at least fines to the team at the VERY least |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
I don't get why this is such a big deal. Yeah, kinda funny to see a punt bounce off of it every so often, but to call the stadium a fail? Lame. I hate the Cowboys and (some of) their fans just as much as anyone, but the stadium looks absolutely awesome. I wish FedEx was that incredible. Those screens are sick. It's all to NFL spec, and until the league says something, the punters just have to deal with it. Kinda like rain, sunshine, heat, poor turf, etc etc.
Are you serious? This is like building the best NBA stadium of all time and the basket is fixed at 9 feet. If you spend $1.2 BILLION on a place to play football, isn't the first priority to make sure that the structures do not interfere with the game? There is no excuse for an error like this. It isn't like a football had never hit the top of a stadium before. The bottom line is that he wanted his TV and did not care if it was in the way or not. He had an unlimited budget for his entertainment complex and chooses to ignore the basic needs. I am sure that it is great for concerts and watching HD television but it is a total failure as a football facility. |

They were given dimensions by the league. They met the minimum requirements. I don't consider that ignoring the basic needs. The screens are still awesome. ;) |
Jerry Jones: The scoreboard isn't budging
11:23 PM Fri, Aug 21, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz Tim MacMahon/Blogger Bio | E-mail | News tips It didn't take long for a punter to prove Jerry Jones wrong. Titans rookie A.J. Trapasso bounced a ball of the Jerrytron during the third quarter. If you thought Jerry Jones would react by raising the center-hung structure, well, you thought wrong. Jerry pointed out that his $1.2 billion stadium was built to league specifications. He wouldn't even entertain the possibility of cranking the electronic monstrosity that holds the 60-yard big screens up a few feet. You see, before construction could begin, the league had to approve the plans. And at several stages thorughout the construction, the league had to approve the plans. Without that approval, the NFL could not sanction games held in that facilty. And the league liked the stadium enough to award it the 2011 Super Bowl, even before construction was half complete.
So the cowboys and there fans are ok with the embarrassment of this? wow. No wonder the owner/general manager is considered the biggest jackass of NFL |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Ya, and I just saw the titans punter hit it. Something tells me that Goodell will send a letter to Jerry saying that he needs to raise it atleast 15 more yards, because this will be a problem for a lot of punters. This isn't a weather problem, this would go into the category of a fan storming the field type play. The unusual type condition, but fixable is what I'm trying to say. You can't have everything Jerry.
In a side note, I think I've seen everything in this game that you could see. A few one handed catches, a last second (literally), a false start everyone but the center call, helmets flying, and of course balls hitting an overly big TV screen.
i agree with this. They will have to crews out there during the week to have it raised by opening day. This would be such an embarrassment to the NFL otherwise. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
The video board currently sits 90 feet above the ground, while the two Mitsubishi ads accompany each side of it making it 89 feet above the playing surface. The NFL mandates video boards must be at least 85 feet above the ground.

I mean is there any good reason not to adjust it, or is he just being stubborn for no apparent reason? |

I'm just happy that now when we play the Cowboys I don't have to see that ugly hunk of scrap metal known as Texas Stadium. Though I do find it funny that the screen is capable of blocking punts. By the way am I the only one freaked out about how it looks more like a.......I don't know some form of mental telepathy instead of a TV screen.

Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
ESPN is reporting that the screen was installed actually several yards HIGHER than what the NFL mandated.
But now the NFL is looking into it deeper. It is estimated that it would cost an additional 2 million to raise the scooreboard. And I would bet that the NFL would have to share some of the cost. |

If I were an NFL coach, I'd tell my punter to hit it as many times as possible till they raised it. All it will take is one five hour game for the NFL to get that thing raised.

I think the league should pony up most of the cost if they want it to go up. I think that if that happens JJ should not expect anymore superbowls there, but at least he will be "right". |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Looking at the 'Skins offensive stats for the first 2 weeks of preseason I notice that from the 2 games played thus far, the 'Skins have had a total of 22 offensive possessions.
And of the 22 offensive possessions only 6 have crossed the 50 yard line into the oppositions side of the field. So yeah, I can certainly see your concern for punting. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
why would the league have to foot some of the cost for raising the score board? Mr. Jones was the one who put it in the way. and 2 million to him is like 2 million to Snyder, a drop in the bucket

Because the screens actually meet league regulations and have had league oversight. Some of the blame here needs to be placed on mistaken league regulations. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
If Jones refuses to raise it the Cowboys should get an "unsportsman like conduct" penalty everytime a punt hits that monstrosity. The whole thing is hilarious.

With Jones constantly bringing up how much the stadium costs you think he'd be thrilled to throw in another 2 million dollars to the final cost tally. Now money matters all the sudden when you bring up $2 million in REALISTIC dollars and not $1 billion imaginary ones. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
I guess we have to wait until either New England or the Giants play there, with so much bitching and whining in their sports media, I'm sure something would be done about (see Brady rule for example).

Now money matters all the sudden when you bring up $2 million in REALISTIC dollars and not $1 billion imaginary ones.
It would not cost them a penny to raise the thing as it is on cables and can be raised and lowered with a push of a botton or two. I'm sure after a few times of punts hittting it they will be asked to raise it up some. It was designed for viewing at its current level and thats why they don't want to rais the thing up. As it sits now most people in the mid and upper level just look straight out and ther is the screen. People in the lower level look up some and people at the very top look down some. I actually think the thing takes away from the game and people will watch that more then they actually watch the live play on the field. It is nice to have a nice screen to watch after a play but this thing is just to dam big and anoying. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Not sure it's not easy to just push a button to raise it, unless that button push costs $2M
|
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
the screen will be raised shortly to accommodate a U2 concert. but matty is right. the cost, for some reason, is around 2 million bucks
|
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
I read that they need 6 winches the size of Humvees to move it; I was not clear whether those are still to be installed (hence the 2million) or if they were installed already and more work is needed in addition to them.

Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Because the screens actually meet league regulations and have had league oversight. Some of the blame here needs to be placed on mistaken league regulations.
Yeah, if the league mandates that it has to be moved, JJ isn't going to just pay for it himself, and I don't blame him. (btw, people don't become billionaires by paying for stuff like this to be redone, it's not a "drop in the bucket" as some have said). It's like the NFL has signed off on it like a bldg. commissioner, JJ et al (town of arlington is at least co-owner?) have complied w/league rules. That's why you do bldg. inspections. I imagine that the league standard ASSUMED that scoreboards would always be on the ends or side of stadiums, not right in the middle. |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
I think this really will add to what could be the stadium's inherent home field disadvantage. People will be looking upward more so than down on the field. During the game Kurt Minnifield talked about how all those upper seats have to look downward at the stadium at a sharp angle because your eyes are drawn to the screen in front of you which is at near eye level for so many.
Will this change the energy of the crowd if so many people are only looking at the screen, rather than actual field? I don't know, i guess as much noise can be generated even if people are yelling at the screen, but it doesn't seem like it would be as intense. This will be interesting to follow as the season goes. This is the first stadium that's designed a tron as a primary viewing option, rather than a supplemental/replay tool. Eventually, as people realize all they are doing is watching a big screen, they will feel much less obligation to be in their seats, and might spend more time on trips to concessions, bars, etc. where there are smaller screens. Sound familiar? FedEx has never been the homefield advantage that RFK was, even though it holds 48,000 or so more. In a nutshell, careful what you wish for, some of these huge stadiums really suck in terms of game day experience for the fan. I think JJ et al have done an incredible job, but I think it will be bad for the home team. :) ! |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Old stadium: Ran out of money and left with an ugly hole in the roof that causes horrible shadows on the field.
New stadium: Purposely spent money to replicate the ugly hole in the roof and in a massive spending effort, installed a punt-blocking TV screen over the field. This is hilarious...only in Dallas would this crap happen. At least this screen won't be affecting any games of importance, since Dallas has not won a playoff game in 13 years and counting. :D The league should massively fine him for every week he does not move it, whether it affects a kick or not. Knowing Jones and his ego, he'll pay the fine before admitting he was wrong (stupid). |

True, and Monster Truck events...he has more planned for this stadium than hosting football games...especially since January is always wide open on the calendar for the Cowboys' facility. :D |
Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
I really can't kill JJ or Dallas for this -- the screen is well within NFL regulations. It needs to be moved, but the league needs to pay for it and change the rules. I'm sure if you built a fence in your yard that was within homeowners regulations, then they come tell you it's too short -- you're not going to pull up and start over out of your own checkbook. Either make the homeowners association pay for it, or say deal with it.
That said, I wish we had a jumbotron that didn't have pixels the size of cars. When you look up it looks like Techmobowl on ours. GO BO GO! |

Re: Problem w/ Cowboys giant screen.
Everyone keeps talking about these regulations...I'd like to see them in their original text.
Most stadiums have scoreboards/screens on the ends. Do these specs actually refer to "normal" scoreboards. Do they say anything about over-field obstructions? I ask because 85 feet is VERY LOW to be talking about something hanging over mid-field considering that punts and kicks can easily reach that height. I don't believe the NFL would specify a height for a structure that would easily interfere with such a frequent play. It can't be talking about something hanging in the center the way I see it. Possibly, the league never had the foresight to think someone would be so arrogant or spendy to install something so massive directly over the field and never had a regulation for it...so they cited the "normal" scoreboard specs that are usually installed in a location that does not interfere with a ball within the bounds of the playing field. This whole "meets league regulations" just seems like an excuse or passing of blame by Jones and his defenders...the height of the regulation being cited just seems fishy if talking about something over the field. Punts and kicks can easily hit something if this truly is the regulation speaking of hanging over the field...I just don't buy that the NFL would have this measurement on the books for this specific case. Maybe they used another regulation and applied it to the Jerrytron because it was never a question before...but I doubt he truly meet a specific requirement that was talking exactly about that screen. |

Those type roof's are designed a certain way for support reasons and you cannot at the last minute decide to leave out structure that the roof depends on for its suport and design. JJ can rais this thing anytime he decides its a problem with a push of a botton so its no real big deal. |
