Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
he can't hold the ball or kick it. this isn't the first week for his antics. but for now we're stuck with him so Let's murder the browns next week plus its a 4:00 game so we can all be nice and drunk and fired up for kickoff.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Give Brooks some time. I mean what if we release he him and he makes 7 pro bowls. I'm just saying I'm not real concerned about Brooks honestly. We have bigger issues.
I don't think anything else needs to be said. Another horrible game from him that directly led to our loss today. Unacceptable.
He certainly didn't help but I wouldn't say he "directly" led to us losing. There were many factors that led to us losing. He was one of many. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Whilst it would be great to give Brooks time, he is hurting us BADLY right now. Just check the stats on NFL.com, in both gross and net punting he ranks 33rd in the league (THIRTY THIRD!!! in a 32 team league!), so not only is he the leagues worst regular punter, but theres been a team thats had 2 better than him! ... and that was before todays nightmare.
Special teams overall scares me, another KO out of bounds from Suisham, A.R.E and his 6.8 punt return avg is not gonna cut it, the poor punting, giving up 2 return TDs already. Rocks play and Suishams FG kicking are bright spots in an area that is sorely lacking them. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
we need to cut the punter and the kicker
What? Why cut Suisham? He's been a bright spot all season and made his only attempts this week. Instead of cutting him how about not expecting him to angle his kickoffs or squib them when the KOcoverage unit is playing really well. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
suisham is the man,i'd never cut him.eventually brooks will be better.he's not the reason the skins lost today, turnovers are.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Brooks is NOT the reason we lost this game, obviously.
Turnovers are. Defense was lights out. Offense was fairly productive and solid without those turnovers. Punting was horrible. Can't really fix turnovers, you can fix punting. 33rd punter in a 32 team league is extremely laughable, that's all I'm saying. I'll be the first to congratulate Brooks if he even makes the top 15 of all punters by the end of the year, I just don't see it happening. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
I agree about it being a quick fix and Frost getting ran out.
I don't mean to say you're a bad poster, I am bit frustrated with the negativity, and losing doesn't help. My apologies.
No apologies necessary I hate the negativity just as much as you do! I just figured it was about time to address the Brooks issue, mainly because I thought our team was great otherwise! |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Our punt/kick coverage was awful all day- Dante Hall had some great returns.
Randle El doesn't look too hot on punt returns either. Suisham Brooks has been miserable. To say "give him time" doesn't really fly with me. In the NFL you don't get time to develop as a punter. You either do it or you don't. And he isn't. At the very least we need to bring in a few other punters for workouts this week. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Where are all the Brooks apologists now? The kid is bad and they're no excuses left for him anymore. I will give him one more game, basically because there isn't very many other options, to turn it around if not he needs to go.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Our special teams overall was deplorable. Randle El has to be replaced. Durant Brooks must be cussed the hell out. He has no pressure on him at this point and has done nothing but given up 2 TD's on short punts. Zorn has to fix this problem now.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Maybe they could do like the old days, maybe the players should have a "Talk" with Brooks.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
I would not cut him yet. All we will get is some retread as a replacement and then we could be inviting problems with Suisham since brooks holds for him.
I vote for change thread title to "Cut Leigh Torrence"
Wtf was he even DOING on the field during possibly the most clutch defensive moment!?!?!? Shoot me. But F you too Brooks. Not one single good punt today and he DEFINITELY directly contributed to our loss.
I honestly don't know where Landry was on that play. Normally, that zone is all him. Thing is, we're spoiled into thinking good coverage is a right, but that one on one matchup definately favors the receiver. Torrence is a fine third corner who will get beat sometimes like he did there. Our depth in the secondary isn't great. You have the four starters who make up one of the best secondaries in the NFL, and after that, you have Smoot, Torrence, and Doughty, and they are all weak links against starting-caliber wide receivers. |

That, combined with the turnovers, is the only reason we didn't blow the Rams out of the water. I mean, not only did they not score an offensive touchdown...they weren't even close to threatening. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
I still can't believe Torrence was in in the most crucial down of the game. ALL he had to do was NOT to get beat deepIt was 3rd and 15 for god's sake . Thats the kinda crap they teach you in high school. I don't know why Smoot was not in on that play. Man I'm gonna have a long day tomarrow. Oh well I guess they should change this into the cut Brooks/ Torrence Thread

Torrence has been a solid backup and was very good in the Dallas game when Springs went down and Smoot/Rogers were in and out with cramps. To say "cut him" after one play is silly. Bottom line is, as a team, we should never have been in that position to begin with. Should we cut Samuels and Randy Thomas because our bad pass protection led to fumbles? Should we cut Pete Kendall for trying to run with that tipped pass instead of just falling on it? Come on. Everyone just calm down with this cut Torrence crap. |

I never said "cut" him I was just saying that smoot should be in. I did not know he had cramps. |

I think the punter should not be that high up in the Redskins priorities to fix the quagmire they had today.

Are you kidding me? It's one of the top priorities. Brooks has been handing teams great field position all year, he had two punts returned for td's against him because of horrible hangtime and directional punting, he botched a hold. Simply put the kid has been horrible and he needs to improve this week or he needs to be out of here. Just look at Zorn's quote after the game, “We have to improve our punting or we’re gonna be in trouble every game. Either we bring someone in to compete we get our punter — who’s a young guy — to improve.” |

I think Smoot had a groin injury |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
So if we fire Brooks....who's taking his place? Please don't say Froste. I'm not even sure if he is available but he was no better during game time. He always looked good in preseason but screwed up during the season.

Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Unless there's someone out there on the street that can do better I think you've gotta ride it out with the kid.
I don't know why Smoot was not in on that play. Man I'm gonna have a long day tomarrow.
Smoot would have lost his footing and fell into the WR for pass interference (or just not have been there at all).

We have to make a change, the skins are playing close games with a small window for error. Brooks shanks way too many, when he arguably has the easiest job in the NFL, |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Ok so who do we sign? I'm all for making a change if there's someone out there, but let's hear some possible names.

Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
as horrible as he has played i was willing to let him go through his rookie learning curve but when a team goes three and out and still gets a field goal because you only got off a 26 yard punt that is the point when i agree he is killing us and we can no longer afford to let him grow as a rookie, its unfortunate too because i think he will eventually be a good punter he certainly has the leg to do it.
What is the rokie learning curve for a punter? They snap him the ball and he punts it away so I don't see any learning curve in that. I said all along that Frost earned the spot in preseason but we let him go. Yes, Frost had shanked some punts but over the past year has improved. |
We have to make a change, the skins are playing close games with a small window for error. Brooks shanks way too many, when he arguably has the easiest job in the NFL,
It's not the easiest job in the NFL. If it were easy then there would be a glut of great punters all over the place. But the fact is there are only 32 of these jobs and there are not even enough good punters to fill them. There is no consistently good punter sitting out there on the steet right now. And if a punter comes into Redskins Park today and punts 20 straight booming 50 yard punts that doesn't mean he is going to do the same thing under game conditions for the next 10 weeks. We drafted this kid to be the punter for the next decade...lets not give up after 6 weeks and restart the parade of retreads that we have been going through for the last 15 years. And as frustrating as his kicks are those of us at the game should hold back our boos because booing him is obviously not helping him improve. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
There's a learning curve with everything. It's just naive to think that punting is a simple job. Otherwise what would explain all the rookie punters that are flops in the NFL? If it's a simple job with no learning curve, all rookie punters should make the transition to the NFL with no problem at all, right?
|

Well of corse its not that easy I just don't get a learning curve for a punter. Yes the game is faster but for the most part Brooks has not been under a ton of preasure when hitting these bad punts. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
On his show, Vinny C said that there will be a new punter this coming Sunday.
|
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
I love how people claim that punting is the easiest job in the world. There are 32 teams and how many have great punters. There are 100s of punters coming out of college every year, so every team should have a great punter according to the 'easiest job in the NFL' theory. Yet many teams are always searching for a better punter.
Right now I don't see any option but to stick with Durant and see if he can work thru it. I think coaching is a big part of it also, so maybe they need to change what they are doing or get a new coach to work with him. |

Well he's old and, from what I hear, kind of a jerk but I'd give Todd Sauerbrun a call to at least come in and compete. Or how about Ken Debauche, former Badger? He was pretty highly ranked along with Brooks in last year's draft. I don't think he's anywhere right now. |

Ok again, if there's no learning curve why don't all college punters make an easy transition to the pros? |

Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Folks,
Even if we wanted to cut Brooks, we can't....why? He's the holder. And though he screwed up one hold earlier this season, he has gotten that job down pat and Swishy is nailing everything. His field goal kicking is the one positive in special teams....and since all our games are decided by a single score, we can't risk changing that. Unfortunately, our coaches, with 2 struggling punters in preseason, didn't make the logical decision to put a backup QB as holder. They have the best hands and also provide a threat to run a Fake. This would have also given them the option to keep the best punter based on punting alone...which would make sense considering the poor quality of punting. Because of this lack of forsight by Danny Smith, we are stuck with Brooks, like it or not. I do think bringing in a punter is a good idea, but it is only "sending a message" I would be shocked if they cut Brooks...and if they did, and we start missing field goals, Danny Smith's job may be on the line since both coverage teams suck and punt return is poor and KO return is average at best. All Danny Smith can hang his hat on is Swishy's FG's. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Ok again, if there's no learning curve why don't all college punters make an easy transition to the pros?
That is one of the great mysteries of football. I can understand other positions taking a while to adjust to the faster speed of the NFL, but punter???? There is little to no difference in technique coming from college to the NFL, and assuming the blocking up front is sound, you can't blame the speed of the game. I think that it's more a mental block than anything when a young guy like Brooks struggles.
Ceratto should make a trip down under to look at Aussie rules guys. Sav Rocca is a field position weapon for Philly, and with the premium on accuracy in AR football, those guys should have great directional punting skills as well. |
Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread
Found on the JLC blog from the internet.
Dont know of accuracy Top Five Free Agent Punters 1. Jeff Feagles- UFA 2. Michael Koenen- RFA 3. Mitch Berger- UFA 4. Kyle Larson- UFA 5. Todd Sauerbrun- UFA And they better not cut Brooks if they keep another punter for 1 week...someone will pick him up...he may develop long tern |
