Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
Never mind going after other free agents, there are several of our own free agents I'd like to re-sign. Actually, just Reche Caldwell. The others I don't think are a huge priority.

Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
honestly I dont really see a "new" approach. All I see is that the Skins are constricted by the cap and some of the big deals they made in the past are gonna start having a bigger impact on the payroll therefore the Skins are conservative because they have to be.
I don't get this hype about a new "style", it seems to be the regular approach constricted.
JLC's latest blog points out that Springs is the only guy to take on Danny & still be on the team. If that's true then it points to at least some sort of change. As I recall from looking at Schneed & C. Canuck's cap sheets, there are a few vet players that could be cut to free cap room. If that's true, then there is at least a change to the extent that danny & vinny are not cutting the vets we have in order to sign new ones. there are a no. of ways to free up cap room, but it looks like they're not utilizing all methods, instead opting to stay put w/the roster for the most part. It's early still. I wonder how much they'll be willing to pay for a guy like hackett or johnson. |

Maybe Danny has learned a thing or two over the years. They could definitely free up more space if needed, so I don't buy this talk that we're not making moves simply because we can't afford to. This is Snyder we're talking about after all. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
While I'm happy that we're not out spending dumb doo doo dollars on everyone out there, I still think we have some legitimate needs (CB, DL, WR) that need to be addressed and we could be missing out. I'm disappointed we weren't in the mix for the DT from Green Bay, Corey Williams or Randall Gay from NE.. I hope we don't hope that we're going to find all of the pieces we need in the draft. Bringing in Hackett or Bryant Johnson is a must IMO since we didn't pick up Ernest Wilford.

I mean, this was all planned out from the beginning back in 2006, (build the team of the future in 06/07, and let it win in 08/09) when we spent so heavily to try to build a winner, but this "patience" is just the next phase of a plan that has been mildly successful to date. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
im against it this year..normally we go off spending too much money on OLDER over the hill players..but this year there was a fresh crop of good talent and i think we're taking a backseat so we won't be the "oh there goes the redskins spending again cliche"..bad move..sign good players and we'll be okay

w/all due respect, it sounds as if your still stuck on the 2000 signings of Deion, Carrier, B. smith, etc. Since then, what "over the hill" players have the Skins signed for big $? We've brought in some old vets at low prices, e.g. Godfrey, Fabini & Wade, but look at all the others we've signed, they're all under 30 & in their prime: Coles, ARE, Loyd (no prime for this guy though, lol), Carter, Washington, Springs, Griffin, even Arch. The only over 30 players we gave considerable $ to since 01 that I can think of are Phillip Daniels & Brunell, both aren't stars but IMO have been good contributors. Of courese more recently Collins, but we know he's got value for us. |

I'm just saying if there was a time to spend its now. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
Michael Turner got:
The deal is worth $34.5 million with approximately $15 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN.com's Michael Smith. He's never had more than 500 yards rushing in one season. Vinny and Co. are looking very good right now. These prices are insane! |

We've got enough cap room to sign quality depth players and a starter or two. But, I don't think they could afford to sign more than 1 big-name free agent unless they backloaded the contract so heavily that they might run into problems retaining that player down the road. |

I certainly agree that some of the moves, particularly Arch & Loyd, have backfired to say the least. We can debate Brunell, but that's already been done too much here. My only point is about the age of players we've acquired, and I stick to what I said; that since the famed 2000 season, we haven't signed many old players to noteworthy contracts, mainly just cheap depth signings. I think this offseason will be a good example of that as well, we may sign some 30-somethings, but it will be for 1-2 years & close to our beloved VET MIN! |

right, so part of the approach is simply waiting for the market to cool & trying to get 2-3 mid level players for reasonable $, rather than 1 big name for big $ or similar. I like it, it shows commitment to the guys here. Hope they continue on this path. |

No doubt about it. Just a very high price tag for a maybe. I"m not sure if he's an everydown, go to back. Atlanta did have Dunn so I guess they view Turner as a younger upgrade who learned from LT. In my opinion, he's not worth it and you can play with LT all you want there is nothing he can teach you to be that good, its natural ability and speed. Atlanta will continue to suck! |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the Redskins' wait and see approach to free agency.
They said they were going to be patient, and so far our big free agent haul consists of re-signing backup QB Todd Collins. In years past we would be sitting here talking about at least 2-3 big signings by now and tens of millions of dollars in new contracts. Are you in favor of this new approach? Or do we wish we were our usual aggressive selves?
I'm VERY in favor of the way we're approaching this off season. I think everyone here knows that signing a bunch of high priced free agents never ever works. Free agency only works when you've already got the pieces in place. You can't build your team buying other teams players. I'm in favor of drafting guys, letting them learn your system and if they deserve to be rewared then re-new their contracts. Just like we did with Cooley. And I'm hoping we'll do the same with our younger guys that are still on their first contracts. |

If you're Atl. you need some high character guys, and some guys that have talent. I like move. The contact is probably 15 mil over three years. That's not bad for a starting RB. Now they'd better go get a QB. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
We may be patient, but teams are passing us by this free agency. There were people out there we could make a play for and didn't. No play on Vilma? Dumb! He is young and talented, just didn't fit in the Jets scheme.

Just like we passed by teams in the past in free agency? A lot of good that did during the season. |

And i don't think spending 25-50% of our available cap space on a position that is not even in the top 3 of our needs is very smart.

They're trying to buy a team and it's not going to work. They still don't have a QB, and they still don't have any WR's. |

He's young and talented but his best position is in the middle in a 4-3. Why sign him when we've already got London Fletcher and a young guy in Blades backing him up? IMO we didn't need Vilma. |

I guess the front office is damned if they do, damned if they don't. When we go out a sign "young talent" ala Lloyd and Archuletta, they're morons. When we sit on the sidelines rather than giving Justin Smith (2 sacks) ridiculous money or trading picks for Jonathan Vilma (43 tackles last year) then they're morons. I am curious what truly worthwhile "young talent" is out there for good value and that would fit a "need" in this roster? Is it Calvin Pace at $22 million guaranteed? Asante Samuel at $9.5 million a year? |

well you can't fault Vilma..he's been hurt most of the last two seasons. Really the Archuletta thing is to each his own.I like adam when he was with the rams and thought he would be the second coming on John Lynch..I would've bit on that one |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
I'd be happy with the following
- FA WR (Johnson or Hackett) - Stud D-Lineman on the first round (Calais Campbell anyone?) - Add depth at CB/OL/DT positions with the lower rounds - Maybe add depth at the above positions with a cheap free agent - and the big one...less conservative offense that allows JC to use our offensive weapons effectively This way, we don't need to overspend in free agency, keep our picks, and maybe insure that in future seasons we don't need to re-structure 50 contracts to get under the cap. After all of us complaining of the crazy-spending approach to the offseason, we should be glad the team is going the conservative route. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
In another bit of free agent news for the Redskins today, wide receiver D.J. Hackett did not accept the team's contract offer and plans to explore his options, a league source said.
"We're interested but it has to make sense for us," said Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations. "That's what we've said all along about the guys we like [in free agency], the money has to make sense, and that hasn't changed." Translation...We don't have any money left!!!! |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
No...translation...we're not giving 40 mil to a guy who can't stay healthy and is a role player at best
|
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
while not exactly a FA signing i think the addition of d. hall is a pretty big off-season move.

I'm not really alluding that we should pay Hackett, but to the "new approach" to FA....translation...we don't have any money. I'll buy the new approach after a few smart offseasons in a row. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
Does anyone think our new approach has anything to do with Gibbs being the team advisor? Snyder may be a bad owner to some people, but one thing he is for sure is a believer in Gibbs. Maybe Joe is whispering in his ear a little this offseason.

That's partially it. But it's also that we've been pretty smart about free agency/trades (active, but making good choices for the most part) the last several years with the exception of 2006. Unfortunately for a lot of people their calendars go 2000, 2006, and now. |
Re: The Redskins' new approach to free agency
2006 wasn't all bad, I mean ARE and Carter are going to justify the money they got to come here. And Todd Collins, to everyones surprise, is no schlub.

Aside from ARE's punt returns, he did pretty good at wide reciever, most people expected like 500 yds out of him, and he ended up getting 700 yards. |

That is why we need to either draft a WR or pick up a FA. ARE is excellent in the slot and on specialty plays. He is an asset to any team and I would not call him any more overpaid than Archuleta, Lloyd, or some of the crazy FA deals that were put together by the Raiders, Jets, and Browns. ARE has shown hard work and stepped up when we needed him. IMO that merits a little overpaying. |
