Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Trouble is some people don't want to even give players the chance to put up or shut up.
I agree...it's frustrating to me to see so much impatience from other fans. It's crazy to think that a new head coach is going to step right in and win 10 games. I know it's happened before (twice last year), but this team is probably going to look bad a few Sundays this season, I really hope that people will, for once, be patient. There are a bunch of guys who will be looked upon to play key roles this season who do not have much experience in this league: Doughty, Campbell, Kelly, Thomas, Davis, even Rocky. I'm afraid that the outcry for veterans is just going to produce more of the same: 1 year runs to the playoffs without ever really buildling anything. DISCLAIMER: This post is not to tear down everyone on this site, there are a lot of Skins fans (not all members of this site, a lot of the callers to Riggins show) who are so impatient that they won't put up with a team trying to build. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Roy Williams continues to make Pro Bowls on reputation too
agreed!i think he makes the pro bowl cause all the cowboys fans vote numerous times for him,and all the other a$$hole cowboys!satan owns the team,so i'm sure he helps out too. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
No.
Leave Lynch alone. Our Safety competition is already crowded, so why bring in a veteran, on the downside of his career, to take a spot away from a younger & more athletic player that needs to be groomed? No thanks. Congrats on a good career Lynch, but NO SOUP FOR YOU!! |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
I don't think we should pick up Lynch to replace any of our guys, but rather, to mentor them. Our 4 safeties are very young guys, I think being around someone like Lynch would be a great influence.
The safeties already have a mentor...meet him. http://www.redskins.com/team/cprofile.jsp?id=57 No need to pick up a twilight safety when the Skins have 2 competent safeties ready to rock and roll. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
"Lynch is 37, but he's a great player and leader. If we can get him for a decent price and is willing to go along with our schemes, I think he would be a fantastic pickup. Thoughts?"
Are you for real? Denver was 5th WORST in points allowed and 3rd down pct. They were 11th WORST in yards per play and 1st downs per game. Overall they were just below middle of the pack 19th, but that is based on 7th in pass (read Champ Bailey and Dre Bly) and 30th in run defense. Lynch was a sieve. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Why would we bring a Safety who can't do a good job in coverage? There's a reason why Lynch wasn't practicing with the Nickel and Dime packages, because he has lost a step and can't cover. The only way we could justify bringing him, is if he would be willing to play LB (like what Philly was trying to do with Michael Lewis). Then again, if you want a LB, you can go after Takeo Spikes or Godfrey.

Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Ok, now that I got that out of my system it's time to argue. The stigma that Reed Doughty is not a starter in this league is killing me and the view that we need to replace him after he proved himself to the point of earning a starting job this year is obsurd.
Now before I get further into this argument let me say that I think the anxiousness to replace Doughty with a bigger name is based, for a good amount of people, on lossing a player like Sean Taylor. I think people got use to the idea of having two big name safetys and they want that back. Thats why every available safety that pops up gets a strong push from "lobbyist" here on the Warpath. Other people just want the Redskins to have better Madden players so they can use them when the game comes out. With that said, the last time we ignored a productive player on our roster in favor of a big name we signed Adam Archuletta and let Ryan Clark go to the Steelers. Afterwards people were begging for Ryan Clark to come back in the months leading up to the draft. I don't know the KC Joyner metrics on how Reed played last year but we do have numbers such as tackles and such that we can match up with endorsements from the coaching staff. First of all his performance at SS when he started looks identical in terms of numbers when compared to Landry's time at SS and as I have stated before, if Doughty is as good as a rookie (first 8 or so games) Laron Landry then awesome. On top of that Doughty was cited by Cooley as the hardest working player this offseason and by Cooleys own admission he see's Doughty having a breakout year. Now does this mean it will happen, not necessarily (see JP Losman), but SS is a lot easier to play then QB and Doughty performed well at SS last year. If someone can prove otherwise please let me know as I only have numbers, endorsements, and overall defensive performance to go on at this point so if someone has anything else to counter this then let me know. However everyone's favorite new Redskin Stuart Schwiegert has yet to convince Blache that a Landry-Schweigert combo is better then a Landry-Doughty combo. And untill we see otherwise I am going to continue to endorse Doughty as the starting SS for 2008. He's at least earned that.
Area 51 can never be replaced. We need to give Doughty a chance. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
No!
No more retreads. At some point a player has to earn their roster spot. Make a young guy earn the spot and we will be better off down the road.
I like the sound of that...Its just fools gold that we always buy into..Lets stay strong face forward and leave John where he is. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
I wonder how many times we are going to have to go through this as the mass of aging veterans start getting released during the pre-season?
Let's try and follow some simple guidelines. 1. If the player is old as dirt don't bother. 2. If the player is washed up don't bother. 3. If the player doesn't address and area of need like LB don't bother.
ARE YOU SERIOUS!!! First the guy is not washed up. Second he is a hard hitting Strong Safety. Third he would be a short term fix. Fourth He is a proven veteran (unlike Doughty) and he frees up Landry to make plays in the secondary. I would definitley sign him to a 1-2 year deal |

If we're going to sign a veteran, it should be at the LB position. |

Who would you rather have Doughty or a proven vet in John Lynch?
Who would you rather have Doughty or a proven vet in John Lynch?
John Lynch 3+ years ago, but not now. We have greater needs at the LB position, and it would not be wise to spend our money on someone like Lynch. Besides, Lynch is most likely not coming back to the NFL. |

Didn't Doughty proved himself last season? And please look at SmootSmack's post above yours.. It says it all.. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Who would you rather have Doughty or a proven vet in John Lynch?
Doughty Proven vet in this case is simply a euphemism for "old guy with eroding skills who is past his prime" Doughty on the other hand already has formed a bond with the rest of the secondary, he did what was asked of him last year, he knows his role on the team and he has upside. |
Who would you rather have Doughty or a proven vet in John Lynch?
How about we let the next generation have a chance to develop. Or in John Lynch's case the next next generation. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Doughty, with Horton as a very competent back-up. We're set!
|
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
I don't think we should get him. If he was younger I might want him but we need to give
Doughty a chance. And with Horton's performance last night that gives us a little bit of depth. So from me it's a know. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
I say yes if for the vet minnimum. Doughty tackled well early on but missed horribly on the Clark move towards the sideline (IND FG) and afterwards. Schweigert looked slow to react in what looked like a IND-flooded cover-2 zone which he gave up a TD. Horton may be given a shot with the starting D if this continues.

I agree. The more I see Horton the more I like him. Even though it is 1 game. He showed speed and hitting ability but I am worried about his coverage ability. With that I wouldn't be surprised if he started this year or next, but I will wait until preseason is over to say if he should start or not. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Doughty was not impressive Sunday night but Lynch will bring back memories of Adam Archuletta. He's lost a few steps. Maybe more than a few. Plus we have no cap space for him. Our Tackles are dropping, I'd rather invest in an OT.

Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Not really in favor of signing Lynch, however releasing Schweigert opens up that possibility.

I think the main thing is the last you said, he's 6 years older than Arch & is definitely at the end of his career. I could only see him signing in dc if there was a serious rash of safety injuries, kinda like when we got Taylor after Daniels & Buzbee went down. |
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
Lynch is done. Forget about it.
|
Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
The idea of signing John Lynch is silly. We need him like we all need holes in our head. I think we will be just fine with Reed playing SS.

He's about to line up with The Ade

Re: John Lynch is available, should we make a move?
No Thanks to John Lynch. Let Doughty and Horton battle it out. The best man will win and the Redskins defense will be a better unit for it (not to mention having a quality backup who is young). No reason to screw up team chemistry at this point for a guy who MIGHT play 1 season.
HAIL!! |

How? Lynch can't cover anyone. Belicheat will brain wash him and make him play LB, making the combined age of their LBs to be close to 200 yrs. LOL. |

We should make a move on closing this thread........
