I think you make some good points, and much better than some other people who just lash out and insist that Doughty should be cut now and replace him with one of the rookies...that's just not a smart comment. The team has an option of putting Spring at safety, if they feel that Doughty is not cutting it during the regular season. Although, I think having Landry back in, will make Doughty a better player. As I've repeatedly said, Doughty is an average player, you take away Landry and he's not going to carry this team.
I agree that he is average and probably will stay that way his whole career. But I don't think that other teams really had a chance to game plan to attack Reed he was thrown the fire after ST died. Now teams had more film on him and will see the Carolina game were he struggled in the passing game.

The thing that was really disappointing to me was how bad he played against the run, the pass I have come to kind of expect that but how he played against the run my hell.

I think the last of the five cuts will be Goode. I dont see why you keep him when he wont make the team barring injuries. He cant play so what is the point. If they like him they can put him on the practice squad.

Doughty has already been exposed as the player he is, a special teams ace/3rd safety, he is nothing more than that. It's not going to matter if Landry is in the game or not, they have two different assignments. Landry isn't going to be able to do his assignment correctly if he has to compensate for Doughty's weaknesses. Simply put, Doughty is a liability as a starter. I have no problem with Doughty coming in on obvious run plays but other than that he doesn't really have any business playing everydown.

I say we should try to move Kareem Moore to SS, so we can keep Landry at FS, a position at which he clearly excels. That way we have our two best coverage safeties on the field, then have Doughty/Horton come in on run plays and blitz packages. Also, I am against moving Springs to FS because then we have to move Landry back to SS. Plus with Rogers health concerns we can't afford to move Springs to safety.

Does anyone here know how the Skins are against the cap? As we start to see people cut Washington may need to add a veteran back LB.

Yup, it's true. I know they liked him but he never could make much of an impression beyond practice. Oh well, my Maurice Mann Bandwagon lives another day!!!! :)

I can't figure out why they have kept Devine around this long, especially with all the depth issues they've had at LB.
I know that Reed has taken a lot of heat over his performance Saturday (and rightfully so), but I think this is a case where his a good player to have on the team a good locker room guy and a good special teams guy, the problem comes that the more he plays the more other teams are able to expose him - he's good when he has to come in and play a couple of games for an injured player. I think you'll see an indirect competition between Horton and Moore and as soon as the Coaching staff feels that one of them is ready to start - you'll see Reed benched and Landry moved to whatever spot is open.
I think Moore will evntually be the starter by the end of the year..He has looked impressive and for that matter..Horton might move up the chart also. I would be suprised if Doughty is down to 4th on the depth chrt by the end of the year. Not saying he isn't decent. But these guys are playing decent and they hardly know the defense..So imagine when they get more comfortable. I still like Doughty though. But he gets exposed in pass coverage situations.

Re: Upcoming Cuts

What do you guys know about Derrick Pope LB cut from the Vikes?
Hes a young ex-starter....and we arguably need a vet backup LB.

Who else is there at LB or DT or perhaps Safety that we should be looking to pick up?

Im kinda suprised they cut Fox leaving us with no experience at safety...
I dont like 2 rookie backups...I guess their primary backup just may be Springs if they dont find a quality cut

Horton has done well at Strong Safety...
Im not so sure about Moore, his angles sucked bad last game...allowing 3 TDS after 6 solid plays.

Perhaps he needs to adjust to the speed of the game...but each time his angle made him end up behind the ball carrier when he was the last line of defense....he obviously should be ahead of the ball carrier with his helmet crossing their body....it wasn't even close...until he corrects this glaring weakness,...I'd consider him for practice squad and be on the lookout for a decent Free Safety with experience....I never loved Fox, but he was servicable as a backup FS....It looks like Springs will be the backup FS unless we get lucky with cut dates

As most of you know i have recieved some heat and some thanks for Reed Doughty. We really wouldnt be talking about this if it wern't the sad death of Sean. Why do i dislike Doughty? (who seems cool) he was ONLY a replacement for Sean. When he passed he was there those 4 gms. In the offseason we drafted 2 safties which already told me he was nothing more than a special teams guy. When you respond PLEASE dont say laron landry or just give it time. Teams ARE NOT afraid to go after Reed Doughty!!!

Go back and watch the tape. Moore had bad angles because of all the tackles that were missed earlier in the play causing Moore to have to compensate for the missed tackles and thus creating his bad angles. The point is those plays should've been stopped way before they got to Kareem. And there is no way Moore is going to be on the practice squad, he is, as for now, Landry's primary backup at FS.

vallin21 08-25-2008 11:24 PM

Re: Upcoming Cuts

I agree. I wont go out and say moore will BUT he will definitly be landrys backup.

dmvskinzfan08 08-25-2008 11:27 PM

Re: Upcoming Cuts

I think we defnitely need to look at a LB in the pool of cut players and hope that some teams had to let some guys go because they are stacked at that position. Especially with Marcus hip injury that might plague him through out the year (hopefully not) and Rocky Mcintosh trying to get back in to game shape. Those are my primary concerns. I think the O-line will improve and I think Heyer and some of those other fill-ins playing last year might have been a blessing in disguise. I believe in Bugel he will whip these guys into shape. I think we should also look at some DTs. Just my IMO.

22 more to go.

I understand that...however...he is the free safety...and his job is to make the stop when there is a mistackle up front....and there were too many of those...however....I am not letting him off the hook...he didn't do his "safety" job 3 times and that equals 21 points.

will mason make the final 53? an extra reciever? maybe mcmullen? i have to believe devine, rob jackson, tryon, and perhaps crummney and jason goode are all destined for practice squad.

i think you have the right to your opinion, and yes teams are not afraid to go after Reed Doughty...but if we put one of the rookies there, they will also not be afraid of going after the rookies. I've stated that Doughty is an average players, I just get upset at people who just say things like "cut Doughty, put one of the rookies" out of spite without thinking about the situation. Horton could be a starter, but as someone said down the road later in the season. Right now if Doughty really f's it up, then the best option would be to put Springs at Safety, provided that our CB situation is set.

doughtydoubter 08-26-2008 12:34 PM

Re: Upcoming Cuts

putting in springs is definitely the most solid option, i agree that the rookies probably couldnt play much better at this point than reed, but can they play much worse? I think everyone is pretty much agreed this is the glaring weak link in our team. The problem is with the shawn springs sollution, are we set enough with torrence as a nickel back?
i think it will be curious to see how this situation plays out during the season.

Yeah, they cut Burl Toler, Babatunde Oshinowo, Dorian Smith, Vernon Fox, and Matt Sinclair. Also what might be messing you up is today we released Jason Goode, and resigned Danny Verdun-Wheeler. We should be at 75 players by my count. Maybe they didn't update the roster yet.

That's the link if you want to check it out for yourself. I think Jason Goode still has a pretty good chance at making our PS if someone doesn't pick him up by the time we sign our PS players, which is doubtful that another team will considering his turf toe injury.

thanks for the link RMS. yeah good point on the turf toe...he was really really impressive in the few practices i got to check out. Whos going to be the surprise person that makes the active roster this year any thoughts?

I don't know I guess it all depends on who you consider to be a "surprise player", but if I had to go with one I would pick CB Matteral Richardson. I think he clearly has outplayed Tryon, Westbrook, and Holt to be the 5th CB on the roster. Either way I think the 5th CB is going to come down to Tryon and Richardson and whichever one doesn't make the active roster is going to be placed on the PS.

Re: Upcoming Cuts

Just alittle bit of an interesting tidbit: I just heard Vinny Cerrato say on "Redskins Nation" that Kareem Moore and Chris Horton will be on the team. So I guess that eliminates Justin Hamilton and Patrick Ghee at safety, unless we decide to keep 5 safeties.

Yeah, I know neither one had a real shot, but I do know that there were a lot of Justin Hamilton supporters around so I figured they might have an interest in this. Plus it helps people be able to figure out the 53 man roster better.

First. Welcome to the board

Second. The Bears let Ricky Manning go today, he would be worth a look for a nickel/dime position in my opinion.

Yeah I just heard about that a few minutes ago. I definitely agree with you about giving Manning a look. I am sure he's an upgrade over Leigh Torrence.

He's better than 07 Torrence, but worse then what I hope 08 Torrence will be.

Richardson would be a suprise to me...but I dont think Tryon has earned a spot either...its possible we hit up a free agent for #5 too

Torrence is a lock, hes looked improved to me..a decent #4 and arguably #3 potential on other teams.

At this point the only question is if they keep Chris Wilson, Mason or McMullen.
Not much has changed.
I say, Wilson and McMullen are likely gone to make way for Mason.
They need to send Mason out in 4 WR sets to see if they can get WR value there

Rob Jackson has already outplayed Chris Wilson and is probably just below EJames. He probably has a 50/50 shot unless the Skins pick up DL LB or Safety Depth from other cuts...hed be the first to go because of his practice squad eligibility

My "desire" for Manning would be more due to Springs getting the majority of his playing time this year at safety, not as a replacement for Torrence necessarily.

Re: Upcoming Cuts

i think manning would be a solid pickup myself...indeed to make for springs at saftey which would ultimately improve our apparent weakest spot on defense.
