No they did not get the #3 spot because "they played better than ANY other team in the league coming down the stretch, meaning MORE points", if that is the case than New Jersey should have the #3 spot (NJ - 99points vs. Caps - 94points). No, the caps got the #3 seed because they won a weak division, Mr. Elementary!
How do you know what I know about hockey and what I dont know? Just because I dont follow the NHL through the entire season dose not mean that I dont know anything about hockey. Everything I have said bears some kind of merit please show me where I am wrong... Read your posts they aren't logical as in they make NO SENSE. And the chips down......Explain? How could the chips possibly be down for the CAPS, remember the team that got LUCKY to get in anyway....? We are the #3 seed in the conference playing in the Stanley cup playoffs it couldn't get any better......your confused. The cup is full! Us Cap fans are very happy winning our division! :) Don't be a sour grape Ms. Elementary your pens aren't going to be around long anyway! So enjoy it while you can, it's going to end very soon. LOL |

I know. Obviously not everyone here is a Capitals' fan, and not everyone needs to be. This isn't a Capitals fan site. But I'd say everyone should keep the hockey discussions to those who legitimately want to explain their team's (whether or not it's the Caps) strengths and weaknesses (strength: playing exceptionally well down the stretch, Ovechkin is Jordanesque in the clutch and Huet is allowing less than 2 goals per game since joining the Caps; weakness: not playoff tested, did they use up all their energy just getting to the playoffs),and leave the 8588's out of it. Otherwise, it can uneccesarily ugly. 8588 is a good member of this board, but-and he admits as much-in this case he's being very "Blue Star" and he's doing it on purpose. So if you think you're going to get bothered by him then it's probably best to just ignore him and essentially leave him out of the discussion. I'll tell you this though, 8588 has absolutely succeeded in making me despise the Penguins at least for these playoffs. So kudos to you on that 8588 |

Now, Now....8588, don't get confused or take it the wrong way. I'm just having a little fun on a great hockey thread, ya gotta have passion for your team. On a serious note. Us Cap fans haven't sniffed the playoffs in a handful of years we are stoked about how this team came together in the middle part of the season after a coaching change and in the basement of the Southeast, against all odds we fought our butts off to get in these playoff finals its huge for the Caps and the future of this Caps franchise. And it came down to the very last game and we controlled our own destiny WIN and in or pack it up and we took care of our own business. With that said we are very proud of our position to overcome so many hurdles and just be in the hunt for Lord Stanley. We'll see what happens now that the first step is accomplished? |
Is your keyboard broken? You keep capitalizing "PENS." :)
As it should be when one is talking about "GREATNESS"... But in all seriousness, I will admit that this was/is in all good fun. Not to make anyone or change anything about the PENS but on the real side me being me, I see similarities between the PENS and the CAPS. Last season was the first season in 5 years that the PENS finally got back to the playoffs, not as long as a drought as the CAPS but still none the less a long time. Let alone win there division, which took them 10 years to win another division title. Both have young up coming stars and it is finally nice to be on this side of a team for once where they are actually good and didnt just barely get into the playoffs (not intended about the CAPS, but the Redskins)... |
Re: Official Capitals vs Flyers Playoff Thread
Anyhow, reading what the caps did to get to where they are I can understand the feelings that many cap fans must have. But I knew that if I came on here spouting off about the PENS I would be sure to ruffle feathers, and like I said it was to be in all good fun. I, in no way intended to try to get people to like the PENS. That would be foolish of me to think that I could. That would be like going to a cowboys board and trying to convert them to the Redskins way of the force, its not going to happen. So heres to the PENS dominating the playoffs and to a CAPS early exit...
Since goals win games in hockey, a quick look at goals for and against in the EASTERN CONF.
Goals for: Flyers = 248 Caps = 242 Goals against: Caps = 231 Flyers = 233 +/-: Flyers = +15 Caps = +11 The Caps don't look THAT great now, do they? They were also the only team in their division to make the postseason, so "best of the worst" is fitting. If they were in either of the other Eastern Conf. divisions, they would not have won the division and may not have even made the playoffs. If they were in the Western Conference, they'd not only be out of the playoffs with their record, they'd be one of the worst teams. They DO have the best player in the NHL, but one guy usually doesn't carry a team all the way.
As far as in other divisions, the Caps were 8-8-4 vs the Atlantic and 11-9 vs. the Northeast, and while that's full season, I imagine they had better numbers since Boudreau came aboard. Since January 1, the Caps are +27 (136 For, 109 Against), while the Flyers are +5 (133 For, 128 Against), but who's counting now anyways? But this is the playoffs...throw the regular season out the window, because it's on like Donkey Kong. Should be some great hockey over the next few weeks. |

How about them PENS!?!? Total domination, 1 game down 3 to and then on to round 2. What a beast Gary Roberts is, after playing for 25 plus years the guy is still laying the wood out there on the ice. Flurry, what a performance on his first post-season shut out, hats off to him...

Re: Official Capitals vs Flyers Playoff Thread
Good analysis:
Capitals can go beyond Ovechkin by MIKE CHEN, Special to FOXSports.com Updated: April 11, 2008, 11:36 PM EST Alexander Ovechkin took to the ice for a playoff game for the first time and ended up scoring a game-winner for the Washington Capitals. But it's important to remember that the Caps, as much as they're identified with Ovechkin, are actually a pretty good team. Yes, all eyes are on Ovehkin, but this Washington team is much deeper than a lot of people give them credit for. What surrounds Ovechkin and his setup man Nicklas Backstrom to make these Caps so dangerous? Let's take a look. Mike Green: One year ago, Mike Green was just another run-of-the-mill defensive prospect. With 12 points in his first season on a pretty awful Washington team, no one outside of Green's family probably noticed him. What changed from his meek point total to a jaw-dropping 18 goals? Well, it sure helps that his forward core is much better. However, one of the most telling stats about Green isn't something that's usually noticed. In 2006-07, Green had 68 shots on goal. In 2007-08, Green's shot total almost went up four-fold, finishing the season at 234, putting him among the league leaders. His nose for the net, good defensive sensibility, strong passing, and two goals in Game 1 should make everyone forget about the injured foot that tarnished his rookie campaign. Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Semin: The "other" Alex in Washington was coming off a sophomore season where he put up 38 goals. Unfortunately, the road's not always smooth when it comes to developing NHL careers, and Semin dropped from nearly a point a game to a season .67 points per game. However, something changed in Semin with the arrival of veteran Sergei Fedorov. While Fedorov isn't the same guy who won the Hart Trophy in the '90s, he's still one of the smartest players around and his skating is still top notch. The defensively-conscious Fedorov has offered a calming, experienced presence to the ice, and observers of Washington's second line noticed that a nice chemistry was developing between Semin and Fedorov. The duo started to develop an innate sense of where the other was on the ice. More important, Fedorov has been more than happy to be a mentor to Semin, helping him through a season where things didn't go exactly the way Semin wanted. The result? A fast, effective second line that is ready to surprise any team that focuses solely on stopping Ovechkin. Cristobal Huet and Olaf Kolzig: Take one franchise goalie with Stanley Cup final experience, add in an established #1 goalie, and you get enough depth in net to make any squad feel safe. Kolzig has been relegated to a backup role, but he's said all the right things in the press about being a team player — and at age 38, why not? The Caps know that if they need Kolzig, he's got enough experience and skill to be a steady presence in the crease. As for Huet, his numbers have been outstanding since landing in Washington: a stellar .936 save percentage and a mind-boggling 1.63 goals-against average. Huet's simply been spectacular since arriving in D.C., and one has to wonder how bad the goalie-less L.A. Kings feel about giving up Huet all those years ago. Brooks Laich: Many national readers still may not know who Brooks Laich is. The three-year veteran is a sixth-round checker who just happened to pot 21 goals; Laich is currently the Caps' third-line center and provides coach Bruce Boudreau with a scoring threat at almost all times on the ice. Speed, tenacity, and yes, depth; these Caps may be this year's Cinderella story but they've got the guns to actually do some damage. Expect a physical, nasty battle with Philadelphia starting tonight; just make sure you don't only watch Ovechkin on the ice. |

Yeah I was watching the game last night and it was about as good as it gets. When the Flyers went up 4-2 in the second I was sitting there thinking if we don't do something it's gonna be over, I can't believe how quickly they scored. But the third period was so much better, Mike Green came up huge to tie the game and then Ovie got the game winner. Game 2 is gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

Re: Official Capitals vs Flyers Playoff Thread
What a great game. Caught from about 5 minutes left in the 2nd period on (did see Brashear's goal early on), and Ovie's robbery and goal was awesome. But Greenie was on fire last night.
The big stat of the night to me is the Caps taking 12 shots on goal (scoring 3) vs. the Flyers taking 3. Not only did the Caps offense step up, their defense really put the screws to the Flyers. Should be a great game 2. |
