Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
Bring in brennan!!! what have we got to lose??
15 more games genius.. He's nowhere close to being ready to even be a #2. I know it's going to sound CRAZY to the proponents of 'Redskins Football' meaning 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but do you want to get CP going? Start the game-and drives-by THROWING THE FOOTBALL. The NFL today is a vertical league.. You've got to use the pass to set up the run.. Especially with our history, teams are expecting us to run, run, pass and they sit on that.. What happens when we play into that trend? 3 and out. Teams that come off the bus throwing (Philly, Dallas, NE, SD, Indy, even Pittsburgh!) are able to loosen up the defense, opening running lanes for their backs. One of the biggest things missing from the offense the past 5 years is the deep attempt, notice I didn't say completion. Percentages are against completing many deep balls, but 3 positive things can happen from a deep attempt. 1-A completion, 2-An interference call, 3-defensive coordinators and guys in the secondary know you aren't afraid to challenge deep. The only real negative is an interception, but that's a risk with any throw. Either way, if defensive coaches and players KNOW you're not throwing beyond 15 yards they will creep and crowd the line making running the ball nearly impossible. Portis is not Riggins-lite, as he was miscast to be the past 4 years, he's a back that operates best in space. He likes running inside, but not when there is a linebacker and safety clogging every gap it's going to make it impossible to get 4.5 YPC which he needs to regain his near elite status. |
Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
I can't tell you how frustrated I get when I see 9 or 10 guys in the box and Portis getting hit in the backfield. It's such a waste of a great talent. As Portis mentioned in the WaPo article, we need to develop a passing game to develop a running game. Our O-line isn't dominant like the Vikes', but our passing attack is as anemic as the Vikes. Portis isn't going to average 4.5+ ypc until we fix one of those problems.

That article made me sad... He doesn't want to be here :(

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
I'm would like for CP to use all this wisdom on the field instead of in the press. I would really like for my "Leader", and highest paid player to lead by example in all phases of the business
"I wish I could go to a team for one week with the best offensive line, or the team with the best scheme, and switch places with their back and see how others would do in this system," Portis said, sitting on a couch the other day at Redskins Park. "I get a lot of touches with nowhere to run. I could see if I got all those touches and had some lanes, but there's nine or 10 men in the box. Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
People can dream all they want about the Portis of old but he's a different player now. I actually think he's a more complete back now vs when he was in Denver.
I actually agree with you. I think he is a better blocker and a smarter back than he ever has been before. We all want CP to have 5 yds per carry. But lets be honest, in a run run pass scheme that has prevailed here for his tenure as a redskin it is hard to gut out anything more promising than 3 yds a carry. For all of you CP people that want the portis of old, you should be screaming to the offense to put some fear in their passing game, so their isnt 9 people in the box and lil' clinton doesnt get stuffed for only 2-3 yards any more... |

Redskin Insider:
Posted at 3:40 PM ET, 09/12/2008 The Portis Interview: Director's Cut From Barry Svrluga So Clinton Portis obviously had some interesting things to say in the story we ran in this morning's paper. That wasn't all he said, though. He was in a very talkative mood. Here is some other free-flowing stuff from your favorite tailback, some Portis out-takes: How have you changed as a person and a back since you came to Washington?: "As a back, I've changed to basically doing what's asked of me," Portis said. "Coming in here, being used to daylight and big runs and high expectations, and feeling prepared to change the organization around and carry the organization, and all of a sudden it didn't work that way, for whatever reason, and all of a sudden you have to take that criticism. Of course you become blamed, but at the same time, I felt like I put in the work. It wasn't like I didn't show up for work. You look back over every game I've played in since I've been here, whether I had the yards or not, you can't sit here and tell me I didn't give you everything I had on the field. |
Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
Saw this on ComCast, where they quoted what CP said in the Post.. What does CP mean here . Does he mean he wants out, is he calling out his O-Line, is he bashing JC saying he needs to step up the passing game, is he trying to say that hes making yards and he earns all the yards he gets or saying he doesnt like the system or thats its not a good system. Or could he be saying that the Defense of the other teams know the passing game is not working so they put 8-10 on the line. NOT TRYING TO START THINGS JUST WANT TO SEE WHAT OTHERS GET FROM THIS AND HOW THEY READ CP'S STATEMENTS.
This is just 1 of the quotes they highlighted on comcast. "I wish I could go to a team for one week with the best offensive line, or the team with the best scheme, and switch places with their back and see how others would do in this system," Portis said, sitting on a couch the other day at Redskins Park. Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
It's just frustration on his part. He's been a battering ram for Skins. He doesn't see many open holes.
I don't think he wants to play elsewhere, he's just saying there's nothing wrong w/ CP it's our scheme/lack of execution. He's just frustrated w/ not having any running room. That's why i started this thread...i was frustrated w/ seeing a GREAT back...not seeing his full potential b/c of our (coaching/personnel/FO/scheme...pick one). I didn't think the article was a big deal b/c I could hear it was just frustration. Do you ever come home from work and just want to bitch for an hour? That's what that was. |
Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
He has been whinging and whining about something or other ever since he got here.
That's the way he is. I wish he would just STFU and do his job. |

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
CP and LB are our best weapons on offense. We all know this phrase...running sets up the passing the ball. Establish a run and I bet you see it much easier to pass the ball. As for CP's production in denver vs his production here...I think denver has proved they can insert just about any rb into that lineup and they seem to produce. Another thing to keep in mind is this is not the AFC west.

He shows up on Sundays, nobody can deny that.
I would like to see him be more of a leader on the practice field Monday through Saturday. I think he's missing a golden opportunity there. |

Criticizing the O-line and Zorn's scheme two days before the game isn't cool. Granted, the O-line deserves some criticism, but let the coaches, fans, and media handle that. |

Thats asking a little to much (although I do agree).......Portis has never been one to keep his mouth shut. Hope he has a HUGE game tomorrow! |

Re: I Want To See The Clinton Portis Of Old
Portis Is Not The Only Offensive Threat We Have. He Is Off To A Very Good Start This Year. Hell Of A Td Run Today. He Will Bust Long Runs This Year. When Portis Was In Denver They Probably Had The Best Run Blocking O-line In The Legaue. I Liostened To The Game On Sirius-campbell Seemed To Come Around In 2nd. Half. The Go Ahead Score Was A Hell Of A Throw. Looking Forward To Cards At Home Game 3.
