when I wrote "posted on a different thread but applies here" i meant, if you read it, or dont' want to re-read it, skip it. its not like i'm trying to hide that fact... its not the difficult to skip it- but the fact is we have like 10 threads about the same topic...upset fans/zorn on the hot seat/upset players/detroit game, etc...sometime posts apply- I am sorry if it bothers you though- won't do it again but I don't see what the big deal is.
This actually isn't an "I'm Upset With Zorn" thread. It is about the expectations Zorn was to have coming into his first ever head coaching job in the NFL. Considering he was previously a QB's Coach and then elevated to Head Coach for the first time in his career what did the Redskins Front Office REALISTICALLY expect the success of Jim Zorn to be?...And are they allowing sufficient time to be successful? (I think Zorn haters and apologists came in here and thought it it was business as usual by making it all about Zorn again.) |
Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
Well, at the end of last season a lot of people were saying "look out, the Dolphins are a perennial contender now. Look at what Parcells has done turning from 1-15 to 11-5." To which I believe my response was "It's been one year, let's see what happens in 2009" And now they're 0-2. Will they still be good in the long run? Perhaps. I think they have a lot of question marks. But they are 0-2.
But it was also to sort of point out that one reason Zorn is on the hot seat is because fortunes can change from bad to good in an incident (and then back to 0-2 again), and the expectation is just about any coach should be able to jump right in and be successful. Not a fair expectation, to be sure.
Thanks for replying to the original question Smoot. And don't think I'm not reading over you and Matty bustin' my balls about Armstrong : ) (edit) OMG!!!...LOL...I just saw the poll about the OL in the sidebar. Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
Why is it not CERRATO on the hot seat??? He's the GM/Pres/WTF-ever who hired Zorn, plus about a million other bad decisions. Impeach Cerrato first, it makes more sense to do that mid-season than firing the coach! Then a new, hopefully competent GM can get a feel for the team and be ready to make off-season decisions, including the fate of ZZZZZorn. Am I wrong here?

So we really only have last year and this year to work from where Cerrato has full responsibility for personnel.
-FA signing of Dock at a reasonable number. - keeping coaching staff mostly intact to support a 1st year coach who has never been even a coordinator at the NFL level. - Horton - Haynesworth, don't want to jinx him, but so far so good. - Kelly, looks like he'll be solid. - Patience in the 2009 draft and winding up with Orakpo - Thomas, Rinehart, Tyron, jury's out but they're all still on the roster so they can't be total busts. - Kevin Barnes, solid pick - Hunter Smith - Jarmon appears to have been a good choice in the supplemental draft, a lower pick would've been better than a 3rd, OK that's a slight negative. - Will Montgomery, should be a solid backup - Re-signing D. Hall, jury's out on that one but had he gotten away it would've been "Cerrato's an idiot for letting D. Hall walk" So what are the "million bad decisions"? |

For some reason everyone seems to be fine with that.
Not everyone Tee. The loudest, or in this case, the ones who write the most, are the most heard. To answer what the thread asks, I think what you should expect is for a coach to come in and implement a system that will benefit the team towards being successful. I think the coach should be given the time to put such a system in place, obtain players he wants, and allow it enough time to see if the team can comprehend and flourish in it. I think to hire an inexperienced HC to do such a thing without a reasonable amount of time to do it is unreasonable and foolish. |

Well I know it is not contested when people talk about who should be the head coach next year. That's why the thread was created because no one is asking why Zorn has such a short leash being a first time head coach. That's also something that has irritated me as of late because I'd hate to think our front office has the same sentiment/expectations as our fans. This year and last would be fruitless if Zorn was just a two year filler coach while we waited for the availability of the big name coaches for the big splash in 2010. Needless to say that is gross mishandling of management and personnel by the front office if that is the case. |

Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
We all heard the comments that Sonny made to Zorn about calling a time-out if you call for the RB to pass for him in the red-zone on 3rd down. I wonder what Zorn would have done as a QB in the same situation? Any thoughts?
Just wondering how much ego Zorn has and if he ever turns things around on himself. That can get you in trouble in a hurry, and he seems to be in trouble.... in a hurry. Also, Why doesn't Danny take the easier road and tell Zorn that if the offense doesn't start scoring, we are going to have to bring in a more experience OC to help him. It isn't like you can't fire the OC and not the HC. Friendship or not, it has to be an option. Zorn may be doing a lot better right now if he had a more experienced offensive coordinator to help him while he adjusts from QB coach to head coach. |

I pray that the fans had nothing to do with the Fassel decision or any other one. Fans are idiots. I hope that their voice is not taken into account. The fact is, Zorn is not really on the hot seat until Danny issues the dreaded "statement of confidence." Such statements ironically legitimize criticism. If the owner is not concerned about a coach, then then the owner says nothing, which so far has been the case.
You say you pray the fans had nothing to do with the Fassel decision, well obviously you weren't paying a great deal of attention to the selection process. Just about everyone on this board can/will concur in the fact that had it not been for people like those represented here as well as the many radio talk shows and numerous other outlets that voiced their dissaproval of Jim Fassel, in all likelehood he would have been the next HC here after Gibbs decided to step down. To suggest fans are idiots.....well I'm a fan, have been a fan for a long, long time just like most of our fellow members here and we don't want to put ourselves in the category of idiots. We're trying to get beyond the Robert Henson philosophy. |
Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
Fans are not stupid, but they act pretty irrationally a good portion of the time. But that's fine, that's what fans do. The danger is when ownership does that. But anyway, we don't have Fassel in large part due to he and Vinny simply not being able to work together more than anything else. The fans' protest of the hiring has been way overblown.

Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
This may seem like another Zorn thread but this is asking an underlying question that I haven't seen asked or discussed.
Jim Zorn was hired as a first time ever head coach last year. He started his rookie coaching stint and led our team to 8-8. In only his second year of coaching... How is it that our 2nd year head coach is on the Hot Seat? Now I'm not making excuses for him, nor do I think that he has been showing his coaching worth as of late but the question begs...How is firing him even a consideration at this point? Zorn is in his 2nd year of head coaching for the first time in his career. What expectations were there of this rookie head coach and were they realistic? Zorn has barely seen his initial rookie player class play in their second year in the NFL. Would you contemplate cutting D. Thomas, M. Kelly or F. Davis around now because they didn't look good?...No, because there wouldn't be an realistic expectation of them necessarily doing well. What are the REALISTIC expectations currently being placed on Zorn and was there ever a REALISTIC possibility of success given the parameters that Zorn held being hired as the head coach of the Washington Redskins?
He's on the hot seat because of Danny Synder's past history. He's also on the hot seat because there is an unsual amount of talented superbowl winning HC coaches available. Billick, Cowher, Holmgren and Shanahan all have superbowl championship rings. Holmgren was the architect of the Seattle's WCO that Zorn knows and is installing here. Shanahan is a veteran in the WCO with the Broncos and goes all the way back to his days as an OC with the 49ers w/ Joe Montana/Steve Young and Jerry Rice. Zorn is like an associate instructor in the WCO these guys are like the Dean's of the WCO. As much as i like Zorn and want him to succeed, there is no doubt in my mind that Holmgren or Shanahan could come in here right know and not change a thing except take over playcalling and we would win more games. The question is are we gonna let Zorn grow and be pateint or are we gonna swicth HC and hope that the change doesn't set us back? |

I don't know exact specifics of either's involvement, but I think it's pretty obvious that The Danny is hands-on as far as personnel goes. Blank on the other hand put football decisions in the hands of an actual GM, and got positive results right away. Again, I have no proof, but I'd be willing to bet Blank's involvement pales in comparison to Snyder's. |

In Mosley's column about whether Zorn will last the season he recalls another NFC East coach who barely held on to his job after the 06 season. Tom Coughlin went on to coach the Giants to a win in the Super Bowl.

Trust me, it doesn't. I will say that Blank has done a great job of putting together a solid organization after Petrino, Vick, and Parcells blew up in his face. But he still attends draft workouts, has dinner with potential free agents and draft picks (with Dimitroff and Smith), just like Snyder (and other owners do). But he is involved, yet not intrusive. Just like Snyder, and many other owners. |

Well, I think it's debateable that Snyder isn't intrusive. But I didn't know those points you just made about Blank's involvement. I guess the history of Snyderatto leaves the door wide open for so much skepticism. It's just a hunch, but my gut tells me when it's actually time to pull the trigger on a player, Blank backs off and Snyder... well not so much many cases. Again, purely speculation on my part. |

Though that sounds like a great success story for the giants, recreating their success is doubtful. We have to deal with the parameters in front of us and not rely on patterning our team around the wonderful stories of yesteryear. I think Cerrato has been doing a good job since he got his new title. I don't think we need to start from scratch. There is talent on this team. Re-tool maybe, re-start-no. Re: Zorn On The Hot Seat
If these three things didn't happen, no one would be talking about Zorn on a hot seat:
1. Orakpo roughing the passer negating a turnover in Rams territory in the 1st Quarter 2. Thomas drops a TD pass 3. Sellers drops a TD pass All this talk about play calling, but it's the players that have to execute the plays called. I've watched the game three times, and except for a few plays (critical that they were) I think they played an excellent all around game. The bottom line is they got the W. Oh yeah, the booooos were uncalled for really. If you were one of the ones booing, stay home. |
