Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
Here is where Obama is making points with me. Ignoring policy debates and politics in general the one thing that killed me about Bush's administration, and most politicians in general, is that when they did screw up (and they all do) they never owned up to it. I don't know why it is so hard for politicians to say "yeah we f'ed that up". A lot of the stuff anchoring Bush was smaller stuff that they could have diffused with honesty and openess. Instead it was always cloak and dagger/stay on message. What is it with these people? It's like they have no clue about actual human social patterns. Seriously, they all need to take a cue from the Simpson and appoint a Secretary of keepin' it real. Looks like Obama is trying.
I know I'm in the minority but I really could care less if my leader says "I screwed up". We already know. You're forgiven. Now fix it. Hopefully, this will be the last time we hear "Sorry" even if he does truly seem to be genuine. He's doing a good job, he'll continue to need the confidence of the American people. I don't think calling yourself out is an effective tool for a leader. |

Actually I agree. Personally I don't much care whether they do or not as it applies to my own feelings. I just know basic human social patterns indicate that from a logical and practical standpoint it is rarely if ever better to obscure the truth in these types of situations. They get points back when they say the screwed up from lots of people. Why they don't see this is baffling. It actually makes you wonder how many things go on that we never know about. I guess it'd have to be a pretty good amount of situations they successfully keep obscured to overcome the obvious and tremendous negativity they get whenever they are discovered. |
Re: Updated: Daschle Withdraws; Didn't these guys have to fill out an application?
If you don't/can't say "I screwed up" how can you have a conversation about how to rectify the problem?

I disagree, I believe that it is imperative that a leader have integrity and take responsibility for his/her actions. Somebody is going to find out, you might as well own up to it. It is ok to call yourself out, but if you are calling yourself out over the same mistake more than once, then you are showing that you have a weakness about you. In that case you may not want to own up to it, but by then you have already proven that you are seriously flawed as a leader and taking ownership no longer matters. |

Well there's a difference between saying it and meaning it. In either case, whether you openly admit it or not, meaning and knowing it is more important than saying it to me. I would guess there are plenty of times that politicians know they screwed up and don't say it. Telling everyone just helps make them feel better. |

True true, and of course you can't say I screwed up all the time or you'll lose creditability. So long as people are being held accountable and the days of "I don't know," "I don't recall," "heck of a job," "so what?" are behind us I'm a happy camper. |

We'll see how good he is now that he's a target of the media and not their darling. Seeing how a lot of his choices have had to drop out I think the honey-moon is over. Bush thought that he could do the same thing with Meyers. Obama is going to learn the same way W did.

A lot of his choices? He's appointed at least a dozen or more cabinet members and many more have been hired, and you bring up two? And please don't compare Daschle with Harriet Meyers. |

First off your right they will quit and no one worth a damb will take the job with those pay restrictions. Second they did not set their pay the stock holders and board members voted for their pay. Its called a contract and if the board made that bad of a choice and drew up that bad of a deal its the boards fault. WOW, why not the Obama admit that they want to take over the banking so they can control all our dam money. They have allready talked about taking over our 401k plans and I'm sure they can f that up as bad as SS so we have nothing left and have to beg them for all our needs. |

First of those mofo won't easily find jobs outside the financial industry, certainly not in these current economic times and with "previous employer failed" on their resume. Secondly corporate boards do whatever the CEO tells them 90% of the time. Rubber stamping CEO proposals is expected in most cases especially if the CEO owns a large number of voting shares in the company. A board member's duties include giving the CEO phat bonuses, during good times, and espouse the value of "being able to offer competitive wages to keep their best people" during the bad times. They have to do and say those sort of things because they got on the board due to The Corporate Board Buddy System™ which mandates you have great back scratching skills and the ability not to get caught with your pants down. Finally they're getting bailout money so your JT analogy is worthless. If they don't want the money they can go pay their CEO whatever they like and go out of business in the process. Their is a price to pay for getting baildout money. No one likes seeing a friend they just lent $500 because they "needed it" and then see them sporting a new iPod the next day. You ain't getting a goddamn iPod on my dime mofo. No sir. |

The group, he added, should also "understand insurgency" in implementing efforts to offer alternatives. "Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban," Sessions said during a meeting yesterday with Hotline editors. "And that is that they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person's entire processes. And these Taliban -- I'm not trying to say the Republican Party is the Taliban. No, that's not what we're saying. I'm saying an example of how you go about [sic] is to change a person from their messaging to their operations to their frontline message. If the CEO has been at the company longer than the board members then he typically sets his own pay, proposes his own compensation to the board and bob is your uncle there's money for his new boat. If the CEO is ousted from the company (a.l.a. Carly Fiorina) they'll have friends on the board who are willing to violate company policy and give out 21 million severance pay. What about Fiorina's replacement you ask? He's the CEO, Chairman of the Board, and President of HP. Do you know what that means? When he replaced a fired CEO he managed to get himself "elected" by the board to lead the board. This is typically how shit goes down man. I think pay and bonuses should be voted on by the shareholders. If they want to give their CEO 1 billion dollars in pay good for them. Just rmemeber though who to ask for a handout when the tough times hit. The CEO might be willing to lend you 500 million if you ask him nicely. |

No, that's not the saddest thing I've ever seen. Seeing Hillary getting thrown under the bus was sad. Having the Congress bitch about bad equipment and blame the deaths of soldiers on the Executive Branch was sad. Seeing how they're in charge of appropriating the equipment, it is sad seeing so-called leaders play politics with people's lives. The country as a whole choose to change leadership. If you're goint to try to lead don't talk about how you want the stimulus to be 100% tax cut and at least understand basic economics. With any luck they can pull blue dogs like the Dems used to pull moderates.
Well, technically they did win. |

So did a lof of other Congressmen and Senators. It doesn't matter if they won if they can't get they're agenda off the ground. |
The country as a whole didn't choose to change. I didn't vote. Millions of people voted for McCain. My friend voted for Brett Favre. Obama may have won by a comfortable margin but he didn't have a Reagan style blowout. Yeah, you can say that now. Oh we won the election you can just be quiet. The country as a whole DID vote for change whatever change represents to you is a different story. The fact that you didn't vote is your problem, yea. More power to the GOP if they can sway the blue dogs. They're 77 seats down and there are 47 blue dogs which means they need 39 blue dog votes to get their way. Good luck to them because by all accounts the house GOP is irrelevant. |
Just like Bush was elected 4 years ago by the "country as a whole" and the Democrats followed his lead, or the House went Republican by the "country as a whole" with the "Contract with America period" and the Democrats followed their lead.
Whatever, it is the way our system works and I understand that, but please then don't say you are changing anything in DC, all you are doing is the same thing that has gone on for the last 40 years.
When you have 36 GOP senators who don't believe in government spending as a means of economic recovery and threaten to filibuster the stimulus bill WTF are we going to talk about? They can play their games, if was Obama I would tell them go eat a hogmog and have them filibuster the bill. |
