Re: Peter King on Zorn Hire

Not to sidetrack things but when has Peter King EVER said that Snyder has made good decisions? As a mtter of fact, I have come to the conclusion that writers think that team owners should never have anything to do with managing the football team. Owners are a bunch of football illiterates that are incapable of making any decision related to football. I'd like to find one example of a writer speaking well about an owner that is involved with the team. Writers tell us that the only good owners are the ones that stand back and watch from afar.

Is it at all possible that an owner, who is involved with football 24-7 for more than 5 years, might have learned enough about the game to be a valuable decision maker in football related processes? I'm not saying "is" I'm saying "could be"!

Off topic, but I was just thinking about the NFLN show "Top 10 Scrambling QB's". Zorn was on the list, 9 or 10 I think, but I think there was like some goofy milk commercial from the late '70s with him and Steve Largent. It had some kind of jingle like "Milk, it makes your bones grow strong" or something like that. Couldn't find it on YouTube. Am I crazy or does someone remember that/have a link?

Found it. If you search "top 10 Jim Zorn" on NFL.com video search it will come up. It has a clip of the commercial at the beginning.

Maybe a year or two off on VC though.
If he let's Vinny hang around calling the shots while the team struggles badly for 3 years, he'll find out what a negative fan reaction looks like. I hope Vinny turns out to be a genius. But, I suspect he's not and would like to see the day when Snyder finally breaks down, gives in and turns over the decision making process to a real life, NFL football person. And I would like to see it in my lifetime or at least my son's lifetime. Getting rid of Vincenzo is an important step in that process. In that sense, I'm glad it's his ass on the line now.

Well what I have suggested (not to Snyder, but to the board here) and what seems to finally be taking shape is that Scott Campbell be given a large role in the day-to-day management of the football team and Cerrato slowly move away from that. I don't think VC will get fired, but what you could see two or three years down the line is him having less influence on football matters and more on overall strategy and business matters. For example, he could work side by side with Snyder and Schar and DC Mayor Adrian Fenty on a new stadium.
I don't care how they arrived at the decision, and in the end it will be wins and losses that either vindicates this decision or proves it to be wrong. Time will tell.
Well, I don't know. If this team takes three more years, and still can't reach the elite level, then we can say that the front office made some mistakes that cost us a shot at being elite, but we can't really project their failures onto Zorn.

Unfortunately for Zorn, he's now a head coach in the NFL and his legacy is going to be seperate from the effect his has on his players. He may win, or he may lose, but that doesn't necessarily reflect on the job he's doing.

Barring some major F-up by the front office, I do think he has a great foundation to work with. It will take some time though, we aren't ready to make the jump to the top of the league just yet.

I think sports writes are like Nostrodamus. Their goal isn't to be right everytime, instead they make many predictions and then when they're right they go back and say "see I told you so." Hell I predicted Devin Hester was going to be a playmaker doesn't mean I can see the future.

I also predicted that Adam Archuleta and Bradon Lloyd would be great players. I thought the Redskins were going to the Super Bowl in 2000. Thought that Maryland would repeat as NCAA champions. Thought the Orioles could make the playoffs back in 2005. Thought that Mario Williams over Reggie Bush was the stupidist move ever. I even thought at one point that Michael Vick could be a good pocket passer.

Nostrodamus was famous for talking non-stop. At one point people started writing everything the guy said so whenever something big happened, people had a huge catalog of vague predictions that they could point out as saying that this event was predicted by nostrodamus. Such is the life of a sportswriter.

Which part? The 87 "ums" he said, or when he referred to our colors as "maroon and black?" To me he seemed nervous, out of place, and he said in his own words that it's a "miracle" to be standing there as our head coach. Knowledge and confidence aren't quite the adjectives I'd use.

Jim Zorn is an up and coming star in the NFL. Fassel's proven twice he's a dead end street and is further proving it today with his bitter reaction to the hiring of someone he himself endorsed. Got to agree with some of the comments above that if Fassel was such a catch, he'd have already been caught by other teamns looking for an OC or HC. No one was talking about him as an option until DS interviewed and now King thinks he's the answer for a team King never has a good thing to say about? Let King and Fassel muck around in their bitterness, but I think the Skins are better off with the rising star of Jim Zorn's optimistic leadership!
If the redskins hired fassel, PK article would be about how the redskins hired the wrong guy and that Zorn is going to be the next superstar coach.

PK points out that Fassel was fired as OC while his team was 4-2. He forgets to mention that the ravens were last in the league in offense that year and the two previous years.
This man couldn't coach an offense to mediocre success and he is supposed to lead this team?

Give me a break, I would rather take a shot at someone with potential than give someone who has proven to be mediocre another shot.
Fassel also wasn't shopping for the groceries in Baltimore. It's not his fault he was given Kyle Boller, Anthony Wright, and a no receivers to work with. He also took a Kerry Collins-led team to the Super Bowl in NY.

I don't dislike Zorn, but I think Fassel would have been the better hire. Remember, regardless of who we hired yesterday we had Zorn in the bag as OC. And OC in itself was a promotion for him. He could have devoted all his efforts to the offense and developing Campbell. Now both Zorn and the Redskins are in unchartered waters big time. I hope for the best and expect the worst.

I ask you, would we be better off with Fassel as HC and Zorn honing the offense and JC's skills, or with no Fassel and a guy who was a position coach 3 weeks ago running the whole show?

Have you ever seen a Gibb's press conference? I love the guy but if you remember his re-introduction Gibbs was Giddy as hell. His voice cracked, he has that crazy laugh, made jokes about himself (one of the most endearing characteristics that is Gibbs). And this is a guy thats won three Super Bowls and led the Redskins through what is known as the Decade of Dominance.

Plus when Zorn was asked football questions he seemed right at home, just like Gibbs who was always prepared and calm when faced with questions about X's and O's.

My point is don't judge this guy by his introductory press conference. The whole media flavor of the week is Synder fucked up (which he kind of did), so to add to that writing about Zorn being nervous and out of place only helps to build on that momentum. Wait till we get on the field, I think a lot of us are going to be pleasantly surprised.

I have to agree with Peter King. Making Zorn the HC may turn out to be a good move, but if we had hired Fassel, we could have had our cake and eaten it to. The only caveat for me would be that I would have wanted Zorn calling the plays with Fassel acting more as a "leader of men."

The answer is we're better off with Zorn as HC. Fassel is proving all over the media today that he's no leader, just an ego. More to the point, it's obvious the FO wanted Zorn as OC to employ a WCO scheme. Fassel is from the Walsh tree, but not a big WCO guy. We didn't need Fassel for the D and he didn't possess the WCO skills needed to integrate the offense, so it's best to go with a guy many around the league viewed as a rising star and not shoulder him with a HC who'd muddy the process. Fassel would have been an excess ego, not a benefit to the team. He wasn't value added in the end, so why pay him when he wasn't going to bring anything to the table?

Head coaching experience? A vast knowledge of the NFC East? Two-time coach of the year? An NFC Championship? I wouldn't exactly say he wasn't bringing anything to the table. Fassel apparently approved of the Zorn hire as OC and thought very highly of him. I don't know precisely how they would have integrated offensive philosophies, but I don't think it would have been a big issue.

Interesting take and I agree with you about everything but Fassels ego. He has been very PC in all his comments, even saying that he would still like to work for THE SNYDER. I think right now he is more interested in keeping his name "out there" should other vacancies (of any kind) pop up.

I wonder if Fassel would be willing to be an "Assistant Head Coach - Quarterbacks" under Zorn or whether that would just be too weird. No one can dispute that Fassel has an excellent record of working with QBs. Zorn really won't have much time to work with Campbell, so we currently need one of two things:

1) A veteran WCO Starting QB (Hell, Mark Brunell)
2) A PROVEN QB coach who can develop Campbell.

Personally, I hope to never see Brunell on the field in anything other than a pre-season game ever again.

I'm not saying Fassel and Zorn wouldn't have gotten along personally, just saying I don't think what he was going to add was worth the $s and more potentially would have hindered the WCO integration. All head coaches got to start sometime.
Ironic that many are saying you have to have been a HC before to lead the football team in Washington, but the next President of the US will never have been a "Head Coach" of anything either before they take over in Washington. Don't want to get overly political here, just happened to see a story on TV before I started typing. Thought it was an interesting perspective though.

I agree. I was one of the ones who REALLY didn't want JF. Mainly because i was that much for GW. I slowly came around and thought it might actually be a good hire. Then Zorn. I have mixed feelings now.

I think much of Redskins nation kind of came around on JF, so I hope DS didn't eliminate JF as a candidate just b/c of the fans.

Re: Peter King on Zorn Hire

Snyder didn't have a choice but to take his time. Carroll told him to take a hike, and Fassel and Mooch were front runners, so not much to pick from. The Zorn pick was gutsy, but probably the only option he had with regard to the huge anti Fassel sentiment in DC. King is one target for once. Fassel went to the SB, was a successful HC in the division, and could have let Zorn develop JC. Now that development might be up in the air. I would hate for us to mess up another young QB's career because of a messed up coaching situation. Spurrier killed Ramsey, etc. Just hope JC heals properly and can learn yet another offense.

i dont think PK was bashing snyder or the skins but making a single common sense matter-of-fact point. Zorn, with all his quarterback coaching skills, will not be able to spend as much time with campbell now that he is the head coach and not the OC. he didnt say fassel would have been a better choice or that zorn was a poor choice.

I remember some of you guys were asking about the reaction Reid got in Philly when he was hired. Anyway here you go....
Although he never has held the title of offensive coordinator, Reid played a major role in designing the Packers' offensive game plans and is considered very knowledgeable about Holmgren's successful offensive system. Reid was on Holmgren's staff in Green Bay for seven years.

While it is rare for a position coach to jump right to a head coaching job, Holmgren's assistants have an impressive track record. Reid would join Rhodes, Gruden and San Francisco's Steve Mariucci as former Holmgren assistants to land head coaching jobs.
"They've all done it, and I haven't done it," Reid said. "Do I think I can do it? Sure. I have a lot of confidence in myself."

A lot of it is not deserved. Plenty is based on media and fans speculating and jumping to conclusions, and making idiotic blanket statements like "No Gregg Williams means there is no continuity at all."

This is not to say Snyder is a saint. But few people ever consider that there are at least two sides to all stories. Snyder made a decision severaly years back to drastically curtail (and eliminate completely during the season) his contact with the media, because of the perception that he was too involved in the team. And now that philosophy has come back to bite him because all that's really portrayed is one side of the story.
it's no secret here that I think Joe Gibbs is one of the best coachs in history and I'm not bashing your new coach Zorn.........loved him as a player but Snyder deserves everything that comes to him and more. He'll change the color of the jersey's just so fans buy more and after what he did to that old Lady who had season tickets and lived across the street, made her walk just as far to catch a shuttle(pay for) to go to the other side of the stadium an walk in.She went to court and they found out he hire rent a cops and dressed them to look like PG county Police. She WON!
I see.

So what about:

Chartering two planes to fly the entire team and their wives/girlfriends to Sean Taylor's funeral

Getting Todd Collins to the birth of his child in December

Sending a plane to the New Orleans/Mississippi area to get Robert Royal's family out of ther during Hurricane Katrina and findhing housing for them

Setting up a foundation-where he matches all donations-to renovate high scool football fields and other high school facilities in Washington, DC

Creating a mentoring program for area students with Redskins players

Financing a community effort to provide food for survivors of the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia

(among other things)

No, none of that should count for anything

Ole Danny Boy is an enigmatic figure, so be it. We're all used to the media disdain for him, which is not just a Skins fans' knee jerk reaction, but a truth IMO & many others.

I agree that he has brought most of it on himself. Like any one w/a public personna & reputation it takes some time for that image to change. I mean can you imagine Paris Hilton as a spokesperson for any humanitarian cause or charity?

Probably not, but in our lifetime (those of you under 70 or so that is), I wouldn't be surprised to see her in such a role. Snyder may one day warm up to the press & vice-versa & his drive to build a billion dollar super bowl winning football team that he was a fan of as a kid may be looked upon as an inspiring American success story. Until then & until he truly changes the Skins long-term, I expect to see more of the same Danny bashing, some of it deserved, but don't put hiring Zorn in that category just yet. he'll be a winner here!
Very true.

But if Zorn works out and we win consistently, the media won't have much of a leg to stand on... until he has to make another coaching decision that is.
Well Zorn has three guaranteed years on his contract so lets hope he stays well after that. Think this guy brings the right energy and positive attitude and not reason why we're not a top playoff team this year. Sounds like they are gearing up for a big draft and free agency period which should be interesting.

I hear Zorn is going to call his own plays which I also really like.
So you don't think Snyder deserves what he gets,I mean after all the work Joe Gibbs did in setting the Skins up to go on without him Snyder just threw it away, like it or not it's a slap at Joe Gibbs.Anything the press has to say about Snyder ........he earned.
What are you talking about? Just not true at all.
.....................word!After the way Snyder treated Fassel.......if you were a coach would you come to DC,not now.
First off, Fassel ISN'T a coach, and hasn't been for a long time. Any other coach out there recognizes that Fassel should be honored to have even been considered. Just being interviewed by ANYONE, let alone the WASHINGTON REDSKINS, for a headcoaching job is the best thing thats happened to Fassels career in two years.

Secondly, Fassel didn't get treated bad by Snyder - he just didn't get the job. so what? if you go out and try to apply for an job, you usually don't get regular updates on your status - heck, it took me 2 months to get the job i currently have and i didn't know what was going on - they were interviewing other candidates and being thorough. Why should Fassel or NFL head coaching candidates deserve minute-by-minute updates on their status?

Should snyder have to call EVERY coaching candidate after EVERY interview to tell them where they rank in his mind at that point in time. "Yeah Jim, this morning you were the top candidate, but i just had a really good interview. You're my second favorite now, but i need to sleep on it. You could be back up to #1 tomorrow - i'll let you know."

The truth is, its BETTER for Snyder to have not talked to Fassel or anyone else to give them updates. Snyder seems to like Fassel as a person alot, and the more contact they had together, the more likely Snyders judgement would have been skewed by the contact. Snyder treated Fassel like all the other candidates - Everyone else just knew better than to be a cry-baby to the media and try to garner sympathy when there is no reason such sympathy should be given.

Any coach who would have a negative opinion of this organization based on how the team treated fassel is another cry-baby we wouldn't want as a coach anyways.

As is your "hatered" for Dan Snyder. You don't know how GW and Gibbs were treated, but I guess it's cool to go ahead and assume.

(yup...I definitely hate the Giants once again)

"The way he treated GW and Joe Gibbs?" what are you referring to? You mean how Gibbs screwed Snyder over and failed to live up to the contract he signed where he agreed to coach the skins for 5 years? And how Snyder did everything he could to try and convince Gibbs to stay... man, Snyder sure screwed Gibbs over there...

And GW... man, poor GW. He was entitled to the HC job. Sure, it wasnt in his contract or anything, but the fans and players wanted him to be HC - he earned it! What was snyder thinking, giving GW four interviews to try and prove he was worthy of the job. If only snyder could trust a guy who showed no respect to HOF coach Joe Gibbs by atleast letting him know about that 10-men on defense play. I mean, sure, GW is going to deceive a HOF coach who won 3 superbowls, but he would NEVER deceive Snyder. And think of all the goodwill GW earned by running lavar arrington - the face of the franchise - out of town because his ego was so big. And insisting on getting Archuletta against vinnys advice - GREAT personnel decision by GW. Letting Ryan Clark go - GREAT personnel decision by GW. Having safeties and corners participate in separate meetings - GREAT coaching move by GW. Yeah, GW really got screwed. After everything he did here and his miserable past HC coaching record, he sure deserved the HC job handed to him on a silver platter.

I don't hate fassel. I have nothing against the man personnally, or as a coach. If he had been named HC, i would have supported him., just as i do zorn. But instead, he has shown exactly why he doesnt deserve to be a HC by his comments to the media. He is a cry-baby with no class. There is a reason he hasnt had a HC job in 3 years and was fired from his last job by his best friend - he's not up to the task.

I beleive he's just mad we didn't get Fassel, because he knows what "easy pickings" we would be with a wimp like that "leading" our team.

You actually stopped hating the Giants at one point? I've hated them more than the Cowboys for YEARS! The hatred is even worse now.
