Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

Well, Blache said prior to the first preseason game, that Tryon was a steal and he is the real deal. I am not sure how he feels now, but I see him in position to make the play most of the time. He simply fails to make the play. I am confident that he will do better, and I am also 100% sure he makes the 53 man roster. Rookies are rookies and they take time to develop. Even Chris Long looked like a fool on a running play, and he is making a zillion dollars.

I think it is safe to say that Blache won't fall in love with Tryon...now a stripper that's another thing. LOL.

My list of first cuts:

1. Horrace Gant
2. Partick Ghee
3. Justin Hamilton(kind of like this one), rather see Vernon Fox
4. Cedric Holt
5. Todd Wade(My Suprise Cut)

I hate to say this, but when he made the comment that a rookie will brake your heart after the Buffalo game, I wondered if he was talking about Tryon.
Yeah, I was frustrated by that pick. There was still a lot of CB talent on the board. USF's Trae Williams, Wisconsinn's Jack Ikegwuono, Boise State's Orlando Scandrick, Nebraska's Zack Bowman and if you were gonna reach, reach for a guy like Grand Valley State's Brandon Carr, who the Chiefs got in the 5th. Time will tell, and it's only been two games, but I haven't seen much, if anything, to say this guy's gonna be OK.
I would agree. I'm a huge Bowman fan. I was hoping we would get him, albeit in the 5th round or later.

Probably, since someone on this board (I believe) said that Blache had good things to say about drafting Tryon.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

Well, looks like I'm in the minority on Leigh Torrence. I don't see why everybody is so anxious to give him a pass. I saw him get toasted in the Chicago game last year, and now he's getting toasted by second round rookies.

Like I said, none of the nickel/dime corners are stepping up. I only favor Tryon at this point because we spent a 4th round draft choice on him. If he continues his ho-hum performance, oh well ... see ya.
Just one cautionary note about McMullin:

He has a ton of experience in the West Coast Offense - - in practice. His game performances over his entire career have yet to rise to the level of "mediocre".

Is he better than Mix? Maybe. But don't get lathered up about the "treatness that is Mr. McMullin" just yet. He's been a major disappointment wherever he's been so far...
There is no question that McMullen has out-performed Anthony Mix at this point. Has Mix even caught a pass yet? Doesn't matter now because Mix is done.

I don't think anyone here is getting "lathered up" about McMullen. In fact, there's no point in getting worked up about him because there won't be any room for him on the roster anyway. I don't see anyone breaking into the Moss/Randle El/Thrash/Thomas/Kelly lineup. Those positions are locked up -- and there won't be a sixth wideout.

I agree with this, given the needs on other areas such as the Secondary and the Linebackers there's no point in having a sixth WR.

Not sure why you are so convinced of that. Zorn likes to run 3 and 4 WR sets quite often, so it's reasonable to think he might want the extra depth at WR.

Seattle had 6 WRs on their roster last year. So did Green Bay, another WCO team.

Beemnseven 08-10-2008 10:15 PM

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

I'm basing that on keeping nine O-linemen, three tight ends, three running backs, two fullbacks, and three QBs. Though I'm not sure who the second FB will be, I can only assume there will be since the WCO is one that heavily utilizes that position. Then there's the possibility that Marcus Mason is too good to ignore and they can't risk putting him on the PS -- so then you have four running backs.

I just don't see how there will be enough room, unless you subtract an O-lineman and/or a TE or FB.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

As of right now we only have 1 FB on the roster and that's Sellers. I'm not sure we need to carry 2 since Rock is also capable of playing there.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

Here's is my breakdown on how many guy's we may keep at certain positions to make up the final 53 man roster

9-OL You have the starting 5 plus Heyer, Rinehart, Fabini, and Wade?

3- TE Davis, Yoder, and some guy who has 2 C's in his name

3- QB- I belive this is pretty obvious

5- (4 RB & 1 FB) Portis, Betts, Cartwright, and Mason... FB Sellers

6 WR- The five in Moss, ARE, Davis, Thomas, and Thrash (SP teams player) and I do wonder about the 6th (if we keep one the final 53 or not)

Offense- 26 players

Just in my breakdowns ... Will we keep 26 offensive guys on the 53 man roster?

2- Kickers Suisham, Frost or Brooks?

1-SP Ethan "The Big Red Machine" Albright

This would only leave 24 spots for the Defense

4- DE Carter, Taylor, James, Wilson or Evans ( Maybe Jackson with starting James on the PUP list) I can see keeping 5 here with Wilson and Evans being special teamers

4- DT Golston, Montgomery, Golston, and ???

6- LB Washington, Mcintosh, Fletcher. sinclair, Campbell, and Blades

5- CB Springs, Smoot, Rodgers, and then WHO? I am really having a hard time spotting and quality Depth here

4- S Landry, Doughty, then the last 2 are question marks in my book. could be Fox for his special teams play

Is that really enough Defensive guys and enough player to fill special teams squads?

I really don't know I would have to say no.. We will have to trim off one or two offensive guys to make the roster work well. Which will mean some tough decisions.

Art....I think you are forgetting the practice squade for some of the OL, Since Mix is injured I would suggest putting him on PS then allow him to maybe fight for a job later when he's healthy, ....and under DT you put Golston twice unless I'm a moron.lol.

I guess we all will be supprised by some of the cuts.

As good a McMullen was in college you have to think that if he ever gets into a good situation with his head on straight he'll be a productive #3 type guy. He seems better mentally now and his position right is hard to beat. Also he is just one of those guys that feels alike a "gut". In other words he just seems like he is going to be a valuable piece for us while the other guys feel like just that "other guys".

Well Mix is only out a week but a busted rib for a WR is going to be a problem in terms of performance. They constantly get hit in the mid section.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

Everyone seems to be basing their opinions on how players are doing at their positions, but a lot of these guys will have to make it on spec. teams. Mix is a spec. teams ace, don't know if you could get that out of mcmullen. Usually, the no. 4 wr wr has to play teams, that means that 3 wrs might be playing spec. teams if they keep 6.

The o line & fullback depth is likely to be sacrificed for the sake of keeping 6 wr's IMO. We know MIx & Thrash can play teams, maybe Kelly or Thomas will be forced into that action too.

I thought Torrence looked good on saturday. The play v. Hardy was tough, got beat by a great pass. He did a good job of turning to run w/Hardy, something he struggled w/last year. Tryon looks like he still has to think about everything too much, he's a long way from earning regular pt, he'd better bust his butt on spec. teams.

Right, Mix might still have the edge over McMullen based on his age and perceived potential. Should be a good battle to keep an eye on.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team

we'll be keeping 9 DL, like we have every year for 5 years now (though 5 de 4 dt is more likely this year, since evans can play dt). 4th dt is lorenzo alexander. des are taylor, carter, james, evans, and probably jackson over wilson.

no way we keep 2 FBs, no one's worth keeping, and rock lost the weight to play FB, but you could shove yoder in there or recall broughton... either way it's not a great situation, but it won't matter whether we keep them or call them up.

with 4 possible OL practice squad players (though reinhart will never touch a PS) we can probably go a bit lighter on roster OL (tavares, crummey, brown (IR)).

I was hoping that Crummey would be this guy, but it does not look like he is even getting a chance to play center. I think that who ever is the second string center is a lock to make the team. I think right now, that makes Geisinger a lock.

I would have to disagree -- there's potential, and then there's results. So far, Billy McMullen has produced results in the form of getting open and catching passes, while Anthony Mix has produced exactly nothing.

Someone will have to show me where Mix is such a great special teamer, because I haven't seen it.

I agree, I'm just throwing out a possible reason that Mix could still make the cut.

As for his play on special teams check the Bears game from last year.

Well, as for results, McMullen has done fine against scrubs in preseason. Unlike Mix, however, McMullen has had opportunities to start in the regular season and has failed at his previous stops. Additionally, his previous failures were on receiver hungry teams - Philadelphia and Minnesota - so it's not like he was the victim of a numbers game. Finally, his success in Zorn's offense up to this point is due in part to the fact that he is familiar with the WCO (even he admits this). Based on all this, I think McMullen will have to do more than "play well" against second teamers to impress. For him, that has to be the bare minimum. Given his history, McMullen needs to play well against starters and dominate the second teamers.

As for Mix, I think the buzz is gone for him. It doesn't seem that he has impressed the coaching staff too much. Unlike McMullen who has a history of failure and needed to overcome it, Mix has no history. As such, at this point in his career, Mix has needed to step up, show that he has finally made the adjustment to the pro game, and "play well" against the scrubs. He hasn't done that. I am thinking his hype was just the latest warpath man crush.

Right now, I wouldn't be surprised if neither made the final cut.

Good assessment. If there's a tough decision to make at another position and they go w/5 wr's, they both are definitely not in. for both of them there only hope is a 6 wr roster.

Mix was great on the kickoff coverage team last year. for that reason danny smith might lobby for him to stay.

I don't see anyway they cut e. james. Especially since his old college coach is there. I think they are going to give him a roster spot and see what he can do this year. If nothing, he gets cut for next year.

No way Toler makes the team. What has he brought to the table the past two preseason games? You mean to tell me he has left more of an impression on the coaches or you then Mix or McMullen? Totally disagree here.

Derrick Devine sealed his fate with that pass into the end zone that was short. No way Zorn keeps him around. I know he likes him, but lets face it, what purpose does he serve to this team? Why would you even put him on the practice squad? He will never play, never be a back-up, so why waste time with him? Brennan is JC's future back up and Collins (I know he is old) is here for three years. Don't waste the time or spot for him.

McMullen can't choose which tier of players he lines up against. If he's facing only the scrubs, then that's by the design of his coaches, and all he can do is perform the best that he can despite the level of competition from the opposition.

The more I hear, it looks as though there will be six receivers -- and if the roster cut-down were today, I don't see any other wideout that's ahead of him.

I know this all sounds like I have a man-crush on McMullen -- I don't, for the record. I just can't identify another receiver who has out performed him.
You have Maurice Mann ahead of Billy McMullen? What in your mind has Geisinger done to beat out Todd Wade?
Geisinger has been earning praise from his teammates, particularly the QBs for his work handling the offense line while at the Center position. Also, I think Wade will be one of Zorn's "I'm running the show now" cuts. The ones that that every new coach has to remind people that there's a new sheriff in town. I think Wade and Khary Campbell will be the victims of that.

McMullen should be playing well. He has extensive experience in NFL regular season games and with the WCO. However, I think this is the best we'll get out of B Mac, a solid big receiver who can shine (to an extent) against nickel corners but likely won't get much playing time. I think Mann on the other hand will get more time on teams, has more upside, and gets better separation as a receiver. I also think the presence of a veteran WCO guy in Thrash makes McMullen more expendable. I wouldn't be surprised actually if McMullen even requested he get released earlier to improve his chances of latching onto another team that could use him more so than we would. I think he'd be a good fit in Denver for example.
