Guys like Landry and Moss especially are far from "average to below average"
Guys like Thomas and Kelly clearly have talent, it's simply stupid to just quit on them so suddenly. Ditto for Chris Horton Botttom line, we have several solid young players that (so long as the organization doesn't panic the way the fans do) we can build something with.
We certainly have good players. But right now there is no one on either side of the ball that can take over a game and dominate and that's why we're an average football team. On offense, hopefully in the near future Kelly and Thomas can be those types of players. But there is no one on the front 7 and you can't be a dominating defense with just a strong secondary. |

Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
I know that we wouldn't really be Redskins fans if we didn't act like we haven't won a game in 35 years and the team is comprised of Oompa Loompas. I'm not blind to the team's struggles, I'm just as upset as anyone else over our sloppy performance the past two weeks and I know there certainly are areas that need improving (go figure, every team can say the same thing). Three that stand out for me are improved special teams play, giving the young guys more playing time on offense (particularly the linemen) to build their confidence and the coaches' confidence in them, and a more stout run defense from our linebackers.
But let's step back for a minute and look at what's right with the Redskins. Perhaps better said, what we can build on. Because there actually do exists positives on this team, this team that currently holds a winning record, that has been to the playoffs two of the last three years with a win. I know it will be damn near impossible for some of you to try to look at some positives (and without being sarcastic), but they do exist. -A young QB that several thought was a top MVP candidate at the midpoint of the season. Given time and protection, he has shown he can lead the team to victories, even comeback victories -Colt "The Truth" Brennan waiting in the wings -One of the most complete running backs in the game in Clinton Portis -A steady, reliable young pass catching tight end -One of the best LT's in the game in Chris Samuels -A playmaker in Santana Moss, along with two young stud receivers who just need the time and opportunities in Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly (if you've already given up on them, I feel sorry for you) -Arguably the most underrated player in the game in London Fletcher (although, to be fair, I want to start seeing more consistency out of Blades sooner than later) -A top 5 defense -Young playmakers in the secondary-ball hawk DeAngelo Hall, lock down corner Carlos Rogers, freak of nature Laron Landry, 7th round steal Chris Horton -Young depth on the interior of the defensive line with Golston, Montgomery, and Alexander -An owner wiling to do whatever it takes for his team -A young developing OT in Stephon Heyer who should have the starting RT spot locked down for years to come by this summer, if not sooner
I have just a few bones to pick here... -- Chris Samuels when healthy is among the best offensive tackles in the game no doubt. But that's like making the same statement about Jim Lachey in 1991 -- sure he's at the top, but for how much longer? And there's no one, NO ONE waiting in the wings to take his place. Ditto for London Fletcher. -- The "playmaker" Santana Moss? When was the last time he actually made a game changing play? Against Detroit? Yeah, he's our best playmaker. And that's not saying much. Because he's had that title ever since he got here, and the Redskins have been mediocre offensively. -- Cooley. Yes, he can catch. And everybody loves calling out his name whenever the ball reaches his hands. But is that it? He's caugh one touchdown this year, and that was from a trick play back in week 5. He just doesn't find the endzone enough. -- Laron Landry. He's hardly been a 'freak of nature' this season. He makes up one of the best secondaries in the league, no question. But as an individual, he's not exactly scaring the pants off of anyone. In fact, the one highlight reel he's famous for in the 2008 season is getting jacked up by Brandon Jacobs. -- Golston, Montgomery, and Alexander at DT. Okay, solid pickups late in the draft when we never expected it, but still, no blue-chip difference makers here. Look at the best teams in the league right now -- all of them have a monster somewhere at the D-line. We've got nobody close to that label here. And there's nobody in the pipeline either. So I hate to piss all over this positive thread, but while some of the things you've mentioned here make good arguments for looking to the bright side, none of this changes the fact that we are a franchise that just can't seem to escape from the middle of the pack. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
All good points Beem.
Somebody, or a group of them in "7 figure" salary range is going to have to figure out the formula to break out of the pack............soon, I hope |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Well where to start.....there's so much to mention:
We have one of the best WR tandems in ARE and Thrash. Almost arguably the two best Tackles in the league in Samuels and Jansen who will be staples in the offense for years to come. If not the best then close to it in Smoot as CB and Springs brings a lively Vetran factor to the defense. Oh and how could I forget the two best kickers in the league in Suisham and Plackemeier. Certainly I hope they will help hold down the fort for years to come with their abiliby to come up big in clutch situations. ...and last but not least...whoever comes up with their magnificant game plan week in and week out should not only get a raise but be promoted. Whoever this individual is should have been interviewed as head coach during our Head Coach Search. ;) P.S.....I totally almost forgot the future of this team Jason Taylor. WOW. I don't think his motor ever stops. He is one constant machine in motion. Even the coach's have a hard time taking him out of the game. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Ok honestly I'm getting tired of other teams raiding our Practice Squad. Last week we lost someone and this week the Bears have taken our only tall WR that has not screwed up (only cause he has not been on the field) Devin Aromashodu. I think we need to start looking at all these other teams practice squads and find some O-Linemen and D-Linemen. Apparently it's ok to steal from another teams practice squad only to put them on your own practice squad. So I say lets get to it and look to our future now.
Then we can sign CJ in this off season. LOL. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Listen,All the talk about playoffs.colt brennan and so on is all just talk. Im a die-hard skins fan but i rather not lie to myself (I think thats how you get hurt) No look if you think about it redskins have not played well all season in the begining we were executing and etc. but we never showed the fans that we we guarantees to win the next game. Everygame with the redskins is a iffy 4th quater decicion. As far as the playoffs i hope so yeah everyone hopes so. but it all starts with cincy right now i dont even think we could be detroit, also the west coast offence is not going to work and zorns playcalling isnt going to work with the injuries on the O line, everyone must just hope we can pull these last games out,but we have ALOT to work on this offseason. including another WR,
WE NEED TO USE EVERY OPTION WE HAD SELLERS,MOSS,KELLY,THOMAS,RANDEL EL, EVERYTHING |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Dre Moore on Tampa's practice squad. We need to get him asap. Had alot of sacks at MD, is 6-4 315, was Tampa's 4th round pick and was the most athletic tackle at the combine. Ran a 4.88 40ytd.

QUOTE] Hey stop stealing my analysis!!! LOL. :smashfrea "Defensive Line - I think our interior d-line has quietly underperformed this season. With Carter and Jason Taylor's lack of production, people forget that the interior tackles haven't done much either. While Golston and Montgomery are good young talents, we need a dominant DT that can push the line. Good defensive units like Minny (the Williamses), NYG (Coefield), Titans (Haynesworth), and Baltimore (Ngata) have strong DTs that push the line, helping the outside rushers get to the QB. I wouldn't mind for the team (if the salary cap permits it) going after someone like Haynesworth." I think the team focused too much on pass rushers and forgot to deal with the DTs. Once again, the best pass rushers won't matter if you don't have DTs that can push the offensive line and disrupt both the pass and the run. Griffin is old and gets hurt, and both Golston and Montgomery are not cutting it. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Simply put, you can't stop teams in the NFC East from running like we have all year without a great run defending defensive line. Which we have. Now, neither Golston or Griffin is much of a pass rushing threat from the interior. In today's game, I think you need to have dual purpose defensive tackles.
I also continue to feel that if we layed off the blitz more, which forces guys to shoot at certain gaps, we could get more sacks. Baltimore used a lot of max protect against us, so perhaps we'll destroy the Cincinnati OL. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Our blitzes don't work (see Giants game) and rushing just the front four gives the opposing QBs an eternity to throw.
Well, if the blitzes don't work, like you and I both believe, then rushing four wouldn't give them any more time to throw.
I don't know if you caught the stat that Al Michaels threw out that basically said that the Redskins came into the game with with 99 blitzes of 6 or more people, tops in the league. But they only have 6 sacks on those plays (6%). So if 94 percent of the time we are blitzing the house we're NOT getting a sack, we're obviously not impeding what they like to do nearly enough. I mean, yeah, we're forcing the ball out fast, and against bad offenses (St. Louis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh) that can be enough, but if our front four can get there almost as fast as we can with six guys, then we should basically never be blitzing. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Do any of our experts have an opinion HB Blades , seems to me his is playing great.
Blades is really getting killed against TEs. We were number one in the NFL against defending TEs when Doughty, Horton, and Washington had them. But the last two weeks, teams are realizing that Blades will buy a play fake and you can slip Kevin Boss or Todd Heap out wide open. This is what happened on that 4th down play.
He's great against the run though. Plays much more aggressively than McIntosh and hits hard for a guy his size. |

Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Redskins Sacks:
Andre Carter 3 Demetric Evans 3 Rocky McIntosh 2.5 Anthony Montgomery 2 Kedric Golston 2 Lorenzo Alexander 2 Jason Taylor 1 Corneilius Griffin 1 Chris Wilson 1 Chris Horton 1 LaRon Landry 0.5 Redskins who have double digit pressures: Andre Carter 31 Demetric Evans 13 Anthony Montgomery 11 London Fletcher 10 Redskins with 3 or more hits on QB Demetric Evans 4 Andre Carter 3 Corneilius Griffin 3 Redskins with 2 or more batted passes Jason Taylor 7 Andre Carter 2 Demetric Evans 2 No player has been hurt more by the increased blitzing than Andre Carter, whose 31 pressures would have produced AT LEAST ten sacks if not for all the guys directly in the face of the QB and the hot routes by the WRs. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Phillip Daniels '07: 2.5 sacks, no hits on QB, 4 pressures in 16 games
Demetric Evans '08: 3 sacks, 4 hits on QB, 13 pressures in 13 games Anthony Montgomery '07: 0.5 sacks, 4 hits on QB, 2 pressures Anthony Montgomery '08: 2 sacks, 2 hits on QB, 11 pressures Corneilius Griffin '07: 2.5 sacks, 7 hits on QB, 5 pressures Corneilius Griffin '08: 1 sack, 3 hits on QB, 8 pressures What I'm saying is that we've seen measureable upgrade at two positions on the DL over last year, some decline at DT with Griffin, and Carter's producing at his normal level, but the sacks stats are very skewed by Blache's schemes. Don't be fooled here: our DL is better than it was last year. The small decline on defense is somewhat schematic, but a lot of it is in the back seven. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
GTripp:
The reason I will stop short of saying that the Skins have a great run defensive line is what happenbed to that line in the fourth quarter of the Dallas game and the fourth quarter of the Baltimore game. When the Skins needed a stop in both of those games to have a shot to win the game AND when the offense needed to run the ball down the Skins throat - - the offense did just that. Both teams lined up and ran right at the defensive line and pushed them around. ON just those two drives - - with the game in the balance - - I think the offense ran the ball 20 times and never had to punt the ball. That does not happen to great defensive lines. I agree that the Skins' DL is better against the run than it is at pressuring the passer, but it is not a great defensive line against the run. |

It seems like there are more than a few occassions that the linemen steer the running backs toward the linebackers and the linebackers just don't make the play |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Positives:
Great *young* secondary Campbell McIntosh Youthful depth at WR Youthful depth at DE/DT and LB Other than that, I don't really see any other positives for us beyond this season. Sure we've got talent in places, but most are aging, and their talent will diminish quickly -- I wouldn't call them positives. Of the youth we have on the DLine, it's doubtful any of them will be world-beaters. But, they could be excellent backups if they stay with the team. Overall, I think we're in good shape. If we could trade down in the draft, and pickup some linemen in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, it would be a great improvement. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
We have all of the pieces, we just don't friggin execute. Its not the coach, its not the QB, it is the execution of the offensive and special teams units.

There are plenty of threads where all we do is bitch and moan about all that is wrong with the Redskins. This one was designed to look at some of the positives and things that we have that we can build on. We're all frustrated and rightfully so but we can't simply look at the glass fully empty. If you're unable to then fine (sorry you're incapable) but don't waste your negative energies on this thread.

Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Mr. Redskin is syntactically and grammatically challenged  but his point about the absolute irrelevance of "Redskins profitability" is absolutely correct. Citing that as a "success" or "strength" of the Redskins organization is an important point for bankers who are considering lending Danny Boy some more money so he can buy up a couple more radio stations or an amusement park somewhere. For people who pay to get into games and buy Skins' gear, it is irrelevant at the very best. Redskin fans ought to want Super Bowl Trophies and parades - - while the team barely breaks even - - far more than a AAA credit rating for Danny Boy. :biggthump
Those who think the profitability thing is important probably cannot wait for the annual evaluation by Forbes Magazine listing the putative value that they put on sports franchises so they can see the Redskins at or near the top of the list. I know that is always a big day on the calendar for me. :party-smi And don't forget that big ranking in Fortune Magazine when they list the richest people in the world and we all get to see Danny Boy on the list. Gives me goosebumps every time it happens. Now, Mr. Redskin is wrong to say there is nothing right with this team. There are plenty of things to build on: 1. Good young QB. 2. One very good RB and a very good back-up RB. 3. One very good TE - - and a rookie TE who was really good in college but who hasn't yet shown anything at the NFL level. 4. Good defensive ends. 5. A very good MLB. 6. Two young OLBs who might actually learn how to play their position instead of trying to rely on "athleticism" to make every play. 7. One good young CB (Rogers), one physically talented young CB (Hall) and several able veteran CBs. 8. One excellent and one very good safety. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
Well I'm gonna ignore the recent negativity on this thread and just throw my two cents in regarding the thread title.
When you look at two football teams lined up pre-snap, 11 on 11, what should be right with a team should start at the core- the front lines on both sides- and be built around that. Unfortunately we don't have that, at least as far as offense is concerned. However, as SportsCurmudgeon points out, we have some very solid complimentary pieces. I don't think we're too far off from taking this pretty average team to pretty good. We need to build up the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, particularly offense. But we've got pass catchers, all of whom are under 30 (thrash aside), a pair of very good backs, a solid young QB, a monster FB, and a damn good good defense. Fix the o-line up and get more comfortable in WCO, and we could contend. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
I'm finding as I sort out the Redskins-Ravens game, that the problem is not that we're out-personneled on the front five or front four (although, obviously, sans Samuels and Jansen this is a totally different issue), but that our backs are horrible at finding the guy they are supposed to block. The schemes are effective enough to work, but pass blocking on passing downs becomes a counting game so often, and the back is supposed to block the inside guy if he's got too many people to pick up, BUT a lot of times, we have enough guys to pick it up, and the backs go inside anyway.
This becomes a huge problem when Sellers/Portis DOESN'T think we have the right protection to pick up the blitz (actually a 4 man rush in many cases), but Campbell/the receivers counts the rushers and DOES think it's going to be picked up. It's not that Campbell isn't looking to urgently getting the ball out, it's that he's got to allow the routes to develop, and he has no idea he's about to be killed from his blindside. The result is a potential for turnovers. And it's not the fault of the offensive line, though I'm not sure whether it would kill Randy Thomas to help Jansen if no ones coming. We didn't extend his contract so he and Rabach could stand there. The main point here is that we would actually be better off if the defense would send more than we could pick up. Because then Campbell would know that he's responsible for the outside guy, and he's athletic enough to evade him. But he has to know that he's not going to get blocked to do so. |
Re: What Is RIGHT with the Redskins?
So when people say "we need to draft offensive lineman", what they really mean is that "we have to do a better job of protecting the QB". Because we do a piss poor job of the latter, but not always because of the former.
