This is nothing new with Landry they call it voluntary for a reason. The only thing he's missing out on is being with this teamates, people forget Springs and ST did this and they gave them a pass. That being said if Landry wants to become an elite FS instead of a good one, he should be here but that's his choice.
Im fine with players staying home this time of year. I'd rather they be there, but I feel like after a 16+ game season, your body takes a beating. Give it a bit longer to recover. All they do is lift or run.

However, there's no excuse to ever not call the coach back. I can not condone that. Always call the coach/owner/gm back immediately.
That is total bullshit. You make that kind of money to play a frigging game, you should make an all out effort to get in shape, and show up for any team functions that might help with team cohesion and shaking the off season rust off. 16 games is nothing compared to the NBA or the NHL. All this shows me is the guy isn't all that into winning. A non chalant attitude among your starters comng off an abysmal 8-8 season tells me we might not have much to look forward to in '09.

Well said and that is my point about my last comment. If the guy wants to be an elite level player he needs to show up, at least to shake some offseason rust off and get a jump before camp. These guys are being paid mucho $$$$$$$$$ to bring home a title and it would be nice if they showed that they want to actually do it. They guys who want to win do not jerk around, make any and all preseason/offseason workouts, and do a shitload on their own in the offseason(like LT, etc). If Landry is indeed doing some crap like LT and some of the other hardcore players, then maybe I could see not giving a crap, but this guy doesn't seeem hardcore.

Re: Landry is MIA

I seriously doubt Landry want out of DC. He is in a great city to live, a team with a great fan base, a consistent top 10 defense AND most importantly an owner who overpays everyone. Why in the hell would he want out? As for him ignoring the coach, I cant stand with that tactic at all...whats the point? Just disrespectful IMO

As long as he shows up for the TC & mandatory work outs, this isn;t really that big a deal. I mean, I don't want to find out that he's hanging out with Ricky Williams or anything. So long as he's staying out of trouble, I'm fine with it.

The only reason this is news is because there isn't anything else TO talk about. If this was TC or even pre-season, something this minor (or should I say that this is a minor situation & that something with equal importance) wouldn't even make the news....I mean, unless it's TO & then everyone in the media is talking about what color his poo was that day.

Re: Landry is MIA

Thats wonderful he is working out 4-5 days a week in Swidell,La. How about working out with your teammates during OTA's. LaRon is a good football player but he still has alot to learn to get on the level of Ed Reed. I understand its voluntary but when your still new in the league and making what #1 draft picks make you should have your butt here. If London, Portis,Moss,Samuel and Rogers are here then why not him. If he comes to camp and pulls up with some lame injuries players and coaches will be pissed.

Your right it is voluntary, but if your the only player not there than whats up with that. Does he feel that if he works out on his on that he is getting in better shape? Is he getting the reps to go against other NFL WR? I hope he is not satisfied just to be a average player and make his little money. Its nice that all the other Redskins player think they can benefit from OTA's. Its about the team not individuals that make a Champion Team. LaRon don't be Alone Wolf get with your teammates. Oh how about having respect and return the call from your coaches. I bet when you were in High School or Collage your ass would be calling the coaches back. Get to the Pros Heads swell up.

Why does what they make matter? How does it change the definition of the word voluntary?

The whole "they get a lot of money to play a game" is one of the silliest arguments out there in my opinion.

Re: Landry is MIA

Apparently Laron has a history of being unavailable for voluntary activities. That makes one question his sense of team. As much as we love the individual achievements football is still a team sport and it is hard to be an elite level player if your not first a leader on your team. You can't be a leader on the team if you are unavailable. Someone also posted that he is not happy playing free safety but would rather play strong safety. Well again, given this isn't his natural position, for the sake of team and self maybe he ought to be at OTA's. I don't think Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu care where you put them on the field, they are going to lead, they are going to make plays. That is who they are. They will make things happen. I can't agree that this doesn't matter. When a person avoids their coaches avoids any responsibility that is not forced or coerced then that says something and it will probably say it on a Sunday afternoon.
We forget how young some of these kids actually are. Maybe he will grow up before his obvious talent is gone or maybe he isn't shooting for Hall of Fame status, and is content with Prima Donna instead.

Wow I sure hope your LaRon's agent cause Coach Zorn can't get him to answer his calls. Maybe if Dan Synder calls he would pick up the phone.

A friend of mine works out at the same gym in Slidell, LA. I was walking into the local watering hole yesterday to watch the LSU baseball game when the phone rings.. "I have somebody who wants to talk to you". - My friend " Hey Jim its Laron". !!!! I was stuttering for a second there. "Hey Laron long time Skins fan and also a fan of yours". -me. We talked for about five minutes about the defensive squad this year, and he sounded Very excited about the upgrades on the d line. I also told him about the warpath and the concerns of the fans about him not being at the otas. He told me he was flying to D.C. today. (Sunday) It was pretty surreal, I mean to talk to one of my favorite players in such a casual phone conversation. Laron is a very personable guy, He doesn't know me from Adam, but he took five minutes out of his workout to shoot the breeze about the Skins. I think between what was said, and just his demeanor, he set aside any fears I had of him being unhappy as a Redskin... HAIL!

Yeah, to be perfectly candid with you GMScud, I seriously hope Laron shows up... I promise you that I spoke to him, and all that I have posted is what I genuinely took of the conversation. That being said, and all things considered, I will look like a fool if he does not in fact show up.. This is so me. I love to put my foot in my mouth, not that I like the taste though. I just post the truth as I see and hear it.

Just curious when/where Landry has said he's unhappy at FS or feels he's underutilized at FS or something to that effect? I've only heard that comment from fans and it still surprises a bit cuz Laron was at the top of his college game (LSU) as FS. What made him the best overall defensive player in that draft (at the time) was his ability to almost totally shut down opposing offenses air assault.

...maybe he's been a little bit of a disappointment in that regard but personally I think this is his breakout year...PB baby.

It is called offseason speculation, another Mike Florio stab against the Redskins, writers have nothing else to write, etc., etc. I was reading Florio's article on this, I swear he's such a prick. Is he a Cowboys fan? Shoot, Mosely from ESPN who used to write for a Dallas newspaper gives our team less crap.

Damn, I wish people would start rumors about teams we have to play against. Personally I heard that DeMarcus Ware, Tony Romo, and Jason Witten all want out of Dallas. And Donovan is tired of the city of brotherly shove. So is Westbrook thats why he's faking an injury, to stay away from that city for as long as he can. And oh yeah Eli doesn't like the idea that he can't have an unregistered handgun, plus he doesn't like the New York weather so he's requesting a trade to San Diego.

If he's preparing on his own and knows what he needs to get done, no big deal. Sucks that he's really the only guy not there though; he seems like a guy that keeps himself in shape so I'm not too worried about that. You should have the respect to respond to your coach though.

Landry is a dumbass and a pure 100% idiot. If the coach calls you call him back. It's called respect. If you don't show up to OTA'S I don't have a problem with that. But not calling back the head coach?? WTF??

FO aside, this is precisely why we're a mediocre team. If you get a call from your employer, take it or return it to communicate you will/will not participate. It's called being a professional. It's that simple.

As for others on this thread who are in the know about Landry's 5-day-week workout, well, rock on that he's hitting the treadmill with other dudes, but it's not the same. He needs to be with his teammates who are taking the time and initiative to show up, to build a team, camaraderie, chemistry, mindset.

And we're not talking about a $60k employee ditching calls from HR during a sick day, we're talking multi-millionaires with months off from the office. And yes, I know their bodies take a pounding...

Sorry, Landry gets no pass from me, and I can give a rat's ass how Springs and ST used to handle this. I came up during the glory years, when Redskins with Super Bowl rings conducted their own voluntary workouts often b/4 Joe Gibbs even got out of bed. It worked out for them.

I agree 100% that this is a big reason why the Skins are a mediocre team. You mention that he was contacted by his employer and in the Skin's case this is only sort of true. With the Skins, the players see themselves as working for DS not the head coach. Therein lies the problem. The Skin's chain of command is screwed up and until its fixed, and the players think they are working for the head coach, this team will be disfunctional and mediocre. I bet he wouldnt ignore a call from DS.
