring in Fassel) rather than just some desire to throw the whole organization into flux for the sake of change. They can at least say that bringing in Spagnuolo was necessary to do their due dilligence, and perhaps to gather some information, but that Fassel was the plan all along barring something really unforseen.
In the end Fassel is the logical choice, given the course of events, and Snyder's ability to navigate the hype surrounding Spagnuolo when so many others couldn't, including myself, is a sign of growth. Barring something out of left field (and your next coach of the Washington Redskins ... Pete Carroll!) I'd say a Fassel hire actually redeems Snyder in my eyes at least. My sense is that the feeling has cooled considerably (another credit to Snyder) surrounding Fassel and that his hire won't cause that public outcry that it would have a couple of weeks ago. That being said, if anyone still feels compelled to give up their season tickets as a result, please let me know :)
I think you're too smart for this site.

Who else is out there?

Sorry but Grimm wouldn't make the list any more legitimate to me. Sure Grimm was up for the Pitt job but he got passed up for a complete unknown.

Fassel or Mooch are solid choices considering what's available. Guys with proven track records, and Fassel has been to a SB.

At least the Bears were interested in Adam Archuleta before we made the savvy move to steal him. NOBODY is interested in Fassil, for any position, and I just have to think that there is a reason. Snyder and Vinny do not know better that the rest of the NFL, they've earned that much. They've painted themselves into a corner, and this is plain to see.

That certainly is a good point.
But to anothers....someone said they'd rather have Williams than Spag any day of the week.

I say, I'd rather have Williams than Fassell most days of the week.

So it aint just bad feelings about how Williams was treated...there is also some logic behind who people think would be a better Redskins coach.

Now if you put Mooch in the equation, it becomes murkier

This is what the AP is saying:
Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins eliminated Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday from their list of candidates to fill their coaching job.

A person familiar with the selection process, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the New York Giants defensive coordinator and the Redskins agreed he is probably a year or two away from being prepared to become a head coach.

Spagnuolo also felt he could play an important role as the Giants try to repeat as Super Bowl champions, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Redskins preferred to keep the details of their search private.

With Spagnuolo off the list, Ron Meeks and Jim Fassel became the favorites to replace Joe Gibbs, who resigned Jan. 8. Steve Mariucci also remained in the running.

Spagnuolo left the Washington area Wednesday night after more than 16 hours of talks over two days at owner Dan Snyder's house. He became a hot coaching commodity during the Giants' championship run, which culminated with their 17-14 Super Bowl upset of the New England Patriots, even though he had been a coordinator for only one season.
Wonder how true that statement is where they reported that "they agree that Spags is still a year or two away from being a head coach.

This much is true, he did not get offered the job. So was his new contract in NY more of a reward than that of a way of keeping him for next year?

Am I the only one who thinks that by being the last team to hire a HC, by dragging on this "process", and by hiring a new OC and DC first totally undermines whoever the head coach will be?

When Gibbs retired I thought to myself ok at least out of all the teams looking for a new HC we looked like the best, but now the Skins FO looks like it doesn't know what the heck it is doing. I never got too hyped about any one candidate because none of them look all that great to me. I just want some decision to be made. The NFL is a 52 week a year gig and bringing in a new HC must take a lot of work, if Snyder doesn't want to write off the season a decision has to be made in the next couple weeks.

Ok so if DS has made his decision(as most of us think he has) what is the hold up now? Is Fassel trying to get a mint out of them? Are they holding back so it doesn't look like they would have gotten Spagnuolo if not for his new contract?

This just doesn't make sense as to why this process is dragging on forever. The other NFL teams found their HC in days not weeks. The only reason to wait thoughout the playoffs was if DS had his eye on a coach from a SB team. Was he just going though the motions?

Contract negotiations. Probably won't take long. My guess is Fassel will be signed sealed and delivered by Monday at the latest.
