Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
It's been a bizarre few days for Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith, considered by most to be a top five pick. Immediately before the second group of offensive linemen were about to start their workout, an official announcement was made stating Smith had left the combine headquarters unannounced. After a long search, Smith was found 30 minutes before the workout began. The announcement went on to say Smith and his agent were giving conflicting stories as to the reason of his disappearance. Sources later said Smith's interviews with teams have been going horribly. He's been inappropriately dressed and has been giving a number of conflicting statements as to why he was choosing not to workout at the combine. Several offensive line coaches have already suggested Smith be removed from their team's draft board and there's no doubt his draft stock is falling.

Thanks for the link Smoot! Informative stuff. Definitely looks like A. Smith and H. Johnson are headed in the wrong direction.

Ok does anybody know whether our FO has met w/ Andre Smith and if anything came out of it?

Yeah, we met with him earlier in the week. No idea what came out of it. |

Well I'd be extremely interested to know... where's the inside info guys? I know Samuels also came from Alabama so does anyone know whether these two have met at school functions, etc? Would be very cool if Samuels had an opinion of Smith's character and potential. |

Good luck finding out specifically what the Skins think about him. No one wants to tip their hand as far as their player evaluation right now. You'll hear a lot of "anonymous sources" being quoted however. |

Have know clue. But news out of the combine today wasn't very good. Per SI.com Notes It's been a bizarre few days for Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith, considered by most to be a top five pick. Immediately before the second group of offensive linemen were about to start their workout, an official announcement was made stating Smith had left the combine headquarters unannounced. Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Goat, I know you were interested in team interviews of Andre Smith. The kid is butchering his future right now apparently:
SMITH’S STOCK TAKING A HIT FOR REASONS UNRELATED TO WORKOUT Posted by Mike Florio on February 21, 2009, 9:25 p.m. As if the bizarre departure of Alabama tackle Andre Smith from Indianapolis didn’t raise enough questions about his pro prospects, some of the things Smith did and said in Indy might have done even more damage. According to Tony Pauline of SI.com, Smith had a bad round of interviews on Friday. “Smith’s interviews with teams have been going horribly,” Pauline reports. “He’s been inappropriately dressed and has been giving a number of conflicting statements as to why he was choosing not to workout at the combine. Several offensive line coaches have already suggested Smith be removed from their team’s draft board and there’s no doubt his draft stock is falling.” Though high-end tackles create a lower percentage of busts than positions like quarterback and receiver, few tackles have had such a bad experience at the Scouting Combine. As a result, anyone who recommends that the team use a high first-round pick on Smith needs to have a high degree of job security — or needs to be right. |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
What is up with this guy? It sounds like he's mentally falling apart.

Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Man, one wrong word and you go from a can't miss prospect to a bum who can't play ball. I know teams want to pick a starter with their first round pick but to dump the guy because his interviews were inconsistent, are they looking for priests or NFL players. I think the combine gets too much emphasis. But thats good news for us, we can pick him up because the kid canplay, and play well.

Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Charley Casserly ripped him, supposedly he skipped the combine to go to 2 other workouts and waited till the last minute to inform the combine people. Charley basically said BS, why wait till the last minute, he said his agent took the bullet for him.

Not sure which thread I sld post it up but I guess here is fine due to the comment below:
- Orakpo said that the Redskins talked to him about being a SAM (strong-side) linebacker. Redskins Tidbits via PreDraft/Twitter - Redskins Insider Perhaps Orakpo is in Redskins' plans? |
Re: Database Update: Consensus Projections, DE, OT, and LB ranking links
Andre Smith still performs on the field. Right now he's just a little immature and maybe a bit scatterbrained, but he's not a problem child running amok of the law

For any Terps fans/alumni, did you guys see Heyward-Bey's 40 time? Glad to see he's doing well. Makes me wish we had picked up just one receiver last year and picked him up this year. Oh well.

Not 100% positive, but I believe that in addition to the aforementioned Andre Smith and Brian Orakpo we also met with Jarron Gilbert, Alex Mack, and Max Unger this weekend

Good stuff. I said it before, with the depth at D-line/O-line/LB in this draft, it would be ideal IMO to trade down for multiple picks. |

Detroit is the team the Skins (and everyone else) should be hoping to get a call from. If Detroit wanted to move up for someone like Orakpo ... or a QB if they pass on Stafford for some reason ... then we could squeeze them for picks 20, 65, and 129. That works by the value chart (within 7 points ... which would be a low 7th if you wanted to make it totally even). Probably would mean passing on a tackle, but you could then target a guy like Unger at 20. |

Or Alex Mack. Detroit might go for it since they need a QB and o-line help. Of course as you say they might want someone like Orakpo too with such a bad defense and Swartz being a defensive minded coach. I think this would be our best scenario. |

I feel that there is enough o-lineman talent this year that we could pick up a good tackle or guard in the lower part of the first round. |

i do not want players who do not live, breathe and think football. i do not know the specifics of andre smith's decision but i can make an inference from this as a fan that this guy doesnt have the drive and focus to be an NFL professional. give me 52 london fletcher mentality players. a team playing as a team will beat a team of more athletic but individual interested players every time. i want guys that are hungry for contact, that love the game and everything is takes to get ready to play. go skins!! |
