Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
From a value standpoint, I think we got an A for day 1 and a B- for day 2. I liked how we repeatedly traded down for more picks. I also like that our offense is loaded at the skill positions. But, I am nervous about the lack of depth along the D-line and O-line. I'd give us a B+ for value and a B/B- for filling perceived needs.

Well we supposedly signed four unrestricted free agent OL and two DL. Let's see who they are first. But even still, if we're talking about depth. That's not bad. That's basically how we got Wilson (to some extent), Heyer, and Alexander last year. Not to mention Marshall and Pierce in previous years |
Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
I gave it a C. I just didn't see the need to get 2 wr's at the top. For some reason this FO has a hard on for WR's and I just don't understand why. They show it time and time again. First getting Lloyd and ARE at the same time and now this. Why couldn't we have drafted Merling, Kelly or Thomas and Davis?? That way you take care of a HUGE need a DE plus you add a young wr. I didn't have a problem with Davis cause he could be a factor in the red zone. I like the 3rd round pick getting a guard cause we needed a young guy in the mix.

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
Value Grade: A+ (possibly the highest value of all 32 teams)
Needs Grade: B- (at this point we have the exact same d-line as 07, with one high potential addition on the o-line) Overall: A-/B+ depending on what happens this season. If some combination of injuries occur between Kendell, RT, and JJ a lot of fans and analysts will be saying "how in the hell could Washington not address the line w/ all of FA and draft to work with." If the line stays healthy and our offense explodes like it should now the FO will be hailed as geniuses. |

WOW!!!
No wonder the redskins never draft: we suck at it. I'll admit Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were decent picks but what the heck do we need Fred Davis for we have Cooley and Yoder (who makes some pretty good catches in the clutch). We should have pick a D-lineman instead of Davis (Groves, Campbell, Thomas, Jones and Ellis were still availible). We had depth issues at linebacker that were not addressed. We could have gotten Marcus Howard, who is versitile enough to play linebacker and defensive end (almost an exact clone of Marcus Washington) but instead we trade away our fifth round pick and Indy snags him. Why would we go with Chad Rinehart of N. Iowa when Mike McGlynn was still availible. McGlynn brings more experience from playing better opponents in the Big East than Rinehart who played in some community college division at Northern Iowa. We wasted a pick on a punter when Derrick Frost did a tremendous job this season. I agree with the selection of Colt Brennan. We definately could use a young backup quarterback (especially one like Brennan who, unlike Campbell doesn't throw late game interceptions that causes us to lose). Overall the draft was very pathetic and disappointing and I rate it as a D only because of the selections of Thomas, Kelly and Brennan. |

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
Joe Bugel will turn Rinehart into a pro-bowler. At least, that's what I'm hoping. I was a little perplexed by the first three picks, but I think they addressed our biggest problem with Thomas, Davis, and Kelley : red zone scoring. A day later, I love those first three picks. The more weapons, the better.
A lot of people wanted to draft o-line and d-line, which is understandable, but I think the d-line was great against the run last year and the o-line was decent and can only be better with the return of Jansen and Thomas. I really like the punter. The most underrated player on the Giants Super Bowl team was Jeff Feagles. He always seems to give the opposing team bad field position. My only gripe is the selection of Colt Brennan. He seems to have been selected on name alone, kind of like Jordan Palmer. Overall though, I give it a B+. |

If we go by his last performace against Georgia, and the past history of Qb's that play for June Jones, and his performance at the Senior Bowl, then Brennan isn't going to make it past OTA's. |

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
C-
There were a bunch of good things that happened to us on draft day. For one, we fixed a Tight End gap that was quietly a huge hole with the Fred Davis pick. Chad Rinehart and Justin Tryon filled some pretty critical needs for us and could end up being steals. Colt Brennan could one day be traded for a first round draft pick if he impresses the league in limited playing time. This team has a problem with taking players who we will never be able to feature. Last year we took Landry with the 6 overall pick. Excellent value, but again, we had Sean Taylor. That situation solved itself in the worst way possible, but that doesn't mean the pick was a great fit or anything. Same thing with the overkill in the 2nd round. There's only one football. You can't feature more than two players in the offense. There just isn't enough footballs to go around. I understand that Fred Davis isn't going to be the featured TE. But who will be our featured wide receiver? It can't be both Thomas and Kelly. Teams that feature two wide receivers can't afford to throw the ball to the tight end, unless of course the quarterback is Manning or Brady. The cold reality is one player is going to beat the other out, and the more inferior of the two receivers isn't going to play a big role for us. Maybe if they start playing the game with two footballs, or we sign Peyton Manning, but otherwise not. Top to Bottom, we did alright, deserving of a C. We did alright, but we should have done better, especially after the tone setting trade. Trevor Laws, Calais Campbell, and Malcolm Kelly could have all been Redskins if we had done it the optimal way, but we got played by the Eagles and Cardinals respectively, and we lost out. The only inexcusable part is that we used too many picks at the same position. You generally want to figure out what type of offense you want to be before the draft, and we did not do that. I am glad that we didn't start trying to load up on defensive linemen on the 2nd day. I thought we had a strong, efficient, second day, and potentially pulled out two future starters. |
Trevor Laws got picked right before our second round choice, and so did Calais Campbell.
Ah, but Trevor Laws did not get picked before our first choice, and Campbell did not before our second.
Merling was gone, and that was fine, but we did drop the ball ball to an extent in predicting who would take what player. |
Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
I think if we were to rate the entire process, which would be inclusive of the draft day haul, as well as what we didn't do with the pick (trade for CJ), I'd bump it up to a B- or C+.
If instead of picking Devin Thomas, we selected Trevor Laws, this would be a pretty impressive haul. Laws, Kelly, Davis, Rinehart, Tryon...etc. That would help both sides of the ball immensely. Instead, we helped one side of the ball immensely, and on the other side, we are just a year older. Thusly, we did alright, but we should have done better. |

This is off topic but I'm very very impressed with what Miami is doing.

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
I hope I'm wrong but I get the feeling the defense could slip back to 06 form.
We are too deep in the secondary for it to be that bad, however, the run defense should be the worst it has been in awhile this year. Sean Taylor was awful in 2006, and I personally expect Landry to improve over his impressive rookie season. Remember, we were historically bad in 2006
Although, as every year, Griffin is a wild card. If he's healthy, he's still dominant. The front office just likes to bank on him being healthy every year, which last happened back in 2005. It seems likely that we won't be as good as last year on defense or overall. That's not really a draft problem though, we just happen to be the oldest team in the league. |

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
At least we have youth at receiver. But for those of you who don't think Santana Moss is good enough to be a number one, I doubt these draft picks will satisfy you. Devin Thomas' upside looks something like Eddie Kennison's career, and Malcolm Kelly's upside looks something like Keyshawn Johnson. Both of those guys were starters in this league for a long time, but that's a best case scenario. Additionally, some people on the WP would argue that neither of those guys was ever a number one receiver.
If he can rebound, I think Santana's job is safe. |

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
Had we selected DE Calais Campbell instead of TE Fred Davis in the 2nd round, then this would be a solid A in my book. I haven't seen anyone else who had Fred Davis rated as a first round talent, yet we graded him that high. If Calais drops 10-15 lbs and develops into the dominant DE that he projected two years ago, we'll regret following our draft board to the T when it came to selecting Davis.

Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
B. A on value, but i don't think any of the players (beyond the punter) are anything special, and we didn't get a DE either.
i do think 7 of these players can make the roster pretty easily though, so that's a good sign. we only got receiving, a punter, and db depth though out of 10 picks. still, giguere, henderson, hardie, haynos, and highsmith could really help us out as UDFAs. our LB depth could be fixed solely by 8th rounders ;) and hardie could easily get a backup DE spot on this roster. |

i too, would have liked campbell (btw, if he wasn't drafted, he'd be heading to iraq right now (army)), but he won't lose 10 lbs and turn into a sack machine. he's the slow run stopping type (like wynn or daniels). run stoppers just don't get labelled dominant. merling is the same type, just a bit better/faster. oh yeah, it's pretty funny GB had another top 15 QB drop into their laps... why do they have it so easy up there... favre, hasslebeck, brunell (when he didn't suck), bart starr, i mean... damn. I'm OK with drafting Davis if they think he's going to be a good player. From what I saw he sure looked good at USC. But let's be real. First, this guy is not going to be an everydown player for us. With that pick we could've perhaps got a DE to walk in and start right away. And two we've already got pro bowl TE. So that limits Davis' playing time. I like the player but I just don't see him being a need for us. Makes no sense. |

You're right. I suppose we had more needs, if nothing else for depth, than we did picks. Oh well, that puts us in company w/ just about every other team in the league. |
Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
Overall, I give it a B-, I'll break my thoughts down by pick and wrap up with an overall:
Devin Thomas: 2nd Round Steal very good pick Fred Davis: WTF...lol in all honesty though I've started to warm up to him a little bit, my understanding is he was a guy a lot of people thought would go in the first round, and from what I've heard Zorn seems to think that Davis and Cooley can exist in the same formation. Malcom Kelly: I hear he's another steal, everyone says that the skins may have gotten the two best Receivers in the draft in him and Thomas, and lets be honest, outside of Moss and ARE we aren't exactly deep at the Wideout position right now. Chad Rinehart: Finally a Lineman, and from what I hear a versatile one that can move between the Tackle and Guard positions fairly easily. Justin "J.T." Tryon: Hope he's got speed, because he's very short 5'9", but we need CB's and someone thought he was the best one there at the time so who knows. Durant Brooks: Finally someone who might be able to actually punt. Kareem Moore: Another smaller dude at 5'11" but we need DB's and he was there. Colt Brennan: Another possible steal, if nothing else, hopefully that solves the problem of a third stringer... Rob Jackson: Possibly another Chris Wilson type DE? Chris Horton: Just adding depth at DB Overall I would like to have seen more Linemen on both sides of the ball, still not entirely sold on the Davis pick, but maybe that's the big reason I'm on here running my mouth while Cerrato is up there putting together a team. In any event, Zorn says he can make it work, so who knows. Hopefully we can find something after the June 1st cut down, but I have always been a little leery of taking one man's trash and trying to make it our treasure. |

It sounds like we drafted based on the "best player available" philosophy. I think most GMs would agree that, in the long run, that's the best way to build a top notch franchise. Thomas, Kelly, Davis, and Brennan all appear to have been great values. I too wish we had drafted more linemen, but it's hard to take serious issue with the bpa philosophy. |
Re: Overall Draft Grade for the Redskins
I like the receivers we took, but we wasted a high pick on fred davis, TE wasnt a need, TE is more of a luxury pick. With that said I like the guy but we should have adressed DE and safety

It would have been nice had we landed Campbell, but I think it's telling that our D-line coach is the former Miami D-line coach and we didn't draft Campbell despite having 3 2nd rounders. Aside from Campbell, there weren't any decent DEs worthy of our 2nd rounders (Groves is probably an OLB). Moreover we did draft a DE. Similarly, there weren't any standouts at the safety position. Kenny Phillips was gone at 34 and this year's safety crop was otherwise pretty piss poor. Besides we did draft two safeties with late round picks. |

On the other hand if the offense does not improve much there will be a lot of criticism, w/ or w/o significant injuries to the o line. But here's what I've been wondering since yesterday... what does this strategy say about JC and specifically what Zorn and Co see in him? I wonder if adding so much potential firepower on offense means they think JC is ready to break out and dominate. If they did not believe in him might have they instead spread the picks out among our needs: d line, o line (maybe G and OT), CB and LB? It's just conjecture on my part but I'd like to think this peculiarity of picks says something about JC's progress and the kind of season Zorn and Co anticipates from him. |
