After not having been on a course since I hacked my way through 9 holes 15 years ago, I've decided this summer to really try to make an effort to learn the game. So I've been to the driving range a handful of times. And I'm hoping that next spring/summer I'll take some formal lessons. But here's my question. If you're just starting off on your own by going to the range. What's the best way to start. Just take out the driver and unload, practice with all the various clubs, pick one particular club (could be a driver, could be another) and perfect your swing with that one? This weekend I practiced my swing with only the pitching wedge. Good idea?
Get lessons now. Fooling around with your swing before lessons is probably a mistake. I don't play anymore because it was a waste of my time if I couldn't put in the time to make all the money and lessons worth it. I won't touch a club until I can start taking lessons and putting in the right amount of time at the range and can play regularly. If you are going to work on your swing I'd focus on using a 7 and maybe like a 4 iron. That way you can do a little "cross training" and it'll help you develop a more rounded feel for swinging the clubs. |

If you practice hitting the ball wrong then a pro is just going to change your swing and it is harder to learn after you have been practicing a bad swing. When I first got back into to golf I would take a leason then the pro would say now go practice what we did today by hitting 500 balls (don't try hitting 500 balls in one day). After I got that down I'd take another leason learning something else then hitting another 500 balls. Today I'm shooting in the low 80's to high 70's and still take 5 leasons a year. You can learn to play golf without leasons but at some point you will hit a wall and your score will never get any better. I just don't understand the guy's who play alot of golf and never take any leasons and I can take their money just about every round. |

I tend to be very competitive so when I golf I want to be good at it. Playing and struggling to break 100 half the time got old. Hopefully the long layoff will alow me to forget a lot of my bad habits so I can start clean again some day. I wish I was good at golf. |

From what you were saying we're in the same ballpark. I was at about a 6 at the end of last summer but haven't played much this year due to a new baby coming into our lives. If I went out right now I'd probably shoot right around 80, my touch on the greens would suffer. Always takes a few rounds to get that back. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
Should the all go relatively the same height though, or are some meant to give a higher lift on the ball?
The peak height that the ball reaches, believe it or not, doesn't vary all that greatly from club to club. There's some variance but not that much. What changes is how fast the ball gets up in the air. A 9 Iron is a high-loft club, and thus will pop up in the air very quickly. A 3 Iron is a low-loft club and will take longer to reach its peak trajectory. But it also travels further than the 9, taking longer to reach the peak. So if you're hitting the clubs the right way, the trajectory of the ball as it falls towards the green should be about the same whether you hit a 9 or a 3. What makes holding a green so tough with a 3 Iron and so easy with a 9 has more to do with the spin on the ball than the trajectory. Sometimes a 9 iron or P wedge is called for when you have a tree 40 yards in front of you and you need to get up over it. |

I actually find that when I play less golf I usually play better and I think part of that is my body forgets the bad habbits I get into when I play more often. Hae you had leasons in the past or are you self taught? Alot of the guys I play with play several times a week and most of then have a hard time getting into the 80's. I just don't understand why someone who loves golf and plays all the time refose to take leasons to get better at the game. |

If you watch the pros play yeaterday the announcers commented about hitting longer shots into the greens with a lower trajectory and them bouncing through the green. What he said might pertain to his game but I'd say most golfers hit a 9 iron much higher then a 3 iron. |

Depends, there are tons of ways a pro can hit a 4 Iron. They can cut it and take it high or draw it and keep it low to bore through the wind. There's a difference, but if you're hitting your 3 Iron only half as high as you're hitting your 9, then you're not hitting your 3 correctly. |

The difference isn't the height it is the trajectory and ball speed. It will go a similar height but a 3 iron will maintain velocity on a high plane for a longer time while a 9 iron will reach peak height quickly and come down sooner (due to a loss of efficiency in energy transfer because of the greater angle of the face of the club). Throw a ball straight up at x speed and it will reach a certain height and come straight down in the same spot as it was launched. Throw the ball out towards the horizon at a slightly greater speed (accounting for energy loss) and it will reach a similar height but come down much further away of course and take a bit longer to reach the ground. Plain physics. Of course golf shots don't all take place in a vacuum and there are dozens of variables that contribute to the height and speed of a struck ball. |

I agree I might hit my 5 iron as high as my 9 and maybe my 4 might go as high but my 3 iron I know does not go as high. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
SS - as others have said, work your way from pitching wedge back up to 3 wood. Leave the driver in the bag until you are comfortable hitting the 3 wood consistently. When I first started out, I hit 5 wood off the tee because I was consistently in the fairway with it.
For me, I'm much more comfortable with my odd number clubs so if I go to the driving range, I'll leave them in the bag and hit wedge, 8, 6, 4, 3 instead of wedge, 9, 7, 5, 3 (I always hit wedge and I'm very clumsy with my 3 iron). I might hit my last 10-20 with my driver, but take my time in doing so to unwind a bit. And if your driving range has it, go hit off the grass. Those turf mats are great for consistent lie, but you won't have that consistency when playing on a course. And for reference I'm about 175 with my 5 iron and 150 or so with my 7 iron. I remember when I first started being around 150 with my 5 iron... |
Re: Any Golf Players?
Had arm surgery and can't play this year, but I usually do.
I'm not very good but it's fun. Although, I'm a very good putter...just getting to the green takes a while. :D |
I'm curious if anyone in here plays golf? I just started playing a month ago and I'm having a blast so far. I'll need to buy my own clubs pretty soon, any recommendations?
I've been playing for 12 years. I love it and play to about a 12. My best suggestion is to get with a known local pro who isn't too expensive and take lessons. He'll also show you how to buy clubs and get fitted. DO NOT get caught up in buying expensive clubs at first. Invest in your swing, not your clubs. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
My biggest problem right now I'll have a great front or back but just cannot seem to play a full 18 even keel. Last week I shot a 44 on the front and a 37 on the back and the week prior I had a good front and a bad back. I'm shooting in the low 80's but just cannot hit enough good shots to get me in the high 70's. I have had two eagles this summer because I'm hitting my driver very well. Its fun ragging on guys who spend $400 on a driver and I'm hitting it 30 to 50 yards past them with a knock off driver that cost $85.00.
LMAO...I play with some guys that have $500 drivers and can barely hit it 200 yards. I play with a 1996 or 97 set of King Cobra woods and hit my 5 wood well past their drives....And it's all because I got with a good pro and he showed me how to swing with my body and not my hands and arms. If I put my woods on ebay I probably wouldn't get $85 for the whole set. lol. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
No, my 9 goes about 150. I don't really hit my pitching wedge unless it's a longer chip, I just take some off of my nine or I hit my sand wedge. My 7 is around a solid 170-175 and I hit my 5 iron 210 last week on a second shot at a par 5.
I will say that I do have a long and very hard swing that I have toned down some in the last few years and will probably have to keep doing so as I get older, but right now at 23, I hit the ball a pretty long way. Golf Club Distance Calculator My entries: Avg 5 Iron: 200 yards Player: 16-29 Male Style of Play: For the fun of it Ability of Play: Average Physical build: Taller heavier than average Golf Mechanics: Good Training: Infrequent Lessons Avg Shot: About Straight This ends up pretty much the distances that I hit my clubs. I tend to get a little bit more out of my driver when I hit it really well than they're strong, but other than that I can't argue. I've never tried to check the distance on my wedges because I have trouble taking full swings and hitting them straight.
Good lord.... and I thought I was long. I see you're up in Balt. Its funny with my game I hit my short irons long and my long irons shorter compared to longer hitters. For example I hit my 9 150 to 155 but my 4 only 200 but I do crank my driver 250 to 280 and sometimes 300 when I'm feeling good standing on the box. My putting is better but it comes and goes. If I start off hitting some putts I'm usually good for the round but if a start off missing stuff it seems the hole gets smaller and smaller as the round goes on. |

I only ever played Diamond Ridge while living there. I haven't played in about a year. (Moved to Annapolis, away from my golfing buddy, a little less money lying around) I really wish I could get out more. I only work half days Fridays and this thread is giving me the itch again. I'm playing in a golf tourney at the end of the month, so I should get back out there. EDIT: Your post just reminded me to change my loc to Annapolis. I think I might try to play Renditions one day relatively soon. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
For anyone in the Tidewater Area my club is having its annual golf outing on Sept the
11th at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. Its $400.00 a team which includes lunch, dinner, and cold ones all day and we do flight the groupings so everyone has a chance to win (the pro flights after the scores are turned in to him). 100% of the money we raise stay here in our area and goes toward hearing impared children or other causes that we feel can use our help. Get a team together and come out and have some fun for a good cause. If interested just drop me a PM and I'll get the sign up sheet to you. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
Just read through this thread. SS, you've gotten some good advice here.
I used to play so much more than I do now. I've been working a ton this summer (everyday but Sundays), so I've only played a few times this season. My iron play is still solid and my putting is steady, but boy do my driver, 3, and 5 wood suck right now. I've been hitting my 3 iron off the tee. Better to go 220 yards in a straight line than a 300 yard slice. I'm probably a high 90's golfer right now. Ick. About 8 years ago when I was playing at the University of Florida course 2 or 3x a week (back then it was $14 for 18 holes with a student ID), I would break 90 pretty often. Even had an 85 once. Those days are long gone unfortunately. Hey Angry, we still gotta get out and play sometime. Even if it's just a quick 9 at Sligo Creek. |

I've played there twice (2 of my fraternity brothers worked there right after college) and it's an awesome course. From what I remember (I played there back in '02), I used just about every club in my bag. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
I've been playing for about 15 years now, and I purchased some Wilson Deep Red Fat Shaft irons about 8 years ago. They were about $500 at the time, and considering that I'm still using them, it was a good value. If you're a "middle of the road" kind of guy, I'd look into these -- although golf technology changes quickly, and they could be outdated now.
In general, I'd get steel irons and graphite woods. I don't like graphite irons, because they flex too much and are more delicate -- seen too many graphite irons broken on trees. Also, my graphite woods are stiff graphite. In the end, it comes down to personal preference. |
Re: Any Golf Players?
Another tidbit:
Look to buy your gear online -- the savings are ridiculous. I purchased a 450cc Deep Red II graphite driver for $165 (retail $400+). I also purchased a Pelz sand wedge for $65 (retail $120+). Both were brand new, in the wrapping. I also gotta say, the Pelz wedges are awesome. This is about the only club I would recommend hands-down over all others. |

I play with a guy who does not have a pretty drive and his second shot is often OK but just off the green but the dude is $ with short chips and putting. I never played with anyone who could read the greens like he can (thats with little effort) and then slap the putt in. When we play with someone new when they hear his score at the end of the round they all get that ? look like he could not have shot that low. What they don't remember is all those up and downs he gets and they only remember his ugly drive and second shots. |

Look to buy your gear online -- the savings are ridiculous.
A lot of pre-owned stuff is practically brand new, so if you are unsure, buy used. Re: Any Golf Players?
If you are new to golf or just getting back into the game then buying golf clubs should go hand to hand with leasons. I good pro should be able to recomend the type of club (I did not say brand) that best fits your swing. The pro will want to sell you some clubs but most all the time they are much higher then the average store or buying on line. No matter what you buy get them fitted so the sole of the club will rest even across the ground. After using my clubs for years I finally had them fitted to my stance and I guessing I picked up 4 to 5 strokes right away.

Re: Any Golf Players?
Ogio makes sweet bags, but they're expensive.

Re: Any Golf Players?
I love the guy who trys out a new driver and is pounding it at the rang. They then throw down $400 for the driver and cannot hit it worth a dam when they go to the course. I call that sticker shock. Your shocked how bad you hit the club after paying for the thing and removing the sticker. SS you really only need to spend around $75 for a bag unless your going to be walking and in that case a good super light bag makes good sense.

Re: Any Golf Players?
Practiced some with the pitching wedge this morning. Started off poorly, failing to get it past about 80-90 yards but then I settled in and was able to start consistently hitting it about 115 yards with pretty good loft...but more often than not it would hook to the right, couldn't keep it straight

Re: Any Golf Players?
That'll happen. Keep working at it. I used to be a slicer big time. No matter what club I swung, it was going right. Now I have a slight fade and can actually keep the damn thing in the fairway most of the time.
The big thing to remember is working on keeping the ball straight. Once you start hitting the middle with consistency, the distance will come. My Dad was probably a 12-15 handicap when he played, but his back kept him from playing much. On a typical Par 4, he used to be 3 wood/3 wood/low to mid iron to get on the green. But he was always in the middle of the fairway. |
