re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
well, I dont know exactly what we're going to do about this, but I do no that whatever we do, we are going to severely overpay for it. Jason Taylor or otherwise. Demetric Evans starting would be a huge joke, and james coming off a 2nd torn ACL would be completely ineffective untill at least the end of the season when it is too late. We need somebody else. At least this happened sooner rather than later. :-(

re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I hope we don't trade our pick for Taylor, even if it's 2nd or 3rd rd.. It is not worthing trading away for a guy who wants to play only one more year..

re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I'm not surprised Daneils went down. He was injury plauged way before this year and he was playing on borrowed time.
I don't see what is so wrong with keeping the DE's we have. I know they suck but what was the expectation when we relied on Daniels to start and didn't draft/acquire any DE's this offseason. We've stood pat on our DE's this offseason when it has been more than obvious the past 3 years we've needed to supplement our pass rush. I'm not distraught because of Daniels because honestly I'm not surprised he should have retired last year. I'm distraught because the panic button is going to be pressed and we're going to start losing high draft picks. |
a #1 would be too much, unless Taylor agrees to play at least 3 more years, imo.
Before we mortgage the farm for Taylor, Taylor has played the Rush DE postion his whole career. While he is a monster over there, making the transition to strong side will not be easy. While in Madden it might look great to have Carter at one DE and Taylor at the other, this may not translate well in reality. I don't know at this point in Taylor's career if he will hold up against the pounding he'll take over there (or if he'd be willing to), especially in the NFC East. If we have to give up more than a 3rd, I say no deal. McFarland is still a FA, but he's a DT and the Steelers withdrew an offer for him in March due to a failed physical. |
re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Everything I had read about Daniels going into this season was that he was in the best shape of his life, ready to give it another go. This is a terrible omen. Luckily, I don't believe in omens however.

re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Just heard John Clayton on ESPN. He said talks are underway and we are moving quickly to get Taylor; said he would be surprised if it didn't happen.
It's really a no brainer for both sides. Perhaps a number 2 for JT. |

Yep and I'm sure that's part of the reason they want to get something done quickly. |

Ok now reports are saying Buzbee was carted off with an injury, WTF?

Clayton had some very good things to say about the Redskins. He said this is a good Redskins team that made the playoffs and they feel they aren't that far away. Good young quarterback, good draft, etc.
I like this move guys. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Why would we get a good price on Taylor when we are in clear and obvious need for a veteran DE???
I expect to be gouged in under these circumstances where we have no servicable back ups. The Dolphins aren't being played by your nine year old brother in your Madden dynasty season. We going to be pulling out number 1's and some when it comes to trading for Taylor. That is why this situation is going to suck Dolphin Balls! |

Remember Taylor doesn't want to be there either. So it's a win-win for both teams. I doubt the Fins will force our hand on this one. We can easily walk away and leave them Taylor and no pick at all. I think the Dolphins are very eager to get something reasonable done. |

what about that Wilson kid ? i seem to remember him doing good things last season when he was given the chance to play.

He's too green and too light to play DE full time. |

He played in the CFL for a while, I'm pretty sure last year was his first year in the NFL. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Wilson can rush the passer, but he's not ready to be a three down defensive end yet. He needs to work on stopping the run better.
As for Taylor, I really don't want to see us trade a first round pick for him. I'd be fine with a third rounder but at this age in his career he's not gonna be a valuable long term player for us. And he needs to rework his cap deal as well. But at least he'll be an adequate replacement for Daniels. |

Oh, and this guy wants a Super Bowl ring bad too. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
how about a rotation between wilson and evans ? i don't mind the skins getting taylor, i just don't want them to give too much up to get him. is a rotation between those two guys really that much of a drop off from daniels ? daniels definately had the experience but his skill level was not that impressive, imo.

Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Smoot also was hurt. Lets trade for Jason Taylor, with us being in need I think if we can get away with just one 1st its a coup for our front office.
|
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Wow. Hope Smoot is ok. But 2 DEs out for the year on the FIRST DAY? Oy.
From JLac: Buzbee Out for Season; Smoot Hurt Jason La Canfora calls this in from the field: Alex Buzbee, who was hurt 30 minutes into the afternoon practice, has a ruptured right Achilles' tendon and will miss the season, obviously. He will have surgery tomorrow. Starting corner Fred Smoot was receiving medical attention after being hurt in an 11-on-11 drill in the 3 p.m. practice. He was hurt on the far side of the field and the nature of his injury wasn't readily apparent. He was quickly surrounded by teammates and medical personnel; he was walking gingerly while being supervised by the medical staff. The injury appeared to be to his left ankle or foot and his left shoe was off. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Wow 2 DEs are down, the #2 CB is hurt, and Rogers is recovering from an ACL injury. Well, it looks like everything is normal around Redskins Park.
I'd be fine with trading a 3rd rounder for Taylor and would feel slightly uncomfortable with trading a 2nd rounder. I would be absolutely opposed to any deal which offers Miami a 1st rounder, whether straight-up or based upon certain conditions being met (unless we give up a first in the event the Redskins win the Super Bowl). |
I'm fine with a 2nd rounder.
Hopefully we can re-work his deal to make it a bit more cap friendly.
I'm not fine with a second rounder. That's your most valuable (cap-friendly) pick in the entire draft. I can see the need for Jason Taylor here, but just because Daniels is out doesn't mean it makes anymore sense than it did yesterday. Taylor is an upgrade on Daniels obviously, but where are we going to be when we are ready to compete in a year or two: with Jason Taylor's contract, probably significantly less production, and without the player we would have gotten with that pick. No one is giving more than a 4th for Taylor, so match the best offer they have, and if they want more, tell them we're interested in other options. It's a buyer market, so the overcompensation angle is pretty "throwback" of us, and I don't mean that in a good way. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I don't really mind the compensation, my concern is more how long will Taylor be playing for us. If he's really only going to play one more year, then its not really worth trading a pick for the guy. I'd much rather go with what we have on hand and scour the waiver wire as opposed to trading any draft pick for one or two years of Jason Taylor. Just glancing at our roster we need to hold on to draft picks and build for the future, Taylor would be nice but mortgaging the future for the now is just not sound to me.

Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
More from JLac (hope Smoot is back soon!):
Cerrato on J. Taylor; Injury Updates Jason La Canfora calls in trade and injury updates from the field: Vinny Cerrato was asked about defensive end trade talk -- concerning the Miami Dolphins' Jason Taylor or other -- and said: "We haven't talked to anyone yet on anything." Now, as for the injuries that predicated this talk, Phillip Daniels, who was hurt in the morning practice, will undergo surgery to repair his torn left anterior cruciate ligament Friday. Alex Buzbee, who was hurt 30 minutes into the afternoon practice, has a ruptured right Achilles' tendon and will miss the season, obviously. He will have surgery Monday. Starting corner Fred Smoot sprained his left ankle in the afternoon practice, during an 11-on-11 drill. Coach Jim Zorn said he's hoping Smoot will be out less than a week. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
From the skins.com blog:
Here’s the official tally: Phillip Daniels, torn ACL, out for the year. Alex Buzbee, ruptured Achilles, out for the year. Fred Smoot, turned ankle, mild sprain, dramatic throwing of his shoe when it happened, not expected to miss too much time at all. Vinny Cerrato says that the team is bringing back Jonathan “J.T.” Mapu, who they released a few days ago, as well as bringing in an unnamed veteran. He obviously couldn’t address the Jason Taylor rumors, so that’s what they remain for now. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Taylor really wants to be an actor, and certainly the discussion between the two teams is probably circling around the assumption that Taylor is done after 2008. In that case, we're going to come out of this ahead: the Dolphins have no need for Taylor in a rebuilding year, and we won't have a need for an elderly Taylor in a year or two when we address it in the draft.
With Buzbee and Daniels BOTH down, we have to go get someone. Right now, we have Evans, Carter, Wilson, and Erasmus James, but with Wilson's limitations and James' health, another veteran body is a must. Still, as long as we don't negotiate as if Jason Taylor is already a Redskin (meaning we give up a top three pick), we should come out on top. I'm okay with throwing in a clause that allows a 4th round pick to become a 3rd rounder if Taylor plays in 16 games for us, but I'm also okay if this doesn't get done at all. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
John Clayton just said on ESPN that he wouldn't be surprised if a deal would be done for Jason Taylor in less than 24 hours. I don't think the Tuna will let twinkle toes go for less than a secound rounder...
|
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I like bringing back JT Mapu, but he's a DT. As far as Vinny's denial it means nothing, he isn't going to report on any potential trade, especially in a deal with a guy who hates leaks as much as Tuna. It will be interesting to see if the deal gets made, we're definitely in the market for a DE so our bargaining position is automatically weakened.
|
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I'm betting by late Monday, it's a done deal. The Skins could throw in a player to sweeten the pot.
|
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
unless they can get jason taylor to sign a 3 or 4 year contract extension, they should'nt trade for him.he's stated he only is gonna play 1 more year and it would be dumb to trade away a pick for just 1 season for anybody.

Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
Taylor is underszed for what we need him to do.
I wouldnt offer anything better than a 5th rounder for him. |

Glazer on Fox is reporting we're about to deal a 2nd rounder to Miami for Taylor:

Comcast is reporting that the trade is complete.
2nd rounder for JT. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
I would have held for a 3rd, but what the hey.
|
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
We're really bad at this trading thing.
At least we acquired a quality player. |
Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)
JT is better than Daniels. Let's hope he's still got something in the tank. I worry about his motivation, but hopefully Blache will light a fire under his ass.
Carter and Taylor as bookends is not bad in the short term. Let's hope Vinny can get the pick back one way or another. |
