Re: Broncos to trade Cutler

I don't think anyone should be stating that Cutler is wrong and the Broncos are right. Both sides have royally screwed this up, but that doesn't justify the other's reaction. Nor should someone ignore Cutler's talent and potential, yes he's a talented QB, but he's no Tom Brady or Payton Manning.

I mention this because the Redskins would be taking an unnecessary risk by trading for him. For as much as people complain about the team trading picks away, getting character players in the team, and "build through the draft", asking for Cutler at Campbell's expense goes along with everything the team has done wrong in the past. Statistically, Cutler and Campbell are pretty similar (I'm not not going to repeat the details, b/c this has been discussed before). Both team blew their chance of making the playoffs last season, and both of them played with deficiencies in their teams (Broncos crappy defense and Skins crappy offensive line). Once again I ask, why risk so much for "potential" and for a QB that statistically is similar to Campbell?

Is Jason Campbell that much of a bad player that fans are willing to let the team risk picks to get Cutler? My answer is no.

Re: Broncos to trade Cutler
GMScud, you couldn't be more wrong about the Cutler situation. Cutler certainly wasn't happy to hear his name floating in trade talks. Especially since he put in an enormous effort to be at the facility all off season learning the new offense, etc. However, that's not what forced him into shying away from the Broncos.

Jay Cutler initiated the phone call between McDaniels and Cutler. During this phone call McDaniels continued to be a douche. Cutler said all he wanted to hear is that going forward, he was the QB. No one LIKES being discussed in trade talks, but they understand it's a business more than anyone. Mort wrote a great article on it that I posted a while back that shines light on the whole situation.

Instead of taking bits and pieces of a story out of context, educate yourself just a little bit in workings around the league. McDaniels has handled this situation very, very poorly.

Lets be honest here, those of you saying Cutler wasn't that good. Of his interceptions, 75% came in the 4th quarter when behind. This means they're throwing and everyone in the stadium knows it. Secondly, they were the 2nd ranked offense in the NFL, they lost what -- 5 running backs, six maybe -- during the course of the season. And their defense was absolutely atrocious. If the Broncos just had the 15th ranked defense they would have easily won that division and been dangerous in the playoffs.

Campbell is a solid player -- but he's no Cutler.

Link to the Mort article: Meeting with Josh McDaniels, GM backfires, Jay Cutler asks Denver Broncos for trade - ESPN
Gee, I'm sorry. Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me.

I knew everything you just said before I posted on this thread. Did I ever excuse McDaniels? Of course he handled it poorly. He brings the Patriots' mentality of never letting the inmates run the asylum, but he just went a little too far with this one.

Fact is, even with McDaniels fumbling this one, Cutler still could have handled it in house without using the media as a mouthpiece for his crying. He purposely started a public pissing match. And how about the past 10 days? McDaniels and the Broncos owner Bowlen have both tried numerous times to contact Cutler, and he won't even acknowledge them. He's acting like a child.

I understand the Broncos and McDaniels should have been more straightforward with Cutler, but he's making a very poor decision IMO, and he's acting like a douche. I'm definitely not the only one who thinks so. Cutler has been a pompous jerk from day 1, and this situation just furthers the notion.
Campbell isn't the "ONE" Tripp, never was, never will be. He is a decent QB, that will never get this team past maybe the wild card round at best. Sure he has had to learn a lot of new systems, but that is the least of his shortcomings. Not too many folks outside of Skins fandom thinks he is all that either, and I agree. He is good, but not a franchise QB type of guy. I rooted for Gus when he was here, but he didn't get the job done, I rooted for Ramsey too, but he didn't get the job done, and then I was pissed at Gibbs for keeping the fossil Brunell in instead of giving JC a chance. Face it, we have been stuck with subpar to average quarterbacking since Rypien left. That being said I think we do keep Jason this season and let him groom Colt for 2010 or 2011 or somehow draft one of the wonder kids in 2010. Cutler is an upgrade over Campbell, but could be more of a distraction than anything. We are better off keeping JC til we land another potential franchise QB or have Colt be the man in 2010 if he really shows promise. Another thing we have to realize is that this team has too many question marks offensively to really be a contender in '09 in my mind or even 2010. I won''t be surprised if we have to wait for Campbell's succesor's succesor til we get to be solid winners again.
You have a really odd sense of reality. And you like to tell me to "face" notions I've already proven as incorrect. If I spent so much time doing that already, why don't you "face" anything I've wrote on the subject already. It will save me time, plus you might learn something.

No one is asking you to believe Campbell is going to wrong all of our rights. Just stop passing off the cuff predictions as facts and making bizzare references to Gus Frerotte (the QB, not yourself).

I seem to appreciate the groundedness that we're two+ QBs away from competing, but you obviously didn't arrive at that using anything sensible. I'm not sure what to think of your predictions anymore. You're either living 8-10 years in the past or the future.

Re: Broncos to trade Cutler

Dude, I swear, why does Mike Florio hates the Redskins so much? Even when he reports that interested teams have been identified as Jets, Bucs, 49ers, Lions, Bears, and Browns (teams that have the ammunition and/or QB to make the trade and desperately need a QB), he stills continue to bring up the rumors from days ago about the Redskins being interested. I guess reporting something that would make sense wouldn't be that popular.

If the team is indeed interested Cutler, then there has to be some interest from McDaniels on Jason Campbell. Otherwise I don't know how the Broncos would stay away from getting multiple picks from a team like the Lions. Shoot, the Broncos could turn Cutler into the Herschel Walker trade and build through the draft.

I dont think people realize that in order to trade for a player our team would have to give something up! What exactly do we trade away? Half of next years picks? Cooley? Landry? Campbell? Or how about all of that combined!

I'm sure if Cutler was a free agent than a lot more people would want to acquire him but when you have to give up vital players of your own team to get that one player it's always a huge risk and one I'd rather we not take.

Well seriously...we've got an above average QB who's improved every year (against the odds w/ new systems to learn and the oldest, slowest, smallest line in football) and half Skins nation is ready to throw him under the bus. Jeez. If any of our players acted like Cutler has been we'd likely be calling for his head...he's on another team IN ONE OF THE LOUSIER DIVISIONS IN FOOTBALL...so we'll take him.

Re: Broncos to trade Cutler

I certainly don't want Cutler and all his BS drama here. I don't know him but he comes across as a whiney little bitch to me. It seems that a lot of players don't like him despite his talent (Jeff George). Has any of his teammates, or anyone besides his agent for that matter, come to his defense? Not that I'm aware of. Not returning calls for 10 days doesn't sound like he's trying to work things out to me. As far as GMSud not knowing the whole story, I doubt anyone really does. It's not like this guy wouldn't lie to get what he wants. And yes, he does have a career losing record. If you're going to blame his teammates for this, doesn't JC deserve the same courtesy? Just like everyone on here I want what is best for our team. I don't think Cutler is good for this team or it's chemistry. I personally don't give a damn what he does as long as he doesn't come here and divide our team.

I'm right there with you bro, good post.

Here's John Clayton's take on the situation. I wouldn't be surprised if Brady Quinn ends up in Denver, since he'd be the closest thing to a "system QB". Clayton does make a good point about McDaniels taking a big risk if his offense doesn't work in Denver. Unlike Boston, in Denver football is the #1 sport and people are going to go insane if McDaniels new QB doesn't produce.

Re: Broncos to trade Cutler

Cutler properly is a better qb then JC , but compensation and a much higher contract wouldn't make it a good deal. Alot of people say you need a great qb to take your team to the next level ,and thats BS. Most of the top teams last year had great defenses and a strong run game. And are team is built more for that , all we need is some turnovers and a healthy line and we could be super bowl bound. Also we beat the good teams and lost to the 49ers , Bengals , and the rams ,wtf. If we would of won 2 of those games we would of been were the eagles were ,and could of gone to the super bowl. We can't play to the level of are opponents anymore. If Trent Dilfer could take the Ravens to a superbowl i'm sure JC can.

This happens a lot in the real world, except that in the real world you don't get traded to another company, you get FIRED. Regardless of what is going to happen, Cutler ends up with another team and gets paid.

Now once again, this is situation is not in the real world, it is the NFL, a place where players get traded. A world where teams and players make "business" decisions. In the end, regardless of what he says, Cutler will benefit b/c he will probably try to get a new deal wherever he gets traded.

We'd have to give up multiple 1st round picks or other picks and pro-bowl players to get him. We have too many needs to eff around with something like this. It's not like we're desperate for QB help. We'd give up way too much. Campbell and those kind of picks/players for one guy isn't as much of an upgrade as a lot of people think.

Agreed, business is always business. But, in this case, you are talking about getting rid of an excellent employee, who has no means for getting fired or traded. The best QB denver has had since Elway. Bowlen must be getting senile, McDaniels should be fired, the team will tank this year. Who wants to have some 30 something year old punk kid, who has only held a figure head title under Belichick, as a coach? This will be the biggest mistake in Denver's history.

I want cutler. Look at his numbers. If you think jc is a better qb for us you're out of your mind. What do you think of this trade. Skins get cutler. Denver gets Quinn and Shaun rogers from cleaveland. Cleaveland gets scheffler from Denver, a first round pick from the skins and Campbell. It's a win win for everybody. If Denver doesn't think it's getting enough throw in a third or fourth rounder from the browns or from the skins, whatever it takes. And don't give me that bs that we won't fit under the cap. If vc or ds want sethinf bad enough they will find a way. I think this will work because Denver gets rid of it's headache at qb and a te whose name has been floating around as trade bait and get a qb who knows mcdaniels system and an all pro dl. Cleveland loses a headache at dl and a qb who might sit the bench and get a good pass catching te who can step in for winslow, a solid backup qb for Anderson and a first rounder. And the skins get their franchise qb for a first round pick and a lame duck qb who we won't give an extension to. Sounds good to me
