Well, true journalism & reporting doesn't involve opinions (except reporting others opinions), but a blog is primarily about opinion. So based on what you said, if you truly don't want a reporter's opinion, then you really shouldn't read a blog by a reporter.

JLC had his share of drama with the Skins FO and yeah he took things over the top at times I felt. BUT, I find it hard to think the Skins don't share some of the blame in their little tiff with the WP.

I'd agree.

We'll never know everything. What we do know is that the WaPo moved Maske from the beat because they thought he was too chummy with the Skins. They moved JLC into it and almost immediately there started being problems. Either because of JLC or because the WaPo wanted to get more up in their business. All of this was occurring as the internet was really rounding into form as the key place to get info. I think maybe a little bit of petulance from JLC, a little bit of ego from the Skins, a desire from the Post to be less fanboy and the need to content the internet continuously fueled acrimony. And once a beat reporter loses the ability to do his job as JLC did then it all goes to hell. Reid seems to have better relationships...or at least no burned bridges. I'd like to see him get the bump and get back in the groove with the Skins. Maybe it's time they went back to the homerboy fandom type stuff that they dumped with Maske for a while. Carry a little water and smooth things back over.

I agree. Synderatto has a rep for trying hard to control what comes out of the organization. I understand why they want to do that, but they're too big to worry about what one beat reporter says.

Will be interesting to see how the next guy does. I don't foresee any reporter getting more info than JLC did a few years back. Seems that Snyder has made a serious priority to control the flow of info. out of Redskins Park.

I'm not saying this is what I think or have any info to support, but it's quite possible that some decisions (e.g. Byner) were made where people were let go because they talked too much to JLC.

Good overview. I remember reading the post in the 80s when Gibbs' teams were rolling. Big news back then only happened when a deal was actually made, e.g. trade for W. Marshall, or when somebody talked too much, e.g. D. Manley calling J. Kent Cooke a "miser."

Otherwise, it was just basic reporting; coaches said so & so looked good in practice, so & so isn't healthy yet, etc. Now w/the internet we want "inside" info. Maybe it will do us well to not have as much info.

The Redskins, as much as I love them, are a major pain for the media to deal with. MAJOR. But if you treat them right, they treat you right. It doesn't mean praising them at all stops, just being respectful. It's hard to explain

Bloggers and columnists are not the same as reporters. I dont care either what the beat reporter thinks of the team because if he is reporting then the reader wont know what his opinion is. He a reporter, not a columnist. A columnist's job is to write his opinion based on his observations/ideas, not report facts. They are 2 totally different jobs with completely different responsibilities and it amazes me how so many people dont understand the fundamental difference.

Maybe it is because too many try to do both. No one takes Dan Steinberg too seriously because he simply blogs. He isn't performing any real reporting duties. Now if half his job was to screw around and write funny/interesting blogs and the other was to report on the FO moves of the Capitals it would get hinky I bet.

I don't care about [I]a reporters [/I] opinions. I do care about the opinions of [I]sports commentators, bloggers, and forum members.[/I]

you miss the point - RI wasnt advertised as a "blog" for a reporter to write about his opinions - it was advertised as a source for inside information - a place for a reporter to post snippets of news as soon as they became available, without us having to wait for a full-fledged article to be written, edited, and approved by WaPo management. I hope Jason Reid sticks to that formula, and leaves the opinionating to someone else.

I don't mind the analytical nature of some of his posts it's is just that far too often they are only of the negative variety. It is fine with em to have a cadre of sources who can give good football analysis but it needs to be a good mixture of sources not just a bunch of sources who don't like the way one guy or team does something in general and then everything they say is negative.

OK, I may have missed your point, assuming that RI was advertised as you say it was. I've been reading it for years & I never remember it being advertised as anything per se, I just understood it to be a blog & a place where news was available asap.

I won't argue on what RI was intended to be, since I don't know. What it is now though is a blog/news update site. If you take away the blog aspect of it it will just become a news forum, which is what the Wash Post is anyway. As I mentioned in a previous post, J. Reid or whoever takes over (assuming JLC leaves) is highly unlikely to get more "inside" info than JLC was a few years ago. Maybe that's for the best as it pertains to the skins though.

He's still there, unless something has changed the past few months that I missed.

But it's like this. We (the media) are admittedly constantly pushing the limits of our relationships with teams, players, coaches, etc. Likewise they with us. So we could, for example, maybe go a little too far with the Washington Wizards as far as what we report. And we'd get a call "Hey, we said that in confidence. We don't appreciate what you did..." Ok, sorry. We apologize, forgive, and move on. With the Skins though, and keep in mind this is from my experience with them from 7 years ago, one mistake and that was it. You were done. There was no opportunity to explain or justify. Once they thought you had wronged them, you were persona non grata. You and I both kind of know that first hand.

Any idea why? Did they treat the media this way during the JKC years? 7 years ago would put us right around the whole Spurrier fiasco, and not too far removed from disastrous signings like Carrier, Deion, etc. Possibly this led to a frustration filled, low tolerance approach by Danny and Co? Just my speculation, but I'd love to hear what you know (or at least what you're willing to divulge).

I live in Southern California and i watch the Washington Post show everyday. JLC IMO seems negative towards the Redskins Organization. It's like he enjoys the Redskins lack of success. I think Redskins should try to keep some information from the media , like New England does. Somethings us fans do not need to know. If we find out so does all the other 31 teams. This is the age of lets see who can break the story first. Sorry but I wont miss JLC reporting info my Redskins.

I was pretty involved with them during the final Norv years, the Marty year and the first Spurrier year so I don't exactly know what it was like with JKC. But as I understand it, and from what I've been told, this low tolerance approach had something to do with the Redskins wanting to get more presence on the national stage as cable and Internet was starting to emerge and local sports (what I was working on) was starting to fade away. So whereas under previous regimes were the local guys where the first to get the scoop on many rumors, that was becoming less and less the case. So when we would get information off the record, (we being the local media) in our zeal to get some scoop, we'd often report it. Which is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Off the record is off the record. Ultimately, a balance was struck but at the beginning I know it was pretty tense.

Gotcha. So it's a combination of a bit of poor journalism ethics by some local folks and some thin skin from the, um, Skins.

Am I understanding you correctly that you guys (the local media I mean) felt you were being intentionally bypassed by your sources so they could give the first dibs on leads/stories to the national guys (presumably to gain more favor on the national media stage)?

I didn't mind JLC. Sure maybe he poured it on VC and the gang sometimes, but hey he's got a blog. Blogs are for giving some inside info and some opinions too right? Plus VC and DS haven't exactly deserved a kings treatment. Last time i checked they haven't been an organization that's finely tuned. They do stupid s*** all the time. He also gave them props when deserved.

I always thought that as well but part of me can't help but wonder if the reason he did so well at NFLN was because he was at NFLN. Can anyone tell me what he was like when he was the Bronco's beat reporter?
