Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
I would love to see Fred Davis as the number two receiver in red zone situations.
|
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
The skins should try Cooley as a wideout and put either Yoder or Davis in as 6th lineman if our line cant stop the rush.
It is the same O, and D line that dominated Dallas and Philly a few weeks ago........
We dominated Philly? This is the same Philly that blitzed the crap out of Campbell? Who lost Westbrook which is the same as us losing Portis. Dominating is winning by 20 points or more. We haven't dominated anyone. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Aren't we forgetting someone? I mean what about Cooley? Cooley has not been a factor at all this year, i mean do we even throw to him anymore? I recall maybe once or twice lastnight Campbell throwing to him, but thats it. Why hasnt he been envolved more? We all no what he can do, and if he becomes more of a target year im sure it will up more things for Moss and Portis.
And im not ready yet to call Thrast or Kelly a bust yet... |
Oh srry my bad, didnt know that, dont look at the stats much lol
Nah it's cool. We do seem to forget about Cooley for long periods of time. His targets usually come all at one point in a game. Zorn's sort of bizzare (but not neccessarily bad) like that.

Alright, lol. Its frustrating at times and seem to forget who is envolved and who isn't. Ohwell lets hope we can find someone to step up, or maybe put in Davis some more |

Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
My biggest problem with the Randle El is that he dives to the ground too much, then he gets up smiling. We're vastly overpaying him for doning absolutely nothing. I call him Randle Fell because on punts that's all he does is fall down.
I think Thomas will emerge as a legit reciever next season onece he gets his growing pains out of the way we'll be fine. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Can we put the "new coach/new system" to bed for a while, please? If you want to cling to it like a security blanket, go ahead; but here are a few facts that might get in your way.
The Detroit Lions - - yes the ones that are 0-10 and have stunk out the league for the last 8 years - - also have a: 1. New offensive system (Mike Martz is gone this year) 2. Have used 4 (FOUR) different quarterbacks this year (no continuity) 3. Have only one WR worth anything. 4. Have no RB who could beat out Portis or Betts absent injuries. (maybe not even Rock?) 5. A tight end that only fantasy football geeks would be able to identify AND 6. An offensive line whose only offensive characteristic is its body odor. THOSE Detroit Lions have scored more TDs this year than the Washington Redskins. Go look it up. By Week Eleven, good players on good teams have figured out what the scheme is and how the plays need to be run and blocked. Now it's a matter of execution. The Redskins returned EVERY starter from last year's team to the squad and last year's team went to the playoffs. If you want to attribute mistakes and hiccoughs in the exhibition games to a "new coach/new system", that's fine. You can probably justify that for a few regular season games too - - maybe even the first four... But by now, that excuse has worn thin. A team coming off a playoff season and with playoff aspirations this year should have more TDs for the season than the dog-breath Detroit Lions. Period! |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Now that we are losing suddenly it's ARE's fault? Teams like Carolina, Buffalo, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and the Jets seem to be doing fine without a stud number two (or in the case of Tennessee running away with the league without a number one). An offense will never be more than the sum of its parts, and with breakdowns in the o-line and regressions in the running game, that's going to limit the receivers' ability to impact games. ARE runs the routes and works hard and is really the least of our worries right now.

Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Which is why I can't understand why everyone is directing their anger toward 3 rookies.
Well, I think a majority of the ire today is being directed at the right side of our offensive line. Which is where the ire should be drawn.
And the people who are blaming the rookies aren't blaming the rookies as much as their blaming the people who selected the rookies in the draft. Which, IMO is fair. I disagree with the people who are lumping all three rookies in as busts because they haven't contributed yet. But we have problems all over the offense, and as I said on draft day Smoot, we NEEDED to rely on these picks. We drafted heavily at a position that usually takes a while to develop. So if we couldn't rely on the starters, our offense would be in trouble. Well, here we are. And you and I both know that a lot of criticism that the team gets on this board after a loss is only offered because of the loss, and that's unfair. But win or lose, a lot of the criticism is very warranted, and we can't ignore that. |

Thanks to their defense totally sucking, they play their special teams units a lot, and that gets them in much better position to score touchdowns than our offense would be under the exact same circumstances. So in saying what you are saying, you do have to acknowledge that when you isolate the other two sides of football from the game, our offense is significantly better than theirs. Obviously. Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
I don't think the three rookies are a bust. I blame the person responsible for getting them NFL ready. Who is that? ...possibly Stan Hixon? Our WR have sucked ever since we pulled him from the college level. Does he even know how to teach a WR to run out of a cardboard box? It's his duty to make sure our WR are ready to play. He does not have to work with Moss, ARE, Thrash...they are vets. That leaves only three more right. We came into the season with six WR's. If he can't teach the Vets how to run crisp routes and get seperation then who thought he was going to take the rookies to the next level?
Sportscurmugeon, You forgot to mention Atlanta/ Miami. I know someone else mentioned them but Atlanta is starting a new QB and is throwing the ball getting TD's. I guess JC sucks also if a rookie QB in Atlanta can take a new offense to the next level and score more TD's. and lets not talk about Miami....with their "Wildcat offense" they are not even using a QB. lol. Totally eliminated one short fall on their offense. lol. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
To say our rookies are a bust right now is silly. How would you know? They really have'nt been given much of a chance to see what they can do. It's not Kellys fault he's been hurt. If you want to judge him, judge him after he's had a few games on the field under his belt. Thomas has gotten open downfield and not been thrown to according to Zorn. How many times has Davis been thrown to? I think it's more a case of them not being targeted instead of a testament to their talent.

seems like every time davis has the ball thrown his way the ball is off target.. I know that I'm not remember all of the attempts, but yeah as far as a couple people commenting on Cooley not getting the ball much, we're always having him in as an extra blocker because we know that the blitz is coming so often |

Sorry, but I only had enough bile to hurl to cover one of the really bad NFL teams and to compare their ability to score TDs with the 2008 Redskins. You are correct. The Dolphins have a new QB and a new system and seem to be handling business well. They average about 3 points a game more than the Redskins. The Falcons have a rookie QB and a new coach and they have outscored the Skins by 50 points this year. The Ravens have a rookie QB and a new coach and they have outscored the Skins by 31 points this year. This might take too long so ... Let's make a list of the teams who have scored FEWER points than the Redskins this year:
Cincy Bengals KC Chiefs Oakland Raiders Detroit Lions (more TDs but fewer total points) St Louis Rams.
That's it! That's the list!! Those five teams are all AWFUL; they are not ones who are having a bad season or ones that have had misfortune ruin their hopes for the season. Those teams STINK. And they are the only teams that have scored fewer points than the Redskins have scored in 10 games this year. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
the first drive against Dallas was fantastic. then it all went down hill. partly because of play calling. but the play calling was a direct result of our o lines inability to block anyone. thank god for Chris Samuels. he is the only consistent lineman we have. anyone that doesn't see that isn't looking hard enough. the receiver argument is a joke. it could be Jerry Rice on one side, and Charlie Taylor on the other. don't really make a difference. without time, we might as well load up with tight ends, and try power football. it might be a better option

And they are the only teams that have scored fewer points than the Redskins have scored in 10 games this year.
Remember that prior to the Steelers game, the offenses' total dominance of TOP is what allowed the defense to give up very few points. If you put stock in drive stats, the Redskins rank 22nd in Pts per drive, and 23rd in TDs per drive (and there's usually a strong correlation between those two stats obviously). We also rank 1st in interception per drive, 2nd in turnovers per drive, and 13th in yards per drive. FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Football analysis and NFL stats for the Moneyball era - Authors of Pro Football Prospectus 2008 So while we are punting far too much, we're not giving opposing offenses the short fields to kill our defense with. So our defensive numbers are VERY assisted by our "responsible" offense. We've been creating more turnovers recently, so it will be interesting to see if this improves our PPG. If it doesn't then we have a huge problem. But I definately expect it to. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Now remember the benefit that is NOT scoring. Yes, there actually is a benefit to not scoring: it's that you don't have to kick off. The Redskins rank 6th in starting field position for the defense and consequently, lead the league in punts forced per drive.
So while we make fun of the offense for not getting into the end zone, which is a problem, realize at least that Zorn is smart enough to not attempt the long FG, which is generally a worse play than going for it, make or miss it (unless time is a factor). Now, obviously, not kicking the field goals hurts us in PPG. But remember always and never forget: The goal of football is not to score as many points as you can. It's to score as many points as you can more than the other team. So the fact that our offense, even when it doesn't score, consistently helps out the defense (well, not so much of late, but that's another story) you are seeing a lot of positives effects of Zorn's offense in the low PPG number for the opponent. Now...if we could only get into that endzone... |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
The average drive against our defense starts at the 28 yard line, encompasses 26 yards, and ends in a punt more than half the time. But think about that. If an average drive against the Redskins starts at the 28 yard line, goes 26 yards (to our 46 yard line), and then ends in a punt, what kind of field position is that going to give the offense? This is an average drive for the defense.
The point is: theres a lot of hidden yardage in football that isn't seen in points per game, and it's totally misleading to compare our offense to the Lions offense. |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
GTripp0012:
You are ABSOLUTELY correct. I was not even trying to hint that the Lions' offense was equivalent to - let alone superior to - the Redskins' offense. It is NOT! There are plenty of problems regarding the Skins' offense, but the worst of the Skins' problems pales in comparison to the cesspool that is the Lions' offense. My point was that after ten games, the Skins have scored fewer TDs than the worst team in the league - - and no matter how anyone wants to parse the statistics, that cannot be a good thing. I think the Skins' offense has four strength areas:
Excellent running backs Excellent Tight End Better than average QB Good run blocking OL plus H-back.
I think the Skins' offense has three areas of weakness:
Bad pass blocking OL - particularly up the middle. Mediocre corps of WRs - not helped by the non-productivity of any rookies. Way too much "specialization" - - requiring "personnel packages" and "formation orientations" to run various plays.
Believe me, the Detroit Lions would love to have those as their only weaknesses on offense... |
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
Every team we've faced this year has either one or two Riggins type running backs (well, there's really no comparison to Riggins, but I'm just making a point). We need to draft somebody like that to help spell CP. Take a look at the Giants, Cowboys, and Steelers. I didn't hear our middle linebacker's name called out too many times in the Seattle game, and why wasn't Horton playing more?
|
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
I do think we may need to look at another WR upgrade in the offseason however I see our O line and D lines as taking priorities.

Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
If we are satisfied with the smaller speedier DE then we are set at DE. We just need to build up or bulk up or DL...the middle. We need at least one maybe two OL. I can see us picking up another WR late in the draft. It would be nice to find a nice size FB to replace Sellers, cause I just don't think Broughten is the answer. He has not been since he came. Always injured. We will need to draft a good RB in later rounds and hope he pans out for the future. Clearly SA(aka...TTB) is not the answer or they are not using him to his strengths as I have said all along. He is not a between the tackles type of RB.
|
Re: Our lack of a secondary receiver is killing us
The redskins' offensive line has a lot of slow thinkers because sometimes they're looking around for somebody to block and they let a guy zero in on JC. I think JC needs to get upset and start yelling at his blockers in the huddle. On the other hand, JC could speed up his delivery a little more.
