Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Based on this rumor it sounds as if Gibbs would be in a team president type of role, he would hire a GM and help hire a coach. I don't think he would be heavily involved in personnel decisions, that's what the GM is for.
Say what you want about Gibbs 2.0, the guy knows people, he knows how to build relationships, and he values character. Basically the complete opposite of Vinny for the most part. Gibbs would add instant credibility back to the front office and give us a real shot at getting some quality football people in here.
After I calmed myself down I actually read the article. I agree that he could work out in the Bill Parcells type of role. For this to work though he has to hire a GM and a head coach. Now I am kinda looking forward to this. You are correct he is a good people person. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
If Gibbs comes back it just total proves that Dan Snyder knows nothing about football. Its very similar to Vinny taking play-calling away for Zorn this week. It emascualted Zorn. If Dan hires Gibbs again, he is kind of emasculating himself when it comes to football. He will be finally admiting what we all know, and that is he does not know how to own an NFL franchise. It would also mean that some day when Gibbs steps down again, that Snyder has to continue to hire GM's or Presidents or whatever you want to call the guy that actual runs the team, because it can never be Snyder again.

Well, hopefully, if this happened, when gibbs stepped down again, we would have had a successful GM and Head Coach in place for several years. I think that if Snyder sees success under a GM, and compares that to the disaster thats occurred over the past decade, he'd stick with the GM/HC model for years to come. Additionally, good GMs often stay in place for decades, even when head coaches come and go. So if Gibbs made a good GM hire, then hopefully the guy would be around for a long, long time. I'd love to get Ghris Polian in here. He's learned from the best and if he struggled, could always fall back on his dad for guidance. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Interesting reading from Hog Heaven:
Executive coach and consultant Scott Eblin listed nine management blunders by Snyder in running the Washington Redskins organization for his story on businessmanagementdaily.com. Among Snyder’s blunders: Live in the past, The Redskins continue to act as if they are a perennial contender and don’t deal with reality Manage things you don’t know about, Snyder’s front office is not up to the job Squeese your customers until they bleed, premium price for an inferior product Hire and fire rapidly, too much churn at the top operational position Accept no accountability, Snyder and Vinny Cerrato are the only constants in the last 10 years. Eblin consults on executive leadership and strategy and is the author of The Next Level: What Insiders Know About Executive Success. His litany of Snyder’s flawed approach to running the Redskins is already familiar to sports writers and bloggers who follow the team. It may be revealing to Sunday fans who think all problems can be fixed by swapping players and coaches. Since Eblin wrote his peice for a business site, I am surprised that he did not suggest a management fix for each blunder to apply to any business. There are management lessons to be learned–what not to do–watching Snyder’s approach. Eblin leaves it to the reader to form conclusions. The Danny, of course, isn’t running the football side of the Redskins as a business. He bought the team for the fun of running it–to hang out with “the guys,” to cut the next big deal, to associate with wealthy members of the NFL club. Pay him money and he’ll let you watch. In that, Snyder is playing with fire. Folks don’t give old line, 80 year old sports teams like the Redskins their loyalty. They give them their allegiance. Name another business model where customers wait years to do business with you becasue their deep existing relationship. Fans on the season ticket waiting list feel an active partnership with the team even though the franchise does not have capacity to seat them. Fans own the Redskins. Snyder owns the franchise rights to sell to them, along with the property and trademark rights to Washington Redskins. None of that gives him the right to mismanage the team. Follow the link to Scott Eblin’s story Learning What Not To Do From The Leadership of the Washington Redskins. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I hope this doesnt happen. If memory serves Gibbs is the guy who assembled most of these under-performing players so some of this mess rests on his shoulders. I think this organization needs to find a way to stop being stuck in the past and trying to recreate the glory days with the same old people.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I'm not to sure what to think. As team President only, he would be the guy hiring the GM and I would think he wouldn't have much say at which players we go with. This is the only way that a good head coach or GM would come our way. Joe carries a lot of respect in and out of the NFL. Danny might be able to get a big name or big GM if Joe's a buffer. I can't see Snyder making the same mistakes for another 10 years, although it is possible.
I think as team president alone he'd do well. He can build very good organizations. His second time around had some suspect deals, but as long as we sweep Dallas and Filthy I don't give a damn. Joe should do alright at building up management. JD is basically running JG Racing for him with the organization that he built. All Joe does is show up, wave his hand, talks to people, signs autographs, and gives really long track side prayers. |

Mike Wise said on his radio show that Gibbs PR guy denies this and it won't happen but I guess what else are they gonna say. It's not like they can confirm it and anything other then a denial will cause a sh*tstorm.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
First of all if it is true, kudos to SportsCurmudgeon who called this on multiple occassions last year.
Anyhow, just so happens I have a meeting with some of Gibbs peeps later today so maybe I can get some more scoop on this. The only rumor I'd ever heard up to this point was some sort of ownership stake, but maybe this ties into it? I don't know, will try to find out |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
From Jason Reid:
Source doubts a Gibbs return There's buzz at Pro Football Talk about the possibility of Joe Gibbs returning to the Redskins in advisory/consultant role -- but not as a head coach. Gibbs had dinner with owner Daniel Snyder in Charlotte before the Redskins lost to the Carolina Panthers and any interaction between those two naturally would stir talk. A person close to Gibbs, however, recently told me that he seriously doubted that Gibbs would return to the Redskins in any role because of everything he has going on with his racing team and family. The person maintained that stance in a text message I received minutes ago. Just in terms of the things I know about, Gibbs has NASCAR, his son Coy's motocross team, the Game Plan For Life ministry and his grandkids. I don't think that would leave a lot of time for helping Snyder hire a new general manager and a new coach. That is, if that's Snyder's intention. Of course, things could always change. And Snyder has enough money to persuade people to reverse course. But it seems that Joe Jackson Gibbs is busy elsewhere at the moment. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I really hope this isn't true. Why is that we seem to turn to Gibbs with this spare tire mentallity? I couldn't care less what title they give him. And someone please tell me what does a team president do for the Washington Redskins? Another title with no ideas behind it.
Stop playing games Danny. I hate to be this cynical, and if it's indeed true, this smacks of a ploy by Snyder to appease the fans emotionally and make sure there is no drop off in attendence. Gibbs' ideas aren't any fresher now than they were when he left the second time. This franchise and these fans need to stop worshipping at the altar of Joe Gibbs and move on. Joe had his day, and we will be forever grateful, but let's stop pretending Joe Gibbs will wave some magic wand and suddenly the offensive line will be better and Portis' ankles will be healed. Let's stop tinkering around the edges and blow this team up. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
the thing is snyder doesn't need gibbs to hire football people. there are guys out there that can do the job and all he has to do is pick up the phone.

I can only dream of Joe coming back to DC to run this organization! I hope there is some credibility to this rumor.

If Gibbs wanted the position there would clearly be time for him to do it. JGR, and everything else, continued on when he was head coach. Obviously he would not be in Charlotte to do day-to-day stuff, but I don't know how much of that he does anyway. The question is only if he wants the job and wants to re-commit to the Redskins at his age and station in life. Those things JLC mentions are not reasons that would keep him away if he actually wanted to return. I'm not really sure why he would, but he does seem like the only person capable of mitigating Dan Snyder's destructiveness/bullying tendencies. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Yeah unless he just brings in the GM and head coach and lets them take over everything while he has basically a figurehead/occasional consultant role with the title of President.
I can see it now. President Joe Gibbs, GM Doug Williams, Assistant GM Lionel Vital, Head Coach Russ Grimm, Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles, Offensive Coordinator (insert name that I can't think of right now) A part of me suspects though this is a story planted by the Redskins themselves to get fans, if only temporarily, a bit excited in the midst of all this negative news |

Good point. Except Snyder has never been willing to make the call and at this point I think those individuals would not pick up when they saw a 703 area code on the caller ID. The first part of that statement is why I would be skeptical even if Gibbs returned. I am a huge fan, but I just have trouble believing that Snyder will ever completely divorce himself from football operations. |

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Given Joe's other commitments, I seriously doubt he is coming back in any type of full time role. My hope, however, is that DS's dinner w/ Joe went something like this:
DS: Joe, my front office is a shambles - I trusted Vinny and he just doesn't have it. I need to assemble a new management team. Will you help me do that? JG: Dan, I would like to help but I can't run the team for you. If you want, I will help you assemble a solid managment team including someone to be the final arbiter of football decisions. DS: Okay Joe, that works for me. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
If true I don't see how this could be a bad thing? Gibbs has said in the past that he would like a front office type of job and get away from the mundane part of everyday coaching. Gibbs is a respected person throughout football who might be able to bring certain people to the table ie; GM or HCing candidates that otherwise might not be available if we kept Cerrato or if DS tried to go out and locate someone himself.
I think he might do a good job at locating a GM to run things and between Gibbs and whoever is GM I think they both would most likely find a decent HC. None of this has anything to do with what "scheme" we are going to run. Most teams use similar plays anyway no matter what the scheme, they just use different terminology. Plus I would not have a doubt that Gibbs would not have good HCing candidates in mind no matter what scheme they use. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
IF this is true, then I love this move! For those who are saying they hope it isn't true, this does NOT mean Joe Gibbs would be choosing player personnel. True, he may have a hand with it, but Gibbs is responsible for hiring a legitimate GM and a good coach, then that GM will handle most of the player personnel. This is probably the ONLY thing sort of Daniel Snyder selling the team that could turn this team around. Honestly, do you think Daniel Snyder is going to pick the perfect GM for us? I would rather trust Joe Gibbs. Yes, Gibbs II wasn't as successful as what we all had hoped for, but compared to how things were before he came and afterwards, it was a huge success! So, I'm all for this! PLESAE BE TRUE!!!!

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Gibbs isn't a good talent evaluator anymore, this game has passed him, bring in chris polian, Bill's son and build a team all through the draft, and not free agency and trading draft picks. If Gibbs comes in he should be the team chaplian. He is a better talent evaluator than Vinny though
|
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
We reported earlier this month that owner Daniel Snyder still consults with Gibbs, and that the two men had dinner in Charlotte the night before the Redskins' loss to the Panthers.
This would be a good move for Snyder. Although a little wary, if Snyder has been consulting with Gibbs already, where has that taken us thus far? |

You're missing the point. Joe Gibbs would not have a direct hand in choosing the players. He would choose the GM and the head coach. Gibbs is still very good at building sports franchises. He may not be head coach material anymore, but that does not mean he does not have the eye for talent in the front office and for head coaches. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Another reason I don't want Gibbs here is because of the wall to wall media coverage he would get and the expectations along wtih it. I don't think a GM could possibly operate in that environment.
The big question would always be, who's in charge? With every win and every lost, who's in charge? People would always attempt to connect the dots leading back to Gibbs. Oh, Gibbs and Danny would hold a big presser introducing the new GM and the new head coach declaring this a new day a Redskins Park. They would atone for there sins publicly, assuring the fans that he's not the decision maker and he's just in the background. I don't see anything good coming out of this, except for more filled seats. |

I doubt Snyder and VC has been consulting with Gibbs all this time. Gibbs has been mostly centered around his racing team. They just happened to meet for dinner in Charlotte, NC when the 'skins were in town against the Panthers. |

I disagree. I think Gibbs is a so-so talent evaluator. And I have no evidence of him building any football franchises? During his first stint or his second stint. Sure, the company line would be Gibbs has no say in who's coming here and who's going. Do we really believe that? And as far as him better than Vinny, that's not saying much. We don't need someone a little bit better than Vinny. We need a bonafide, kickass, successful GM. Anything short of that, ain't cutting it. |

Because Parcells has done it as a coach and he's doing it right now as GM in Miami. I don't hear jack about Parcells in Miami, but his influence and strategy is evident. He has depth at the key positions and he has a head coach that is competent at the NFL level. If Gibbs came here, it would be all sizzle and no steak. Great for ratings, but I fear little production. |
Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
What Gibbs is good at (at least I've seen it with his NASCAR team) is finding the right managers and delegating responsibility. I think he could play a wise role in finding the right General Manager, for example, to lead the team.
If anything though, Gibbs could go to bat for Snyder and tell Jimmy Raye (just to throw a name out there), "Hey listen, I'll vouch for him. This is a guy you can work for. He's got the Joe Gibbs Seal of Approval" This dinner by the way in Charlotte, completely overblown. As it was told to me, it was a dinner function with many people there. |

Gibbs would play the same role here. Hire a GM, help hire a coach. It's not a very hands on, down and dirty position. It's just an overseeing of the football ops more than anything. |

And true, in Gibbs I, Bobby Beathard was mostly responsible for finding the right players, as he should have been considering he was the GM. However, I am also applying what Gibbs has done in NASCAR to build championship racing teams. I am speaking on the premise of Gibbs being responsible for finding that GM, which I believe he has the smarts to find that perfect guy for that position, and I also believe someone like Joe Gibbs could find the right coach for us. After all, Joe Gibbs does know a thing or two about coaching in the NFL. And, Joe Gibbs knows a thing or two about being a Super Bowl Champion coach in the NFL. What does Vinny know about picking Head coaches? Apparently, not a lot! It has already been proven that Snyder and Vinny suck as choosing GMs and coaches, why not give someone who has been successful in the NFL a chance to make those choices? It is unfair to say Gibbs doesn't know anything about choosing head coaches or GMs. He hasn't been given the opportunity to do so yet. Let's not tunnel vision solely on player choice during his second stint. I think he also made some right choices during his time here as well. |

The President helps to hire the GM and the Coach. The GM deals mostly with bringing in the players. |

Question: From what it sounds like in the article, Joe wouldn't be making the draft or coaching decisions. He'd get a GM and leave most of the big choices up to whoever that might be. Is that what y'all got out of it?

Why bring him here at all? I would think there are other football minds who are more familiar with the current landscape of assistant coaches and GMs that are ready and capable to take the next step. Joe Gibbs just seems removed and detached, until Danny calls him, from the day-to-day goings on of the NFL. I'm certain there's a flow of information and exchange that you're only privy to because you're plugged in. That's something you can't just jump in and out of and get real feel for. I guess to make my point more clear, SmootSmack works for ESPN. I'll bet when goes on vacation and returns to work, all kinds of shit has gone on behind the scenes around the league that he's not up to speed on. And we're just talking about a week. As far as Parcells not being GM, wasn't it his choice to cut ties with Jason Taylor and then bring him back into the fold? That sounds like GM to me. |

Tom Cruise? Gibbs was a no-brainer hire at the time, and he'd be a no-brainer hire in this situation. Plus, it's something Snyder can't screw up, which is valuable. |
