re: Q.B. competition?
We should try to sign a guy like Garcia.
He may be a bit too light for the potential pounding he may take here and will never see his career high totals ever again because he doesn't have a T.O to throw to.

re: Q.B. competition?
I love Leftwich. when we played Pittsburgh, I knew we were in trouble the minute he came in. I never understood why Jacksonville gave up on him. He has a wind up delivery that is ridiculous, but he can get the ball to his receivers. Maybe Zorn can make his delivery a little better and he would be awesome. As for the Pittsburgh line being better than ours, that is not the case. Their line sucked.

re: Q.B. competition?
I started a thread about this very subject not too long ago and everyone went nuts. I don't see why he can't be an upgrade over Collins. The only thing that gets me is why Collins was never given a shot even after he took us to the playoffs?
I'm in favor of Byron but only as a backup for this season. I'd be happy one way or the other. I like Collins too but he is getting long in the tooth and he's not in the team's future. |
re: Q.B. competition?
ok i shouldnt have said there o-line was better. but the few times he played last year, and one of those games was against us he had all the time in the world to pass the ball because we couldnt get pressure on any qb last year. i am just saying with our o-line being suspect with his slow deilvery he would not be an effective QB.

re: Q.B. competition?
I am cool with swaping collins for a cheaper and much younger leftwich.
Collins is ok....but he poses no threat to start whatsoever. If they want to push Campbell to the next level...give him some decent competition. That dude is laid back too...just like Campbell...there are a lot of similarities between the 2....I am not sold on Collins being able to rock the west coast offense either...Collins throws to spots...not to receivers...so if neither are west coast system guys...why not go younger, cheaper and with more recent experience for the backup? You guys gung ho on Colt are crazy...this guy is in no condition to start...maybe after 2 more preseasons he could be a decent number 2. |
re: Q.B. competition?
Leftwich is not a WCO guy it would be a waste.
Going after Garcia would be a waste of time as well. Collins know his role is to just run the offense until JC comes back or Colt improves and takes the number two job. As a matter of fact the only free agent that is not OL or DL they should consider is maybe Rudy Johnson. |
re: Q.B. competition?
Yes, throwing to a spot is the WCO.

I think Colt has the potential to be a fine QB one day. But not today. After all we have been through in Redkins Nation we owe it to ourselves and JC to leave him be and let him deveolop. This will be his season of truth. |
re: Q.B. competition?
WTF! Did i miss something...when did the FO decide QB was such an issue for us? It's like something happened all the sudden and Danny/Vinny whoever became hellbent on changing things around.
i just think they have lost faith in JC, but come on Leftwich is just a backup, campbell would beat him out anyway! What's this mean for Brennan? |
re: Q.B. competition?
In training camp last year Collins looked like a stiff. For a system that is so heavily predicated on footwork, TC seemed to have the most trouble of the 4 QB's in camp. He was great for us in the Gibbs/Saunders era, but it's safe to say he's done. Besides, didnt I hear that he was considering retirement and Vinny talked him out of it?
As for Leftwich, he might have a slow wind-up, but he's tough and can get it done. It would be a great pickup for the Redskins. |
re: Q.B. competition?
Maybe they plan on opening the offense up and they want someone who can get the ball downfield in case JC gets hurt or under performs. Besides no one really runs a true version of the WCO anymore anyway. I don't have a problem with this.
I remember that, and I think it was because everyone thought right away you were saying he should replace Campbell.
I like Leftwich but I really don't know what he offers above Campbell.
Well, outside of the fact that two years ago, Byron Leftwich was Jason Campbell, not very much. Signed for the right reasons, he's an excellent use of resources. Signed for the wrong reasons, and he becomes the first line in a bunch of moves that hurts offensive development. So even though I'm a Leftwich-advocate, once a deal gets done, I'll take a wait and see approach to see what we're planning for next year. |
re: Q.B. competition?
It should probably be noted that Leftwich left without being offered a contract. Not yet anyway.

I would never wish anything bad on our team or players, but for the sole reason of silencing the Cult of Colt I wouldn't be heartbroken if he played poorly in preseason. |
re: Q.B. competition?
Man. It's gotten to the point we can't even look at anyone without freaking out. He's probably better than Collins and worth taking a LOOK at. I believe he's from this area and he's younger than Collins. He could probably run the show better than Collins if Campbell went down. I don't think Zorn believes Colt is ready just yet and probably needs another year. The sky is falling! The sky is falling!
Freaking out ?!?!?!? Who's freaking out, man?!?!?!?!? Just because some of us are PISSED our Todd Collins jerseys will be in mothballs now, you don't think we have a right to freak out?!?!?!? :silly: |

Garcia's size hasn't stopped him from playing at a high level in the west coast offense. And he hasn't had TO to throw to in quite a while. Garcia would add tremendous value to our team if we signed him. Look what he did for the Eagles a couple years back when McNabb went down. I'd sign him in a heartbeat. |
re: Q.B. competition?
IMO, this is a typical Redskins move. BL had a few good games (especially vs Wash) last year and is now available so the Skins want him. Does he fit with what the Skins are trying to do? Doesnt matter, he's "hot" and available so the Skins want him. In some ways its almost like the Skins dont trust themselves to evaluate young talent. They constantly pick older guys to stick into spots instead of trusting that they properly evaluated a player they drafted knowing that he could step in when called upon.
|
re: Q.B. competition?
Leftwich is hot? I didn't realize he had so many teams banging down his door. Teams typically prefer a veteran for a backup QB, and Leftwich is younger and a better long term answer than TC.

I dont know how many teams are banging at BLs door but of all the available back-ups my bet is he's the most in demand. I agree BL would be better than TC long term. My point was why bring in BL in the first place? Let Colt be the backup. They drafted him, why not trust your own analysis. |

I don't think Colt is quite ready to be the #2. Who would you trust more if JC went down, a proven veteran or a green 2nd year guy? Banking on the latter is a pretty big gamble. |

It is a gamble but who knows what he can do until he gets a chance to do. Who thought TC was going to rip off 5 wins and lead the team storming into the playoffs (and if you tell me anybody besides Al Saunders you are lying). TC showed nothing up to the point when he got into the game. I hate to keep highlighting the Steelers but they rode an even greener rookie QB deep into the playoffs. It can happen but like you said its a gamble. I'd just like to see the Skins rely more on their analysis than that of others. I think Skins fans are so used to draft picks not working out that they think it takes every draft pick 3 or 4 years to develop into a player that can just get into the game let alone be an impact player. |

Make up your mind http://www.thewarpath.net/543399-post41.html So, on the one hand they are right to look at all ways to improve their team (which I agree with, by the way) but on the other hand they don't bother to just trust their own drafted players? |

Last year's Cowboys is a fine example of having a bad backup QB. Of course, it'd be better for us if they had kept Brad Johnson. |
Re: Q.B. competition?
Maybe the coaching staff doesn't think Collins provides enough competition to Colt and JC, so they want someone in to provide more competition for the QB position.
|
Re: Q.B. competition?
IF Leftwich is just here as the backup, it is just to get a younger guy in there. IF JC goes down or for some reason flops, we are screwed.

Re: Q.B. competition?
im sorry. i meant between Campbell and Leftwich
Leftwich 29, Campbell 27. Leftwich would not be just a younger backup for JC - Collins is almost out of gas - he also would be a cheaper alternative (likely vet min vs. $1.8 mil. for Collins). So Leftwich as a backup would be both younger and cheaper. He's not a real West Coast qb but neither is Collins. |
Re: Q.B. competition?
i like the back up idea. but i want Campbell with a clear head, so there are no more excuses

They pay people well. |
Re: Q.B. competition?
Campbell will be the starter. FO just wants someone to push JC and clearly Collins ain't it. I think Colt is the QB of the future, if hes given the chance. But the BL thing is just to push JC now. I hope it pans out, and who knows we may save some money as well. I agree, JC needs to enter the season with a clear head. Hes a good young QB, just needs to take more chances with the ball. Thats why the Offense stalled in the later part of last year.
|
Re: Q.B. competition?
Best case. We sign BL . Cut Collins. All three quarter backs look good . We get younger and cheaper. Some day we don't need all three, send one to a team with a need for a draft pick.
|
Re: Q.B. competition?
Hey I hate to cause more controversy, I am beggining to believe the Redskins are going to move up in the draft take a quarterback and let Leftwich play QB till Sanchez or Stafford are ready to take over. I just think that it is odd the way they are signing Leftwich and went after Cutler.
