Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
Campbell is too old. There, I said it.

We talk a lot about defensive prospects being less likely to bust here because the environment is good for young defensive players. Well, we're actively working to create the opposite effect for a skill position on the offense. Kelly and Thomas are way more likely to bust when there is no stability at the QB position, and Sanchez simply isn't going to succeed where Campbell failed.

Here's the thing: whatever is good with Sanchez' developmental curve won't matter because it's not like we're all going to be patient with him all of a sudden. Matt Ryan was successful as a rookie because the Falcons spent years, and years trying to put an offense around Vick, and you got Chris Redman in there, and Redman enjoyed some success, and Ryan just happened to be a lot better than Redman.

But the pieces were already in place: two young receivers, a young-improving OL, and a new-refreshing coaching staff. I realize Kelly and Thomas could help with a guy like Sanchez, but they need all the help they can get right now themselves. Sorry, this move has like a 0% chance of success if we pull it off.
GT you're the trusted voice IMO...I wish the prospect was better but it's really, really worrisome right now.

No but I bet the opposing fans of whatever team he plays for will chant that every time he is sacked...which will be often if we draft him instead of a lineman.

If what Smoot is saying is true, which is they want a guy who can carry us when we have injuries and so forth, then why in the world are we looking at this guy? I didn't see any USC games where Sanchez faced adversity and had to bring his team from behind. And the few games he did face adversity he played like sub par. I mean if he's so great why didn't he beat out Booty? Booty, Leinart and Sanchez are all the same guy to me. Very good college players but they'll never be great pro's, just good ones. Not one of those guys have Carson Palmer ability so I see no reason to make a trade.
Many said he should've played instead of Booty but who knows. I don't have a clue whether he'll be worth a damn in the league or not; I'm not in love with him, but if we get him oh well. He seems like he could be an average QB if things don't work out, kinda like what we have.

Ok, fair enough. Here's JC's bad games to compare fairly;

WAS 7 @ NYG 16
STL 19 @ WAS 17
PIT 23 @ WAS 6
DAL 14 @ WAS 10
NYG 23 @ WAS 7
WAS 10 @ BAL 24
WAS 13 @ CIN 20
WAS 24 @ SF 27

All these games were losses. Now what your going to say is JC looked awsome even though the team lost? I can tell you I was unimpressed with most of those games especially the STL game and the SF game. I know we put up 24 points in the SF game but the game was ugly.

A game we won that I was not impressed with was the Detroit game. We should have smoked them and only squeeked by. I guess due to jet lag.

Does this mean Sanchez is the answer no. Does this mean he will be an excellent NFL QB? no. but he does have abilities JC apparently does not. I read somewhere that they felt Sanchez would most likely not start in the pros cause of his 16 games only but will eventually become a Tom Brady.

Which is why as owner I would pull JC aside and tell him to shut up. He's our QB next yr. The team is only looking out for itself for after next yr and if he plays well then he will get resigned and be the starter. If he blows and screws up then either he's let go or Sanchez can try.

I like getting extra picks and all, but I haven't seen much reason to trust our talent evaluation later on, though the 13th pick really isn't a strong position, whoever we could get there we could probably get at 18 or 19, or someone just as good, the first round talent just isn't that deep it seems and really drops off around our pick, save maybe the USC LBs but who knows. We've only pulled a couple guys in the 2nd and mid rounds worth much of a mention.

To the contrary, we actually have a nice track record in the 1st 3 rounds, it's the mid rounds we traditionally miss on.

Cooley, Dockery (not unheard of to get a decent guard in the third), and Jansen are the only ones I can think of in the past 10 years. I'm sure I'm forgetting some drafts, maybe you could say Smoot was a good 2nd round pick.

Well we hadn't had many 2nd and 3rd round picks this decade (9 combined excluding last year) and the only clear whiffs were Rashad Bauman, Cliff Russell and Taylor Jacobs and those were all in '02 & '03. Cooley, Dockery, Betts, Smoot, McIntosh all turned into solid pros.

We've done ok, I'd argue, in the 5th and 6th round with contributors (at one time) Robert Royal, Montgomery, Doughty, Golston, Blades and future HOF, Super Bowl MVP, President of the World Colt Brennan.

I didn't realize how terribly we've drafted for the past 20 YEARS until looking at this history. Our issues pre-date Snyderatto. Let's not be fooled into believing that we're just starting to suck at drafting (for those that feel that way), we're professionally bad.

Speed, leadership, college system, football IQ, accuracy, fire. I love Campbell's class. It's just that class doesn't fire up your teammates in the 4th quarter with the game on the line.

Just get into the game Campbell. Show some fire and maybe no-one would question you. Two minute offense your slow. 4th down you throw short of the first. He never ever shows emotion(even when he was trying to be traded).

Jets Interested in Campbell
Posted by Aaron Wilson on April 24, 2009, 10:01 a.m.

The Washington Redskins’ pursuit of USC quarterback Mark Sanchez may trigger a ripple effect that could send Redskins starter Jason Campbell in a trade to the quarterback-needy New York Jets, according to David Elfin of the Washington Times.

That is, if the Redskins are able to trade up from the 13th overall pick to acquire Sanchez, who is rapidly emerging as the wild card of the upper half of the first round with several teams in the chase.

The Jets are interested in Campbell, who has signaled that he wants out of Washington if they draft a quarterback, as a fallback option if they are unable to land Sanchez themselves. New York currently holds the No. 17 pick.

Redskins executive Vinny Cerrato dismissed the notion that he has spoken to the Jets regarding Campbell.

Through their actions, the Redskins have made it clear that they want to upgrade at quarterback. Their interest in Sanchez follows an unsuccessful offseason bid for Jay Cutler, who was traded to the Chicago Bears by the Denver Broncos.

so is this implying we will go get the Seahawks #4 with our picks, then trade Campbell to the Jets for their 17th pick?

We're not going to have to trade our entire draft to move up 5 spots. 1st, 3rd and next year's 2nd should do it unless the Jets throw in a '10 1st, which I doubt. We're in love with the player, they have the position of need so they can draft Freeman and still keep all their picks.

Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez

I just came across this thread and I dont think I can add much as everyone has done a great job covering his strenghts. One reason why I think Sanchez is so attractive to the Redskins is because, in a number of ways, he's the exact opposite of Jason Campbell.

Partly due to the Skins themselves, Campbell has had to learn something like 7 offensive systems in the past 9 years. I don't know whats going on in Campbells head, but on some level, thats had to have some sort of affect on him. Perhaps the reason Campbell is so careful and indecisive when he's on the field is he's simply not comfortable. Every time he goes back to make a pass, he has 7 or 8 different ways of doing things going through his head. None of it is really Campbells fault, but thats a reality. Campbell has alot of tools, but i think he'd have to be in this system 4 or 5 years before he ever truly got comfortable in it. Going into a contract year, are the skins really ready to make that sort of investment in him?

Then, you look at Mark Sanchez. He's been in one system - a pro-style WCO system - his entire college career. If he's drafted by the Redskins, it will be a smooth, easy transiton from college and he'll be groomed by one of the best QB teachers in the game. He has all the physical tools a coach could want, plus he's got the intangibles - the charisma, leadership and voice this team hasnt had at the QB position in a long long time. By all appearances, he's the kind of QB you build a team around.... thats why the Redskins love Sanchez.

I'm not going to lie. I want the team to get Sanchez. I think if the Redskins keep Sanchez, and keep Zorn around (or at the very least replace him with Holmgren or Shanahan), then the Skins will be on their way to a return to greatness. I firmly beleive that long-term, its a very very wise move. But here's three facts that i'm preparing myself for, should we get Sanchez:

1. I'm not going to like what we give up in order to get him.
2. We'll be ok in 2009, but in 2010, we're going to need a new Center, RG, and if Heyer doesnt progress, a RT, too.
3. I'm going to feel very, very sorry for Jason Campbell.

i don't know how we're going to fix that 2nd problem. Then again, a year ago, i never thought in my wildest dreams we'd have DeAngelo Hall, Albert Haynesworth, and Derrick Dockery on our 2009 roster. I'm worried about 2010 now, but a small part of my brain is telling me "don't worry. If Snyder gets his franchise QB, he'll make sure he does whatever he has to to protect his investment."

I don't really ever nit-pick your posts but this i have to poke at. Snyder will do whatever to protect his investment? Really? At what point has he shown any inclination to do that...we gave up a lot for JC but have allowed 2-3 years to pass w/o giving an honest effort to address the o-line. Snyder does things backward...doesn't build a system and plug a QB into it like the successful teams. Sanchez is nothing special to build around from what can be seen so it's still the same ole same ole.

Nice thread. Considering how things look right now, I think it's a good idea to kind of get comfortable with the idea of having Sanchez be our QB. I do like that he has a quick release and can hit his receivers in stride. It's also a plus that the offense he played in at USC is a lot like the one Zorn is trying to implement.

p.s. is anyone else extremely excited (or worried) for Saturday so we can finally move on, in whatever direction that may be?

I'm not sure you draft a guy because we have that current system in place given our history of constant change in coaches and schemes. What happens if Zorn goes 4-12 next year (not predicting this, just saying "what if") then do you really think Snyder will keep Zorn around? Or will he go after the next big thing...maybe even Cowher? We don't have the consistancy in our coaching staff to do something like this.

Re: Reasons for drafting Sanchez
The reason plain and simple is that the Redskins lost confidence in JC. They no longer believe that he is in their long term plans. And QB is the most important position on the team. When you look at this decision you have to look at it from the point where they already decided that Jason is not the answer...then what do you do? I think if you eliminate JC from the equation it's easier to conclude that Sanchez is the right pick. What most Redskins fans are doing is saying the Redskins are wrong and Jason can be the answer.
I rather wait a year and get a McCoy or Bradford still. I have said in the other threads that the main reason this guy shouldn't be so hyped up is that USC is really the only real football team left in the Pac-10 anymore. I mean they have been stacked for what, close to a decade now with talent. They probably could have beat some lower tier NFL teams they have been so stacked with talent and speed as of late. Remember the debate over whether JC was really all that great at Auburn or did he flourish since he had 2 first round pick HBs lining up behind him? The same type of question needs to be asked about Sanchez. Hard to look average or medicore if you have that much talent around you!!!! You probably could say the same about McCouy or Bradford to be fair about it, but damn they play in the Big 12, which is a lot more physical than the Pac-10.

Can't agree any more Goat. Without the O line upgrade, Snyder could somehow pull Peyton Manning out of his ass and we would still be an average team. Manning wouldn't last the whole season with this aging bunch of slobs.
