you could always open a 3rd line at $10 a month or so, and then switch the phones. This works best if you have someone else who you are thinking about adding anyway, such as a child or parent.
thats actually pretty smart

Re: iPhone

Hey Matt,

I've upgraded blackberries 3x within the last 2 years. The first time the guy at Costco did it for me 6 months after I got a new phone in order to make a sale. He told me if I wanted to upgrade before I was eligible, to call ATT and just ask for the "retention department" aka "the save team" (I had the wrong phone number... just call customer svc and ask for the save team). Just tell them you really want an Iphone, but another carrier (be specific) is offering another phone for a ridiculous introductory price for new customers and it makes financial sense for you to pay the 200 dollar contract breaking price and get the other phone at this point. Ask them if they can help you make it make sense to stay with them.

And if there's one thing I've learned in negotiating, brutal honesty and a concerned tone will get you farther than demanding anything. Sound genuinely concerned but resolute. In other words, don't think of it as a negotiation, but problem solving in order to get to your goal.

Thanks for the advice EE but I think I have an easier route to go now. I'm just going to upgrade my 2nd line which is upgrade eligible. For some reason I didn't think to do that initially. But that is good advice for the future - thanks.

You'll need it for when after your wife plays with your phone.

She already said she can wait til December to get one if she wants it.

Re: iPhone

I went to two "authorized dealers" this weekend only to find out not all dealers sell the iphone. I was told I would have to go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart, or an AT&T corporate store. Since then I've been reading that you can't just switch the sim cards. The phone will only work with the sim that the phone is activated with and the line that has the data plan for it. So now I can choose to do the $399 early upgrade or just wait until December when I'll be eligible for a discounted upgrade. Guess I'm just going to wait it out. Plus there's supposed to be a new model coming out this summer.

You might be able to use your wife's upgrade for your phone...

A buddy of mine lost his phone while we were snowboarding in the backcountry last year. His wife was eligible for upgrade, and since they're on the same contract, they were able to use that to get him a new phone.

So they let me use my 2nd line upgrade so I'm sporting a new 16gb iPhone today! Loving this thing already. I can tell it's going to be a serious addiction.

Now you can moderate this site from wherever you are!

Next step...Matty voicing-over a commercial "Wanna know what the release fee for Antwaan Randle-El is if we cut him next summer?...There's an app for that" (as he expands the Warpath Cap page on his iPhone screen)

Aww man I can't wait. My Verizon contract is up in July, and then it's Iphone time for me. My dad has one, and I've played with it a few times. Pandora is obviously sweet. The "what's close" app that uses GPS to give you your proximity to anything from hardware stores to coffee shops is pretty sick too. I also like APOD (astronomy picture of the day). I'm itching to get it. I'm so over my Blackberry.

Re: iPhone

A few of my favorites:
-Facebook
-The Weather Channel
-To Do (simple, free to do list app)
-Fox Sports
-Google (allows voice recognition searches)
-iTalk (voice recorder, but will be obsolete when apple releases its own recorder as part of its big upgrade later this month)
-Dialer (voice dialing using contacts)
-iTranslate
-WhitePages
-Flixster (movie listings, reviews, and trailers)
-Google Earth
-Pandora
-Kindle (plenty of free books to download)
-Scramble (boggle-like game)
-Shazam (music recognition)
-What's on? (TV channel listings)

There are a few more I have, but I don't usually spend money on apps, so these are the free ones I use. I also have a paid app to use my hotmail account (never felt like switching to gmail) called mBox Mail. Works well.

The coolest feature is bluetooth tethering which apparently is never going to see the light of day here because AT&T already has an aircard plan.

Picked up the 3G S on Friday. My contract with Verizon just expired, so I made the switch. My first iPhone. My goodness it's badass.

Confession: I downloaded the Lightsaber app, and I was totally bouncing around my living room pretending to be a Jedi. Only for a few minutes, but still.

As an iPhone newbie, I'd love to hear about everyone's favorite apps.

How much did it cost you for the phone? I am thinking of doing the same with my Verizon.

Re: iPhone

My phone died on my vacation, and I had to replace it. Being on TMobile, I had hoped to wait out the contract period (8 more months) but once it died, I went ahead and got the G1 phone. While good, I am guessing that the iPhone would easily blow it away.

Right now the 3GS 16GB is $199, 32GB $299. With a 2 year agreement of course.

I got the 16GB, which is plenty of storage space for me.

Ok, lets give it a try. Here is what I know how to use.

-Make and receive calls.
-Check msg. and call history.
-Can take and view pics. but I cannot send them or transfer them to
anything.
-I can store peoples # but it seems I have to learn how every time I try
to store one.

I think thats it. Your turn.

LOL

- Make and receive calls.
- Check message and call history.
- Take, view, and send pics.
- Store numbers easily.

But I don't understand which features I can't click into without getting a $2 data charge on my bill. That crap pisses me off, I get charged just for goofing around on my phone!

But all these apps and smart phones and IPhones and all this stuff, I don't get it. I see my phone as a tool, not some cool thing to play with.

That said if you put one in my hand I'd probably be like a kid on Christmas. Until someone does though, I'll make my calls and texts, hike up my pants real high, and drink my metamucil.
