Squarely I hope :). Honestly rewatching the highlights makes me a Marko maniac. It's not just how he runs routes and pulls the pigskin in. On the long pass to Cooley it was Mitchell blocking the hell out of the DB to let Cooley pick up extra yards. And then he's right there to give a hand when Cooley hits the deck. I see why CP like the kid...i have a feeling there's lots to like there. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Marko simply has to be on this team. It is going to be a travishamockery if he gets cut. Forget the TD. I was more impressed that he always seemed to be blocking or doing the other things he needed to be doing. Never did we see him just standing there.
Mason is almost on the same level except I am less convinced he is a starter level player than Mitchell. I do think Mason is the best 3rd string back we have. Hell we have too many good rbs.
Absolutely. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
One last prop I'll give JC tonight is, well, something been said over and over again: give him some actual time in the pocket and he makes good decisions and good throws. Go back and watch the highlights and it's just so obvious (sometimes the live action moves too quick for me). Jason gets it done when given the opportunity...
...that will be the key to the season. Can the line get better and hold up for 16+ games? |

If it happens, let me know when you're leaving and I'll meet you there. We can both kick them in the nuts. :) Remember the personal foul called on the bench? It turns out Jerry Gray called an official by his first name and was told that wasn't allowed. Blache said he was told Gray cussed and said that was wrong because Gray never cusses. When he heard the other excuse he went off about the official and said that was a lame excuse and the official had changed it because he knows Gray doesn't cuss. Do the officials make these rules up as they go along? |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Nice to see things clicking, though there's still work to be done, no doubt. But if JC gets some time and can get his rhythm, he's got a gun. I'm not so surprised to see JC stepping up--it takes time to learn this system, and offense is generally behind D in preseason. We know this every year, but still we freak out!
Mason looked good--and he even threw a good block on a blitz, if I recall. Love to see him make it. And if Marko doesn't make it, yes, nuts should be kicked. Squarely. Barnes and Tryon looked better on the few plays I noticed (the pick was a gimme, but, hey! He caught it!) Smooty looked good, but Wes W wasn't in there. Moss fried us, but I'll chalk that up to his ability and Brady's. Still, we've gotta tighten it up back there! Blades hit that caused the fumble was brutal! I really think he's a baller and he's learning from London, no doubt. And kudos to the staff for the quick challenge there! Penalties gotta stop--obviously. One more thing I really liked: JC standing in and taking the hit, but getting the ball to Betts. That's impressive. And loved the pump fake on the TD. We've played 3 extremely tough Ds and it will help us down the road, I'm sure. Let's just keep growing. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
so r we saying that colt doesn't make the team now..??
|
Re: I Was impressed!!!
I'm impressed with Campbell tonight. He wasn't perfect but he was making plays and looks like he can only get better. I loved the pump to fake out the defender for the touchdown. That was classic. Hopefully he continues to work hard and he'll be able to put it all together sometime this season.
Word...I won't call myself a Cerrato fan just yet but i'm starting to respect the guy's decisions. DT and Kelly last year starts to look pretty genius if they open things up in the reg season as they did tonight.
I was wrong when...I said Kelly was wasted pick and Devin Thomas was our great hope. Kelly is a better NFL prospect no doubt. I think he could breakout even though he's missed time and basically is a rookie (again). Devin has so much physical ability. I really hope 1) he can start to develop into a legit WR (that one catch in coverage was super impressive) and/or 2) Zorn puts together plays that just get the ball into Thomas' hands...sort of like stringing him along so Devin doesn't regress. Use him, use him, use him.
I agree I've been saying this all along it's preseason don't get to excited, now that's out of the way damm we looked good a little shakey in the middle but we definitely showed we have a pulse and a pretty strong one at that. JC looked good when he takes 5 or 7 step drops DF's watchout. Hall gave to much cushion. Smoot, Tryon & Barnes looked good at times. Mason, Aldridge & Dorsey ran well. DT, MK & MM look like they will be good weapons. We are coming together next week rest all our starters. HTTR |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
I missed most of the first half last night. I am watching it now on NFL network. The opening drive we looked pretty good. Campbell was pretty sharp. I liked seeing Thomas and Kelly on the field. After the penalty on the opening kick..and kicking from the 25 the Rayner put the ball almost in the end zone. I dont believe Suisham has the kind of leg strength.

Re: I Was impressed!!!
Lots of good things from last nite. A couple great things. First the response in the second quarter from the entire team. The defensive got it stuff together and JC lead the team back to tie it up. I thought that was just huge. JC preformance is what we have been waiting for and he looked great. O-line did pretty good, would have like to seen us open a couple more holes for the back, but they held up well. The defense tighten in the second which was big, because they were getting kicked around a little bit in the first quarter. I think you got to give Coach Blanche a lot of credit for that with mixing up the D calls. Woulda like to seen Brady under a little more pressure and I think D Hall didnt play as bad as it intially seemed. His coverage was pretty good on that touchdown to Moss. I though Smoot played pretty well and I also think Rodgers not being on the field really shows how important his presence really is. I tell you, I would love to find an excuse to keep Mason this year. The second half was crazy. Barnes got his interception to solidify his spot on the team. Colt needs to stop throwing picks in the red zone. This is really really bad. His toss to Marko was a great way to respond, but another red zone still leaves this competition wide open. Great game, just love to see JC gettin it done.
so r we saying that colt doesn't make the team now..??
Are you saying his performance solidified his spot on the team? I dont think he played well at all, and I dont see the "growth" from last year, outside of his feet. His arm is average at best, and his mechanics are still horrible. He isnt making good reads, the INT wasnt even close, and for the second week in a row thats a redzone turnover. Ultimately, I think its gonna have alot to do with how Daniel plays next week. Also.......did I mention I HATE "gunslingers"!!! You can have the Favre/Romo/Brennan types, give me a game manager that doesnt turn the ball over every single game. Combined with a good running game, and a solid defense....thats the combination for a great team IMO. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Overall after watching tonight, I am very pleased with what we did as an overall team... JC looked very good and our Offense actually looked like.. well a real offense lol. Albert hammered Brady lol but Moss destroyed our secondary, that's the only concern but it is Brady and Moss...
Marko Mitchell is a stud and should move ahead of ARE in the depth chart, atleast to the 4 slot. Kelly is our #2 for sure, and Thomas looked ok. My favorite play was JC to Cooley for 70+ yards!!!! Big Year again for Cooley.
Cooley may be the best YACer we have. He's impossible to take down once he gets a head of steam. Took a gang tackle to finally stop him. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
We palyed a solid game. Lots of bright spots with the newer players.
Special Teams, especially covering punt returns, needs work at this point. We let several very good ST players go this off season and it shows. I think this is correctable but it needs work. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
As for special teams, their kick coverage was much improved from the Pittsburgh game.
|
Re: I Was impressed!!!
The reasons Campbell will succeed this year are:
1- Second year in Zorn system 2- OL has improved 3- and the most import one is the emergence of Kelly, Thomas, Fred Davis and Marko Mitchell (4 offensive weapons that didn't produce or weren't on the team last year).
Don't forget it's a contract year for him as well. He's playing for the benjamims. |
Let's not drink too much of that "Soups" kool-aid. We still stalled out 3 consecutive series with bad inaccurate throws. How exactly did he redeem himself? With the TD? If we're keeping score, he had two big gaffs for his one gem. The sack was probably more damning than the pick. Plus he still has that silly sidearm throw. Zorn said last year that he's got to adjust his throwing motion to make it in this league. Colt just isn't making good decisions. We'll see if Daniel does any better next week. But right now, Brennan isn't proving how an extra year in the league is giving him much of an advantage over Chase Daniel. |

I agree, JC played as good as he could possibly play and he looked good. But like most on here who dont put too much stock in the preseason (when JC looked terrible) I'm not ready to crown him an all-pro just yet. The thing that concerns me is the O line, I thought they looked vulnerable to being pushed around. |

I think Moss dropped a potential first down. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
you know what impressed me more than anything, the fact that after Heyer got called for a hold, the Skins were put in 2nd and 18. Last year, its over, drive has stalled maybe the skins get a field goal. This time, zorn picked a good couple of plays and the chains were moved without too much effort. That is what gives me the most hope.

Re: I Was impressed!!!
I was impressed too. NE is one of the best teams in the NFL. Very proud of the way the team hung in there after getting down 17-7. And very proud how JC responded too. He missed a TD to Moss and the offense went 3 straight 3 and outs. I like how he brought us back. He was throwing with confidence.

I agree that the 3 and outs hurt the Defense, but It looked to me we stalled when we started to try to be more conservative... I would like to see the Skins hit on the pass and make the run game more effective. When you run on 1st and second and get only 2 yard combined that puts JC in 3rd and long! Not a position we want to be in... Not a position the o-line is gonna look good in either! I think the Skins looked good last night... We stayed strike for strike with a team that no one will be surprised if they are super bowl bound! |

Stick with the play action passes downfield until the Pats prove they can stop it. Receivers were open all over the place. We bailed them out by going to the running game and short passing attack. But it's pre-season, so they're trying to work on all phases of the game, etc. No worries. It was awesome to see a defense have no answers for our passing attack. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Wow people will always find a way to hate on JC. My buddy called me on the overthrow and was complaining. It's like he forgot everything before and after that one play.
Screw everyone. Thats why at times I hope campbell doesnt get a deal and succeeds elsewhere, some skins "fans" really piss me off. |

Re: I Was impressed!!!
A few things impressed me last night.
1. Jason looks good when he has time to make a play his intermediate, short, and long balls looked really good 2. Mrcus Mason needs to be on the football team 3. The defense battled back after getting torched. The guys will fight all year 4. Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly are the real deal. 5.Marko Mitchell will be on this football team 6. Colt Brennan is not ready for the spotlight he looked really bad again \st the number 1 defense of the pats. looked ok against scrubs 7.Orakpo made some relly nice plays but Pats oline handled our guys and got them of balance with thier passing game. 8.Do we really need Rock Cartwright? 9. Ladell Betts will be on the team. Aldridge had one good quarter not sold on him at all. 10. LIKED THE WAY THE 1st team defense created turnovers in the second half 11.Kevin Barnes will make plays in this league 12. WE MADE WAY TO MANY MISTAKES WITH PENALTIES! |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
so do we say that rock doesn't make the team now, and dorsey makes it in his place, or mason??

Dont get me wrong I do love Rock, and all the little things he does for this team. BUT.....we really didnt miss him last night. Thomas looked servicable on KR, and Mason/Dorsey also looked pretty good. Id really like to see more of Alridge in the last preseason game, for the little bit he played, he looked really good to me, albeit against the 3rd stringers. |

How did he redeem himself? 2 chances to put points on the board were squarely affected by Brennan's play. The interception is the second in the redzone in two weeks, JC would be crucified for those type of errors. And a sack instead of throwing the ball away when you are in FG range is another bad decision. I don't really have a true preference as to which one stays and which one goes, I would like to see both get solid playing time against the Jags. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
I think JC is done till the season starts. No reason he or TC plays the next game.
|
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Let Daniel play the first half and CB closes it out.
|
Re: I Was impressed!!!
To be honest I want to see Chase first against jackonsville. Colt is very reckless with the football this year. I wanted the guy to suceed but his redzone play is been abmismal this year. Making downright dump decisions. Things a rookie could get away with, but a second year guy, his decision making is worse. When he took the sack to knock us out of field goal range, and the fuckn intercecption on the goal line. I am mean come zip the ball in there if you are going to stare down the reciever. Don't throw some weak armed pass. You gotta be smarter if you want to make this football team.

If you watch them, they are careful with the ball and avoid taking stupid Favre-like chances with the ball. The playing styles of Brady and Manning are very different from the playing styles of folks like Favre and Romo. It is only the latter folks that you can put in the category of "gunslinger," that is, folks who are reckless with the ball. |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
This has nothing to do with the Redskins, but I have been really impressed this summer with the Packers. The D looks sharp, and Aaron Rodgers as well.
Ok, back to the Redskins |
Re: I Was impressed!!!
Packers do look awesome.. Rodgers is playing out of his mind and Capers has that defense making big plays. will it carry over into the season? time will tell

The offensive approach seemed to differ somewhat from what we've seen in the past. There seemed to be more of a concentrated effort on getting the ball down the field, more 5-7 step drops which coinside with Campbell's arm strength. He certainly seems to be more comfortable with the deeper drops. |

Not sure I would qualify Tom Brady as a "gunslinger" either. For me a gunslinger is personified in Favre, Romo has some of it too. A qb who thinks he can get the ball inbetween those 2-4 bad guys, and has the arm to back it up, most of the time. The problem is for every Favre, or even Romo who can back it up a dozen wannabees fail out because their INT/TD ratio is a killer. I definitely don't want a gunslinger, but I would take Manning or Brady. |

That is all because the o-line could protect. You just can't do 5-7 step drops with longer routes if you can't block. It's funny how we football fans are: a few weeks back ALL we could talk about was the o-line troubles. Now, they play well and we all don't mention it (me included) and rave about JC and Zorn. Those plays can't occur without decent pass pro. Lord protect the health of the o-line!!! (PS Yeah, the Pack looks good--my father-in-law keeps sending me texts gloating about it. Circle the Minn-GB games on your non-skins schedule!) |
