Re: 2009 Practice squad
I think the last two spots were used for LB and WR...
Woodson Among 8 Signed to Practice Squad Onrea Jones WR is the other WR. 5 teams in 1yr is worrysome but he is a local boy which is what DS and Cerrato like. Sounds like he had a good preason with the Cards. I'm not sure who they picked up for the 8th spot...I thought it might be LB Young. |

Really? Dude was an undrafted FA who didn't even start in college. Not saying it couldn't happen but right now I think it's a small possibility he even becomes a starter let alone a Pro Bowler. We're pretty deep at DT. That's a good thing.
Yeah, i was making a joke, but i did think he played exceptionally well. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
I didn't see this anywhere so thought I would provide the info....
PRESS RELEASE* For Immediate Release* December 2, 2009* REDSKINS SIGN WR KEITH ELOI TO PRACTICE SQUAD LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed wide receiver Keith Eloi to their practice squad. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Eloi spent training camp with the Redskins before being released on Sept. 5, 2009. In four preseason contests with Washington, Eloi caught three passes for 38 yards. Eloi played his last two collegiate seasons at Nebraska-Omaha after transferring from William Rainey Harper College, where he was a two-time junior college All-American. For his career at Nebraska-Omaha, Eloi registered 57 catches for 749 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned 25 kickoffs for 663 yards (26.5 avg.) and one touchdown. Eloi, who attended Lely High School in Naples, Fla., was born Nov. 1, 1984. Eloi will wear jersey No. 16. My two favorites are back on the team; Mason and now Eloi. ;) |

Finally, a PS player I've heard of besides Mason.

Re: 2009 Practice squad
I think it's funny, I have not figured out how the system works?
Lose an OG hire a RB Lose a OT hire a QB Lose a RB hire a LT Lose a TE hire a FB Lose a RB hire a QB Lose a DE hire a WR The problem with the Skins is they view the PS as a place to keep the extra players instead of the place to keep and develope young talent. |

Last year, when we had relatively few injuries, the skins did not initiate many practice squad changes. practice squad turnover was created almost entirely by other teams wanting to sign our PS players to the active roster. Conversely, this year, we've suffered a rash of injuries. When players get hurt and/or IRed, we're forced to adjust the practice squad accordingly. We've also elevated players from our PS to the active roster almost every year. I dont see how the skins utilize their practice squad as being remotely wrong or any different from that of any other team. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
Um, only last yr did anyone take from our practice squad and that was a Lineman I believe. There might have been a second to be taken but prior to that there have been little as far as other teams taking our players.
I understand, You lose a OL most teams would bump someone up from the practice squad and bring another OL in to fill the vacancy. We have not done that this yr. We lost an OL and a RB was brought in, Alridge. We lost the LT and Mason was brought in. We lose Portis and Levi Jones was brought in. We lose TE Cooley and they bring in a FB. In other words they are not replacing position for position. Only 1 or 2 players came from the practice squad this yr. The rest came from off the team. So my statement is not as that far off....especially for this yr. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
Teams typically don't replace a position for a position when it comes to the practice squad. It's a developmental unit, it's not a backup for guys you lose to IR.

It WAS lose Punter, demote Cooley, but then Cooley was lost and threw the entire system off. |

Press Release: REDSKINS SIGN JAMES ROBINSON TO PRACTICE SQUAD; RELEASE KEITH ELOI - EXTREMESKINS.com PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release December 8, 2009 REDSKINS SIGN JAMES ROBINSON TO PRACTICE SQUAD; RELEASE KEITH ELOI LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed wide receiver James Robinson to their practice squad. To make room on the practice squad, the Redskins released wide receiver Keith Eloi. Robinson (6-3, 200) has spent parts of the 2009 season on both the Cleveland Browns’ and Miami Dolphins’ practice squads. He signed as a member of the Browns’ practice squad on Nov. 18, but was released on Dec. 1. Robinson originally entered the NFL as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins on Aug. 10, but was later released on Sept. 5. He re-signed with the Dolphins’ practice squad on Sept. 7, but was released on Nov. 3. Robinson will wear jersey No. 14. He played collegiately at Butler (Kan.) Community College. Eloi was signed to the Redskins’ practice squad on Dec. 2. Maybe Eloi can be brought back under the new management and hopefully developed. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
Ahh yeah caught that earlier but forgot to post it. Wonder what they see in Robinson over Eloi, not that I really know enough about either to say that they shouldn't have made the move.

Re: 2009 Practice squad
I think Eloi is just seriously raw. I think at the high school level he has so much talent he over shadows everyone else. I think at the college level where you might have 1 player at each position who is great while the others are just going through the motion hoping someone picks them up.
Eloi strikes me as the player that is definitly not the best WR of any bunch but is most likely the best on his team. Most likely never taught the finer points of the position cause college does not have time to teach that. Players come in and are gone two or three years later skipping out on their Junior or Senior year to apply for the draft. On any given Pro NFL team his abilities create interest but with out the finer points and with out any position coach wanting to take the time one on one to develope him he will be in this position. On a practice squad, off a practice squad. What he really needs to do is find the best of the best, like a Jerry Rice or someone who can spend the time with him during one off season and work with him every day. Maybe by next year he would be ready to help out the team a little.... like Kelly. :) One ball a game. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
my only question about it is, I don't see WR depth as much of a need, so why not bring in, um i dont know OL? or LB's? I don't get much of the logic. Now maybe they try to mirror opponents, and use them for practice that way, I don't know. But if they are using it as a developmental tool, then other positions would top my list...

maybe we're not interested in any linemen out there.. i don't know.. kind of hard to say |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
The practice squad is used more as a scout team that practices along with the starters during the week and helps them get ready for the opponent. I'm not really sure what the reasoning is behind selecting different players

And frankly who cares. I've never heard of anyone stressing the importance of making sound practice squad moves in building a winner. |

Eloi played for no one and this new guy played for Cleveland and Miami...so I have no clue what the reasoning for any of the moves are any more. |
Re: 2009 Practice squad
My oppinion which is worth probably nothing is the practice squad is for teams to keep and develope players for the future. Apparently it's not.
On a side note just heard on 94.4FM that someone was moved up from PS and Alridge was resigned. :) |
