Jets ink rushing leader Woodhead to free-agent deal

Chadron State running back Danny Woodhead, the NCAA's career rushing leader, signed a free-agent deal with the New York Jets on Sunday night, according to the player and his agent.

Agent Chris Gittings said he and Woodhead thought the Jets were a good fit after teams passed on the 5-foot-7½ running back during the draft, mostly because of his size. Woodhead ran for 7,962 yards in four seasons for the Division II school in western Nebraska.

Terms of the deal for the two-time Harlon Hill Trophy winner were not immediately disclosed, and the Jets would not confirm the signing.

"I'm more than happy with what I got," Woodhead said.

My thread title is kind of inaccurate I think. Often times, these guys are invited to multiple camps to try out before actually being signed. That's probably what's happened with Henderson and the Vikings and Pats. So Vikings and Pats could both be right (or wrong).

Not to bring it up again sorry. I did date someone younger and got caught. Thankfully the parent didn't hang me by my balls. Also times have changed and the law is different. No different then when we were young if caught with marijuana the police made you throw it out or wrote you a ticket and you paid a fine. Now you end up paying for an attorney, court cost, fine, drug court etc...

I started out with a simple joke about how people are holding CJ to a high standard but not other players. I was poking fun at some of the No to CJ fans. Did not mean to interupt a good thread. I don't always agree with the law but we all have to obey them. I don't agree with racism either. I'm sure the town has it's issues. I don't doubt the father is a racist. but if we were going to hold CJ to a huge standard due to his punching of a coach allegedly...then we should hold all the players (as fans) to the same standard. I personally don't care what the players do in their off time. I don't condemn Dallas for trying to get good talent. I think the whole witch hunt as someone mentioned is exactly that a witch hunt. The NFL should not be moral police. I can see drugs being an issue and steroids and major felonious crimes but they have gone over board with the morality issue. Same with some people on this board. Apologies for testing some peoples nerves. LOL. Hope all loved the draft.

Yesterday on NFLN Charley Casserly was saying that sometimes you have a deal in place with an UDFA then before you get all the paperwork in place and official some other team comes in and your guy signs somewhere else. I think the announcements are held off until everything is official because even though you think you have a deal in place sometimes they fall apart at the last second.

They usually do post it but not until they have all the name or invites. Someone else posted the numbers of UFA's we were to invite........was that the only numbers to be invited or the only numbers as of that time? I would hope more DE/DL and a few LB, CB's would be brought in. I also don't see why we can't invite some more WR even if they are camp fodder. We might find some one to develope.

I'm not so sure about this. KFFL cites NFLdraftbible.com as their source on this, yet NFLdraftbible.com has Gilberry as having signed with the Giants. Draftdaddy.com also has Gilberry signed with the Giants. I'd like for KFFL to be right, because he had 10 sacks for Alabama last year, but it looks to me like it is more likely that KFFL made a typo and he signed with the Giants.

All sites I've seen seem to agree that OLs Kerry Brown, Shannon Boatman, and Devin Clark have signed with the Redskins, as well as S Kevin Mitchell and WR Horace Grant. Draftdaddy also lists Arkansas CB Matterral Richardson, Iowa State QB Bret Meyer, Oregon State C Kyle Devan, and Oregon State DE Dorian Smith as Redskin UDFA signees. NFLdraftbible also lists OT Darren Marquez, Southern Illinois as having signed with the Skins.

I think several teams talk to these players and sometimes information about the talks leak out prematurely, so nothing is for certain until the Redskins officially announce the signings. Kind of like the Brian Roberts trade rumors, but fortunately we will know much faster than we did in that fiasco. LOL.

OFA's are nice and we can all develop man-crushes on whomever we please, but lets be realistic - if even one of these guys makes the final roster that has to be considered a huge boon. Not every undrafted player is a diamond in the rough - the vast (like 95% vast) majority are simply "rough".

Heyer and Alexander were great finds. But let's not go counting on building the team through these guys. They are mostly camp fodder and special teamers who hopefully need not step in this year.

Dont sleep on this guy .....Good Free agent DE pickup

DE Dorian Smith | Senior

Despite having just nine career starts under his belt, Smith has been a force in his two years in Corvallis.

Last year, in primarily a backup role, he racked up a team high nine sacks while this year he has six sacks, good for third on team. He has 26 tackles on the year, including nine for loss, tied for fourth most on the squad.

He is the first OSU defensive end to be named to the first team since Bill Swancutt in 2004.

Redskins to Sign 13 Undrafted Rookies
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
April 28, 2008

The Redskins have agreed to contract terms with 13 undrafted rookie free agents, the team announced on Monday.
The group of Redskins prospects includes four offensive linemen, two defensive ends and a quarterback. They join 10 rookies the team drafted in the NFL Draft on Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the complete list:

REDSKINS 2008 UNDRAFTED ROOKIES
Player Position College

Shannon Boatman OL Florida State

Kerry Brown OL Appalachian State

Devin Clark OL New Mexico

Kyle DeVan OL Oregon State

Alonzo Dotson DE Oklahoma

Horace Gant WR St. Olaf College

Curtis Gatewood LB Vanderbilt
Bret Meyer QB Iowa State

Kevin Mitchell S Illinois

Matteral Richardson CB Arkansas

Justin Scott S Purdue

Dorian Smith DE Oregon State

Bryan Wilson LB Morgan State

Shannon Boatman is a 6-5, 315-pound offensive right tackle. He also played some guard for Florida State, so he has some versatility. He started two years and is thought to be a good developmental prospect. Boatman was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 17, but he has been able to keep the disease in check.

Offensive lineman Kerry Brown is a 6-5, 305-pound guard from Appalachian State. He started four years and was a Division I-AA All-American. He is regarded as a tough, physical lineman who needs to fine-tune his technique.

Devin Clark is a 6-3, 305-pound offensive right tackle from New Mexico. He is expected to move inside to guard at the pro level, though. He participated in national Olympic-style weightlifting competitions, so he is a strong, stout player. He may have been bypassed in the draft due to recent ankle surgery.

Kyle DeVan played mostly center at Oregon State. He was a three-year starter and registered 232 knock-down blocks overall. He stands at 6-2 and 300 pounds.

Defensive end Alonzo Dotson is 6-4 and 260 pounds. He played in 14 games with Redskins second round draft pick Malcolm Kelly last year and recorded 20 tackles and two sacks. His father Santana played for the Green Bay Packers in the 1990s and his grandfather Alphonse played for John Madden's Oakland Raiders in the 1970s.

Horace Gant is a 6-3, 218-pound wide receiver who holds St. Olaf school records for receptions with 185, receiving yards with 3,061 and touchdowns with 27. Gant was coached by new Redskins offensive assistant Chris Meidt, who held the head coaching position at St. Olaf last year.

Curtis Gatewood is a 6-2, 248-pound outside linebacker who will likely play either the strong-side or defensive end in the pros. A four-year starter at Vanderbilt, he recorded 110 tackles, 10.5 sacks and one interception in his college career.

Quarterback Bret Meyer joins the Redskins as one of five QBs on the off-season roster. He is expected to compete with rookie draft pick Colt Brennan and first-year player Sam Hollenbach for a backup job. He completed 233-of-382 passes for nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions as a senior at Iowa State.

Safety Kevin Mitchell is a 6-0, 209-pounder who led the Big Ten in passes defended last year. He was tied for third in the Big Ten with five interceptions. He also logged 75 tackles and 11 pass deflections. Mitchell is not related to the late Redskins linebacker Kevin Mitchell.

Matteral Richardson is 5-11, 194 pounds and regarded as physical cornerback and sound tackler. He started three years at Arkansas, finishing with 180 tackles, 27 pass break-ups and four interceptions. Nicknamed "Red," he should compete for a special teams job early on.

Safety Justin Scott was a two-year starter at Purdue. Last year, the 6-0, 209-pounder recorded 73 tackles, one sack and three interceptions.

Defensive end Dorian Smith played two years at Oregon State as a junior college transfer, but started just one season. The 6-1, 264-pounder recorded 72 tackles, 22 tackles for a loss and 15 sacks.

Bryan Wilson is a 6-3, 250-pound outside linebacker who earned 2007 All-MEAC first-team defense honors. He logged 50 tackles, a team-high seven sacks and a league-high six forced fumbles. Wilson hails from Temple Hills, Md. He attended the Redskins' local college workout.
