Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

Does anyone know the level of input that Zorn has had in this transaction and in Jensen's release? I'm just curious to know how much of a say he's had, especially since his name has come up when both of these players were released (i.e. Zorn talked to Jensen and Thrash, etc., etc.). I'm wondering if Zorn in his second year is getting more of a saying in player transactions.

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

In Hixon's interview he seemed to indicate that Roydell Williams had the inside track to be the #5 guy. But I don't see that happening personally. The number 5 guy has to be a special teams baller, and that's not really Williams' forte.

ppl use career highs and the term improvement. but you have to look at the numbers and see what he has done for the team.

Who's getting paid more than who isn't ARE's fault. That said, even Zorn has said that he would be best suited in the slot. The hope/expectation is that either Thomas or Kelly is the #2 guy by the start of the season.

His level of input has always been high

Hopefully ARE can be a slot receiver due to the emergence of Kelly and/or Thomas. I personally don't really care to see him in B&G anymore either, but we pulled our typical restructure move with him, so now he'd cost a fortune to cut, and we'd have to restructure someone else. I'm tired of that viscious circle.

I agree that he's better served in the slot but if we released him (as you advocated) then what? We don't have anything better than him in house (although Thomas or Kelly should pass him during the season) and there's nothing better available on the market.

Where's the logic in "release him"?

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

I like the kid from Nevada. Thye say he has strong hands and catches everything throw his way. He caught the TD pass from Colt, that was the 1st allowed by the defense in OTA's. it didnt say which unit it was.just that he was well covered on the play and still made the grab.

It would force a younger player into the starting role. They either buckle or they flourish, but at least you would know what you got.

The Thrash release opens up a bit more cap room too...

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

I'm pulling for Marko Mitchell and Keith Eloi. Both were reported to have been catching everything thrown their way. I also would like to see Jaison Williams somehow do well cause he's 6-5. Nice end zone threat.

Agreed, plus he only gives you one TD pass per season

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

anyone notice the big difference between this & Jansen's? Looks like they already have a job for him, or are working something out. If that's the case why didn't he just retire?
JJ insisted he could play more, wonder if they tried to keep him in the org. in some way?

This team has been at least a couple years behind in starting a much needed youth movement but it's really underway now. This is the unfortunate consequence, they have to cut older vets. HOpefully thrash just retires w/his health.

Great career, always appreciated him being a Redskin.

A youth movement was needed. im ready to see these young guys come into their own.

Can't believe I didn't check my RSS reader earlier; didn't get an alert but I usually check it every 15 mins or so. Wow; can't say it wasn't expected though. Congratulations to him and I hope that he's okay with it. I wonder if they asked him if he wanted to retire first and as part of that, if he thinks that he can still play elsewhere.

Any word on Mitchell's route running? I know when he came in they said that it was a weak point. Could be a tough battle between him, Eloi, Roydell Williams, etc
Thanks James for being the type of player I enjoy pulling for. Would love to see James stick around as a coach for the young wide outs.
I'd say a start like a QC coach on that side and an assistant special teams coach would be great. He knows how to field both types of returns, he knows how to attack returns, etc.

Well who do you think that they're going to talk to about it? I know that there are personnel guys but do people expect to have Vinny out there on the sidelines releasing people? I'm sure it was a joint decision by the coaches and then when failing the physical it was basically guaranteed to happen.

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

I hate to see Thrash go, but I got the sense the Zorn regime didn't think as highly of Thrash compared to Gibbs, and I think that's the same with Jansen. I am glad to see some competion at the WR position, (even though everyone except Moss should be competing). I have a feeling Jaison Williams will win the #5 job. He has good size and deceptive speed for his frame (6'5 240) and pretty good stats at a major conference.

I could see Thrash being a coach similar to Wayne Sevier or Pete Rodriguez. Why not let him work under Danny Smith for a while.

Why can't they bring him on board as an assistant and have him working with the Rookie WR's to get them up to speed. Meanwhile Hixon can spend more time with Moss, ARE, MK, and DT. I think if all our WR's were on the same page then Hixon could focus on adding more and more to the WR's and teaching them. Instead we have 4 on the same page cause they all learned the new offense together, then you have 5 more starting new having to learn the plays and routes. Marko Mitchell, R.Williams, Jaison Williams, Keith Eloi, and Haggens.

Thanks for the contributions, Thrash, but I am glad that his roster spot is open. He had no upside and we need some guys who can surprise opponents.

He was an example of where hard work will take you. Gibbs loved the guy which is a good enough endorsement for me. I would like to see him continue on with the organization.

I always liked JT. If the Skins "premier" receivers had as much desire, work ethic, and attention to detail as JT has the Skins would have a top flight receiving corps.

A great football player and loyal Redskin. A player who would have played any position the coach asked him to. I wish him and his family nothing but good luck and success. Hopefully he will be working for the NFL in some capacity at some point. Thanks JT.

I agree that Thrash didn't do anything that can't be replaced but how was he a bust?

If you want to see the definition of "bust" take a look at what you gave up for Roy Williams and his line for 2008. Smarten' up.

Are you still pissed that he made Terrance Newman look like a practice squad player when we kicked your around in your backyard? (btw Thrash's motion play wasn't as bad as the double move that Moss put on him)

DBUCHANON101 06-13-2009 08:07 PM

Re: Updated: Redskins Release James Thrash

I hear Newman was also beat by their late round pick M.Johnson from OU in OTA's.

So you think Marko Mitchell and Shelton are competing for the 6th spot, with Roydell being #5? Your wording was a bit confusing.
