This could be a breath of fresh air in the return game but I am not getting exicited given that we signed Jerome Mathis a pro bowl returner last offseason and he was cut before training camp.

Everything I've read about him uses the same adjectives...exciting...electrifying. I think Sellers went to the CFL from juco and then played for us, went to Cleveland?, and then we got him back. Not really sure.

Thanks to everyone who provided links to articles and videos on Dorsey. He looks like he could be a great fit for our return game. He reminds me of Sproels, but thats probably just the burgundy and gold glasses blinding me to the truth that he's just our most recent FA mancrushwho will likely never make the active roster. its a nice pickup. maybe he can push some of our own guys to improve, but i cant see us making room for Dorsey, Cartwright, and Randel El on the roster. ARE is virtually uncuttable due to his cap figure and Cartwright is too much of a leader on this team. I really cant see Dorsey making the roster over Rock.

If he can only return punts, he won't make the team. But if he can be that "change of pace" back to Portis, he has a shot. He had a pretty good average in the CFL but it doesn't look like he had that many rushes each year. We had a rb in camp a couple of years ago from the CFL, Jesse something I think, he was great in the CFL....didn't make it past preseason with us. I'll take the seat Matty. I don't care what the cost. Just send the bill to 44ever, he's LOADED!

Re: News from up North
Why they would scour the CFL for a return man...one that is already 3 years into his professional career at that. Why bring in a 4th RB to compete for the return job already held by the 3rd RB unless you are planning on getting rid of him or promote him. In that case some other RB might be out via trade. I could add a couple of more things but I believe that my next sentence will better explain my position.

Right now the Skins should be posturing for the draft (they claim to want more picks) not just adding camp bodies. So either somebody believes that he is a viable replacement to a player or 2. Or somebody has their head up their ass. I believe that this guy is a camp body, but why add one now? There will be plenty of time for that later, especially after the draft.

Why this guy and why now? I understand the pickup of the Kicker, but this doesn't make sense yet.
i think dorsey is more than just camp filler. hes the best special teamer in cfl so i hope he atleast translate to a good special teamer with the skins. cartwright is a solid kick returner but hes nothing special and we all know we need help at returning punts and thats where dorsey comes in. also he can catch the ball pretty well out of the backfield.

jesse lumsden and he still is great in the cfl. we just didn't need him and hes not a return man. if betts went down in preseason we would of kept him.

Re: News from up North

The skins have made a ton of these tiny moves and they're usually stupid. however a new punt returner would be cool.it would also make a lot more sense to throw all of the players on the team we have moss, thomas, hall back there and see how they do cause none of them could possibley do worse then ARE. then give the job to whoevers good at it because these guys are already fast and can play in the nfl. that would also be an amazingly progressive solution.

why can't you see us carrying dorsey, are, and cartwright? we carried 7 rookies who didn't have a big imapct on the field if any impact at all so why couldn't the skins carry a 4th rb and another return man that atleast could have an impact in the return game?

IMO a back that small will get killed, literally, behind our line unless we upgrade at least two spots i.e. RT and G/C.

... i mean CP was originally a speed/slash back, obviously bigger than this kid Dorsey, but transformed himself into a bruiser to fit our running game. Portis is a special talent w/ pretty staggering physical gifts... this kid won't be able to handle getting gang-tackled by half a dozen brutes once he crosses the LOS.

... i say until the o-line gets a whole lot quicker, younger and bigger we'd be smarter to invest in a bruiser like B. Jacobs if we're going to do anything @ RB this year.

we carried 7 rookies in a PR move to make Cerrato look good. we let Billy McMullen go and kept Malcom Kelly on the active roster, even though our doctors reportedly recommended IRing him. We let Marcus Mason go when he was essentially MVP of the NFL in preseason because we needed roster spots for our 10 draft picks.

I dont care how electrifying this guy is in camp and/or preseason, hes not going to make the active roster unless we trade Cartwright, ARE, or Betts... just my opinion though.

So I talked to my cousin who's been a scout, among other things, for the CFL and his take is that Dorsey is exciting and can give you the occasional big play, but he doesn't think he really has the size nor speed to make up for the lack of size to make it in the NFL.

He liked Chris Wilson when we signed him, thought he'd easily make the team and could be an impact player but he's not as high on Dorsey...for what it's worth
Well, NFL (or maybe it's CFL) rules state that if any NFL team wants to sign a CFL player currently under contract to a CFL team to potentially add to their 2009 roster, they have to do it by the end of next week. I think maybe February 15th is the deadline.

That's why you see so many CFL players being signed around this time.

Whatever interest they have on him, they had to act on it now.
I was not aware of that rule. That would suck in the business world.

Well..you know...being a scout in the CFL doesn't really translate well to being a scout in the NFL. How many scouts in the CFL have made it in the NFL..........blah...blah...blah. I think your cousin is probably right. And John Palermo was on Redskin Nation and talked about Wilson having a big upside and was kinda put on the backshelf due to the signing of JT.

Thanks for that insight.

I appreciate that perspective because it sounds in line with what a Canadian prospect would bring to an NFL team in just one year, even if he is setting the CFL ablaze.

Thanks for the dream-free anaylsis.

On the other hand, being a CFL scout makes one infinitely more qualified than the average redskins fan posting on a message board. :)

i agree, but i wonder what your cousin would think about Rock Cartwright or Darren Sproels if they were in the CFL... both small guys that really arent that exceptionally fast. I'm not going to get excited about this move yet, but i don't think its a BAD move on the part of the skins either. Its nice to see they are exploring all their options and actively taking steps to improve the team. If we were sitting around doing absolutely nothing, completely content with our roster, then i would be irritated.

I see your point, but the size isn't only about height. It's also about the fact that he barely can clear 170 lbs. Sproles is over 180, and Rock over 210

Don't be a "Johnny come LATLEY" 44. :) I wish Dorsey all the best. It would be great if he turns out to be a "Sproles like" player, but as SS says, at 170 pounds, how much contact can he take? Anyone remember how much Joe Washington weighed?

When has Vinny ever kept 4 RB's? Even last year when several people (myself included) thought that we should probably keep Derrick Mason, we didn't. If Dorsey makes it, then either Rock or Betts are out of here.

don't remember JW weight but Desmond Howard was around 180 Ibs SB mvp punt returner. He was a little heavier but also a little taller at 5'10

I don't think for a minute he would be a Sproles. What does SS know anyway:)

Sproles is an inch shorter than Dorsey but about 10 lbs heavier. Pretty similar.

My prediction is Dorsey will be outta here before training camp.

Re: News from up North

Well like Angry said, I can't see them keeping 4 RB's. If the guy is really, really good on punt returns, and the coaches are comfortable enough with Rock being a back-up to Portis, they could always trade Betts. Personally I like Betts and think he should get alot more playing time, but if they're not going to use him and this guy can return punts better than ARE, ha-ha, and compliment Portis at RB.........
