Re: Defense = Disappointment

I think the defense was definitely a disappointment, the secondary let an inexperienced wr corps look good. Even when they were in the right position they missed tackles(Smoot and Landry come to mind) and Deangelo played terribly. There were some positives and some guys had great efforts but as a unit they underperformed. When the Giants tried to attack the heart of the defense they got nowhere except for a couple of runs by Bradshaw, but when they attacked our so called skilled positions in space they made us look bad. This lost was a team effort the defense definitely did not play well enough and with the exception of a long, when it didn't really matter touchdown drive against the prevent, the offense didn't play well enough either.
We had ~300 yards of total offense. They had over 350. Maybe, in the alternate dimension you live in where the defense is never responsible for losses, and always responsible for wins, that can be debateable, but here, it's probably made the difference in a 7 point game.

Not to excuse two turnovers, but despite what last year might have led us to believe, those things actually occur in football games.
How many of those yards came on our last drive against a soft defense and how many of those yards resulted in points? Defense looked bad offense looked bad also, this one stunk and it was a team effort. However, I consider the source.
O, Gee, what happend again when jason fumbled. Oh yeah thats right, Osi ran it for a touchdown. Let's say that doesn't happen, then the score would be 17-16 Redskins. Campbell runs, throws the football 4 yards past the line of scrimmage...FOR A INT. Let's say that doesn't happen, then we could of had mabe a field goal, or would have pinned them deep in their end of the field. Score could have been 20-16 Us had neither of those of happend, or one of those it could have been 17-16. Jason played way tooo stupid today. Quit backing him up, we get it you like him, but he played awful today. Should have run it on some QB draws more..Next week he better rebound..
I never said I liked JC. I criticized him for his mistakes. But I criticized him reasonably.

Hitting 73% of your passes with a ypa above 7 is neither stupid nor awful.

Re: Defense = Disappointment

The defense reminded me of last year. They kept the score down but when we need a stop they can't do it. However the defense did not lose this game. This one is 100% on the offense. Defense gave them the ball deep in NY's territory and we had to settle for 3. That was awful. JC's turnover led two 7 points and we lost by 6. There is your game right there.

We didn't have the ball long enough for that single offensive failure to matter.

Now, if you score a touchdown there AND you don't fumble away that defensive TD, and you don't get intercepted on a pass over the line, then we probably win the game in spite of the defense, but do we really need to be flawless on offense before we admit the defense choked the big one?

Re: Defense = Disappointment

I think the defense is a disappointment because they are supposed to be the stronger part of our team and that didn't show.

The DBs played terrible, since they couldn't cover wideouts who had no more than 1-year of experienced.

Landry seemed to be more concerned with hitting Brandon Jacob as payback for last year (leading to the personal foul) than actually playing the game.

Our line didn't generate enough rush to affect the passing game.

The offense had its issues too (but what a freaking concept, I'll talk about that in the thread for that topic!) but it is hard to overlook these deficiencies in the defense. Once again, let's stop pin the fault of a bad game on a single unit or player. Just as it takes a team to win, you also lose as a team.
Yeah. We should just play the games over 4 days from now on. Then, when the Giants have like 14, 15 play drives (NFL average = 6), the defense can rest without actually having to get themselves off the field.

Good idea.
Lets do the math:

Giants scored 23 pts, the defense gave up 16 pts of those points and the offense gave up 7 pts. The offense scored 17 points.

If no offensive turnover the score would be 17-16 Skins.

Some of the defense played well most of the time. Some of the defense played well very little of the time. You can't win like that.

So who gave up the most points? The offense or the defense? Who scored the most points? Offense or defense? :)

Re: Defense = Disappointment
Well, it's really obvious that the biggest problem for this team today was the defense. Any discussion of why we lost has to start with the defense not being able to get off the field. Two turnovers is good. Andre Carter and LaRon Landry each made a play. So far, we're creating the big plays.

But it's going to be tough to get off the field all year with Smoot and Hall. We had trouble getting off the field at the end of last year, and that was when we had Shawn Springs in the starting lineup.

No one is going to throw at Carlos Rogers this year, so we might need to get in the market for a cover corner.

I thought Rocky Mac played a really good game today. But when we start 3 guys who can't play man coverage on defense, we might have to go zone. It doesn't seem like we have a choice.
I just don't understand your thinking. Improvements need to be made across the board. Defense and offense. But to say defense lost this game is ridiculous.
I just don't understand your thinking. Improvements need to be made across the board. Defense and offense. But to say defense lost this game is ridiculous.
I'm not in disagreement with you on what's ailing the offense. I thought that was established.

The big problem with the defense is never, ever going to be any more evident than it was today. We had one three and out. Then the two turnover drives. THE GIANTS DID NOT PUT THEIR PUNTER ON THE FIELD UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF THE THIRD QUARTER.

We won't know for 5 weeks or so just how much of our defensive struggles today were because the Giants are a great passing team. Maybe none. Maybe a lot. But considering how thoroughly dominated we were through the air on defense, I don't see how anyone could not see the giant gaping hole on the team.

And no, the offense was not perfect. They made two costly errors, and couldn't open up any running lanes. But the passing game was the only thing that worked today.

Or you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.

Well, if all we did on offense is run Portis three times and punt, we might not have to worry about those damn turnovers. Unless we fumble.

My argument is that the defense didn't suck as much as the offense. This loss cannot be blamed on the defense, certainly not more so than the offense.

You kind of ran out of steam around the time you claimed that we got away from running the ball. The rest of the time, you've just been playing catch-up.

Theory: they stuck you with Rams-Seahawks out there.

For help in assessing your wrongness you might want to watch the Zorn press-conference on redskins.com.

You don't have to stick up for them, just realize that they didn't lose this game and they didn't suck more than the offense.
You don't have to stick up for them, just realize that they didn't lose this game and they didn't suck more than the offense.
Well, okay, I guess you have an turnover-related argument as far as costing us a winnable game. But if you take out ALL of the offensive contributions, yards, points, turnovers, and just look at the defensive contributions, you have two big plays mixed in with a completely uncompetitive game.

In reality, we only lost by 6. If I had just gone through the defensive plays only, I would have assumed a 14-17 point loss. And isn't that the real measuring stick here?

Wait, what? You're confused. If you take away the offensive contributions from both teams we would still be left with the offense spotting them 6 pts. Don't know how you can attribute the offense giving up 6 pts to the defense.

We're fine, they only had 250 yards for god sake. Plus, have you seen our CB play bump-and-run coverage? They'd get burned like charcoal.

In my mind the only TD we scored today was on a fake fg, the td at the end was a pitty td in the fact they ny was playing prevent d, and quit applying pressure on the offense. We had plenty of chances to come back, but like always the offense was anemic.

I agree that the NYG receivers are really underrated- only because their combined years experience is so low. Smith has been one of the best route runners I've seen since college- and he rarely ever drops a ball. Hixon is up and coming and Nicks seems to have been a steal in the draft.

But our secondary play was the pits yesterday... sloppy tackling, bad angles, nonsensical scheme (or maybe our guys are just playing to headhunt/make big plays).

Re: Defense = Disappointment

I think the D did a good job considering the offence couldn't move the ball. They only gave up one touchdown, the offence gave up the other. Campbell sustain drives give the D rest and I think we could go all the way baby.

Re: Defense = Disappointment

The big issue I have with the defense was that 4th quarter drive that seemed to go on for ever . The Giants came away with 3 points but took off 7 minutes off the clock .

Poor tackling in the secondary will have to be addressed, they need to play closer on third down . Manningham should have been stopped by Smoot but he missed, Carter was too slow to the edge and Hall was flat out embarressed .

Horton was too aggressive he took himself out of too many plays, Orakopo was a none factor . One comedy moment was on one play where we got penetration and two or three Skins were in the backfield quickly and everyone seemed shocked and paused long enough for Eli to take off and Landry was looking for revenge everytime he was in 30 yards of Barber ...

All that said though the D did have its high points . It not allow a 100 yard receiver ...held the best rushing attack in the NFL in 2008 to 103 yards total . Barber had an average of 2.9 yards per carry and fletcher played out of his socks today ... but that is all going to be overlooked ...
