Re: If the election was held today
I will keep this short and sweet.
If I still believed that our role and involvement in Iraq was necessary and we needed a strong Commander in Chief then I would be voting for McCain. Right now America is in more debt that it ever has been, the value of the dollar is down, and the economy sucks (not to mention the value of my mutual funds). I am voting for Obama to get us out of this mess. Fact: according to Ali Velshi of CNN "The economy is the strongest with a Democratic president and a Republican Congress"
But we're likely to have a Democratic congress, no? So should we then have a Republican President? |

Re: If the election was held today
Surprised no one has pulled this out yet...
I'm undecided at this point, leaning towards Obama. Even with the banter strewn across the Parking Lot, I really haven't done much research. But it's hard to, being a Registered Republican in a state that is dominated by 2 counties and a independent city. I'll get around to it and make an educated choice. But until then, it'll be swell watching the smear ads, and hearing one call the other a snake in the grass, or whatever banter they throw around. |

We've got saden posting a bunch of YT clips and equating the Republicans with dirty tampons, Buster implying the whole left is a bunch of flag-burners, jsarno clinging to one minor little clip of Obama during the Pledge of Allegiance and saying who knows what about the antichrist, and so on. And for the most part we're talking about people here who (even if I don't agree with their political beliefs/opinions) have shown they have pretty good knowledge of the actual issues. (Others here, of course, have shown they should just stick to football). Yet it's like no one even cares anymore about anything but belittling the other side. Hopefully, whoever it is that is elected, the country can rally around the new President and put Country First (couldn't resist :) ) |

I know what you're saying, it just doesn't discredit the poll and/or Obama. Most of the countries polled are our allies, so it's not like our enemies are skewing the poll. In fact, Russia and China were included in the poll (not Iran), and they both prefer Obama over McCain (although the majority voted "No Difference" in Russia). So basically, all of our allies (the people who have a vested interest in our country) want Obama. Bottom line, no country polled favored McCain over Obama. Here's the list of countries polled: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Panama, the Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Turkey, the UAE and the UK. Re: If the election was held today
I think the real question is whether or not all of the Obama supporters actually turn up to vote. I have this idea of all of these college kids being all psyched for Obama and none of them actually putting down the joint long enough to hit the polls. Obama's supporters seem to be a louder, more fervent sort but I'm not sure that is going to translate into a victory. It will definitely be interesting...

I mean there are ~72 million registered Democrats and ~55 million registered Republicans and ~42 million independents registered. It's always about turn out which is why you'll never see Republicans agree to moving election day to a weekend instead of the first Tuesday of November. |
Re: If the election was held today
I don't think there's any reason to believe that voters on either side won't turn out. The electorate has never been more energized. The Dems had record turnouts in nearly every Primary contest, and I think it will continue during the General.
I must say, Palin has energized the GOP base in a way that no one -- and I mean no one could have possibly imagined. And I think they will see a record turnout on their side as well. |

You're right, dude. But there's something about this year -- disagree with the candidates all you want, but people are engaged and eager to vote. Both sides are stepping up their ground efforts to get people to the polls. It's going to be crazy on Nov. 4th. I would like to see us go to a system similiar to that of Oregon. After this election, I think we're going to see some changes in that direction. |

I heard this on Fox radio yesterday, don't remember the source. Of new voters, those registered within the last 2 years were split 47% Obama / 44% McCain. I would've expected a bigger advantage to Obama here. Normally new voters are younger and lean more Dem. (They usually wisen up once they get decent paying jobs and look at their taxes) :) |

Most decent paying jobs are under 100 grand, and Obama is lowering taxes for most Americans. More than McCain. Obama is raising taxes for the super rich, over 600k. And yes, if online voting got passed, I would totally take advantage of it, but it would be a huge disadvantage for the Republicans, and there's that part of me that still thinks that people too lazy to get to a polling place during voting hours probably shouldn't be allowed to have a vote counted. |

I'm actually happy to see as many votes as there is for McCain. We all know the DC area is mainly dems...so mccain to be making this good a showing, that's a good sign for the election. In no way am I claiming that this information is mine or that I know the original sender. My mother forewarded this to me earlier today and I believe that it provides a simple explanation on each candidates views. Of coarse you have to dig deeper into each issue to get a full understaning of why each candidate supports or opposes a certain issue. Some issues are not as simple as yes or no answers, but this email makes is seem like there are.

If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. Re: If the election was held today
McCain.
- Obama's healthcare plan, while noble, has no chance of getting put in place. Sometimes reality has to trump vision. - Obama's platform for bringing the troops home from Iraq now is kind of losing steam, given that Bush and Petraeus have started setting the stage for pulling troops out. - I'd rather have McCain in charge of our military than Obama. - I'm in danger of getting hit by the alternative minimum tax sometime within this upcoming presidential term, and McCain is the only one suggesting we do away with it. That will mean a difference of several thousand bucks a year for me and my family. And yes, at least a portion of everyone's vote is selfish! - Alternative energy is great and should be pursued, but I see no reason why we shouldn't use our own petroleum resources immediately. Drilling now makes sense, in conjunction with the search for other energy sources. It's not like drilling precludes us from also investing in other sources. - McCain's economic and tax ideas make more sense. History shows tax revenue collected by the federal government is generally higher when policies similar to McCain's are put in place. - Obama wants to stop jobs from being shifted overseas, yet he wants to raise taxes on businesses. Um, hello. The reason companies ship the jobs overseas in the first place is because the labor costs are way cheaper. If you increase taxes on them here in this country you're just adding more weight to that burden. You're actually incenting them to headquarter themselves elsewhere.
Basically my feelings in a nutshell as well. I'm no fan of McCain and I have my issues with him. My vote for him, however, is more a case of "choosing the lesser of two evils." Which is what I did last election. And the one before that. In fact I can't remember a candidate that I truly, genuinely supported as much as I just didn't like the other guy. I guess I vote out of spite ;) |
