I am piss ass drunk due to disappointment by the 3rd quarter.
Let's also remember we're playing the Patriots. They're pretty damn good
I think a lot of people have forgotten that we've played some tough a$$ defenses. I don't think during the regular season our first team offense (or most first team offenses) could light it up against Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and New England. Shoot, any team that played these three teams would be lucky to come out 1-3 against them. |
I could care less about winning the game. But let's be real- lack of offense buried our season last year. It needs to better this season and thus far we've seen no indications that it will be. I wonder how dismissive you guys would be about the preseason if we were lighting up the scoreboard.....
Sure disappointing for now... but how will it impact the season come September? I think after the legendary Spurrier preseason (Osaka anyone?), quite a few people would be pretty dismissive if we were blowing teams out in August. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
The passing game doesn't improve from last week with the starters in, and our starting defense doesn't get a good share of 3 and outs. Either one would be a disappointment. Combined would be a failure.

I was being sarcastic. Everytime they interview Haynesworth that's what he says. |

I think after the legendary Spurrier preseason (Osaka anyone?), quite a few people would be pretty dismissive if we were blowing teams out in August.
at the same time though, remember getting blown out by the pats in the 2006 preseason? I didn't think anything of it, cause it's just preseason, but that game was foreshadowing for a difficult year, while the pats had another good year. Preseason is hard for me to gauge things on. Before free agency you could predict the season fairly well and good teams usually didn't do that well in preseason. Now it seems there are so many teams that need the extra rehearsal time due to coach & player turnover, so sometimes the starters are playing fairly hard. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
The Lions were 4-0 last preseason, was that a foreshadowing of going 0-16?

Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Campbell goes 1 for anything. Or throws more picks than scores. Or sucks out loud.
|
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
If Zorn takes the same approach he's taking in the other preseason games.
I know Billichick will take the game seriously and if Zorn doesn't he's gonna get abused. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Someone important to the team gets seriously injured.
Other than that, dress rehearsal or not, it's still just preseason. |

Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
More worried about the defense than the offense at this point, but I do expect to see the pass rush harassing Brady for the entire first half.
It's a failure if Brady makes a preseason highlight reel out of our secondary, or if we suffer a major injury on either side of the ball. I'm okay with a boring performance. I just don't want a complete embarrassment that will be on NFL TA the rest of the season, clip by clip. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
I meant 10-14 points by the half, too, which would be 20-28 for a whole game. I thought the starters would play only about a half.
Even with that, so much of the second half strategy is based on halftime adjustments that we can't extrapolate a half of points over a game.
Understanding, fully, that your point was that 10-14 points in a half is completely sufficient, my counterpoint is that we won't have any idea how sufficient that is until we play a whole game, start to finish. |

Disagree. First team offense needs to perform and puts some points of the board. I think this would ease alot of people's mind going into the season: Fans, media, FO, coaches and the defense. I think the first team Offense getting shut out or turning the ball over a couple times would be much more detrimental for the confidence of this team. I feel the defense has more ability to bounce back if they get beat up tonite. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
I think it's safe to say the first half was anything but a failure

I agree the first half was much better than what I expected... |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
I was very pleased with Jason's play. Santana was really good, too. The starting O-line left a little to be desired, and the penalties were just out of control bad. But our starters had 3 scoring drives (2 tds) against their starters. That's what I wanted to see.

Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
consistency was a problem
Randy Moss was a challenge Qb pressure..........light BUT, they paced the Pats and came through when they had to. .........and some of the rooks look....good! I'm satisfied |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Only badthing i saw on offense was too many flags.Killed many drives when we were in short situations.

Agreed. They need to fix that. I know the refs calls can be inconsistent in the preseason, but a lot of the encroachment penalties made by the defense were inexcusable. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Tonight was not a failure but there are some major concerns.
1) The oline already looks questionable. While big sacks weren't allowed there were several big hits on Jason. The line needs to get much better all around period. 2) Overall very little pressure on the QB. This worries me in the big picture sense. How w/ phat Al and Rak in there can we not get pressure on the QB? Something tells me Blache (edit) isn't scheming in a way that maximizes our talent on D. 3) Penalties. Why is this the same story year after year. Just tons of stupid penalties. We look ill-prepared and basically sloppy off and on through the game. On the positive side JC and the air attack looks to be coming together a bit. |

And we had way too many penalties and some of them were really foolish. |

Can't argue w/ the freakshow of talent that is Brady/Moss. What killed me is how Hall didn't get beat he just couldn't regain position to defend the pass. Say he picks the inside on that play you're talking an INT. The 2nd Moss TD was all on Laron. He continues to disappoint IMO. I expected a breakout season from the kid but so far he's still a step or two late on many of the plays that count the most. I have a sneaking suspicion there's a lack of intensity in Landry keeping him from greatness. |

Come on. Not sure if it was a mental mistake by one of the corners, but Moss ran inside and Laron was left all alone to cover him one on one. Name a safety in the league right now who can handle Randy Moss in man coverage. Better yet name a corner who can hanlde him one on one. Dude is other-worldly. |

Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Landry got fooled on the pump fake, he took a little hesitation step and that allowed Moss to blow by.
Shit happens when you're dealing with a QB and WR on top of their game. |

Hall missed jamming him on the line as well, could have changed the whole play. |

Shit happens when you're dealing with a QB and WR on top of their game.
Both of Moss' TD's were sight adjustments that I don't think any other passing tandem in the league could have made. The first one was a more subtle "hey, I'm taking this inside", and the second was an in route that turned into a go when the Redskins didn't have Landry deep and Brady's first two reads were covered. The pass rush does have to get to him on that play. The Maroney receptions were just holes in the scheme though. It's 2009, and we can't leave running backs uncovered, or matched up against lineman anymore. |

Laron probably has the speed to match Moss, but he was a step or two behind cuz he didn't pick up on the go route. I can't argue w/ Moss' talent level or the fact that very few guys can cover him, just saying on that particular play the TD wasn't inevitable by any means. Moss never got jammed at the line (nothing to do w/ Laron) and then our FS didn't pick-up the route. |

I almost think this topic is worth it's own thread. Laron has yet to live up to his 7th overall status in the draft. He's just not a dominant FS. For those who may wish to muddy this fact w/ the fallacious claim Landry is playing out of position: don't say it. He was a FS for the most part at LSU. He played a center field type roll and opposing offenses rarely passed deep on his squad. We basically drafted him to play out of position opposite Sean. Anyway, I'm starting to lose my patience w/ him. I think I see a lack of intensity there...curious to hear what others see. |
Re: The redskins performance tonight will be considered a failure if....
Yeah, the success of the defensive scheme requires Landry to make all the downfield plays. I don't think he's around the ball quite well enough for the scheme to be successful yet. When he does get there, Landry has been great, but he's just not enough of a factor yet. Landry needs to be everywhere, not just between the hashes.
